On this week's show we asked three different AI LLMs “What is the best home theater projector for less than $5000?”. And we sort of got an answer.  We also read your emails and look at the week's news. News: Streamers doing a better job of winning back departed viewers Fox execs give new details regarding forthcoming streamer SiriusXM Slashes Jobs Again as Satellite Focus Sharpens Amid Subscriber Woes Other: NAB Petitions FCC to Shut Down ATSC 1.0 - The End of OTA TV? JMGO JMGO N1S Ultimate Can AI Help Pick Your Next Projector? We asked three different AI LLMs “What is the best home theater projector for less than $5000?”. And we sort of got an answer.  Chat GPT When looking for the best home theater projector under $5,000, several factors come into play, such as picture quality, brightness, resolution, and features like smart capabilities. As of my last knowledge update in October 2023, here are some of the top options within this budget: Epson Home Cinema 5050UB (MSRP $3000 Direct from Epson) Resolution: 4K PRO-UHD (upscaled) Brightness: 2,600 lumens Contrast Ratio: 1,000,000:1 Features: HDR support, motorized lens settings, and a wide color gamut. It provides exceptional picture quality, especially for films in dark rooms. Google Gemini It's impossible to definitively say which is the "best" projector for you without knowing your specific needs and preferences. However, I can offer some great options in the $5,000 range. To help me recommend the perfect projector for you, tell me: What size is your screen?  How far away will you be sitting from the screen? What resolution do you prefer (1080p, 4K)? Do you need 3D capability? What type of content will you be watching most often (movies, gaming, sports)? Do you have any specific features you are looking for (HDR, high refresh rate)? Once I have this information, I can give you a more personalized recommendation.  In the meantime, here are some popular projectors in the $5,000 range: For 4K and high brightness: Sony VPL-VW270ES (this is a discontinued model): Offers excellent image quality, high brightness, and HDR capabilities.  JVC DLA-N5 ($6500!): Known for its black levels and contrast ratio, perfect for dark rooms. For budget-friendly 4K: Epson Home Cinema 5050UB (MSRP $3000 Direct from Epson):  A great option for those looking for a solid 4K projector at a lower price point. For bright rooms: BenQ TK850 (this is a discontinued model):  A powerful projector with high brightness and DLP technology, ideal for rooms with ambient light.  I look forward to helping you find the perfect projector for your home theater!  For fun I later updated my query with the following. What is the best home theater projector for less than $5000? More parameters to consider: 100” Screen size Seating will be 15 feet away I need 4K with HDR. I do not need 3D Capability I watch an even mix of TV, Movies, and Sports Gemini responded with a list of four projectors and a summary. The following is the summary: Based on your requirements, the BenQ TK850 or the Optoma UHD380X (Also unavailable) are excellent options. They offer a balance of 4K resolution, HDR support, and good brightness levels within your budget. It's recommended to read reviews and compare them to see which aligns better with your specific needs. Good luck with your projector hunt! Grok 3 Based on the available information and critical evaluation of projector options, the Epson Home Cinema LS11000 ($4000 from Projector People) stands out as the best home theater projector under $5,000.  Here's why: This projector offers a compelling combination of high-end performance and features, making it ideal for creating a cinematic experience at home. It uses a laser light source, which provides consistent brightness (rated at 2,500 lumens) and a long lifespan of up to 20,000 hours, eliminating the need for frequent lamp replacements. Its 4K resolution is achieved through pixel-shifting technology, delivering sharp, detailed images that rival more expensive native 4K projectors. The LS11000 also excels in color accuracy, with excellent out-of-the-box performance, and supports HDR10, HLG, and HDR10+ for vibrant, dynamic visuals. Its high contrast ratio (up to 1,200,000:1) ensures deep blacks and excellent shadow detail, crucial for movie watching in dark environments. Additionally, the LS11000 is versatile, with features like motorized lens shift, zoom, and focus, making it easy to set up in various room configurations. It performs well in both dark home theaters and rooms with moderate ambient light, thanks to its brightness. While it lacks 3D support and built-in smart features like Wi-Fi or streaming apps, these are minor trade-offs for its price point, as you can easily add a streaming device. Compared to alternatives like the LG GRU510N, which offers higher brightness (5,000 lumens) but lower contrast and less refined color accuracy, or the Epson Home Cinema 5050UB, which is dimmer and uses a lamp instead of a laser, the LS11000 strikes the best balance of performance, value, and longevity. High-end native 4K projectors from brands like Sony or JVC, while excellent, exceed the $5,000 budget, making the LS11000 a top choice for enthusiasts seeking premium quality without breaking the bank. Keep in mind that to achieve the best results, you'll need a quality projector screen and a sound system, as the LS11000 lacks robust built-in speakers. Also, consider your room's lighting conditions—while it handles some ambient light, it performs best in a controlled, darker environment. Our Takeaway This was a fun exercise which had mixed results. In the end you have to do the work yourself and like Google Gemini says find one that fits your specific needs and preferences. In other words, AI is not taking over the world any time soon.

AI Wars Echoes of Past Tech Battles in the Race for Dominance

The AI Battle Mirrors Past Format Wars “History never repeats itself, but it does often rhyme.” — Mark Twain [TLDR: This week's Thursday Thought explores the ongoing battle for AI dominance among tech giants like OpenAI, Anthropic, X, Google, and Microsoft, drawing parallels to historic format wars that have shaped various industries. From the iconic VHS vs. Betamax struggle to the intense competition between gaming consoles like PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo, and the enduring rivalry between iPhone and Android, these conflicts reveal a recurring pattern. As AI companies follow similar paths, it's clear that, while technology evolves, the strategic dynamics remain strikingly similar.] The current battle for dominance between tech giants like OpenAI, Google, Anthropic and Microsoft is not just a race to the top — it's a modern-day format war. By examining the patterns of previous technology battles, we can gain insight into how this AI competition is likely to play out. Three key patterns emerge from past format battles that are now being mirrored in the AI space: The Power of Network Effects: Just like previous format wars, the AI battle will be heavily influenced by network effects. (A network effect occurs when a product or service becomes more valuable as more people use it, creating a positive feedback loop that can lead to rapid growth and market dominance.) The Underdog Advantage: History has shown that the winner is often not the one everyone expects — not the biggest company or even the best product. Early market leaders may fall behind as more adaptable or better-networked competitors take the lead. Ecosystem Building is Key: The final battleground is not just the technology itself, but the entire ecosystem built around it. Companies that successfully create a thriving ecosystem of developers, partners, and content will probably emerge as the ultimate winners. To understand these dynamics better, let's revisit three strategic battles that shaped the technology landscape: the VCR format war, the console wars, and the smartphone OS wars. Each of these battles offers valuable lessons for understanding the current AI competition. The VCR War: A Template for Format Battles (The also-rans in the VCR war (that I know of) included Philips and Grundig's Video 2000 (V2000), and RCA's Capacitance Electronic Disc (CED). The videotape format war between VHS and Betamax in the late 20th century stands as one of the most emblematic battles over technological dominance. Introduced in the mid-1970s, Sony's Betamax initially captivated the market with its superior video quality and compact design. However, JVC's VHS, which entered the market shortly after, quickly emerged as a formidable competitor by addressing consumer needs more effectively with longer recording times — up to two hours initially, which was soon extended to four, six, and even eight hours as the technology developed. The success of VHS was not solely because of its technical merits. JVC employed a strategic approach by licensing its VHS technology to an array of manufacturers, including heavyweights like Panasonic, Sharp, and RCA. This move flooded the market with VHS players, making the format more accessible to the average consumer. To further tip the scale in their favour, during the mid-1970s JVC established VCR supply relationships with leading national consumer electronics companies in Europe and the United States. In supplying Thomson, Thorn, and Telefunken (all independent companies at that time) as well as U.S. partners, JVC was able to gain the cash and the diversity of market experience that ultimately enabled it to outpace Philips and Sony. Philips developed videotape competencies in parallel with JVC, but it failed to build a worldwide network of OEM relationships that would have allowed it to accelerate the refinement of its videotape competence through the sale of core products. According to , by the...

In our glorious age of streaming services, we never need to worry about recording anything ourselves - we just click “Continue Watching” and chill. But in the sad, not-too-distant past, you couldn't always just open up Netflix and binge all nine seasons of Suits whenever you felt like it. Instead, if you missed your favorite soap, tough noogies. That is, that was the way things were until the magical VCR entered the American household. Out of the house? No problem! Just pop in a cassette and you're golden. The only problem was that two companies wanted the glory of becoming the standard format on which people would record their shows - and neither was going down without a fight. Daniel teaches Rob and Ray about the infamous format war between Sony's Betamax systems and tapes, and JVC's competitor, the VHS; how the history of recorded and broadcast video on recorded tape media took some strange twist and turns involving World War II and Bing Crosby; Rob's and Ray's favorite streaming services; the legal challenges Sony faced from studios terrified that home recording would be the death knell of movie distribution; and why home recorded media is no longer something consumers really seem to want or even have access to.If you like what we're doing, please support us on Patreon, or you can subscribe to our bonus content on Apple Podcasts. For more than 60 years, the Jesuit Volunteer Corps (JVC) has been a pioneer in the service landscape. With over 100 volunteers each year and over 12,000 alumni, they are one of the largest lay, Catholic, full-time volunteer programs in the world. JVC gives young adults the opportunity to engage in service and solidarity with local communities, rooted in the values of spirituality, simple living, community and social justice. Host Mike Jordan Laskey recently spoke with JVC's president, Tom Chabolla, who has served in the role since 2018. Tom has more than 30 years working in faith-based and community-development organizations and he brings a wealth of expertise to the role. Mike asked Tom about what inspires him in his work, plus how he and his team navigated the pandemic. They also talked about the challenges JVC and other similar organizations are facing today and how they're responding. This conversation is the second part of a two-week series on full-time volunteer programs in the Ignatian family. Be sure to listen to last week's conversation between my colleague Eric Clayton and Mary McGinnity, president and CEO of the Ignatian Volunteer Corps, which typically works with volunteers quite a bit older than JVs, folks who have spent decades in career and family life. TODAY'S MAIN TOPIC: Reverse sear, what is it, why bother? Reverse sear is a cooking technique that has gained popularity among home cooks and professional chefs alike. Unlike the traditional searing method, where the meat is seared first and then finished in the oven, the reverse sear takes a different approach. It involves slow cooking the meat at a low temperature in the oven until it reaches the desired internal temperature, and then searing it on high heat to create a beautifully caramelized crust. This method allows for even cooking throughout the meat, resulting in a perfectly cooked and tender texture. Moreover, reverse searing also provides more control over the doneness of the meat, making it an ideal technique for thicker cuts such as steaks and roasts. The reverse sear technique has revolutionized the way we cook meat, delivering consistent results and ensuring a memorable dining experience for all. I plan on using this method to cook our Christmas dinner, a reverse-seared tri-tip roast with whipped tallow and chive potatoes, peas, and Bordelaise sauce. Dessert will be Burnt Basque Cheesecake. HOMESTEAD TSUNAMI: Planting an orchard in my mind is one of the most valuable and beneficial investments one can make on the homestead. Fed officials know that and it is certainly one of the reasons they don't want to raise rates any higher and hope to bring them down as soon as possible. Over a decade of easy money policies incentivized borrowing to “stimulate” the economy. As a result, governments, individuals, and corporations all borrowed to the hilt. That was all well and good when interest rates were hovering around zero, but when central banks had to hike rates to battle the inevitable price inflation, it pulled the rug out from under the borrow-and-spend economy. Governments around the world are feeling the squeeze as they try to deal with trillions in debt in a rising interest rate environment. PRODUCT RECOMMENDATION: Mid 70's stereo equipment, brands like Sansui, Pioneer, Marantz, Kenwood, JVC, Sherwood, Sony. News: Hisense upstages TCL by adding a gigantic 100-inch mini-LED TV 2023 CEDIA Expo Best of Show Winners Last week the Custom Electronic Design And Installation Association better known as CEDIA had their annual show in Denver CO. On today's show we will discuss some of the awards that were given out. We also have a bonus section where DJ Briggs of BightSideHomeTheater.com gives us his list of five things he thought were super cool. Check out his podcast to find out why he felt that way.  Residential Systems entries were judged through the lens of the residential integrator, while TWICE based theirs on a consumer electronics retail view and What Hi-Fi? from the home entertainment enthusiast perspective. I am always asking myself what we can do as a dental practice to level up. And in 2019, I got curious about using virtual consults to save time and see more patients. But the applications on the market at the time had issues. They were difficult to use, and few were secure and HIPAA-compliant. On this episode of Dentist Brian Candy, I describe how I worked with a talented programmer to fill that gap in the market and develop the custom Jet Virtual Consults app for oral and maxillofacial surgeons. I explain why we made the decision to skip beta testing of Jet Virtual Consults and go straight into production, discussing how I used the app during COVID to work through my long waiting list of public aid patients. Listen in to understand how we've improved the app since its launch in 2020 and find out what Jet Virtual Consults can do for you and your dental practice!
