In the Texas state legislature, Christian Democratic Representative James Talarico gave a biblically-based rebuke against a Republican Christian nationalist bill to post the Ten Commandments in all public school classrooms — and it went viral. The repeal of the U.K.'s notorious “no promo homo” Section 28 and the opening of Lord of the Rings: Return of the King made mid-December 2003 a joyous season for world-renowned actor Sir Ian McKellen. He greeted the news at an LGBTQ gathering at Premiere House in Wellington, New Zealand (recorded by Hugh Young of Access Radio's GayBC). And in NewsWrap: Uganda's infamous Anti-Homosexuality Act 2023 faces a quadruple challenge in the nation's Constitutional Court, Scotland's Gender Recognition Reform Bill loses the first round of its fight for approval from the British government, Jordanian queer activists forced to flee from government persecution, Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers vetoes a Republican bill to ban pediatric gender-affirming healthcare, Florida defends school board book bans as the government's right to control libraries, Bucks County, Pennsylvania voters celebrate rescuing their school board from right-wing extremists, and more international LGBTQ news reported this week by Michael Taylor-Gray and Kalyn Hardman (produced by Brian DeShazor). But low-budget broadcasting isn't the only way to reach communities with content these days. Does access radio have a digital-age future?

Floresville-area amateur radio enthusiasts and community members can now access a local repeater station. Leroy Kotzur has announced a repeater station for Floresville on GMRS, similar to amateur radio. He said it's a great way to keep in contact for emergencies in case cell phone use goes out because of storms or other events that can cause power outages. A GMRS radio is similar to a CB radio, with up to 50 watt maximum; the repeater also can be used by walkie-talkies capable of accessing the GMRS frequencies. The repeater can reach from 12 to 18 miles, depending on terrain....Article Link

This week on Wellington Rocks we talk to alternative indie dance pop band, Same Name Confusion. Formed in Christchurch by vocalist Luke Courtney and guitarists Alvin Bartley and Andrej Radosavljevic while in their final year at university, Same Name Confusion soon moved to Wellington after a brief period gigging in Christchurch and Dunedin. Like other Christchurch bands to make the move to Welly, they soon found their place in the scene with their danceable indie pop mixed with humorous lyrics about the mundane ordinary lives of many young New Zealanders. Last year they released their EP "In Theory" with the tracks "Must Be Lucky" and "Not Fake News" receiving airtime on student radio around the country. We talk to Luke about the bands origins, reasons for the move to Wellington, the spectacular live show and their future plans. Wellington Rocks is bought to you by Access Radio and NZ On Air. Cooper Wall is a Wide Receiver for the War Eagles of Davie County HS located in Mocksville, NC. He finished last Friday's game versus West Forsyth High School with 9 catches for 109 yards and one touchdown. Access Radio covered the game from the Davie County sideline. Although Davie County took a tough loss that night, I was amazed by this kid's never say die attitude. Cooper played 100% from whistle to whistle. When times got tough, he still continued to fight the good fight never giving up. I am very excited for this interview, and can't wait to hear what this young man has to say. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/cast_of_champions/support
