Episode Overview In this episode of The Design Vault, hosts Albert Shum and Thamer Abanami are joined by legendary producer Dan the Automator Nakamura (Gorillaz, Deltron 3030, Dr. Octagon) to explore the Technics SL-1200 MK2 — the direct drive DJ turntable that evolved from an audiophile product into a central instrument for hip hop, house, and techno DJs and producers. From Konosuke Matsushita's long-term “250-year philosophy” to Grand Wizard Theodore's scratching breakthrough, this is the story of how Japanese engineering precision met street creativity to create one of the most influential musical instruments of the late 20th century. Dan shares personal stories of witnessing a young Qbert and Mix Master Mike before fame, why the 1200 is often called the “Porsche 911 of turntables,” and how the constraints of early sampling technology shaped hip hop's signature sound. Damian Kulash of OK Go discusses his evolution from punk music fan, working with Dischord records, and creating boundary-pushing music, vinyl packaging and viral videos Topics Include: New album "And The Adjacent Possible" available for streaming now. Discussion about physical media's role in OK Go's output. OK Go primarily known for videos that "live in the ether." Damian was into physical record packaging during college years. First record was Herbie Hancock's "Rockit," bought at Tower Records. Young Damian damaged the record trying to scratch like DJ. Later played with Herbie Hancock at Obama's 50th birthday party. Musical journey from hip-hop through Prince, Beatles, Led Zeppelin. DC punk scene was influential, with bands playing in cafeterias. Started Level Records at age 15,with funding from Dischord Records. Ian MacKaye lent teenager Damian money to start label. Level Records produced 7-inches and compilation CDs for friends' bands. College made running a record label difficult for Damian. Studied art semiotics at Brown University. Worked as NPR radio engineer and Photoshop retoucher after college. Indifferent to Napster's rise during OK Go's early days. Band finances operated like "roadrunner off the cliff" cartoon. Discussion about gift economy model working for the band. Belief that making things you love matters most, not success. Music sometimes gets overshadowed by video's visual impact. Videos gave OK Go longevity beyond typical radio-hit bands. New album theme explores Stuart Kaufman's "adjacent possible" concept. OK Go doesn't have unified sound; band is "like a mixtape." Treadmill video was originally made for "nerdiest fans" only. Videos aim to create real events that connect with viewers. Physical pressings of OK Go albums are costly in secondary market. New vinyl features elaborate pop-up sphere in custom packaging. Hidden track on second album deliberately blocked copy-protection software. Record label "Paracadute" means parachute in Italian. Ten-year album gap wasn't intentional; life and pandemic happened. Directed "The Beanie Bubble" film with his wife for Apple. Film directing different from making music videos; less adrenaline-driven. Video production typically takes 3-6 months from concept to completion. Some video ideas abandoned when technology made them commonplace. Vocal cord coordination is key in helping you hit clear crisp notes and also helps eliminate the bridge or any breaks in your voice. Be careful and gentle with your voice during this session. The movements and sounds are SMALL. Don't aim with your ears in trying to hit or push up to notes, trust the coordination of the muscles and vocal cords to GENTLY come together to do the work. It may take a little bit of time to get used to doing it and to access this consistently, but once you do, you'll be able to access more power with less effort and remove fear of vocal breaks and cracks. I hope you enjoy this short but effective training session! Get access to lots more like this in the Weekly Vocal Workout over on my Patreon page! There's an increasing demand for growers in Canterbury. A reliable water supply and cheaper land than Marlborough and Hawke's Bay are attracting horticulture suppliers to the region. Vegetables NZ chair John Murphy says it's great to see things like Rockit apples grown in South Canterbury. He told Mike Hosking it will help achieve the goal of doubling export values, and new opportunities mean fresh produce can continue to be supplied to New Zealand. Jazz legend Herbie Hancock's venture into the land of hip-hop beats and turntable scratches, "Rockit", was ubiquitous on the dance floor and MTV's rotation, but its origin story is more interesting than you might think. John and Marc dig into the grooves of this groundbreaking '80s staple on the latest episode of the Spindle. Call us anytime at 1-877-WASTOIDS. A veteran of the jazz, funk, and even disco scenes, Herbie Hancock took a left turn in the 80's to help usher hip hop into the mainstream of pop music, and we're certainly glad that he did. This episode focuses on 1983's "Rockit" and the album Future Shock. There are certain movies that could only have existed in the 80's, and Iron Eagle (1986) is one of them. Starring Jason Gedric and Louis Gossett, Jr., it's a hunk of cheese equally matched by its soundtrack, with a theme song by King Kobra. This week on America's Podcast, we welcome back Tim Wirasnik to review "Word Of Mouth" by The Kinks. Did they create an album that will spread like wildfire by word of mouth, or is it just walking a thin line? No spoilers here! Tracks of the week: Mooger with "Miss Murder" by AFI, Tim with "Rock It" by Mötorhead, and we wrap it up with Marc's pick, "No Smoke Without A Fire" by Bad Company. Until next week, remember: Get up, go out, do it again, or just kick back and have a bong hit. The choice is yours, our friends! And hey, if all else fails, just remember that music is like a good joke - if you have to explain it, it's probably not that great! #thekinks #wordofmouth #80s
