Legendary American scholar and critic Tom Gunning has changed the way we think about film history and the future of the medium, profoundly influencing generations of academics, artists, and cinephiles. On Sunday, April 27, Devika Girish and Clinton Krute hosted a live conversation with Gunning and curator David Schwartz at the Museum of the Moving Image, following a screening of Hal Hartley's Flirt (1995), an experimental narrative of love and loss set in three cities—New York, Berlin, and Tokyo. The event was part of a multiday series of screenings and discussions organized by Schwartz, taking place at venues including MoMI, Anthology Film Archives, and Light Industry. This special weekend marked the publication of a new collection of Gunning's writing, entitled The Attractions of the Moving Image: Essays on History, Theory, and the Avant-Garde. The conversation covered a wide range of topics, from Gunning's seminal essay “The Cinema of Attractions” (1986) to his teacher-student relationship with Hartley to some contemporary films that he's (perhaps surprisingly) enjoyed.

Send us a textFrom accidentally stealing the spotlight on David Letterman's show as a teenager to voicing beloved animated characters for two decades, James Urbaniak's acting journey reads like a masterclass in versatility and perseverance. In this wide-ranging conversation, Urbaniak reveals the unexpected path that took him from New Jersey community theater to New York's experimental off-off-Broadway scene in the late 1980s. With remarkable candor, he shares how challenging theatrical experiences—like performing a 75-minute solo monologue in "Tom Paine"—helped develop his craft before independent filmmaker Hal Hartley introduced him to the different demands of screen acting.Fans of Adult Swim's cult classic "The Venture Bros." will delight in Urbaniak's behind-the-scenes stories from his 20-year tenure voicing Dr. Rusty Venture and other characters. He recounts the surreal experience of having a makeup artist on the set of an HBO film tell him she was more excited to meet the voice of Dr. Venture than Al Pacino himself—a testament to the profound connection voice actors can forge with audiences.Urbaniak's philosophy of acting—describing himself as "a skeptic who likes to be surprised"—offers valuable insight into navigating the entertainment industry's inherent uncertainty. Whether discussing his brief but memorable appearance in Christopher Nolan's "Oppenheimer," his experience playing Robert Crumb in "American Splendor," or his current work on Apple TV+'s "Palm Royale," Urbaniak demonstrates why character actors are often the secret ingredient that elevates productions across all media. For aspiring actors, film buffs, animation fans, or anyone fascinated by the creative process, this conversation provides a rare glimpse into the life of a working actor who has successfully built a diverse career by embracing opportunities across multiple entertainment platforms.Support the show

Two independent American crime films featuring guns, gangsters, torture, redemption, stylized artificial dialogue, quirky comedy, a cool soundtrack, a main character who dies and is resurrected and a criminal's kept woman with an Anna Karina haircut made their debut at the southern tip of France. One of them went on to conquer the world and become one of the most beloved and imitated films of the ensuing 30 years. The other faded into obscurity and is barely brought up three decades later. The films are Quentin Tarantino's Pulp Fiction and Hal Hartley's Amateur, and their divergent paths clearly shifted the cultural space of American independent cinema moving forward. We welcome back Pinnland Empire guru Marcus Pinn (like us, a teenage budding cinephile in the mid-90's) to talk about these two films, how they were shaped by the climate of late 80's/early 90's indie cinema, their impact and their legacy. Despite Hartley's deep meaningful contemplations proving no match for Tarantino's sheer exuberance, these are two films that were meaningful to all three of us, so we also get pretty heavily into some formative personal history and lament the slow death of a truly specific kind of American movie. The film, written and directed by one of the great undersung auteurs of American indie cinema during its heyday, blends a sense of sweeping literary scope with the understatedness of an indie comedy to tell a story about creativity, imperfect people, and the commercial forces that antagonize true outsider artistry. Henry Fool would become the first in a trilogy of films by Hartley, continuing with the 2006 riff on espionage thrillers, 'Fay Grim' and concluding in 2014 with the final installment 'Ned Rifle'.We begin with an examination of Hal Hartley, the unique alchemy of his work, and his debt to the films and filmmakers of the French New Wave. Then, we discuss 'Henry Fool' as a singular work of daring, frequently flying in the face of good taste, probing its audience's sense of morality, and asking us to find connection with a host of broken individuals who don't act in accordance with our own judgements. Finally, we look into the future and discuss Hartley's most recent (successful) attempts to get a new film off the ground and how a 2020's audience might receive a filmmaker who has always bucked commercial trends and swings for populist appeal.Follow David Weigel on Twitter.Subscribe to Semafor Newsletters....Our theme song is "Mirror" by Chris Fish

In an increasingly competitive and congested distribution marketplace, better and more informed decision making upstream is increasingly essential. However, formulaic and algorithmically influenced content continues to enter the system, often leaving audiences cold. Is there a better way? How can we support intuitive creativity with robust data analytics, audience insights and distribution intelligence? What are the tools, resources and information that can underpin more effective commissioning or investment decisions? Where are the information blindspots and how can filmmakers formulate a more robust investment opportunity? How can we create more inclusiveness in the greenlight process? These are some of the questions explored with 3 leaders in their field across film, data and technology featuring legendary producer Ted Hope, Co Founder and Co-CEO of Film Chain, Irina Albita and Anjali Midha, Founder and CEO of Diesel Labs.  Ted Hope has been a producer on over 70 films, studio executive on over 60, CEO of a start-up streamer, co-head of 3 production companies, executive director of a film society & festival, a Professor Of Practice at 2 universities, and founder of a post-production facility, 2 websites, 2 think tanks, & an app. Ted launched Amazon's foray into feature film production, leading them to 19 Oscar nominations and 5 wins. As a producer, his films have received 25 Oscar nominations, with 6 wins. Ted's memoir and newsletter Hope For Film, are both must reads. The 4K restoration and re-release of the comedy “Party Girl” brings Parker Posey to Back To One. Shortly after the success of that movie in 1995, she went on to star in so many independent films, like “The Daytrippers,” “Clockwatchers,” “The House of Yes” (not to mention a bunch of Hal Hartley and Christopher Guest classics), that she was dubbed “Queen of the Indies.” On this episode, she explains why that moniker was oddly detrimental to her career. She talks about recent experiences on the sets of “Beau Is Afraid” and “The Staircase;” the connection between actors and athletes; why, for her, it all starts with “shoes and hair;” and much more! With Geoff out after a bizarre curling incident (long story), Keith flies solo this week as he welcomes Paul Heck into Thunderlove Studio for a chat. Paul Heck created the AIDS Music Project to raise awareness about HIV/AIDS and normalize discussing safe sex. In this endeavor, Heck pursued the idea of an AIDS-benefit alternative rock compilation. He partnered with fellow Brown alumni Chris Mundy (a Rolling Stone senior writer) and Jessica Kowal (a freelance writer for Newsday) to produce the album No Alternative, the third album in the Red Hot Organization's (RHO) AIDS Benefit Music series. No Alternative, released on Arista Records in October 1993. The album received an A+ review in Entertainment Weekly and was described by Rolling Stone as "a jaw-dropping compilation of musical gems." A No Alternative MTV special featured a mix of live performances by Smashing Pumpkins and Goo Goo Dolls, music videos, short films by directors Hal Hartley, Tamra Davis, Michael Stipe, Jim McKay, and Matt Mahurin. No Alternative raised over $1.5 million, and the proceeds were donated to AIDS relief organizations across the US. Following No Alternative's commercial and critical success, Heck has produced other HIV/AIDS awareness-raising albums and a series of concerts at the Brooklyn Academy of Music. Heck's subsequent productions include: Red Hot + Bothered Offbeat Red Hot + RIO Red Hot + Rhapsody Red Hot + Indigo Red Hot + RIOT Red Hot + RIO2 Red Hot + FELA Master Mix: Red Hot + Arthur Russell In 2004, Heck was honored by Brown University as the recipient of the John Hope Award for Career Public Service. Paul co-produced Dark Was The Night (2009), an AIDS benefit album that raised over $1 million and featured artists like The National, Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings, My Morning Jacket, and Jose Gonzalez. In 2013 Heck produced a 20th Anniversary reissue of No Alternative on vinyl (Sony Legacy) for Record Store Day. In 2019 Heck produced Love is the Drug, a campaign in N. Carolina featuring live music pop-up events with video storytelling focused on raising awareness around Harm Reduction and Opioid Addiction.  In 2020 Heck invited another Brown alum, fine artist Keith Mayerson, to create a portrait of Dr. Anthony Fauci as a part of a limited art edition fundraiser for Treatment Action Group (TAG). Heck worked as an A&R for Arista Records and Warner Bros. Records in the mid-1990s. Adria Tennor talks her new movie "One Moment", working on various television shows throughout her career, and the time she auditioned to be a 12 year old boy! About Adria: Adria Tennor earned her BFA in stage directing and acting at New York University and Playwrights Horizons Theater School. She began her career as an actress, and her first professional job was playing a twelve-year old boy looking at porn in Tompkins Square park in Hal Hartley's Amateur, which premiered in the Directors' Fortnight at Cannes. She works regularly in television and film and is most known for her recurring roles on Mad Men and Mad Dogs as well as in the Academy Award winning film, The Artist. She also stars opposite the late, great Danny Aiello in his final, soon-to-be-released feature, One Moment, a heartbreaking comedy about a single mother trying to harness her already hectic life while her aging father slips into dementia.  Dissatisfied with the amount of work available to women in entertainment, Tennor began writing her own material, performing stand up early in her career, then spinning her material into a rave-reviewed one-woman show, StripSearch, about finding love and happiness with the help of a 12-foot pole. Another monologue she wrote and performed, Pie in the Sky, was published in the anthology about lust gone wrong – Worst Laid Plans: When Bad Sex Happens to Good People alongside works by Whitney Cummings, Mary Lynn Rajskub, Allison Brie and Laraine Newman. Tennor made her producing debut on horror spoof, Smothered, shot on location in Baton Rouge. Her directorial debut, a self-penned childhood drama, Cracked, stars Marguerite Moreau, and garnered awards and laurels around the country. Her second film, Pie, starring fellow Mad Men alum Jessica Paré, was a favorite on the festival circuit in 2018, also garnering awards and laurels internationally.  Adria won the CineStory fellowship for her first feature script Never Been Born. While attending the retreat, she met accomplished YA novelist and Emily Dickinson First Book Award recipient Kristen Tracy, and the two co-conspired to conceive, collaborate and produce the short-format series FETISH which will launch in early September 2020. Adria is also in the process of penning a sequel solo show and series to StripSearch called STRIPPED about trudging through the ugly mire of divorce also with the help of a twelve foot pole. Her ambition is to create and tell more stories for and about women and to foster opportunities for a diverse point of view in theater, film and television. This week Caroline pushes Paul to explore Hal Hartley and the original indie queen herself Adrienne Shelly. And they (we) both loved it. Highly recommend the 2 films we discuss as a double feature: The Unbelievable Truth (1989) and Trust (1990) from Hartley's Long Island Triology. We also discuss the documentary Adrienne (2021) about the amazing life and tragic death of Hartley's star.

Maria Coughlin is having a bad day... Or at least she thought she was that is until she met Matthew: Matthew Slaughter. The cherry atop the Hot Donovan Summer sundae, this week we are talking about Trust! Written & directed by Hal Hartley, this indie darling from 1990 has been a long time favorite for us each, but this was the first time watching together. Along the way we bemoan fight scenes in the digital age, ponder what is possible in independent film currently and Keith drones on about some German. +++++ Intro: by Professor Ping available on Spotify and Bandcamp Outro: Hub Moore & The Great Outdoors performing Walk Away This episode includes files from the Freesound.org users listed below.
