Episode #112 is now available! Our guest is Barnaby Weir. Barnaby leads two of New Zealand’s most popular bands (The Black Seeds and Fly My Pretties) and we had a great chat about life/work balance, his childhood, his creative process and the rise of The Black Seeds and the Wellington Reggae / Dub scene. Barnaby is a kind and thoughtful guy and this turned out to be a really interesting conversation. Enjoy!
Guitarist Kara Gordon who now goes by the stage name Jimi Kara, regularly performs around the country and never seems to slow down. He's opened for Slash, Elton John, Ozzy Osbourne, George Clinton, toured New Zealand, Australia and the UK with Alabama 3, performed many times with Fly My Pretties and has recently been a part of the tribute shows for the late Aaron Tokona. He's a big character, an unforgettable presence and has even claimed to be Jimi Hendrix re-incarnate. This one's a wild ride and reveals a thoughtful and quieter side of this larger than life character. Enjoy!
Clinton Tokona is the bass player for iconic New Zealand band Weta. Tookie (or Toks as he is known) and I have been good friends since Weta released their debut (and only!) album ‘Geographica’ back in 2000. We met backstage at Kiwi high school band competition The Pepsi Smokefree Rockquest which I was competing in with my first band 1QA and Weta were the guest performers. Since then Toks and I have played in a bunch of different projects with each other and have enjoyed many a lol over a coffee/tea/beer/cigarette/other. After the death of his brother Aaron Tokona (the principal singer/songwriter for Weta) earlier this year the band have remastered their record and are celebrating it’s 20th anniversary along with a new single entitled ‘So Far, So Close’. Toks and I talk about boxing, bass playing, cheap eggs benedict, his brother Aaron, how he (maybe) met Flea (but DEFINITELY met Neil Finn) and a bunch more. All music on the podcast by Joshua Moriarty & All The Colours. Barnaby Weir may be one of our most prolific musicians. Not in number of albums or tracks, but in the number of musical hats he wears. He’s the lead singer of The Black Seeds, known for his electronic music under “Flash Harry”, a solo musician in his own right, and once of the men behind musical collaboration Fly My Pretties. And it’s that last project that brought him into studio with Jack.LISTEN TO AUDIO ABOVE

Kia Ora, welcome to Jewels from NZ! Today I talking about Money, Money, MONEY! The NZD, Kiwi Dollar or Tāra o Aotearoa. I go over a quick history and mostly talk about what we decided to decorate our money with. It tells you a lot about who we are and gives you a sweet overview of some of the countries history, scenery, famous people, flora and fauna. Hit me up with any questions you have about NZ (or me) and I'll do my best to give it to you "raw and wriggling" as that's how we do it here in NZ. No edits and loose AF. I'm here for the good times so hopefully you find it's good too. Aroha nui. Ka kite anō. This week in Episode Two we look at what is now considered by many to be the "Golden Age" of Wellington music. The Dub/Electronic scene pushed by Loop Recordings from 1998 to 2008. This scene happened while Wellington was in a creative boom, with the Lord Of The Rings trilogy bringing in money and talent into the capital. Such acts to come out of this situation were Fat Freddie's Drop, The Black Seeds, Trinity Roots, Rhian Sheehan, King Kapisi, The Phoenix Foundation and yes, even The Flight Of The Conchords. We are joined again by our past guests Aaron Tokona of Weta and later music producer Pete Jamieson and introducing Mikee Tucker, the founder of Loop and co-founder of Fly My Pretties. As promised here's a link to another podcast with more on Loop and the Wellington Dub/Electronic sound. www.mixcloud.com/basefm/indigenou…24th-march-2017/ Playlist Clav Dub- Rhombus Pavor Nocturnus- Distant Earth (theme) Sense and Cents- Trinity Roots Waiting (feat. Lotus)- Rhian Sheehan Runnin (live)- Fat Freddies's Drop Push On Thru- Salmonella Dub Reverse Resistance- King Kapisi Keep On Pushing- The Black Seeds Little Things- Trinity Roots All tracks used claiming fair dealing for education and review.
Episode One- The Wellington Sound & the crazy 90's. This pilot episode explores the rock/metal boom in Wellington in the 90's, best known through bands like Shihad, Head Like A Hole, Fur Patrol and Weta. From it's humble beginnings, the scene exploded with the release of Shihad's Killjoy in 1995. However the success meant that bands had to move overseas, namely to Melbourne, and not all made it. My guests- Aaron Tokona- Frontman of Weta, later known for Fly My Pretties and Cairo Knife Fight. John Martin- Drummer for early 90's Wellington band Emulsifier. Pete Jamieson- Audio technician and music producer who currently works at Music Planet. He was present when Shihad and Head Like A Hole recorded early demos. Tracks- Pavor Noctunous- Distant Earth (theme) I Only Said- Shihad Get On Up- Emulsifier Down In Splendour- Straitjacket Fits Holy- Fur Patrol Keith- Head Like A Hole Let It Go- Weta You Again- Shihad My Mind's Sedate- Shihad Calling On- Weta Sunrise- Distant Earth All tracks used as fair dealing for review and education. After the last Bledisloe and Perth Spirit winning the NRC Final host Rugby Reg, Hugh and Matt 'Gagger' Rowley get you over the gain line on this week's five burning questions: 1. What cost us victory in that match? 2. Did Cheika go too far in the post game press conference? 3. Was that our best performance of the year? 4. What's a pass mark for the EOYT? 5. Does Perth's success in the NRC mean anything for next year? We hope you enjoy these as much as we do making them and love hearing feedback, reviews or suggestions. So get in touch!
