Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for August 24, 2022 is: glitch GLITCH noun A glitch is a usually minor malfunction or a problem that causes a temporary setback. // The email went out to everyone in the company because of a technical glitch. See the entry > Examples: "The weekend's exercise, which NASA calls a wet dress rehearsal, is the last major test before the rocket is launched on its first uncrewed test flight, which could occur as soon as this summer. By simulating a countdown without the excitement of engines igniting and a rocket rising to space, NASA hoped to work out glitches with equipment and procedures." — Kenneth Chang, The New York Times, 4 Apr. 2022 Did you know? There's a glitch in the etymology of glitch—it may come from the Yiddish glitsh, meaning "slippery place," but that's not certain. Print use of glitch referring to a brief unexpected surge of electrical current dates to the mid-20th century. Astronaut John Glenn, in his 1962 book Into Orbit, felt the need to explain the term to his readers: "Literally, a glitch is a spike or change in voltage in an electrical circuit which takes place when the circuit suddenly has a new load put on it." Today, the word can be used of any minor malfunction or snag. If you're a gamer you might even take advantage of a glitch that causes something unexpected, and sometimes beneficial, to happen in the game.

This week on Wellington Rocks we talk to alternative stoner rockers, Planet Hunter. Formed from the ashes of Wellington bands Mangle & Gruff and Killing Bear, Planet Hunter formed in 2017 with bassist Jedaiah Van Ewijk, vocalist Cormac Ferris, guitarist William Saunders and drummer David McGurk. Influenced by a variety of progressive, stoner and alternative rock acts, Planet Hunter quickly made themselves a name on the live circuit opening for the likes of Ultranauts, Opium Eater and Into Orbit amongst others and released the raw single "The Bigger They Are". Now they are set to release their debut four track EP on November 1st, recorded in a shipping container in Tawa, taking the DIY noise of alt rock to Wellington's regional suburbs. We talk about the recording process, how the band formed, the writing process and dealing with "reject songs" and ask, is it possible for a dive bar to get sick of a band playing there too much? Wellington Rocks is bought to you by Access Radio Wellington and NZ On Air. This week on Wellington Rocks we welcome back instrumental post-metal duo, Into Orbit and debut a new kind of podcast episode, the album breakdown. Kinesis is Into Orbit's third full length release, dropping onto Bandcamp at the start of May this year. When compared to the debut, Caverns and it's follow up, Unearthing, Kinesis can very much be seen as a hybrid between the two. It combines the atmospheric ambiance of Caverns with the heavy layered riffing and varied song structures of Unearthing, while still bringing some new tricks to the table with shifting beats, layered harmonic guitar leads and ever more wacky guitar noises. Wellington Rocks talks to guitarist Paul Stewart about the making of the album, the methods used to piece the tracks together and how important the live show was, as we go through four tracks off the album in depth. Wellington Rocks is brought to you by Access Radio Wellington and NZ On Air. Episode 151Guest: Robo Hawks Robotics Team Harris Middle SchoolOur robotics team was created 3 years ago with a small group of students. We have a blend of 6th-8th students, but out of the seven students we had in the club, only one was a female when we first started out. Since our first year we have achieved a more balanced group and have an even mix of young men and women. We began participating in First Lego League as a way to get our feet wet with programming and compete with other teams throughout the San Antonio and surrounding areas. FIRST LEGO League challenges kids to think like scientists and engineers. During the INTO ORBIT season, teams will choose and solve a real-world problem in the Project. They will also build, test, and program an autonomous robot using LEGO® MINDSTORMS® technology to solve a set of missions in the Robot Game. Throughout their experience, teams will operate under the FIRST signature set of Core Values, celebrating discovery, teamwork, and Gracious Professionalism®. Our students took this challenge head on and we spoke with an engineer from NASA to talk about the challenges these astronauts face with long term space travel. During their conversation with David Brady they realized they wanted to focus on the social emotional aspect these astronauts are faced with because Scott Kelly stated this would be the biggest concern NASA will face. Scott Kelly said the lack of choices in daily activity and being away from Earth is the hardest part of the mission. So the students solution to this was to send virtual reality googles into space with the astronauts so that when they are required to work out on the treadmill for 2 hours a day, they can feel at home by choosing their own adventure. It would be a way to bring Earth to space in a sense. David was impressed with their idea and forwarded the idea on to a colleague at NASA in the Human Research Project to see if they had considered this idea. I’m happy to report that NASA is looking into something similar and David praised our students ingenuity as they did think of a real-life solution for the issues our astronauts face in long-term space travel.About Middle School Teacher: Stefanie FulfordI have been teaching for six years. Four of which have been here at Harris Middle School in NEISD. I have always taught science as it is my first love and I believe there is a place for female in this field of study. This year I was awarded the Trinity Prize and Teacher of the Year for my school. I come from a very challenging background as my mother is mentally handicapped, schizophrenic, and has manic depression. I never knew my real dad and my step-dad was an abusive alcoholic. So I was in and out of foster care and finally went to live in an orphanage at age 12. This was a new battle for me, but it provided stability. I joined the military as a way to pay for my college because I knew education was the key to a better life. I am proud to say I not only have my bachelors in education, but a masters in psychology. I wanted to be a positive influence in others around me so teaching made sense as I would create the most change in the next generation. I take every opportunity to connect with my students so that I can positively influence them. #Wissenschaftsradio! Welcome to The Skulls of Wrath Show. We're back doing the online radio show thing. Makes more sense, dunnit? I mean, I came from radio after all. Below you'll find a playlist & copy of my notes I used for the show- generally not for public consumption Motorhead- The Hammer. (A: Ace of Spades. 1980.) Fast Eddie Clarke, the last surviving member of the classic Motorhead lineup, passed 10th January 2018. R.I.P. Corrosion of Conformity- The Luddite. New album- “No Cross No Crown” out now & the band seem to be on tour with Black Label Society across America. I mean, around since the early 80’s, 10 studio albums now, at least, you know- everyone knows these guys, no brainer. # YoutubeRant Headroller – God of Torment (NZ) Self titled, debut album, out now! Dark Divinity – Season of Dark (NZ) Newly formed melodic death metal band, a super group – i.e. Into Orbit, Cripple Mr Onion, Destructatron, Team Kill. Based in wellington nz, according to their fb page…Debut single (seasons of dark.) Upcoming gigs- early Feb @ Scorn of Creation album release show. End of May @ Libidinous Metalfest 2. Dutch, darkened death metal, also black metal and thrash influenced band, have an album, their 2nd, Dodekathlon, a concept album based on the labours of Hercules, is out now. At the end of last year, I had the opportunity to speak with guitar player and founder, Ramon Ploeg. Please note that at this time, the single released at that point was “From Feast to Beast.” >>INTERVIEW WITH RAMON PLOEG OF BLEEDING GOD

In this Episode we talk to Paul Stewart from Into Orbit, a post-rock/post metal duo who have been wowing Wellington gig goers with their huge sound and clever compositions for 5 years. We talk about working within the limits of a duo, working with technology while keeping things "human" and the fun, unexpected sometimes explosive things that can happen live. A longer than normal episode, apologies. What do these older tracks still mean to you? A: They symbolise important moments in my life, times where they made me really appreciate the power and emotion of music and how it can transcend anything. I have to say this is one of the best mix ideas i’ve been asked to do. I knew some of the tracks I would select and I've been keeping some in mind the last few weeks. I tried to go from the earliest up to the last few years, it’s impossible to get in all you want but the records I've chosen have always stood out for me and hold a special place in my heart. Q: At the end of your set you´re representing your latest release. Please tell us more about. A: I wrote those tracks a long time ago, one of them I wrote about 3 or 4 years ago, but i knew I liked them. I forgot about them for a while, then I was going through some tracks and found them, I took them with me on holiday and I thought ok I like these, especially pluck. Later that night I saw a flyer for Steve Bug on a wall, he was playing and I thought ok I should send them him, he might like them. The Pluck track I think was really influenced by me listening to a lot of electronic jazz at the time, I like making things that are out of time, things that don’t really make sense. The other 2 tracks were tracks I’d wrote a while back and I just liked them, they’re not like the stuff I’m writing now but they spoke to me in some fashion, and with Steve saying he liked them I thought ok that’s cool, I respect Steve and that means a lot so lets do it. Q: Which further projects are coming in 2018? A: I have an EP on Carl Craigs label, Planet e, as well as something coming on Maceo Plex’s label, we’re just deciding if it will be Ellum or Lone Romantic. There’s also another track on a Fabric compilation I’ve just signed which nobody has heard yet. I’m hoping to release more on my own label, Into Orbit, later this year too. I’m sitting on a lot of new music!

THE LEGACY CONTINUES . LOTL RADIO WELCOMES ALEX ISLEY DEBUT HER NEW CD - THE LOVE/ ART MEMOIRS. If the name sounds familiar, you'd be correct in assuming the relation. Alex Isley is the daughter of Ernie Isley of the famous Isley Brothers. Don't expect to hear anything that resembles “Between the Sheets”; she's independently carving her way with her own unique sound in her debut project “The Love/Art Memoirs.” One thing, though, similar to the Isley tradition is undeniable smoothness. “Into Orbit” will send you there, while “The Boy Who Cried Love” puts a spin on love's karma. Self-written and produced, her lush vocals, harmonies, thought-provoking relatable topics, and soothing production make for easy listening.
