Nisha Gupta is an existential phenomenologist, a depth psychotherapist, a creativity scholar, and an artist. She's an Associate Professor of Psychology at the University of West Georgia and earned her PhD in clinical psychology from Duquesne University in Pittsburgh. She's also, if she doesn't mind me saying, a bit of a rising star as an early career psychologist, having won early career awards from the APA divisions for both humanistic and qualitative psychology. Dr. Gupta's work centers on lived experience and the problems of form and method in the field. She is an advocate of the psychological humanities, disseminating psychology to the public as art, including paintings, film, poetry, and literary memoir, for community healing and social change. Her artwork seeks to raise critical consciousness and empowerment regarding marginalized lived experiences, such as sexual and gender oppression, creative madness, and spiritual emergencies. In psychotherapy practice, she integrates depth and liberation psychotherapy perspectives. In this conversation, we talk about phenomenological filmmaking and what film can capture about distress, identity, time, and relationships that often elude other approaches to psychological research. We also talk about spiritual emergency and the phrase "dark night of the soul," including the difference between those frameworks and the more familiar language of symptoms and disorders. Dr. Gupta also shares her own experience of navigating a spiritual emergency as a clinical psychologist. We discuss what helped, what did not, what clinicians tend to miss in these situations, and what it would mean to build a better set of responses around people going through them. Finally, we discuss liberation psychology and collective resilience, including the question of how to think about suffering when its sources are social and political, and how to avoid reducing resilience to individual "grit." *** Thank you for being with us to listen to the podcast and read our articles this year. On February 17, nine backcountry skiers were taken by an avalanche at Frog Lake, in the Northern Sierra Nevada near Truckee, California. Since then, the sense of loss and confusion over what happened has been overwhelming. This accident has impacted everyone in the Truckee and Lake Tahoe community on some level. Because of pending investigations, there are so many unanswered questions that will remain unanswered for a long time.As the community struggles to understand, people around the world continue to die in avalanches, including our friend, Stratton Matteson, who was taken by an avalanche in British Columbia a week after the Frog Lake accident. A gut punch made worse by finding out only minutes after we recorded the recap of our trip to Frog Lake. A trip to Frog Lake ending only 48 hours before the accident. Losing Stratton as we recorded made us realize it was too early to share. We needed more time to look inward and reflect. This episode is our second attempt, focused on the realizations we've had in the 18 days since the incident, and what we can all personally do to honor the lives lost, as well as move forward with compassion and a commitment to being safe and making smart decisions every time we step into the backcountry. We send our deepest sympathies to everyone involved in this tragic accident, and we encourage you to consider making a contribution to Tahoe Nordic Search and Rescue. She has seen it all, from flesh-eating bacteria to the work of a serial killer to the more mundane but no less deadly, and her work keeping people from dying (or being unable to) has uniquely prepared her to write this book.99 Ways to Die and How to Avoid Them is an illuminating, darkly funny, and practical guide to 99 of the most terrifying ways to die and how to avoid them. What if a life-threatening health crisis wasn't just a tragedy — but an opportunity? In this episode of Vedge Your Best, Michele talks with Sherry Shrallow, author of Staying ALive, plant-based educator, and longtime advocate for using food as a tool for prevention, healing, and service. At 56, Sherry was an active, fit woman eating what she believed was a heart-healthy diet when she suffered a sudden heart attack while at work. What followed included emergency surgery, a complicated recovery, and a profound reckoning with what she had not been told about heart disease, lifestyle, and prevention.Sherry shares how discovering whole-food, plant-based nutrition — including the early work of Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn — changed the course of her health and her life. She also reflects honestly on depression after surgery, rebuilding strength and routine, navigating imperfection, and learning how to get back on track without shame. This conversation goes beyond food. Sherry talks about meditation, yoga, purpose, and why helping others — including through the Vegan Volunteer Corps, where she helps provide plant-based meals to people experiencing homelessness — has become a central part of her healing and happiness. If you've ever wondered whether change is still possible, whether it's “too late,” or how to move forward without perfection, this episode offers clarity, realism, and hope.In this episode, we discuss:Sherry's heart attack at age 56 and the long recovery that followedWhy heart disease often develops quietly — even in people who think they're healthyWhat she learned (and wasn't told) about food, lifestyle, and preventionDiscovering whole-food, plant-based eating as a powerful interventionDepression after major illness and the importance of routine and purposeWhy this wasn't a tragedy, but an opportunityTeaching cooking classes and making plant-based food accessibleThe Vegan Volunteer Corps and using food to serve othersLetting go of perfection and learning how to get back on trackWhy it's never too late to improve the quality of your life Sherry's YouTube Channel — Chef Sherry's Plant-Based KitchenSubscribe & Review:If you enjoyed this episode, please subscribe and leave a review on your favorite podcast platform. Stayin' Alive shows up with a name that sounds like it should be a whole soundtrack, and the vibe honestly matches, just not in the way people expect. This is Pure Plan's rosin badder, cold-cure style, and the genetic line is Disco Fries x Amnesia OG, which explains a lot about why it feels upbeat, chatty, and mentally switched on.  The first thing you notice is the flavor, because this one does not whisper. You called it guava with that fermented fruit twist, almost kombucha-adjacent, and that is dead on for how “funky-tropical” rosin can hit when it's done right.  It's not “gas” in the classic punch-you-in-the-face way, it's more like fruit got interesting and decided to become a personality. Then the effects come in clean and bright. Not super heady, not couch-glue, more “eyes open, brain curious.” You even clocked that little pressure in the cheeks and forehead, like your face is gently confirming we are, in fact, high right now.  The mood lane is calm, happy, relaxed, and slightly energetic, the kind of high where you suddenly want to be in community. This is the “phones in the basket” strain, the one that makes a living room feel like a hang again.  The one downside, especially at Beehive pricing, is the runtime. You were feeling 20 to 30 minutes and already thinking about another dab, which makes this feel a little too snackable for concentrate money.  Also worth saying out loud, if you overdo it, you said it can flirt with anxiety, but it passed quick. So, small dabs first, let it land, then decide if you want to climb.  For body relief, this wasn't your hero. You didn't rate it as a pain play, and it read more like social, creative, curious energy than deep physical melt.  If your goal is heavy relief, this is probably not the first jar you reach for. If your goal is to vibe, talk, laugh, watch something weird, or fall into a documentary rabbit hole like you're doing research for a PhD in Ancient Aliens, Stayin' Alive understands the assignment.  Genetics, Disco Fries x Amnesia OG.  THC about 78%, with CBG about 1.64%, treat as batch-specific to your jar.  Top terpenes , beta-caryophyllene 2.12%, myrcene 1.329%, limonene 1.019%, humulene 0.989%, linalool 0.367%.  Save on Dr Dabber with Code: Cannabisschool10Save on Storz & Bickel with Code : CannabisschoolSave on Santa Cruz Shredder with Code: CSP10Save on Bomb Erigs with Code: CSPScore 100 on your test

Known for her warmth, wit, and grounded wisdom, she weaves together decades of professional excellence, spiritual formation, and creative exploration to help others live with greater clarity, intention, and joy. In this conversation, Robin reflects on what it means to stay fully alive at every stage of life—curious, engaged, and open to growth. She shares how her early exposure to aging and mortality shaped her drive to “squeeze every drop of juice out of life,” and how dance, spirituality, and improv acting continue to teach her the art of balance between strength and softness. From her work in real estate to her spiritual direction practice, Robin sees every encounter as an opportunity to notice grace and choose joy over fleeting happiness. Her message is a reminder that purpose doesn't fade with age—it deepens when we keep showing up, keep learning, and keep finding the sacred in the everyday.Connect with Robin Kencel:WebsiteInstagramLinkedInYouTubeFacebookLet's Connect:WebsiteInstagram Hosted on Acast.
