For our first hit of VHS based film nostalgia, Stu, Imran and Dan review the 1986 Australian filmed kids action movie Frog Dreaming, starring Henry Thomas of E.T fame. But did they find it a damp squib with strangely dated racist overtones, or a mystical Goonies like adventure, full of teenage wonder and old school magic?
Today we're covering another dude from one of our favorite time periods, the American Civil War. George Henry Thomas was real good at his job and he made sure to get shit done. Even before the Civil War when we were snatching up all that sweet Mexican land. But dude had the worst luck and wound up playing second fiddle to a lot of people you'll recognize, which explains why nobody recognizes him. Still dope though, so enjoy!
We've got us a Walken! This week, the guys talk all about the Tarantino-esque thriller Suicide Kings. What's up with all the Dennis Leary monologues about shoes? How many different endings did this go through? Is Christopher Walken as a "young man" in this film one of the most ridiculous, lazy things ever? And for the love of God, enough with all the twists! Lauren Jenkins and BBC Sport Wales rugby writer Gareth Griffiths head to Nice to catch up with the Wales team as they prepare to face Italy in Rome on Saturday. Wales prop Henry Thomas gives the lowdown from inside the camp while former Wales scrum-half Richie Rees gives his analysis of what went wrong in the record 43-0 defeat to France and what can be done to turn things around at the Stadio Olimpico.
Gareth Rhys Owen, Lauren Jenkins and Cennydd Davies are at The Vale as Warren Gatland announces his team for Friday's Six Nations opener in France. We hear from the Welsh head coach and AFP reporter Illtud Dafydd joins us to discuss the French team. Wales are boosted by the return of British and Irish Lions duo Josh Adams and Liam Williams. Wing Adams has not featured for Wales since the 2024 Six Nations, while full-back Williams' most recent international appearance was on last summer's tour of Australia. Dafydd Jenkins, who captained the side in last year's Six Nations, returns at lock, while Evan Lloyd and Henry Thomas are given their first Wales starts in the front row. Full details are available on the BBC Sport website.
When it comes to the greatest films of all time, few are as universally beloved as E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial. In this E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial Review, Whitey and Gow take a deep dive into Spielberg's sci-fi classic, joined by a special guest to tackle “The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly” in true Born to Watch style. Whether it's your first time experiencing this heartwarming tale or a nostalgic revisit, this episode breaks down why this film has cemented itself as one of the greatest family movies ever made.A Story That Strikes a Universal ChordIt's impossible to talk about E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial without diving into its emotional core. Whitey and Gow agree that the story's success lies in its simplicity. At its heart, it's about a boy and an alien—two lost souls searching for connection. Spielberg's ability to layer this story with humour, wonder, and gut-punch emotion is unmatched. The film opens with E.T., a stranded extraterrestrial, evading shadowy government agents and hiding out in the suburbs. Enter Elliott, a lonely boy played with astonishing emotional range by Henry Thomas. As Whitey points out in the episode, Elliott's arc mirrors the journey many children face growing up—grappling with loneliness, searching for purpose, and discovering the power of friendship.Gow brings his trademark sharp eye to the family dynamics, pointing out how Spielberg subtly grounds the story in a post-divorce home. The absent father looms in the background, adding an emotional layer that makes Elliott's bond with E.T. feel even more profound.Henry Thomas: A Performance for the AgesSpeaking of Elliott, let's say it outright: Henry Thomas delivers one of the greatest child performances in cinematic history. Whitey and Gow are in complete agreement on this one—Thomas deserved an Oscar. From the raw vulnerability of the “They're going to cut him open” scene to the uncontainable joy of the flying bike sequence, his range is simply extraordinary.Whitey highlights how Thomas' performance isn't just about hitting emotional beats—it's about making the audience believe. Elliott's connection with E.T. feels real because Thomas makes it real. As Gow puts it, “You forget this is a kid acting. He becomes the film's emotional heart, and you feel every beat with him.”Drew Barrymore as Gertie also gets her due in the Born to Watch breakdown. Her comedic timing and natural charm bring levity to some of the film's heavier moments, proving that Spielberg had a knack for getting the best out of his young cast.Spielberg's Direction: Pure MagicIt wouldn't be a Born to Watch review without a deep dive into the director's craft, and Spielberg's touch is nothing short of magical in E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial. Whitey breaks down how Spielberg uses the suburban setting to ground the film in reality, making the extraordinary feel believable. The lighting, camera angles, and pacing all work together to create a sense of intimacy that draws you into Elliott's world.Gow can't help but gush about the iconic flying bike scene, which he calls “one of the greatest cinematic moments of all time.” With John Williams' soaring score and Spielberg's seamless blend of practical effects and storytelling, it transcends generations.Whitey points out how Spielberg also masterfully builds tension and wonder, from E.T.'s glowing finger to the government agents lurking just out of sight. There's a reason why Spielberg is a household name—he knows how to tell a story that sticks with you long after the credits roll.A Legacy That Shines BrightIt's hard to overstate the cultural impact of E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial. Whitey and Gow break down how the film became a phenomenon, from its record-breaking box office success to its lasting influence on pop culture. Reese's Pieces became a household name, and the phrase “E.T. phone home” is still instantly recognisable. But beyond its commercial success, the film's themes of empathy, love, and belonging have made it timeless. Gow reflects on how these themes resonate as strongly today, proving that Spielberg created more than just a movie—he created an experience.Final ThoughtsIn this E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial Review, Whitey and Gow don't just revisit a beloved classic—they celebrate it. From Henry Thomas' groundbreaking performance to Spielberg's masterful direction, the film is a shining example of cinema at its best.E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial remains a must-watch whether you're a lifelong fan or a newcomer. Its message of connection and its ability to make you laugh, cry, and believe in magic all over again make it a true masterpiece. As Whitey says in the episode, “This isn't just a movie—it's a part of our childhoods, and it still feels just as magical today.”So, grab some Reese's Pieces and join the Born to Watch team as they relive the magic of E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial. It's a journey you won't want to miss. Please follow the Podcast and join our community at https://linktr.ee/borntowatchpodcasthttps://www.borntowatch.com.au/

Not only was it Anthony Hopkins' favorite sequel (he died a few years later), child actor Henry Thomas scandalized the world with his fascinating portrayal of the young Norman. We've got incest, chain smoking radio hosts, lustful sexiness straight out of a 90's erotic thriller, and the screenwriter of the original all assembled together for a compelling (and occasionally silly) final entry in the saga of the Bates Hotel.

Series maestro Mick Garris tries his hand at writing and directing in this series lowlight. Bennett and Jim don't break from consensus here Gangs of New York's Henry Thomas appears in Mick Garris' high-concept romance as a food scientist with a psychic connection to a mysterious woman. With an abysmal soundtrack and a “you're probably wondering how I got here” framing device, Chocolate doesn't offer much to recommend. Jim and Bennett try their best to see the best in Chocolate. If nothing else, they agree that Matt Frewer is having fun. Save yourself half an hour. Skip watching Chocolate and listen to (Pod)Casters of Horror instead. For years, Dick Ebert has been crowing about "Cloak & Dagger" — the video game angle, the spycraft, the majesty of the San Antonio River Walk. Now it's time to see if this 1984 version of a children's movie still holds up. Starring the late Dabney Coleman, "Cloak & Dagger" transports us to a world where boys kill grown men, berets stop bullets and little girls can carry bombs through airport security. If all this sounds fun, it is. But there's a sadder side to "Cloak & Dagger." It's a film that made the Shat Crew realize Henry Thomas was doomed to always play a child from a broken home, some guys get to swear sweatpants to work and the parents of Gen X didn't care very much about their children. Paul becomes Javi's psychotherapist as we journey back to June 11, 1982, in this white-knuckle discussion of colonialism, media saturation, and the deservedly hallowed place that cinematic titan Steven Spielberg occupies in our popular culture — all of it musingly masquerading as a discourse on what would become (for the next decade) the biggest blockbuster of all time, E.T.: THE EXTRA-TERRESTRIAL. Don't miss our heaviest, most introspective episode, which ranges from a profoundly personal elegy for a suburban American childhood that will never again exist, to a rhapsodic ode to the exquisite magic of cinema. We'll be right here.

On December 14, 2023, historian John Ragosta gave a lecture on Patrick Henry's final political battles. In a democracy, how do you disagree with government policy? What is a loyal opposition? In the 1790s, hyper-partisan political battles threatened to tear the new nation apart. Under the Sedition Act, a person criticizing the government could be jailed; opposition newspaper editors were targeted. In response, the Kentucky Resolutions, drafted by Thomas Jefferson, declared that Kentucky could proclaim federal laws unconstitutional and “nullify” them—secession, state versus state, and against the federal government, loomed. Newspapers warned of “Civil War!” George Washington begged Patrick Henry to come out of retirement, oppose these dangerous policies, and save the union. Though Henry had been the leading antifederalist, arguing against ratification of the Constitution, in 1799, he rebuked Jefferson and insisted that since “we the people” adopted the Constitution—even though Henry had opposed it—anyone contesting federal policy must seek reform “in a constitutional way.” Henry helped to define a loyal opposition. Unfortunately, that story was suppressed by Jeffersonians throughout the 19th century. John Ragosta discussed this story—recounted in For the People, For the Country: Patrick Henry's Final Political Battle—a story of how a democracy must work if it is to survive. John A. Ragosta is a historian at the Robert H. Smith International Center for Jefferson Studies at Monticello. He is the author of Religious Freedom: Jefferson's Legacy, America's Creed and For the People, For the Country: Patrick Henry's Final Political Battle. There was a Pet Sematary prequel that came out late last year! A prequel to the Pet Sematary (2019) remake, to be precise, which was a remake of the 1989 film based on the 1983 Stephen King book. So Bloodlines is a prequel of a remake of an adaptation that went straight to Paramount Plus. We covered the Pet Sematary remake way back in Episode 43 of the Lodgecast. Bloodlines scored a woeful 22% on Rotten Tomatoes, which sealed our fate that we had to cover it. This movie is set in 1969 and stars Jackson White as a young Jud Crandall who discovers the secrets of the cemetery. This movie stars some other heavy hitters, including Henry Thomas, David Duchovny, Samantha Mathis, and Pam Grier. The cast is rounded out by Forrest Goodluck, Jack Mulhern, Natalie Alyn Lind, and Isabella Star LaBlanc. While "sometimes dead is better," we're not ruling out future installments of the Pet Sematary franchise!
