Tamsin Chislett, CEO of Hyfe, highlights the importance of understanding coughs for healthcare providers, the lack of information about coughs, and Hyfe's advancements in building a database and developing biomarkers based on different kinds of coughs. Hyfe's AI technology, which can integrate with other devices and platforms for remote patient monitoring, enables passive, continuous tracking of cough patterns that can be used in research and clinical trials. Opportunities for digital therapeutics include chronic cough, COPD, lung cancer, respiratory infections, and cardiovascular diseases.  Tamsin elaborates, "Hyfe is the global leader in AI power. The problem we're trying to solve is that you have this really common symptom cough, which has been experienced by every human alive and is experienced daily by many people, yet to discuss it, measure it, monitor it, or even manage it, we're entirely reliant on subjective data. Everyone's had the experience of going into a primary care doctor, and saying I've got a really bad cough. The doctor says How bad is it, and is it getting worse?  We don't even have the proper language to describe it." "We want to get to the point where, in those situations, the doctor can start to get objective data about the patient's cough patterns and use that instead. The way we see it is that there was a time when to measure fever, we put a hand on a patient's forehead. We hope that within a few years, thanks to Hyfe's technology, we should not be in the same position with cough. So we're always looking to have objective data." "I think the interesting thing about cough is that because it's never been measurable, it hasn't been studied anywhere near as much as it probably should have. And even in the first five years of Hyfe's life, we've seen an explosion in cough-related science now that it's possible to monitor coughs with a smartphone, a smart watch, or anything with a microphone running Hyfe's technology. We've seen exciting science across a whole range, many of which are intuitive when you start thinking about cough, acute cough is a big one and respiratory infections, but there's also chronic cough."  "There's also COPD, there's IPF, there's lung cancer, there are so many respiratory and even cardiology diseases where cough is a cardinal symptom, a really clear sign of exacerbation of disease or worsening. However, to date, it has not been able to be measured, and cough monitoring with Hyfe allows you to monitor cough over time, see patterns, and use those patterns to optimize patient care in the future." #HyfeAI #ChronicCough #HyfeDTx #DigitalHealth #AIinHealthcare #DigitalTherapeutics #MedAI #CoughMonitoring #RemotePatientMonitoring #HealthInnovation #RespiratoryAwareness #CoughAwareness #CoughScience #PatientCentricCare hyfe.com Download the transcript here

What topic would you like us to cover next?Ever wondered what makes truly exceptional chocolate? The secret might be sitting right beneath its roots - volcanic soil.Tamsin Daniel, Head of Marketing at Firetree Chocolate, takes us on a fascinating journey through the world of premium chocolate production, revealing how cocoa grown in the nutrient-rich volcanic soils of remote islands creates distinctively complex flavour profiles that chocolate lovers are increasingly willing to pay premium prices for. What makes Firetree's approach particularly interesting is their commitment to the bean-to-bar process. Working directly with small-scale farmers in places like the Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, and the Philippines, they're creating chocolate with nuanced taste notes that challenge conventional chocolate making. Tamsin shares insights from her remarkable career working with iconic food brands including Newman's Own, Pataks spices, and Betty's Tea Rooms. Her candid "chickpea disaster" story from an early marketing trip to India with Meena Patak offers a humbling reminder of how even the smallest details can impact marketing success. The conversation explores broader food marketing trends, including the shift toward taste appreciation, ethical sourcing considerations, and how major retailers like Tesco are recognising consumer demand for more sophisticated offerings.Whether you're a chocolate enthusiast, food marketer, or business owner interested in premium product positioning, this episode delivers valuable insights into how authentic product differentiation combined with distinctive brand positioning creates lasting consumer appeal.  Is your marketing strategy ready for 2025? Tamsin is a multi-instrumentalist and composer with roots in the traditional dance tunes of the British Isles. Her debut solo album FREY (2022) established her as a rising star on the folk scene, with The Guardian praising her "beautiful, filmic compositions for accordion, harp, whistle and voice”. In this work Tamsin explores themes of limbo, pain, healing and acceptance, reflecting on the microcosm of her personal experience of chronic illness alongside wider themes of societal disconnection and environmental grief. Her forthcoming record The Meeting Tree celebrates connection, nature and the joy of sharing tunes with friends. Tamsin's critically-acclaimed collaboration with Egyptian oud player Tarek Elazhary explores the parallels and celebrates the idiosyncrasies of Egyptian Maqam music and English folk traditions. Their friendship and resulting duo album So Far We Have Come is a testament to the unifying power of music, and won them a place in The Guardian's Top Ten Folk Albums of 2023, as well as a nomination for Best Group at the Songlines Music Awards. A versatile composer-performer, Tamsin also contributes to chamber-folk quintet Hedera and festival-favourite Mediterranean fusion band Solana. As a Musician in Residence at UHBW NHS Trust, she channels her musical passion into healing and connection, writing new music on lever harp and playing for patients on wards including the ICU. This episode was recorded in Tamsin's studio in Bristol and it includes performances recorded especially for the podcast. Luke and Tamsin also discuss her work as a musician in residence and her cross-cultural musical collaborations. Today one in five adults infected with COVID-19 is still suffering its effects, months after their diagnosis. In fact, it's now understood that COVID-19 is much more complex than we first thought. Long Covid has more than 200 potential symptoms, spread across 10 different organ systems, all of which you can experience in different stages of the disease. For clinical nutritionist, Lee Holmes, usually the picture of perfect health, a bout of Covid left her struggling to get out of bed, barely able to muster enough energy to seek help for herself. In this episode of the Women Living Well After 50 Podcast, my guest, Lee Holmes, describes her experience with long COVID.We discussed:* What the definition of long COVID is?* Lee's new book Nature's Way to Healing - A Long Covid Guide what prompted her to write the book and what can readers expect?* Lee's approach to managing long COVD* Some of the symptoms in Long COVID are also experienced during peri menopause such as foggy brain, lethargy.  Could those going through peri menopause also adapt some of your holistic lifestyle practices?* Some of Lee's favourite recipes in the book and how they help* What being a Women Living Well Means to LeeNature's Way to Healing can be purchased on Amazon, Booktopia and at www.superchargedfood.comWhat this book does:- Shorten the duration of Long Covid and recover faster- Ease brain fog, fatigue, and other debilitating symptoms- Lower inflammation and regulate immune function- Nurture your mind-body connection for optimal healingMeet Lee HolmesMeet Lee Holmes, the force behind all things supercharged. She's a qualified clinical nutritionist, yoga and meditation teacher, wholefoods chef and author of the bestselling Supercharged Food series. Her ten books include Eat Yourself Beautiful, Heal Your Gut, the page-turner Supercharge Your Life and now Nature's Way to Healing. As a little girl, Lee remembers foraging the British hedgerows with her mum and two sisters, looking for tasty treats to add to the family's diet. She would also spend weekends and holidays fruit-picking on the local Kent farms to help supplement the family's income and so, she says, she had a humble and rural upbringing until the age of six when her single mother decided to move the family to Australia.Wanting to travel as a young woman, Lee left school, went to hospitality and cooking school to become a chef and then became a flight attendant. She spent some time back in the UK teaching English as a foreign language, before working full time in teaching. Then one morning, she woke up and decided she'd like a change of career and fancied working in the music business. For most people this would probably remain a pipedream, but this is Lee Holmes, businesswoman, successful author and now a qualified clinical nutritionist. And as someone who believes ‘if she can think it, she can do it', Lee found herself running the children's music department at the ABC. She became an even busier, driven career woman and single mum to daughter, Tamsin, now 28.When Lee became unwell at 44, with what was eventually diagnosed as an autoimmune disease, she gave up her job in the music industry and decided to pursue her other dream of becoming an advocate for natural health and a wholefoods lifestyle. These days, when she's not whipping up gut-friendly concoctions in her kitchen, you'll find Lee running her successful online health programs, ‘Heal Your Gut' and ‘Fast Your Way to Wellness'.She's a regular columnist for Wellbeing and Eat Well magazines, and a regular on ABC Radio in Australia. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Epistemic states as a potential benign prior, published by Tamsin Leake on August 31, 2024 on The AI Alignment Forum. Malignancy in the prior seems like a strong crux of the goal-design part of alignment to me. Whether your prior is going to be used to model: processes in the multiverse containing a specific "beacon" bitstring, processes in the multiverse containing the AI, processes which would output all of my blog, so I can make it output more for me, processes which match an AI chatbot's hypotheses about what it's talking with, then you have to sample hypotheses from somewhere; and typically, we want to use either solomonoff induction or time-penalized versions of it such as levin search (penalized by log of runtime) or what QACI uses (penalized by runtime, but with quantum computation available in some cases), or the implicit prior of neural networks (large sequences of multiplying by a matrix, adding a vector, and ReLU, often with a penalty related to how many non-zero weights are used). And the solomonoff prior is famously malign. (Alternatively, you could have knightian uncertainty about parts of your prior that aren't nailed down enough, and then do maximin over your knightian uncertainty (like in infra-bayesianism), but then you're not guaranteed that your AI gets anywhere at all; its knightian uncertainty might remain so immense that the AI keeps picking the null action all the time because some of its knightian hypotheses still say that anything else is a bad idea. Note: I might be greatly misunderstanding knightian uncertainty!) (It does seem plausible that doing geometric expectation over hypotheses in the prior helps "smooth things over" in some way, but I don't think this particularly removes the weight of malign hypotheses in the prior? It just allocates their steering power in a different way, which might make things less bad, but it sounds difficult to quantify.) It does feel to me like we do want a prior for the AI to do expected value calculations over, either for prediction or for utility maximization (or quantilization or whatever). One helpful aspect of prior-distribution-design is that, in many cases, I don't think the prior needs to contain the true hypothesis. For example, if the problem that we're using a prior for is to model processes which match an AI chatbot's hypotheses about what it's talking with then we don't need the AI's prior to contain a process which behaves just like the human user it's interacting with; rather, we just need the AI's prior to contain a hypothesis which: is accurate enough to match observations. is accurate enough to capture the fact that the user (if we pick a good user) implements the kind of decision theory that lets us rely on them pointing back to the actual real physical user when they get empowered - i.e. in CEV(user-hypothesis), user-hypothesis builds and then runs CEV(physical-user), because that's what the user would do in such a situation. Let's call this second criterion "cooperating back to the real user". So we need a prior which: Has at least some mass on hypotheses which correspond to observations cooperate back to the real user and can eventually be found by the AI, given enough evidence (enough chatting with the user) Call this the "aligned hypothesis". Before it narrows down hypothesis space to mostly just aligned hypotheses, doesn't give enough weight to demonic hypothesis which output whichever predictions cause the AI to brainhack its physical user, or escape using rowhammer-type hardware vulnerabilities, or other failures like that. Formalizing the chatbot model First, I'll formalize this chatbot model. Let's say we have a magical inner-aligned "soft" math-oracle: Which, given a "scoring" mathematical function from a non-empty set a to real numbers (not necessarily one that is tractably ...
