It'll be a lot easier for everyone if you just listen to our episode on UNSANE, Soderbergh's 2018 shot-on-iPhone experiment that's otherwise a pretty solid thriller! Writer Esmé Holden returns to the show after far too long to talk smartphone aesthetics, involuntary holds, whether all doctors are cops or just most of them, the intersections of mental illness and misogyny and transphobia, and a very special man by the name of Gavin de Becker. Wonderful guest, wonderful conversation, check it out! Heads up: there's a very brief bit of rough audio right when our guest starts speaking, but it clears up quickly. Look, either you know what this is or you won't believe us. In 2017, Steven Soderbergh and writer Ed Solomon made a murder mystery show that was an app on your phone. You used your phone to decide which scenes to watch next to find out who killed Sharon Stone. This is real. Then they re-edited it as a miniseries for HBO, and now you can't watch the app version literally anywhere. The whole thing is nuts, and thank G-d we have our friend Comrade Yui to help us navigate through it (app joke). Join us for a typically wide-ranging conversation about interactivity, the artist as fascist (complimentary?), video game theory, and biodigital jazz, man. Hey more like Steven Flappybird! Because he deleted the app! Well, someone did. Cannes is almost over, which means it is time to make our Palme d'Or predictions.In this episode, we break down the Cannes competition, make our picks for who we think could win the Palme d'Or, and talk through which films might carry momentum into the Oscar race. We get into the strange energy of this year's festival, the movies that seem built for jury attention, the ones that could break out later, and whether Cannes still feels like the launchpad it used to be.Along the way, we also talk John Travolta's honorary Palme d'Or, Paul Schrader's Cannes grumpiness, Jacob Elordi's jury absence, and the general chaos of trying to read festival buzz from afar. The episode sets up the Palme prediction segment directly in the intro, so this title and thumbnail are aligned with what the show actually promises.Chapters:0:00 Intro0:42 John Travolta's honorary Palme d'Or & Paul Schrader4:24 Setting the stage: Cannes wraps up5:06 Top storylines & the Screen jury grid (Fatherland, Minotaur)9:43 Standing ovations & the clapping arms race12:08 Polarizing films & Fjord (Cristian Mungiu)14:01 Where's Hollywood?
The Winds of Winter is still a distant dream for incarcerated fantasy fans, but our episode on Soderbergh's 2017 NASCAR caper LOGAN LUCKY is coming to you on schedule. We brought back our friend, and rebel among San Diego film critics, Glenn Heath Jr. to discuss how Ocean's 7-Eleven combines Soderbergh's impatience with conventional film production, his visions of an incongruous South, and his preternatural flair for heist movies. It might be a live-action cartoon or it might be serious American Regionalism. We lay it all out for you in what Sebastian Stan has called "the dirtiest air of all." Can you feel it? Summer movie season is rumbling down the tracks. And this week BFG Podcast host Neal Pollack puts his ear to the ground for the last major releases before the real blockbusters start.First up is Michael, the bizarrely popular Michael Jackson biopic that has the world forgetting how weird and sinister late-era Michael Jackson really was. This is a hero's origin story, from the beginnings of the Jackson 5 up until the near-tragedy of the "Victory" tour. Contributor Gillian Gaar joins Neal in breaking down why she thinks this movie is a flat highlight reel that doesn't really work, and compares it to other recent popular music biopics like Bohemian Rhapsody and Back in Black. Neal agrees with her mostly but really liked Colman Domingo as Michael's Machiavellian father, and has to admit the music scenes are pretty good.Stephen Garrett makes his regular stop to talk about The Devil Wears Prada 2, the sequel to a popular movie from the fashion industry from 20 years ago. Our critics agree that this sequel seems flat and unnecessary and they get very bitchy talking about music and fashion, which is appropriate. Neal did like Justin Theroux as a Jeff Bezos-style billionaire magnate weirdo, and Emily Blunt is also pretty funny in the sequel. But most of the goings-on are pretty annoying.Neal and Stephen clash on The Christophers, a Steven Soderbergh indie joint about the London art world. Soderbergh, who is 63, claimed to have retired 13 years ago, Ian McKellen is 87 at the end of this month and is not retiring any time soon. They agree that McKellen is wonderful as the lead, a dying 80-something former "Bad Boy" painter, and Neal tries unsuccessfully to persuade Stephen that Michaela Cole is NOT a film actress. They agree to disagree, as they always do.
It's time for another Soderbergh style heist, this time in the art world! We're joined by Blueprint Screenwriting group founder Timothy Michael Cooper who has a few succinct words about Ed Solomon's new screenplay for "The Christophers" If you're enjoying the show, consider buying us a coffee, sending us an email or hitting us up on Letterboxd, Twitter(X), BlueSky or Instagram!You can catch our episodes early and ad free over on Nebula! Adam is joined by critic Chris Klimek to discuss The Christophers, the latest film from Steven Soderbergh. Starring Ian McKellen and Michaela Coel, the film centers on the uneasy power dynamic between a once-celebrated artist and the forger drawn into his orbit. The conversation focuses on McKellen’s bracing late-career performance, Coel’s controlled counterpoint, and Soderbergh and screenwriter Ed Solomon’s refusal to resolve the film’s ideas into sentiment. Among the several filmmakers whose work demands to be seen, Steven Soderbergh—for many of us—ranks somewhere in the Top Ten. On this week's show, Dan Webster, Nathan Weinbender and Mary Pat Treuthart discuss Soderbergh's newest film, “The Christophers,” which stars the great stage actor Ian McKellen. They follow that with a look at the latest film by the Palestinian-American director Cherien Dabis titled “All That's Left of You.”

Με το Πάσχα πίσω μας, φτάνουμε πια στην παραδοσιακή αυτή στιγμή στο χρόνο όπου αρχίζουμε να κοιτάζουμε πολύ έντονα προς την εκτεταμένη θερινή περίοδο που έρχεται: Ξεκινώντας από τον Μάιο, και μέχρι τα τέλη Αυγούστου, οι αίθουσες γεμίζουν, και οι τηλεοπτικοί δέκτες έχουν εκπλήξεις να μας δώσουν.Το POP για τις Δύσκολες Ώρες ρίχνει μια ματιά στο επόμενο 4μηνο και ξεχωρίζει αυτά για τα οποία ανυπομονούμε περισσότερο. Η Οδύσσεια του Νόλαν είναι το λογικό μπλοκμπάστερ του καλοκαιριού (μας) αλλά θα είναι το μόνο; Τι συμβαίνει στα Backrooms και γιατί η Α24 ποντάρει σε έναν 19χρονο σκηνοθέτη; Τι μας εξιτάρει στο υπερηρωικό Lanters και τι στο υπερηρωικό Spider-Noir; Γιατί πιστεύουμε πως θα μας εντυπωσιάσει για μια ακόμη φορά ο Nicolas Cage;Πόσους ρόλους θα παίξει φέτος στην τηλεόραση η Tatiana Maslany (του Orphan Black); Πόσο τρόμο αντέχουμε, και γιατί μετράμε τις μέρες για το Teenage Sex & Death at Camp Miasma; Τι θα έχει σκαρώσει πάλι ο Nolan με την Οδύσσεια; Υπάρχει τηλεοπτικό περφόρμανς το ερχόμενο 4μηνο που θα μπορέσει να επισκιάσει τον Javier Bardem στο Cape Fear; Και, τέλος, γιατί μιλάει πάλι για τον Soderbergh ο Θοδωρής; Τι γουστόζικο μας έχει σκαρώσει πάλι ο ακούραστος σκηνοθέτης;
Born and raised in Princeton, New Jersery, Wilkes relocated to the West Coast with his family, where he would go on to earn a BA at UC Santa Cruz, before eventually deciding to study screenwriting at the American Film Institute (AFI). Having worked as a screnwriter on such cult classics as 1994's "Airheads" (Adam Sandler, Brendan Fraser, Steve Buscemi, Chris Farley, and Michael Richards) and "The Stoned Age" (Michael Kopelow, Bradford Tatum, and Clifton Collins Jr.), which was released this past Monday as an exclusive cult collectible Blu-Ray in celebration of 420, Wilkes officially made his semi-autobiographical coming of age tale "Glory Daze", starring a pre-Kevin Smith Ben Affleck, Sam Rockwell, and French Stewart, and has since paved way as a legend in an intense industry that is changing quicker than you, and I could ever fathom. While combining the existential elements of youth, relationships, career, and the brave balance of life, Wilkes may be your new favorite obsession when it comes to cult comedies, and subliminal stoner stories. On this episode of The Self Portrait Gospel Podcast, we sit down with the veteran screenwriter/director to discuss the old glory daze of long-lasting youth in the 1990s, films legends such as Spielberg, Fincher, and Soderbergh, the never-ending narrative of nostalgia, the impact of AI, and much more.
On this week's episode the gang tackles Sharon Waxman's piece on David Zaslav and asks if he's the problem with Hollywood … or its inevitable result? Then they review Steven Soderbergh and Ed Solomon's new film about authenticity in art, The Christophers. Soderbergh is on a pretty amazing run since the foundation of this podcast, and we will be here for everything he does … but is this one for completists only? (Spoiler: no.) Make sure to swing by Thursday for our bonus episode on the world of art. And if you enjoyed this episode, share it with a friend!
We're back in Vegas, baby! It's Donald Trump and AI vs The Danny Ocean gang… but this time, Casey Affleck has a GIGANTIC mustache. This week it's the finale (?) of the Soderbergh's Oceans trilogy, and we simply have to get revenge for Elliot Gould. It's not fair what Al Pacino did to him. I mean, they both shook Sinatra's hand, for god's sake. Next week, it's the one and only BONUS of our Oceans miniseries… the Soderbergh heist film sometimes known as OCEAN'S 7/11 – aka, LOGAN LUCKY (2017). "The Christophers" is a 2025 black comedy film directed by Steven Soderbergh and written by Ed Solomon. It stars Sir Ian McKellen, Michaela Coel, Jessica Gunning, and James Corden. The film premiered at the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival, where it received positive reviews from critics for Ed Solomon's screenplay and the performances of Sir Ian McKellen and Michaela Coel, mostly in a chamber piece under the direction of Soderbergh. McKellen and Cole were kind enough to spend some time talking with us about their work and experience making the film, which you can listen to below. We're back with another commentary track, this time for a movie by a director we almost covered: David Cronenberg. His 1988 identical twin gynecologist horror-tragedy DEAD RINGERS deals with all kinds of themes we love: the nature of the self, of experience, of the body, of morality. It's also got the guy from Soderbergh's KAFKA and the lady from TIGHTROPE and OBSESSION. Listen to this along with the film or just listen on its own - it works either way, in our opinion! "Dead Ringers" by Ron Rosenbaum & Susan Edmiston Thanks as always to Jetski for our theme music and Jeremy Allison for our artwork.

Wong and Mike dive into the psychological thriller Side Effects (2013), directed by Steven Soderbergh. What starts as a film about depression, medication and trust quickly unravels into something far more sinister. With sharp, clever twists and morally gray themes, they break down what makes this film so well written - from its grounded yet flawed characters, to Soderbergh's tight direction - and why you'll never look at a simple prescription the same way again.
May the pods be ever in your feed-ver. Or whatever! We're screwing with the chronology a little bit today because we decided Steven Soderbergh's second unit work on Gary Ross's 2012 YA adaptation THE HUNGER GAMES was worth doing on the main feed after all. And we were right! There's a ton to talk about, from the film's style and what it means to try to find Soderbergh in it to the whole series's depictions of class, political struggle, war, and propaganda, to the popularity of dystopian young adult fiction, to the effectiveness of "political" art like ANDOR and ONE BATTLE AFTER ANOTHER, to the surprisingly enduring legacy of Hunger Games imagery in real protest movements around the world, to how much this film (and later ones in the series especially) remind us of Gaza. TV time! Almost immediately after "retiring" from feature films, Steven Soderbergh directed ten episodes of THE KNICK, a period medical drama for Cinemax about the early days of modern surgery. Joining us to talk about nearly ten hours of television is comedian and host of the podcast This Is Your Afterlife, Dave Maher! We have a wide-ranging discussion covering everything from prestige television antiheroes to addiction to chronic illness to racial disparities in medical care to what Kimi would like to do with Dave if she ever gets him alone. It's a real fun extra-long episode, and still probably our lowest ep-length-to-subject-length ratio ever. Take off your white shoe and dig in! Shine up those rhinestones, everybody: it's the BEHIND THE CANDELABRA episode. We're talking Soderbergh's sort-of-final film before his sort-of-retirement, a 2013 Liberace biopic starring Michael Douglas and Matt Damon - and we're joined by writer and Liberace expert Eva Anderson! We talk Vegas, camp, Douglas's infamous throat cancer disclosure, plastic surgery, palimony, the closet, Eva's absolutely insane experiences touring Liberace's home and other associated places, and lots more. It's here, lawbreakers: our episode on Steven Soderbergh's 2012 runaway hit MAGIC MIKE. Is this a sobering look at economic precarity after the Great Recession? Or is it a movie about gyrating hunks? Here to help us answer that question is writer, adult content creator, and proprietor of Spectrum Boutique, Zoë Ligon! We talk transactional desire, hot bods, side hustles, Zoë's experience seeing Magic Mike Live in Vegas, and a lot more. Look: you're horny, let's do it - listen to the episode, that is! This is a preview of a premium episode from our Patreon feed, Paid Costly For Me! Head over to Patreon.com/PodCastyForMe to hear more for just $5 a month. Most movies weren't directed by Steven Soderbergh, but few were as notably not directed by Steven Soderbergh as this one: MONEYBALL, the true story of the 2002 Oakland Athletics' revolutionary sabermetrics-based hiring strategy, was 5 days from shooting when Sony pulled the plug on Soderbergh's version. After a rewrite by Aaron Sorkin and a few cast change-ups, a slicker, Fincher-lite version directed by Bennett Miller made it to theaters, and we're talking about the whole deal. This ep has it all, quite frankly: in-depth script revision analysis, baseball talk, sports politics, and a long conversation about how statistics and "disruption" inform the world. It turns out everything is Moneyball, maybe? Give this one a listen, folks. As always, thanks to Jetski for our theme music and to Jeremy Allison for our artwork.
Get your silly little trunks on, listener: we're headed to the octagon this week to talk HAYWIRE, Soderbergh's much-delayed 2011 (anti-?) spy thriller starring MMA fighter Gina Carano. And joining us is our friend, podcaster and musician Ryan Torgeson (@molecularlioneI)! We talk mid-2010s action cinema, mixed martial arts, Soderbergh's decision to alter Carano's voice in post, Carano's decision to blow her career up by being a hateful moron, special consultant and Duvdevan Unit war criminal Aaron Cohen, and more. Well we're ending a wild year of podcasting watching Michael Fassbender, Cate Blanchett and a starry ensemble spy about London in Soderbergh's and Koepp's best of 2025, and Andrew's fave chill thriller comedy of the year Black Bag. Throughout his storied career, the legendary Steven Soderbergh has directed a wide array of highly acclaimed films and/or hits (Out of Sight, Ocean's 11, Magic Mike, Black Bag, Logan Lucky, Contagion, Sex, Lies, & Videotape) and THIS is the film which earned him his only Oscar for Best Director in 2000. This was actually one of two films (the other being Erin Brockovich) which he was nominated for in 2000 which turned out to be a TRULY stellar year for him! It's a sprawling story about the American "War on Drugs" during the late '90's, focusing on several different characters on different sides of the law and various levels of the drug trade including two DEA agents (Don Cheadle, Luis Guzman), a judge who has just been appointed the National Drug Czar (Michael Douglas), the wife (Catherine Zeta-Jones) of a suspected drug dealer (Steven Bauer), that couple's conniving attorney (Dennis Quaid), a teenager (Erika Christiansen) who becomes addicted to crack, and one conflicted Mexican cop (Benicio Del Toro who won an Oscar for his performance). It's a complex story delving into a lot of moral grey areas and it's a testament to all of the talent involved (including Oscar-winning writer Stephen Gaghan) that this film was not only highly acclaimed but also a word-of-mouth blockbuster with audiences at the time of release. However twenty-five years later, it is not often mentioned by many as among Soderbergh's best....so how does this ambitious ensemble hold up? Let's find out if any one gets away clean.....Host: Geoff GershonEdited By Ella GershonProducer: Marlene GershonSend us a textSupport the showhttps://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/
Open your notebooks and fill up your glasses of water, folks: today we're looking at Steven Soderbergh's two documentaries on Spalding Gray. And Ian's pissed off! We're joined once more by our friend, writer and critic Rob Rubsam, to talk 1996's GRAY'S ANATOMY, a sort of longform music video for Gray's "monolog" of the same name, and Soderbergh's 2010 posthumous "autobiography" of Gray, AND EVERYTHING IS GOING FINE. How does a figure like Gray emerge and rise to fame? Where does we place him in the long tradition of neurotic white guys who make everything about themselves? Is Jake one of those? Hey that's just a joke but maybe they could have used it on the posters for THE INFORMANT!, Steven Soderbergh's 2009 corporate espionage caper about the lysine price-fixing scandal and one of the weirdest guys there has ever been. We dive into reports that Mel Gibson's Passion of the Christ follow-up is moving ahead in Rome with a completely new cast, unpacking why a clean slate might be the boldest—and riskiest—choice. From the challenge of recasting Jesus to the tightrope between artistry and controversy, we explore what it would take for a sacred story to feel fresh without losing its gravity. We also tackle the listener prompt head-on: who would you choose for Jesus, Mary Magdalene, and the apostles, and why?Then the mood flips from sacred to slick as George Clooney hints that Oceans 14 is real, budgeted, and awaiting schedules. We celebrate the promised return of Roberts, Pitt, Damon, and Cheadle while asking the bigger question: how do you revive a beloved heist franchise without repeating old tricks? From modern marks like crypto fraud and art laundering to the Soderbergh style that made the films swing, we chart the path to a caper that feels both nostalgic and new.Finally, we turn to Bill Belichick's turbulent UNC chapter—buyouts, alleged violations, leadership drift, and the complicated math of legacy. Does a legendary résumé guarantee culture fit in college football? We examine communication breakdowns, program stability, and whether stepping away might be the smartest play for everyone involved. Along the way, we connect the dots between Hollywood comebacks and coaching exits: the power of timing, the cost of reputation, and the art of choosing when to return—or retire.Tell us your casting picks for the Passion sequel, then follow, share, and leave a quick review so more curious listeners can find the show. A little something different this week: we're looking at two Soderbergh-scripted adaptations of international genre films! First, Soderbergh adapted Ole Bornedal's 1994 NATTEVAGTEN as 1997's NIGHTWATCH, also directed by Bornedal, starring post-TRAINSPOTTING, pre-PHANTOM MENACE Ewan McGregor as a night watchman at a spooky morgue. Next, Soderbergh turned Fabián Bielinsky's 2000 Argentine heist smash NUEVA REINAS (NINE QUEENS) into 2004's CRIMINAL, the directorial debut of Gregory Jacobs starring John C. Reilly and Diego Luna. Why did Sodey do this? Is there anything of the man in these adaptations? Do you need to watch four films before you listen to this episode? The answer to the last question is no! Fun ep, please enjoy. Further Reading: Steven Soderbergh: Interviews, ed.
