The idea of leaving society to start up a new one isn't exactly new... history is full of people leaving to go start new countries. But the idea became especially fashionable in 20th century America and was jump-started as a reaction to the counterculture in the 1960's, and given new life by Silicon Valley entrepreneurs in the 2000's. Dave talks with Raymond Craib, professor of history at Cornell University, about his new book "Adventure Capitalism: A History of Libertarian Exit from the Era of Decolonization to the Digital Age" which covers the upsurge in these ideas in the 60's to today, and their connection to everything from Brexit to Seasteading. On this occasion our heroes are taking another trip down under and set aside their vegemite sandwiches to discuss Courtney Barnett's 2015 release ‘sometimes I sit and think, and sometimes I just sit'.The line “I wanna go out but I wanna stay home” bellowed out of a tinny radio hung above the counter of a Dunedin coffee shop. In between ravenous bites of his croissant, Stefan's ears caught the monotonous melody and hooked him in. Part of the appeal was the contrast between the trippy and the aggressive rock; but ultimately what we really latched onto was her lyrical worldview. In this adventure our heroes fill the tank and get the hell outta Dodge. They trade the skyscrapers of LA for the rock n roll bastion, Joshua Tree National Park; all of which is done comfortably from their studios in the South Coast of England, purely by immersing themselves in Songs for the Deaf by Queens of the Stone Age.Josh Homme, everyone's favourite desert rocker, collected a rag tag group of like minded headbangers to share this concept album. Bassist Nick Oliveri, who came up with the concept of a car journey; Mark Lanegan from Screaming Trees; and everyone's favourite drummer turned guitarist, the very face of rock n roll, Dave Grohl slapping some skins. The album is heavy, melodic and transportative as it carries you from your little spot and smacks you into the Californian desert.Of course along the way they share laughs, anecdotes, and outrageous opinions.***New merchandise alert*** head over to www.asoundpurchase.com/shop to see our new retro design tshirt, mug, or stickers; as well as our long promised ‘Rhodes' tshirt.Your support of this podcast is hugely appreciated, you have been vital to the sanity of our heroic podcast hosts. In this adventure our heroes are back and ready for action. What an album to return with; Weezer's 1996 sophomore record ‘Pinkerton'.Following the immense success of their debut record, ‘weezer' (the blue album), the band naturally felt the pressure to follow up with something bigger and better. Singer Rivers Cuomo put the band on hiatus whilst he went to study at Harvard University. Whilst there he practiced abstinence, went to music theory class, and dealt with fan mail coming from Japan. All of these situations influenced the songs on ‘Pinkerton'. Upon release the record was grossly misunderstood by critics; although many have since changed their tune.Of course along the way they share laughs, anecdotes, and outrageous opinions.Your support of this podcast is hugely appreciated, you have been vital to the sanity of our heroic podcast hosts. This week's adventure is like no other as our heroes have had to once again hang up their cape and cowls, as they assume their alter ego roles being family men. Nevertheless, like every great mind, they had planned ahead and are instead offering a sneak peak at a selection of the bonus podcasts, normally reserved for the Friends of the Show. This bonus episode is taken from the Getting Into… series, which initially began as a series of blog posts, and has moved into the podcasting world. Every now and then, an artist pops up on our radar, yet we don't know where to start. Getting Into… provides five jumping off points into an artist's back catalogue. In this episode we discuss the Canadian progressive rock maestros; the holy triumvirate, Rush.Over a forty year career, the power trio released 19 studio albums, toured across the globe and proved that they are just like us, except they are the greatest musicians in the history of the world. Of course throughout the episode, they bring their warped sense of humour and plenty of laughs.Your support of this podcast is hugely appreciated, you have been vital to the sanity of our heroic podcast hosts. Nevertheless, like every great mind, they had planned ahead and are instead offering a sneak peak at a selection of the bonus podcasts, normally reserved for the Friends of the Show. This bonus episode is based around the tried and tested format of Top 10s; and of course chaos does ensue as a ringer is thrown into the mix late in the game. In this week's adventure our heroes navigate previously uncharted waters of Canadian darlings the Tragically Hip. The band that is world famous in Canada, yet seem to be relatively less known beyond the border.Stefan was turned onto them by way of another Canadian icon, Neil Peart; through Peart's book ‘traveling music' where he recommends 1992's ‘Fully Completely'. From the opening shuffle of the record to the passionate and scholarly lyrics, Stefan was hooked. Will Jake think the same?Of course throughout the episode, they bring their warped sense of humour and plenty of laughs.Your support of this podcast is hugely appreciated, you have been vital to the sanity of our heroic podcast hosts. In this episode our heroes retreat to the comfort of their fortress of solitude by discussing a new record from a band that their friendship (pun intended) was solidified over. The band is the Phoenix Foundation, the record is ‘Friend Ship'.Released in the murky months that have been the Covid 19 Pandemic; Wellington based Phoenix Foundation collated the sum of their recorded efforts from years gone by to lift the spirits of the world. Interestingly, the band decided to reign in the sonic experimentation, in favour of focusing on the depth of the lyrics and quality of songwriting; a move that paid off for them as this is their most intriguing record to date. The real question is though, are the guys prepared to say goodbye to ‘the Mollusk' by Ween, a dear record from the early days of the podcast, which hangs on by a thread at the bottom of both top 10 lists.Of course throughout the episode, they bring their warped sense of humour and plenty of laughs. We were really fortunate to be able to interview Samuel Flynn Scott from the band, the full conversation is available for our Friends of the Show.
