Navigating Grief And Galaxies: THE NIGHT FLIGHT ORCHESTRA's Cinematic Journey With 'Give Us The Moon'

HEAVY Music Interviews

Interview by Angela CroudaceSwedish rock collective The Night Flight Orchestra have always fused nostalgia and ambition, but their latest release, Give Us the Moon, dives deeper than ever before—both emotionally and sonically. Frontman Björn Strid opened up about the band's journey through loss, growth, and creative expansion following the passing of co-founder and guitarist David Andersson.Strid describes the album as “cinematic” and “dreamy,” a result of the emotional weight carried during its creation. “We had to grieve as a band,” he says, reflecting on the impact of losing Andersson. “But we also wanted to find joy again and create something uplifting—something he would be proud of.” The result is a multilayered, genre-fluid soundscape that defies classification, staying true to the band's commitment to musical freedom and sincerity.Themes of space and existential reflection permeate Give Us the Moon, inspired in part by a letter Andersson left behind, wishing to be remembered as “an astronaut floating in space.” This poetic image gave shape to the album's narrative arc and title. Despite their retro influences—pulling heavily from late '70s and early '80s AOR and classic rock—Strid emphasises that their music is not just a throwback. “It's a tradition we want to carry on, but it needs to make sense today.”The band's recent signing with Napalm Records also marked a turning point, opening up new promotional avenues and international exposure, including a surprise interview with CNN. With their growing global footprint, The Night Flight Orchestra is preparing for a return to Australia—a country that left a profound mark on Strid during their last visit, inspiring the emotionally charged track “Melbourne, May I.”Balancing his heavy metal roots (as the frontman of Soilwork) with the melodic, theatrical nature of TNFO, Strid finds fulfilment in the contrast. “I switch between genres easily,” he says, noting that each project brings out a different side of his artistry. As Give Us the Moon soars, The Night Flight Orchestra continues to celebrate both the cosmic and the deeply personal—honouring a lost friend, embracing new creative horizons, and inviting listeners on an unforgettable voyage through sound and soul.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

Loaded Radio Podcast: Greg Burgess of Allegaeon Discusses 'The Ossuary Lens' & Warfield Talks Thrash Metal TL;DR On this episode of the Loaded Radio Podcast, Scott Penfold sits down with Greg Burgess of Allegaeon to discuss the band's latest album, “The Ossuary Lens”, which was released on April 4 via Metal Blade Records. This marks the band's first new music featuring original vocalist Ezra Haynes since his departure in 2015. Also featured is a conversation with German thrash metal trio Warfield, who recently released their new album, “With The Old Breed” via Napalm Records. Allegaeon Returns with 'The Ossuary Lens' Technical death metal powerhouse Allegaeon has unleashed their latest full-length album, “The Ossuary Lens,” released on April 4 via Metal Blade Records. This album marks a significant moment for the band, as it is their first release with original vocalist Ezra Haynes since his 2015 departure following the “Elements Of The Infinite” album. The return of Haynes brings back Allegaeon's brutal and technically dazzling sound, which fans have been eagerly awaiting. The band's latest single, “Driftwood,” serves as a powerful introduction to the new record, with its unique blend of melodic, technical death metal — a sound Haynes describes as “melotech.” “We're just so happy to finally release new music,” said Greg Burgess. “We're working on a full album's worth of material, but I feel like it's gonna drop kind of in chunks and then hopefully the rest of it all at once kind of thing.” Recording once again with producer Dave Otero at Flatline Audio studio in Denver, Allegaeon continues their 17-year relationship with the producer. “Dave always provides a comfortable working environment, amazing ideas, and a career-spanning understanding of what has made Allegaeon, Allegaeon,” added Burgess. The album's overarching theme focuses on various perspectives of death, with each track exploring a unique viewpoint. Haynes explained, “Each song essentially is a different topic, however there is always a different perspective of death tied to each subject.” Allegaeon's Latest Album - 'The Ossuary Lens' Track Listing: 01. Refraction 02. Chaos Theory 03. Driftwood 04. Dies Irae 05. The Swarm 06. Carried By Delusion 07. Dark Matter Dynamics 08. Imperial 09. Wake Circling Above 10. Scythe Warfield - German Thrash Metal Titans Alongside the conversation with Greg Burgess, the Loaded Radio Podcast also features an interview with German thrash metal band Warfield. Their latest album, “With The Old Breed,” was released via Napalm Records and continues their tradition of relentless thrash metal inspired by bands like Slayer, Sodom, Kreator, and the Bay Area Thrash scene. Warfield, consisting of Johannes Clemens (Vocals & Bass), Matthias Clemens (Guitar), and Dominik Marx (Drums), is known for their aggressive approach to social and political themes, which they express through their brutal and fast-paced sound. Their most recent album follows their 2018 debut, “Wrecking Command,” which was released via Metal on Met

German thrash three-piece Warfield are back with their brand-new album, the unstoppable inferno that is ‘With the Old Breed', out March 28th, 2025, via Napalm Records. An album that sees Warfield explore the unembellished and emotional depiction of societal, historical, social and internal wars – expressing criticism of the bitter part of reality. A staggering step up in all departments for Warfield, this new album has the band sounding tighter and stronger than never. All because they've focused their sound, experimented with different elements with the faster and heavier genres, removed the egregious rawness of earlier releases, but not lost the spirit of thrash metal in any way. Acclaimed Swedish rockers The Night Flight Orchestra released their seventh studio album and Napalm Records debut, ‘Give Us the Moon', on January 31st, 2025. The 13-track album takes the listener on an exciting sonic journey, balancing between uplifting escapism and captivating stories inspired by real life events. The album's themes span the likes of heroines and temptresses to liberation and romantic nostalgia, set to backdrops of abandoned cities and cosmic tides. Fans are going to love this, and likely crow about it as loudly as ever, rightfully so. However, critics won't find much to change their minds. It's The Night Flight Orchestra and having fun is still the name of the game. Metal Debate Album Review - Abart (Eisregen)

The Great Metal Debate Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 22, 2024 4:33

Welcome back metal heads to another album review here on The Great Metal Debate podcast. Today we will be talking about a German black metal band called Eisregen with their ... Holy dog shit! This is the band's 16th full-length studio album? What the fuck? How come I'm just now finding out about these guys. Ohhhh, that's why. Its because its their first album to be released through Napalm Records. Gotcha. But damn, these guys have been busier than a one armed machinist. According to Metal-Archives, they have consistently released new music roughly once or per year or once every two years since 1995. In 1998 they released both their debut AND their second album. I have heard from Gomthog that these guys are controversial in their home country. I'm not sure what for but their band bio says that they have been banned in their own country and aren't allowed to play certain songs live. People under the age of 16 aren't allowed to buy their physical media from entertainment stores. For now, lets focus on their newest full-length titled Abart. Not to do a completely half-assed job on this review but I've decided that I'm not going to try to pronounce any of the song titles or names of the band members. Sure, it might be lazy but I received the press release for this album a full week in advance and here we are a few days past the release date of August 16th, so I kinda need to hurry the fuck up. My cause for the delay? I was busy with another review. A review that will never see the light of day. I was gonna do one for the new Mushroomhead album before I realized that it was just me rambling on about my personal nostalgia for the old material only to give Call The Devil a 5/10. There, you got two reviews in one! Looks like y'all got more than you bargained for. Back to Eisregen, the only reason I got the promo from something on Napalm Records is because the distribution for the American copies were being released through Massacre Records. Lucky me. I have another extremely hot take so you might want to get your oven mitts on. Many people would call me a poser for being a Rammstein fanboy but ... I love the industrial metal phase that the black metal band Samael went through during the mid-2000s. I think it's Samael's best work. I know, I know, gather your torches and pitchforks to run me out of the metal community. I don't give a shit. What does that have to do with Eisregen? Eisregen sounds like Samael's 2004 masterpiece Reign of Light album raw dogged it with Rammstein's 2003 masterpiece Sehnsucht. Eisregen has that harsh flavor of German dialect. The band's native language spoils the listener with the continuous rolling tongue accent. Okay, I lied. I'll pronounce this one for you. The opening track "Am Abgrund" had a music video that was dropped a few weeks ago and its how I discovered this band in the first place. I thoroughly enjoyed the combination of the sandpaper voice over the calming piano keys. The entire album mixes the traditional black metal style with softer moments. The fusion of polar opposites give off the perfect blend of a musical Yen and Yang. That's what the overall structure provides, a balance that is easy listening. At least in my personal opinion, I find this 1 hour and 2 minute composition to be flawless. I have zero critiques which means only one thing. Eisregen - Abart is the only album I have reviewed all year that I award a 10/10 rating. It's fucking fantastic! What this band lacks in melodic guitar riffs, it more than compensates with plenty of symphonies. Eisregen's music is not on bandcamp and I have no clue where to obtain physical merch but their music is on all other streaming platforms. KILL THE LIGHTS Drummer Michael "Moose" Thomas and THE GEMS guitarist/bassist Mona Lindgren join us on this week's edition of The Loaded Radio Podcast KILL THE LIGHTS is the band featuring former BULLET FOR MY VALENTINE bassist Jason "Jay" James and drummer Michael "Moose" Thomas, alongside former members of THROW THE FIGHT, THREAT SIGNAL, and STILL REMAINS. The group made waves with their debut album, "The Sinner," released in 2020 under Fearless Records. Praised for its "statement songs" (Distorted Sound) and technical prowess, it garnered acclaim for its expansive sound and precise execution (Sonic Perspectives). After piling up millions of streams and earning acclaim from the likes of KERRANG! and Metal Hammer, a sense of unwavering unity drives their second full-length offering, "Death Melodies", which arrives March 8 via Fearless Records. “The best stuff comes when we're together,” states Moose. “We'll joke around for hours, have a few drinks, and the songs write themselves. We're so connected in this way. There's no path. We're not trying to follow anybody. This is the first album that really sounds like Kill The Lights.” In December 2017, BULLET FOR MY VALENTINE announced the departure of Thomas, replaced by Jason Bowld (PITCHSHIFTER, AXEWOUND). Bowld had been touring with the band since November 2015, filling in for Thomas, who had taken time off for family reasons. Prior to that, bassist Jason James' departure from BULLET FOR MY VALENTINE was announced in February 2015, during the recording of the band's fifth album, "Venom." Jamie Mathias was brought in as his replacement in May of the same year. In the podcast, "Moose" talks about his stepping away from BFMV, how he came to join KILL THE LIGHTS with his ex-bandmate and plans for the immediate future behind the kit. The second portion of the show features THE GEMS guitarist/bassist Mona Lindgren. Emerging from the remnants, Swedish rock newcomers THE GEMS, comprising former THUNDERMOTHER members vocalist Guernica Mancini, drummer Emlee Johansson, and guitarist/bassist Mona “Demona” Lindgren, announce their debut album, "Phoenix," which arrived on January 26, 2024, via Napalm Records. THE GEMS' potential was swiftly validated with the release of their inaugural standalone single, "Like A Phoenix," in the summer of 2023. This debut single soared to the No. 2 position on the German Rock Radio Airplay Charts, catching the attention of rock enthusiasts worldwide. The album's captivating opener, "Aurora," sets the stage, allowing Mancini's distinctive, powerful, and bluesy vocals to shine. Following this, the infectious rock anthem "Queens" celebrates feminine strength and resilience. Themes of empowerment and perseverance echo throughout "Phoenix," exemplified by tracks like the standout "Send Me To The Wolves," advocating for self-assertion and triumph over adversity. In the show, Mona discusses what exactly happened with THUNDERMOTHER, the formation of THE GEMS, the crushing new album "Phoenix" and tons more.

JOB FOR A COWBOY frontman Jonny Davy and EXIT EDEN co-vocalist Anna Brunner join us for this week's edition of The Loaded Radio Podcast This week on the Loaded Radio Podcast Scott Penfold sits down first with JOB FOR A COWBOY vocalist Jonny Davy to discuss the death metal outfit's latest album "Moon Healer". “Moon Healer” is set for release on February 23rd via Metal Blade Records. The release marks JOB FOR A COWBOY‘s first new full-length in a decade! “Moon Healer” is a vivid illustration of what happens when creativity, aggression, and volatility tangle for the first time in years. Like the band's critically adored, 2014-released “Sun Eater” offering, “Moon Healer” is musically multifaceted, unabashedly brutal, and compellingly conceptual. Featuring a newly refreshed and reinspired lineup of frontman and co-founder Jonny Davy, guitarists Tony Sannicandro and Al Glassman, bassist Nick Schendzielos, and drummer (since 2020) Navene Koperweis, the band seamlessly picks up the mantle where JOB FOR A COWBOY‘s “Sun Eater” left off. Compared to past offerings, “Moon Healer” is as bone-crushing as JOB FOR A COWBOY has ever been. But it's more consistent and conceptual, composed with the utmost enthusiasm and confidence. “The evolution of our sound has become a big part of the band,” Davy says. “As we mature as musicians, our tastes and interests naturally expand. With age comes more experience and ideas that we wouldn't have considered in our earlier years.” “Moon Healer” was produced by Jason Suecof (DEATH ANGEL, THE BLACK DAHLIA MURDER, DEICIDE) at his Audiohammer Studios and is the first JOB FOR A COWBOY album to feature session drummer Navene Koperweis (ex-Animosity). Davy previously worked with Koperweis in the progressive death metal side project FLESHWROUGHT, which released Dementia/Dyslexia through Metal Blade in 2010. Koperweis also worked as a session drummer for MACHINE HEAD and WHITECHAPEL and is currently in the band ENTHEOS, whose third full-length came out on Metal Blade in March 2023. In the second portion of the podcast, Scott sits down with Anna Brunner from EXIT EDEN. Symphonic metal unit EXIT EDEN, consisting of Clémentine Delauney (VISIONS OF ATLANTIS), Anna Brunner (LEAGUE OF DISTORTION) and Marina La Torraca (PHANTOM ELITE) recently released their second album, “Femmes Fatales” via Napalm Records. “Femmes Fatales” includes 12 songs in total — half covers, half original compositions. EXIT EDEN‘s new release follows the band's debut, 2017's “Rhapsodies In Black”, which garnered millions of video views (12 million on EXIT EDEN‘s cover of Bonnie Tyler‘s “Total Eclipse Of The Heart” alone). Previous singles from “Femmes Fatales”, “Run!” (featuring ex-NIGHTWISH bassist/vocalist Marko Hietala) and “Separate Ways” (JOURNEY cover) have already surpassed a million views since their respective releases in October and December 2023. Now performing as a trio, EXIT EDEN‘s new full-length follows the path of its predecessor, as it contains six cover versions of famous cross-generational super-hits, but this time also shines by offering six original compositions. With one exception (“Dying In My Dreams”, co-written by Marina La Torraca),the remaining five original songs were brought to life by Brunner and Hannes Braun (KISSIN' DYNAMITE),who is also responsible for recording, production and mixing, whereas the album was mastered by Jacob Hansen (DELAIN, AMARANTHE, VOLBEAT, DESTRUCTION and many more). Self-confidently leading straight into the tempting world of EXIT EDEN, opening “Femme Fatale”, “Buried In The Past” and “Hold Back Your Fear” conjure a mystical atmosphere with strings and orchestral elements, topped by complementary vocals uniting the sonic diversity of the all-femme trio. “Dying In My Dreams” and album closing “Elysium” set the tone as captivating mid-tempo tracks with intense choruses that speak straight to the heart.
