Did you know Virginia treats truancy and chronic absenteeism as two different issues? Instead of jumping straight to punishment, schools focus on early communication, family meetings, and finding solutions before legal action is considered. The goal is simple: keep students engaged, remove attendance barriers, and help more kids stay on track for success.

The threat of prosecution for truancy is effective at getting absent students re-enrolled at school, according to the Associate Minister of Education. It's been revealed the parents of an alleged chronic truant are being taken to court by the government as part of crackdown on absent students. The Minister responsible for school attendance David Seymour said 34 cases have formally been notified to Ministry Of Education's Prosecution Unit, with 17 cases resolved before it got to court. But some don't believe heading to court is the way to achieve that goal. Scott Liddell, acting Principal of Kaiapoi High School spoke to Lisa Owen.

We are back with the second part of our conversation with Dr. Dennis. Our previous episode covered the escalating attendance crisis and how we can address it with new evaluations and data-collection tools. We are excited to dive deeper into this important subject through Dr. Dennis' expertise and passion. Join us!Dr. Dennis Lefevre recently served as the Executive Director of Student Support Services in a small, high-performing school district in southern CA. Before that role, he worked in various capacities in public, non-public, and private school settings with thousands of preschool, elementary, and secondary students. He had a front-row seat to the unfolding attendance crisis and became increasingly frustrated with the lack of ownership among schools, homes, and communities. He is now piloting a new kind of evaluation that is an intensive data collection process designed to lower the threshold enough to get students back on campus. As an educational psychologist in private practice, Dr. Dennis started an agency called Back at School, which offers consultations, advocacy, targeted data collection, interventions, workshops, and more to help the attendance crisis.Show Highlights:A new approach based on revising the BIP (Behavior Intervention Plan): the AIP (Attendance Intervention Plan)Creative interventions for attendance challengesDifferentiating between school refusal and truancySchool refusal is typically an attempt to escape aversive stimuli, like bullying, tests, social phobias, and separation anxiety.Truancy is characterized by defiance, a pursuit of external rewards, and developmentally inappropriate rebellious behavior.Educators are trained to treat all students the same, which doesn't allow for specialized needs. Why it's important to ask, “Is this a performance deficit or a skills deficit?”Providing even a small amount of control or choice to the student can be very effective.Resources:Connect with Dr. Dennis Lefevre: WebsiteContact us on social media or through our website for more information on the IEP Learning Center: www.inclusiveeducationproject.org.Thank you for listening!Don't forget to SUBSCRIBE to the show to receive every new episode delivered straight to your podcast player every Tuesday. If you enjoyed this episode and believe in our message, please help us get the word out about this podcast. Rising fuel prices could drive up truancy just as the government is trying to bring it down. Attendance services say transport is a major reason some families struggle to get their children to school and petrol price rises will make it worse. Education correspondent John Gerritsen reports.
There are early signs the government's overhaul of local truancy services is working. Education correspondent John Gerritsen reports.

On Episode 143 of the Guest Speaker series, we welcome Connecticut's very own 4KPHIL. to the show! 4KPHIL. is a hip-hop artist who's steadily been making a name for himself in New England and beyond, including his track “Young Picasso” (produced by soupy2k) being featured on NBA2K22, as well as single “Truancy” found its way on multiple editorial playlists and has amassed over half a million streams on Spotify alone. 4KPHIL. sits down with Mike to have one of the most candid conversations the podcast has seen so far this year. 4KPHIL. shares a deeply personal story about being the victim of gun violence, one that he has seldom shared publicly before. Ultimately that experience shifted his life forever as he completely put all of his efforts into music from there on out, and has never looked back. From there, 4KPHIL. & Mike have an open and honest conversation about their views regarding gun violence in America in general. The guys also touch on some lighter topics, including 4KPHIL. becoming a father and the impact his son has on his life and music career, as well as the collective of artists and creatives based in Minnesota known as Paperjack Productions whom he has formed an important bond with. They also discuss some of 4KPHIL's experiences in Minnesota which include his favorite spots on Eat Street, riding a mechanical bull at the Mall of America, his strong stance on Drake as an artist, and so much more. Typically, October is a busy month for us as we are already a couple of months into the new school year; reality has set in, and winter/holiday breaks are fast approaching. Today's focus comes from a lively topic of discussion that was posted on our Instagram last week: an update on CA Assembly Bill 461, which repeals a 2011 Truancy Law. That law provided for criminal misdemeanor charges, fines, and jail time for parents of chronically truant children or for a student over 18 with chronic truancy. The problem is that the law disproportionately affects low-income students and those with disabilities, some of whom are fighting for the accommodations and support they need. The new law repeals the 2011 law and sets forth a plan for supportive strategies instead of punishments. Join us to learn more!Show Highlights:The backfiring of the 2011 law: The first case prosecuted a person of color with a child with sickle-cell anemia while she was trying to get additional accommodations in place.Governor Newsome's perspective on the new law, effective January 2026, is that this is a social issue and not a criminal problem. The problems families face in receiving attendance letters when they are actively trying to get their kids into schoolMany parents are trying to find ways to ensure it is safe for their child to go to school. Hundreds of thousands of students are skipping out on school early, as school attendance rates drop sharply in the days leading up to school holidays. It is thought cheaper airfares and accommodation are driving parents to let their children play truant. Auckland's St Peters College headmaster, James Betley spoke to Lisa Owen.
State police investigate death threats made against members of the Kentucky Parole Board following the release of Ronald Exantus, Amy McGrath talks about preparing for her third campaign, and a panel of lawmakers hear potential solutions for tackling truancy issues in Kentucky schools.
Students' attitudes towards truancy are said to be turning around. A new Education Review Office report has found six out of ten students attend regularly – back to pre-Covid levels, but still down on 2015. It also found 80% think education is important for their futures, and 75% think attending every day is important. Deputy Chief Executive Ruth Shinoda told Mike Hosking there's still more work to do. She says seven in ten children went to school regularly in 2015 and the government wants to increase that to eight in ten by 2030. LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

David Seymour says the Government's winning because attendance is improving. The Associate Education Minister's putting $140 million towards improving attendance over four years, promising to reach twice the number of students. Extra support is going to 170 schools with chronic absence. Seymour told Mike Hosking when defining our long-term future, the thing that matters most is getting kids into class. He says throwing money at the problem helps, and this is a better use of taxpayer money to make sure children stay in schools. LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
It's Thursday and that means it's time to catch up on politics with The Times-Picayune/New Orleans Advocate's editorial director and columnist, Stephanie Grace. Today, we break down the latest in the New Orleans mayor's race, including fundraising, poll numbers and what it means to be a “New Orleanian.” Louisiana schools have made some big strides in recent years. Math and reading scores are as high – or higher – than they were before the pandemic. According to one analysis, Louisiana is the only state that has made a full recovery in both subjects and has continued to improve. But there's another data point that's been harder to move: Attendance. Misty Davis, executive director of attendance strategies at the Louisiana Department of Education, tells us more about targeting truancy. This week on Louisiana Considered, we're bringing you Wetlands Radio, a series about coastal restoration from producer Eve Abrams. Data analysis shows little evidence of success from a fund that has been giving schools $10 million-a-year to tackle truancy. Education correspondent John Gerritsen spoke to Corin Dann.
Pushing to prosecute parents of chronically truant kids is a pointless exercise according to one school principal. Associate Education Minister David Seymour is leading the government charge to get more kids back in class. He's announced the Education Ministry is proactively contacting schools and attendance officers to make sure parents of chronically absent students are referred to them for possible prosecution. Rangiora High School Principal Bruce Kearney spoke to Lisa Owen.
Parents who refuse to send their children to school are more likely to be prosecuted as the government cracks down on truancy. Association Education Minister David Seymour spoke to reporter Lauren Crimp.
A primary school principal in Whangarei had earlier called for exactly this - in 2019 Horahora primary's Pat Newman called for more prosecutions for parents who deliberately fail to send their kids to school. But six years on, he has changed his mind. Pat Newman spoke to Paddy Gower.
The government's announced 140 million dollars to help boost school attendance as it battles to reach its target of 80 percent of students at school for 90 percent of the term by 2030. As part of that the Associate Education Minister David Seymour's been talking to people working to keep kids in class. At a recent press conference he name dropped one in particular, Philippa Dravitski from Freyberg High School in Palmerston North. Dravitski spoke to Lisa Owen.
Hillsdale College Radio General Manager and Radio Free Hillsdale Hour host Scot Bertram fills in for Jim on 3 Martini Lunch. Scot and Greg react to the breaking news of Joe Biden's advanced prostate cancer diagnosis and the new questions it raises about his administration's transparency, the painful recordings of Biden and Special Counsel Robert Hur, and shocking attendance failures in Chicago Public Schools that officials keep rewarding.First, they discuss the serious and sad revelation that former President Biden is battling prostate cancer that has metastasized to his bones. But this news also shines the spotlight even brighter on what Biden and his staff knew while he was president and whether they covered up this health crisis as well as his cognitive decline. And can we believe anything they tell us?Next, Scot and Greg examine the newly released audio from Biden's October 2023 interview with Special Counsel Robert Hur. The tapes directly contradict Democrats' spin and support Hur's conclusion that Biden was mentally diminished. Scot also stresses that the recent revelations in books and interviews are just a drop in the bucket and there are still many serious questions that linger. But the Biden team and the media have little incentive to answer them. Finally, they spotlight alarming data out of Chicago, where 25 percent of public school students missed at least 35 days of school last year. That's double the pre-pandemic absentee rate. But somehow graduation numbers continue to rise. Local school officials blame parents for no longer prioritizing in-person school attendance, but Scot and Greg know exactly who is responsible for creating that mindset. Please visit our great sponsors:If I needed to find a doctor quickly, Zocdoc is what I'd use. A Pennsylvania Hall of Fame voter is getting ready to vote for the 82nd year in a row. WITF's Jordan Wilkie introduces us to Lorraine Koons of Lebanon County--who, before she was old enough to vote, worked at the Middletown Air Depot to support the World War II effort by helping build and repair B-17 bombers. When students are routinely missing class, Pennsylvania schools must offer to meet with families before turning to legal action. But educators -- and judges -- are telling lawmakers the supports they can offer families are limited. A Central Pennsylvania lawmaker is facing backlash after posting an online video involving a flamethrower. Sen. Dawn Keefer, a York County Republican, faces criticism after posting a video in which she torches Gov. Josh Shapiro’s budget proposal with a flamethrower--a month after Shapiro and his family were evacuated from the Governor’s Residence during a firebombing that left part of the building badly damaged. A former Lancaster city police officer was mistakenly overpaid $114,000 in retirement benefits over the last three years. That's according to an audit of the bureau’s pension plan. The Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency is opening a new center to better train first responders to handle crisis situations. The agency is launching a statewide Crisis Intervention Team Technical Assistance Center — the first of its kind in the nation. In a pre-Budget announcement, associate education minister David Seymour said he wants to overhaul and improve the attendance services charged with getting chronically absent kids back to class. He unveiled a 140 million dollar package to get attendance numbers up over the next four years. The move follows a critical ERO report last year that said the services were under-funded and ineffective. Education correspondent John Gerritsen reports.
A government call for mayors to help battle truancy is cheeky and completely at odds with earlier instructions for councils to stick to roads and pipes and keep their noses out of everything else. That from Porirua Mayor Anita Baker, in reponse to a letter from the Associate Minister of Education. David Seymour has written to Aotearoa's mayors asking them to help boost school attendance. He's refered them to daily attendance data and is encouraging them to quote "lead the change they want to see." Porirua mayor Anita Baker spoke to Lisa Owen.

Let's begin the count with this fact: Kamala Harris has a horrible record with women Sure, Kamala Harris “networked” her way up the ladder—and hey, she's not the first to do it. Plenty of ambitious folks have used every tool at their disposal. But if you're going to trade favors for advancement, at least show up with some skills once you land the job. Let's be honest: Willie Brown wasn't exactly a heartthrob, and Harris wasn't exactly gracing the covers of beauty magazines either. But in sales, we call her choice “the ultimate sacrifice.” Willie got a career boost on his arm, and Harris got a rung up on the political ladder, even if she missed a few rungs in the competence department. The real kicker? Harris didn't just embarrass herself—she embarrassed the entire league of ambitious “hussies” who came before her. Many used their, ahem, “influence” not just to benefit themselves but to make some waves for other women. Harris? She went for herself. [SEGMENT 1-3] Freedom Coming 3 [X] SB – Dana White on mindboggling position we face Harris has a horrible record in public service Kamala Harris exemplified Jekyll and Hyde when you line up her actions with her “principles.” Case in point: she once gleefully recounted her marijuana use. While this could pass as a minor issues, except for the fact that she locked up countless Black men for doing the same thing. But hey, when you're riding that political elevator, a little hypocrisy shouldn't slow the ascent. And let's talk about her so-called “criminal justice record.” Harris loves to paint herself as the law-and-order warrior, boasting she's prosecuted “hundreds” of cases. The truth? It's closer to 20, if that. In the spirit of her old boss, Harris "padded" her resume more than a Schoch. As for going after criminal masterminds, look at what Harris considered a heinous crime. Truancy. But instead of working to understand why children were missing school, Harris to a sledge hammer to a thumbtack and decided to prosecute parents. Yes, Harris targeted and arrested parents of children who school. But her reason was not born of concern for students' academic success. Instead, Harris pursued this course because the state of California loses funding when attendance drops. No funding, no money for the state coffers—that's the math she cared about. And for families who couldn't pay the fines? Tough luck. Harris wasn't about to let a single mom's struggles get in the way of her precious attendance counts. Clearly, Harris prioritized the state's budget over families' stability. I know the feeling—my family's down to one car thanks to a supply-chain crisis courtesy of the Biden-Harris duo. Now my son's late to first period every day. But in Kamala's world, that means I could be up for “truancy crimes,” and she'd probably cackle as they hauled me in. [SEGMENT 1-4] Freedom Coming 4 I said I would discuss something that didn't seem like that big of a deal, until you put it in perspective. And that's a comment made by Democrat Congressman Jamie Raskin. The most dangerous people on the planet are the American Leftists. They have no limits to which they won't pursue power and wealth. And that includes assassinating a president. Watch as Democrat Congressman Jamie Raskin explains how Democrats operate their "peaceful transition of power". [X] SB – Jamie Raskin Steal it in the states, DOJ, or with election officials Democrats honor elections Pol Sci: fascists Don't accept the outcome Embrace political violence Organized “top down” Raskin just revealed Democrats' plan. Because Democrats are bold enough to tell you what they plan, but pretending it's what the other side is planning. While many people won't say the obvious out loud, I will do so. Again. And I will simultaneously translate what Raskin said: "Democrats cheated in 2020 and stole the election from Donald Trump. But they know they can't steal this one, so they want a Trump win to appear to be Trump's theft of the 2024 election." The reason Democrats didn't want a second Trump term is simple: Trump was effective at Phase I of draining the swamp of the people who have milked and bilked American citizens for decades. But the Democrats made a few grave mistakes. First, the blatant theft of the election, and the things that triggered it. For example, working with the Chinese to release a bug that allowed for the theft. Yes, our National Institute of Health led by Fauci the fraud colluded with the Chinese to release the Wuhan, aka China Virus around the world. The intent of the release was to cause governments, specifically America to keep citizens at home. This led to mail-in ballots, which Democrats pre-printed with Biden. At the appropriate time, 3A Eastern time, operatives stole the election from Trump. Second, Democrats orchestrated January 6, working with terror groups and the FBI [I know, redundant] to pretend that Trump didn't want a "peaceful transition of power". Obama's "peaceful transition of power" Before I continue, let's go back 2016, when Obama promised a peaceful transition of power. In fact what Obama did was work with his Department of Justice to actually target and persecute Trump from Day One of his election victory. Recall that Admiral Rogers blew the whistle on Obama and informed Trump that his base of operations at Trump Tower have been compromised. Yes, Obama's DOJ was spying on Trump's transition team. Next, Obama's FBI targeted Trump transition team members, specifically General Flynn in order to disrupt Trump's ability to begin draining the swamp. During the 4 years of Trump's presidency, Obama's legacy DOJ worked a bullsh*t Russian collusion story, and wholly ignored the real criminal in that particular case, Hillary Clinton. As we would learn, Clinton's team started this nonsense of Russian collusion and the FBI knew the story was bogus from the start. By the end of Trump's term, panic set in for Democrats, because Trump actually followed through with his campaign promise to MAGA. Thus, the remnant Obama DOJ plotted the successful coup of 2020. Nick Timiraos of The Wall Street Journal writes: “The Federal Reserve voted to lower interest rates by a half percentage point, opting for a bolder start in making its first reduction since 2020. The long-anticipated pivot followed an all-out fight against inflation the central bank launched two years ago. Eleven of 12 Fed voters backed the cut, which will bring the benchmark federal-funds rate to a range between 4.75% and 5%. Quarterly projections released Wednesday showed a narrow majority of officials penciled in cuts that would lower rates by at least a quarter point each at meetings in November and December.” You can read the full article here: https://www.wsj.com/economy/central-banking/fed-cuts-rates-by-half-percentage-point-03566d82 4:20pm- While speaking to the press after announcing a 0.50% interest rate cut, Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell said: “The U.S. economy is in a good place and our decision today is designed to keep it there.” Though, he stopped short of saying the Fed was ready to declare victory over inflation. 4:30pm- Dr. EJ Antoni—Research Fellow in The Heritage Foundation's Grover M.
