Soren Sorensen is an educator and filmmaker. And a Zebras fan. His first feature-length documentary, My Father’s Vietnam (2016), features interviews, never-before-seen photographs, and 8mm footage of the era, to tell the story of three soldiers, only one of whom returned home alive. His new short film “With Dad” is a beautiful film about art and Alzheimer’s and love. This episode is a heavy one. Sending virtual hugs. It’s the 30th anniversary of legendary filmmaker Charles Burnett’s excellent To Sleep With Anger so who better to celebrate it’s birthday than the man responsible for it? Scott & Marcus were honored to sit with Mr. Burnett to chat about everything from spirituality & old school superstitions to the importance of paying homage to our ancestors that came before us. But this episode is bigger than just celebrating the anniversary of a landmark film. We wanted to do our part to show certain pockets of movie fans that Charles Burnett’s cinema goes beyond Killer Of Sheep & My Brother’s Wedding (a film most people wouldn’t have seen had it not been included in the special features of the remastered DVD Milestone release of Killer Of Sheep). Burnett’s filmography spans over 50 years, and it was wonderful to check in about this gem- though My Brother’s Wedding and Killer of Sheep were mentioned of course. Like F Gary Gray, Wendell B Harris and Matty Rich, Charles Burnett is another black filmmaker that never had a major alliance or association with other prominent black film movements/cliques like Robert Townsend/Keenen Ivory Wayans, Spike Lee/Ernest Dickerson or Lee Daniels/Tyler Perry. He’s always had to make his own path (and in doing so he’s left behind an incredibly underrated body of work that continues on today). Thanks to it’s recent Blu-ray & DVD re-release by Criterion Collection, To Sleep With Anger has found a new audience/lane of fans, so this episode serves as a nice additional supplement. This was over a year in the making so we hope you not only enjoy this discussion, but come back to it for multiple listens in the future. Hey remember a couple episodes ago when we had Saskia Kahn (@ohsaskia) on to discuss Eliza Hittman’s excellent Never Rarely Sometimes Always? If you didn’t, it was a good one. Saskia brought some great insight. Eliza heard the episode. Eliza Hittman is an award winning director and writer. Her short films and features are huge favorites among the Zebras, and have won awards and have been shown in many prestigious festivals, one of them being the Silver Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival for Never Rarely Sometimes Always. Eliza was gracious enough to talk with us (and Saskia of course) about her films, her Brooklyn experience, influences, challenges, and we even got cameos from her family. We have been talking about Hittman’s films since Episode 5 or so, so this is a huge accomplishment.
