Nick Mills: What is Tory Whanau's legacy as Wellington mayor?

Wellington Mornings with Nick Mills

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 29, 2025 7:54 Transcription Available

OPINION Tory Whanau has said no. She's said no to standing for Wellington mayor for the three terms she always said she'd run for. She's out; she's thrown in the towel. We won't get the exciting election campaign of Tory Whanau v Andrew Little, which I must say I was looking forward to. And I'll be honest; I wanted her to run. I wanted to know if Wellington as a city really believes in the green idealisms she promotes. This election was going to tell me whether it was a flash in the pan or whether it was real. But Tory has pulled out. What I can't quite work out is why this was announced on the same day that she stood on Courtenay Place with her brand new Bunnings shovel, digging up the ground to celebrate the start of the Golden Mile redevelopment works. Clearly, the hole she dug was simply too big. She couldn't climb out of it. Tory says her decision not to run is a better outcome for everybody involved. She now wants to run for the Māori ward on council. She also told the Herald this morning she'd like to be a government Minister one day. You can make your own mind up on that one. Now there have been rumours around Tory pulling out for a while now. Firstly, the rumour was she was going to pull out to let Justin Lester have a crack. Then Andrew Little stepped out of the shadows, and the rest is history. So now all we can do is reflect on her legacy. And what a legacy it is. Tory will always talk about the Golden Mile and her ambition to get the work underway. She'll always mention the amount of work the council has done on our pipes. She'll mention her fight to upgrade the council's social housing, and of course she'll praise her work on building the cycleways that split the city in more ways than one. She told me she rates her mayoralty a nine out of ten. But that's her saying those things. Wellington as a city will reflect on some more colourful aspects of her leadership. The drinking; Whanau admitted to being a bit tipsy when she left The Old Quarter restaurant without paying her bill, and how can we forget the alleged 'do you know who I am' comment. Who will forget Whanau bringing her dog into the council office. That was a no no. And in November 2023 she publicly acknowledged having an alcohol problem following a drunken incident at a bar. Then there was that interview on Wellington Mornings that made national news. Whanau, who earns $180,000 a year, mentioned she was selling her car to help pay her bills. She later admitted that the car had been sold months earlier, and her comments were supposedly taken out of context. But that's her personal legacy. What's her political legacy? Well she pushed the terrible Reading Cinema deal that was going to cost Wellington City Council $32 million in a corporate welfare deal. That failed. She advocated for the sale of the Wellington City Council's 34% stake in the Wellington International Airport. That failed. She got her Bunnings shovel out yesterday to dig up the Golden Mile, but most contracts still haven't been signed and it may never fully go ahead. I think it's fair to say most people in this city feel Wellington has gone backwards in the last three years. That's her legacy. Personally, I have always had a good relationship with Tory. Yes, she cut her connections with our programme. She felt it wasn't talking to her people, and she probably thought I was too tough on her. But we got along. I respected her, and while I didn't like a lot of what she did as mayor, she was a character. I did like the fact we had a character as mayor. Unfortunately for us, it went too far. We started to be the butt of everybody's jokes. Her decision yesterday is a bad good thing for Wellington. I'm sad we won't have an exciting race or a strong contest of ideas. But it means the city is guaranteed a new direction - something a lot of us have wanted for a long time. LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Tory Whanau's shock U-turn not to run for the Wellington mayoralty again marks three consecutive one-term mayors for the capital. Whanau has this morning revealed she's dropping out of the race, saying she wants to give Andrew Little a clearer run to victory. It means Whanau, along with the two previous mayors Andy Foster and Justin Lester, only served one term in the job. But do these sorts of crimes shock us like they used to? Also, all New Zealand exports to the United States will be stung with a 10% tariff, announced by President Donald Trump as part of his "liberation day" announcement. There are media outlets running stories almost daily unmasking these people as conspiracy theorists, warning that they're threatening to make the country “ungovernable” and telling us these people are ‘very' dangerous. What's the harm these conspiracy theorists can actually do if they get elected?  Yes some of them say they want to make New Zealand ungovernable and I don't like the sound of that but let's be realistic; It's local government, not parliament.  And what's more there might be one or two or a smattering of them on council. There is only so much disruption a couple of people can cause . We've had conspiracy theorists on council before.  We've even had them as mayors. Think of Sandra Goudie.  She seems to have some pretty kooky ideas about the vaccine. What harm did she actually do? Thames Coromandel district council still seems to be ticking along ok.  I say that as a ratepayer. Yes, many of them are concealing their links with conspiracy groups like Voices for Freedom but that's pretty normal in council level politics. Remember when Jacinda Arden tried to pretend Wellington mayor Justin Lester wasn't a Labour party mayor when he was?  And yes, they have some kooky ideas but so do the green party candidates who are already on Wellington council.  Frankly I'd rather take my chances with a conspiracy theorist than a 23 year old Green party councillor who actively tries to stop economic development in the capital city like the airport expanding. I don't mind giving these people media attention like the media outlets are.  They are fascinating.  I'm reading the stories. And having information is better than having none.  But wow, can we tone down the hype and scaremongering? Really, how much harm can these people actually do?  See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

A political lecturer says he would have been surprised if Justin Lester hadn't applied for an official vote recount. The outgoing mayor lost by just 62 votes to Andy Foster nearly two weeks ago.Lester handed his application into Wellington District Court on Friday afternoon. He says there's a strong case that votes ruled invalid should be included, which could change the results of the election.Lester says they spent close to $1 million on the election, so it's important to get it right.Massey University's Dr Andy Asquith told The Weekend Collective that Lester should be confident if the recount goes ahead. "If there is a recount, I think Justin Lester would come out on top."He says there are some votes that are in dispute of being disqualified. It'll now be up to a judge to decide if the recount goes ahead.

Ousted Justin Lester has officially called for a mayoral vote recount in Wellington. It comes after results put Mayor Andy Foster just 62 votes ahead of Lester to claim the city's top job.Lester was at the Wellington District Court this afternoon to lodge a request with a judge to recount the mayoral votes.Outside of court, he said he believed there was a "strong likelihood" there should be a manual recount. It would now be up to a judge to decide but there had been no indication of a timeframe, Lester said.Justin Lester and Graeme Edgeler outside Wellington District Court. Photo / Emme McKayWellington City Council uses the STV voting system, which sees voters rank their mayoral preferences. There were at least 302 partially informal votes which were excluded because voters filled the form out incorrectly. In Lester's formal application, it said 193 of the partially informal votes were in Lester's favour and 109 in Foster's."The 84-vote difference here would be enough to change the result, if on a close inspection of the votes they were held to express a valid preference between Mr Foster and Mr Lester," it reads. In response to people telling Lester to move on, he said they needed to make sure "they got it right.""This is a sliding doors moment for the city, there's a potential to end up with a New Zealand First mayor with Andy Foster verses a Labour mayor with very different values."I owe it to the 27,000 people who have voted for me, who have come out in large numbers and supported me and said we want you to do this recount and we want to make sure that democracy works and the election is transparent."Lester's legal counsel Graeme Edgeler said they had asked for a manual recount of the votes."How do you know that the computers got it right? The one way you do is someone has to look to check the computers were right."There had been instances in the United States with computer counts were they had done recounts and several hundred votes had changed, he said. There was also Winston Peters' recount from the 1978 general election.Edgeler said they would try and tell the judge it was the voter's "intent" that mattered and showing what the voters intended to do, particularly with the 302 partially informal votes.

Welcome to the World Wrestling Resource Podcast, we're joined today as we start looking towards the wrestling season and the upcoming World Championships with Jon McGovern, head coach at the University of Dubuque and two-time NCAA Division II champion, Terry Brands Freestyle World Champion and Associate Head Coach at the University of Iowa and Dennis Hall, Greco-Roman World Champion. Before we get into our discussion today, we'll pitch this to Coach McGovern to give you an understand of what the World Wrestling Resource is and the benefits of jumping on board with WWR --  Moving into our coaching discussion. Coach Brands, what should coaches be doing this fall to prepare for the season? -- Regardless of the program, what are the key points that college coaches need to understand about their athletes, whether it be Division I, Division III, NAIA?  -- Coach McGovern, being at the Division III level, what differences do you have to deal with when coaching your athletes. You've got guys who aren't scholarship athletes, you might even have some playing other sports. You've got an interesting perspective, since you've also coached at the Division I level as well. Coach Hall, youth wrestling and wrestling below the high school level has exploded with big participation numbers, USA Wrestling has record membership numbers, so there are a lot more kids wrestling. What can youth parents and coaches do for their sons and daughters to prepare for the upcoming season? Now we move to the upcoming World Championships in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. The U.S. is bringing an extremely exciting team to the mats in freestyle. Coach Brands, before we talk about the individual athletes, as a whole, you were coming through in an era with some great teams. How do you think today's World Team compares to some of the great teams you were on in the past? -- Specifically about the two athletes from the Hawkeye Wrestling Club, you've got a first-timer in Tony Ramos and you've got a three-timer with Brent Metcalf. It might be a loaded question to ask what do you expect from them, but ... well, what do you expect from them? Dennis, we've got a new national team coach in Greco-Roman with Matt Lindland. The U.S. hasn't won a medal in Greco-Roman wrestling since Dremiel Byers won silver back in 2009. What does Coach Lindland have to do to get our World and Olympic Teams to start winning medals again? -- This year's team has a mix of experience and youth. Spenser Mango is on his seventh-straight World or Olympic Team, he was fifth last year. Justin Lester is a two-time world medalist and he is taking advantage of the new weight class at 71kg. Then there's repeat World Teamers as well with Andy Bisek, Jordan Holm, Robby Smith. What are you hoping to see in Uzbekistan and how well do you think Team USA can perform? -- We recently wrapped up the annual NWCA Convention in Fort Lauderdale, and Jon you were there and some of the key topics were about focusing on what the critical areas for wrestling are, skin infections and prevention and of course, the National Duals. What were some of the takeaways you got from the Convention on a program-specific level and from a wrestling in general perspective?

There was a lot to take in on Tuesday at the Fargodome in Fargo, North Dakota. We had Greco-Roman Phase II World Team Trials, Junior Greco-Roman Finals and Junior Women’s freestyle finals. Tuesday’s the craziest day here in Fargo, so sit back, relax and take your time, because it’s time for another Fargo Update coming up NOW on the Short Time Wrestling Podcast. LET’S START BY GETTING INTO ALL OF THIS STUFFThe Army's Justin Lester made his seventh U.S. World Team with two straight victories over Pat Smith of the Minnesota Storm in the Phase II Trials at 71kg. Lester, a World bronze medalist in 2006 and 2007, made things look easy in the first match of the best-of-three series, teching Smith 9-0 in 54 seconds. The second time around, it was a bit more of a battle as Lester got past Smith 2-1. Smith took the early lead with a pushout, but Lester matched him with a pushout of his own to effectively take the lead. Smith tried pushing the pace, but Lester tacked on a pushout with 32 seconds remaining to cement his lead and join the team heading to Uzbekistan in September. Joe Rau, who won a Junior Greco-Roman title for Illinois back in 2009, earned a spot on the U.S. World Team at 80kg after defeating 2012 Olympian Ben Provisor in two straight matches. Rau beat Provisor in the first match 1-0 with the decisive point coming on Provisor's second caution. In the second match, Rau, wrestling for the Minnesota Storm, used a pushout from a front headlock position in the first period. It would be the only point of the match as Rau would again win 1-0. It's Rau's second World Team berth of the summer. He recently competed at the World University Championships in Hungary at 85kg.JUNIOR GRECOCalifornia's Randon Miranda started out the night with a 14-4 techincal fall victory over Connecticut's Zack Murillo at 100 pounds. Miranda captured the second leg of the Junior Triple Crown. He won the Folkstyle Nationals earlier this year. Miranda led from start to finish, but got in trouble early after Murillo stepped over and put Miranda to his back. Miranda built a 7-2 lead until Murillo stepped over again, but Miranda avoided trouble and then scored three more takedowns to ice the victory.Arizona's Danny Vega won the state's ninth overall Junior Greco-Roman title with a 7-2 victory over Todd Small of Georgia at 106. At the Cadet level, Vega as second in Greco last year and won a freestyle championship. Like Miranda, he's still eligible to win the Triple Crown after winning Folkstyle Nationals earlier this year. Idaho's Dorian Sapien took home the title at 113 pounds with a 12-6 victory over Kansas' Corbin Nirschl. Sapien fell behind early, but hit a big four-point armspin that changed the pace of the match. Sapien won Idaho's ninth all-time Junior Greco-Roman title. Skyler Petry's stellar summer continued as the Minnesota native topped New Jersey's Anthony Cefolo 2-1 at 120 pounds. Petry scored a takedown early in the match and only gave up a late point. Petry, bound for the University of Minnesota, becomes Minnesota's 34th Junior Greco-Roman champion. Utah's Taylor Lamont wrestled up to the Junior level and came away with a national title. Lamont doesn't compete on Sundays, and he's still in the Cadet age group, so since the Junior tournament started on Monday, he competed there and it didn't seem to make much difference. At 126 pounds Lamont fell behind early to Kegan Calkins of Illinois, but after Lamont tied it up with a takedown, he launched Calkins with a nice reverse lift for five points. It's all the scoring that would take place in Lamont's 7-2 win. New York's William Koll picked up a title with a punishingly dominant 11-0 victory at 132 pounds over New Jersey's William Kui. Koll countered a headlock attempt to get a takedown, then hit a big five pointer to build a 7-0 lead. Koll then finished Kui off scoring a takedown and a two-point gutwrench. Koll is the son of Cornell head coach Rob Koll.
