This episode takes a bit of a dark turn and looks at how Wellington music and the city itself faced challenges after the 2008 economic crash. Less focused on bands, more on the industry itself, I have still included a playlist of music from the period. This week I am joined again by Mikee Tucker of Loop Recordings, as well as Justin Lester, the current mayor of Wellington City and Ben Mulchin, owner and manager of the venerable live bar Valhalla. Playlist- Burning- Kora Unsettled Scenes- Riverblind Standing In Silence Pt. 3- Rhian Sheehan Tunnel Vision- Riverblind Rivermen- Beastwars Silence & Youth- Grayson Gilmore Lines & Lights- Moonlight Flit Runes/Ruins- Hex All tracks claim fair dealing for education and review.

This week in Episode Two we look at what is now considered by many to be the "Golden Age" of Wellington music. The Dub/Electronic scene pushed by Loop Recordings from 1998 to 2008. This scene happened while Wellington was in a creative boom, with the Lord Of The Rings trilogy bringing in money and talent into the capital. Such acts to come out of this situation were Fat Freddie's Drop, The Black Seeds, Trinity Roots, Rhian Sheehan, King Kapisi, The Phoenix Foundation and yes, even The Flight Of The Conchords. We are joined again by our past guests Aaron Tokona of Weta and later music producer Pete Jamieson and introducing Mikee Tucker, the founder of Loop and co-founder of Fly My Pretties. As promised here's a link to another podcast with more on Loop and the Wellington Dub/Electronic sound. www.mixcloud.com/basefm/indigenou…24th-march-2017/ Playlist Clav Dub- Rhombus Pavor Nocturnus- Distant Earth (theme) Sense and Cents- Trinity Roots Waiting (feat. Lotus)- Rhian Sheehan Runnin (live)- Fat Freddies's Drop Push On Thru- Salmonella Dub Reverse Resistance- King Kapisi Keep On Pushing- The Black Seeds Little Things- Trinity Roots All tracks used claiming fair dealing for education and review.

Episode One- The Wellington Sound & the crazy 90's. This pilot episode explores the rock/metal boom in Wellington in the 90's, best known through bands like Shihad, Head Like A Hole, Fur Patrol and Weta. From it's humble beginnings, the scene exploded with the release of Shihad's Killjoy in 1995. However the success meant that bands had to move overseas, namely to Melbourne, and not all made it. My guests- Aaron Tokona- Frontman of Weta, later known for Fly My Pretties and Cairo Knife Fight. John Martin- Drummer for early 90's Wellington band Emulsifier. Pete Jamieson- Audio technician and music producer who currently works at Music Planet. He was present when Shihad and Head Like A Hole recorded early demos. Tracks- Pavor Noctunous- Distant Earth (theme)
