Enjoy what becomes the Take-Up's most polarized discussion, as our hosts go into whether Guillermo del Toro's new Frankenstein creation has a soul worthy of a few Oscar noms or is a Netflix monstrosity dead on arrival. Debates on the director's camerawork, how much Del Toro's take gels with all the other adaptations that arose from Mary Shelley's novel, and if Elordi is the hottest Creature of all ensue. Next, they have One More Thing, keeping the gothic talk going with Andrea Arnold and William Wyler's adaptations of Wuthering Heights (as well as some thoughts on Emerald Fennel's brat summer take on the classic story) and Abel Ferrara's cyberpunk thriller New Rose Hotel.Next week, Josh and Andrew continue their Oscar talk with one of the most acclaimed films from last year, Ryan Coogler's gangster/musical/horror smash Sinners! Prepare to sink your teeth into a film bursting with genre-bending and commentary fit for a long discussion. Welcome to The Reel Schmooze with ToI film reviewer Jordan Hoffman and host Amanda Borschel-Dan, where we bring you all the entertainment news and film reviews a Jew can use. The "Schmoovie" of the week is "Marty Supreme," starring Timothée Chalamet (who also co-produced), Gwyneth Paltrow, Odessa A'zion, Kevin O'Leary, Tyler Okonma, Abel Ferrara and Fran Drescher. It was produced and directed by Josh Safdie, who also co-wrote the script, alongside Ronald Bronstein. Like the very Jewish film it is, it arrived to the world on December 25 and so Borschel-Dan had to make a rare outing into a Jerusalem cinema. She brings back the unique impressions from an Israeli crowd watching this utterly Yiddishe story set in 1950s Lower East Side New York -- especially how they reacted to Holocaust references. Hoffman, who recently interviewed director Safdie about the film for Vanity Fair, gives us the inside scoop on the crazy cast of characters that flesh out the "junkyard Jews" at the heart of the tale. The pair keeps the conversation very general -- no spoilers! -- for the first half of the episode, but then get Talmudically into the weeds for the second. Hear about our very first unreserved top-marking "not bad" from both hosts on this week's The Reel Schmooze. The Reel Schmooze is produced by Ari Schlacht and can be found wherever you get your podcasts. From acclaimed director Josh Safdie (Uncut Gems, Good Time) comes yet another intense thriller....sort of....THIS time focusing on the trevails of Marty Mouser (Oscar-nominee Timothee Chalamet) who's an aspiring table tennis player working his way up the tournament circuit in the early 1950's.  Of course, his journey towards attempting to become a world-class ping pong athlete becomes increasingly complicated as Marty is so impulsive and selfish that he starts to get in his own way.  What results is a high-wire character study featuring an array of eccentric and/or dangerour characters whom Marty encounters along the way played by a VERY unique cast including Gwyneth Paltrow, Odessa A'zion, Tyler the Creator, Emory Cohen, Geza Rohrig, Fran Drescher, Abel Ferrara, and Kevin O'Leary.  (Yes the SAME Kevin O'Leary from "Shark Tank") Host: Geoff GershonEdited By Ella GershonProducer: Marlene Gershon  Send us a textSupport the showhttps://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/

Still pure Walken. What we coverCrime and capitalism: Frank's twisted logic — kill the competition, save the city. The Walken mystique: Dead eyes, slick hair, spontaneous robot dances.Larry Fishburne's “Jimmy Jump”: One of the great chaotic sidekicks — all swagger, coke, and AK-47s.Cops vs crooks: Caruso and Snipes as furious detectives who decide to skip due process and go full vigilante.Ferrara's vision: A New York that's nihilistic, sweaty, and corrupt from top to bottom. The politics of power: Race, class, loyalty, and the delusion of doing “good” through evil. The ending: Blood, subways, and one of Walken's best death scenes — calm, eerie, inevitable. Why listen?Because it's peak Bad Dads territory: a film that's stylish, sleazy, and morally bankrupt, yet impossible to look away from. We argue about whether Frank's warped Robin Hood act has any truth to it, trade notes on 1990s cop-movie chaos, and try to work out how this didn't end every actor's career.

Given her work in and around cinema, it's no surprise that Stephanie LaCava would write a novel that is, no small feat, cinematic. Said novel is Nymph, a slim and elliptical and fully satisfying character piece about a young woman, Bathory––called “Bat” for short––whose parents' strange lifestyle, either involving spy craft or assassinations or just being out-and-out weirdos, brings her down dark corners. Having known Stephanie for a little bit, I already knew she was worth talking to. (An important quality for any podcast guest.) But when she sent me the book last month, I read it with enough speed and relish that it was no question we should talk about Nymph, the Chantal Akerman and Abel Ferrara films that inspired it, and the complex personal feelings these things can raise. While I hope you like our conversation, I mostly hope it drives one to reading Stephanie's novel. In this episode, we sink our teeth into The Addiction (1995), Abel Ferrara's moody, black-and-white vampire film that's as much about Sartre and sin as it is about blood. We unpack the heavy philosophy behind the movie's take on evil, addiction, and moral decay — and ask whether vampirism is just a metaphor for being human. Along the way, we wrestle with Nazi imagery, existential dread, and whether philosophy helps or just makes everything way more confusing.

Shot in stark, vivid black & white cinematography and featuring a breathtaking lead performance by the great Lili Taylor, the film explores vampirism as a natural extension of the maladies of the world, a physical expression of the spiritual sickness of existing in modernity as a subject of the American Empire. We begin with a discussion of Abel Ferrara as director, his unsparing eye for difficult subject matter, and the unexpected tenderness and humanism that emanates from such an exacting body of work. Then, we explore the film's multifaceted take on vampirism, simultaneously allegorizing addiction, spiritual retribution, and a subjective manifestation of imperial blowback. Finally, we discuss the potency of a film that locates a cutlural zeitgeist and comment on its afflictions through formalism rather than mimeography, conjuring the essence of a historical-material milieu rather than seeking shallow pattern recognition.Follow Peter Raleigh on Twitter.Read and Subscribe to Peter's Substack Long Library.Read Peter on Abel Ferrara's The Addiction.....Our theme song is "Mirror" by Chris Fish

You'd have to be very bad at interviews, or really just conversations, to not get something from Abel Ferrara, who's the perfect combination of endearing and pugnacious, amenable to ideas while unable to entertain even a hint of bullshit. He's especially verbose discussing Turn in the Wound, his most recent documentary, which premiered at last year's Berlinale and is now streaming on the Criterion Channel and parallels the effect of Russia's war on the citizens of Ukraine with, in a slightly opaque but ultimately wise manner, concerts conducted by Patti Smith. Like many of Ferrara's documentaries––Mulberry St., Chelsea on the Rocks, or Piazza Vittorio––it wrings pathos from a concern for people and the places they live. I was only too happy to talk with him about this film and its endless concerns. I also want to note that myself and Instagram sensation Rohmer Fits will be screening Éric Rohmer's A Summer's Tale on Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday of this week's posting. This week Bryan and Dave take you back to the New York City of 1990 with a look at what might be Abel Ferrara's most focused movie, King of New York. With a dynamite cast of killers, including Christopher Walken at his best, Laurence Fishburne carrying practically the entire movie on his shoulders, David Caruso, Wesley Snipes, and Giancarlo Esposito, King of New York presents a morally gray crime movie where everyone, even the cops, are just the worst. Crime is the blood that keeps the city alive in this movie and an unreliable narrator is going to do his best to convince you that his crusade to run the criminal underground and thereby the entire city is just, good, and right. Stylish, slick, and kinetic, King of New York is like a Pixies song with loud, outrageous, and violent scenes of criminal carnage punctuated by quiet meditations on morality. It's bleak, nihilistic, and the brothers can't help but notice that this very-much American cops and robbers movie feels much, much more like the Italian Polizziotteschi reflections which makes the film's subtle social and political undertones feel that much more pronounced.Join the Bring Me The Axe Discord: https://discord.gg/snkxuxzJSupport Bring Me The Axe! on Patreon: https://patreon.com/bringmetheaxepodBuy Bring Me The Axe merch here:https://www.bonfire.com/store/bring-me-the-axe-podcast/
