** PLEASE SUBSCRIBE ** Featured in WYGYFF Episode 14: Scholar Dr. Scot Brown, a historian of African-American history, popular culture, and music. A lecturer, commentator, author, writer and musician, producer, and songwriter, Prof. Brown has been working on a book examining Dayton, Ohio's great 1970s funk bands. He has appeared as a subject matter expert in programs covering Heatwave, The O'Jays, The Spinners, The Ohio Players, Midnight Star, DJ Quik, Lakeside, Patrice Rushen, Mtume, and James Brown and Bootsy Collins. This rap session is a treat for serious funk fans and curious music lovers alike, featuring two of the foremost authorities and advocates. RECORDED OCTOBER 2024 Hosted by Scott "DR GX" Goldfine — musicologist, author of “Everything Is on the One: The First Guide of Funk” and creator/host of the popular TRUTH IN RHYTHM podcast — "Where'd You Get Your Funk From?" is the latest interview show brought to you by FUNKNSTUFF.NET. Where'd You Get Your Funk From (WYGYFF) is an open format video and audio podcast focusing on the here and now, with a broad range of creative and artistic guests sharing fascinating stories, experiences, and perspectives. WYGYFF is a welcoming avenue to newer and independent musical acts as well as established and still active musicians of any genre; authors; filmmakers; actors; artists; collectors and archivists; radio & podcast personalities; journalists; scholars; sound techs; promoters; photographers; and other creative people. A common thread, is the show's standard opening question: Where'd you get your funk from? This is much deeper than it may seem as the answer need not be strictly about funky music, as not everyone has found the funk. It could hit on whatever type of music touches their soul or pleasure centers. Additionally, the question extends beyond music. Paraphrasing George Clinton, funk is whatever it needs to be to get you over the hump. Thus, guests can explain where they got their grit, perseverance, inspiration, talent, creativity, character or other qualities that shaped them into who they are today. This serves as a springboard into candid, in-depth and engrossing conversations. LEGAL NOTICE: All video and audio content protected by copyright. FUNK FOUNDATIONS #51 / James MTUME It has been 3 years since we lost one of the most influential percussionist Philadelphia born James Forman aka James Mtume. Raised in a musical family where his father (Jimmy Heath) and uncles formed The Heath Brothers. In the 60's, James studied percussion and he started playing with Herbie Hancock, Joe Henderson, Freddie Hubbard and eventually became the percussionist for Miles Davis. In the Miles Davis band, he hooked up Reggie Lucas (guitar), and started a song writing partnership. The duo Lucas/Mtume wrote and produced mane tracks for artists. He also started his own project, Mtume, where he applied his most innovative sounds. I pay tribute to his boogie funk period with his band and production work which is deep in my funk foundation form E80's….Enjoy the show! George C

Super-special-secret friend Matt Heller (a.k.a. DJ Snakes) joins Lightnin' Lickers Jay and Deon for an in-depth discussion about what he's been listening to. In true DJ form, Snakes brings four rare/abstract vinyl singles to Electric Kitsch for a conversation about the DIY punk scene of his adolescence, the intersection of skateboarding and hip-hop, dusty independent soul holy grail 45s, proto-drumless rap from Wu's G.O.A.T. (arguably), and an unlikely emcee whose appeal is seemingly without boundaries. As always, an eclectic custom mixtape is curated and included on the back end. Lickers gonna lick. Join the fun! Hubert Eaves IV is well known for his incredible playing on Erykah Badu's 1997 live album, entitled "Live." Bass players across the globe are blown away by his tight, crisp pocket playing, locked in perfectly with drummer Poogie Bell. What a lot of people don't know is that Hue had been laying it down for years before the Erykah Badu album. Hubert's father, Hubert Eaves III, was a renowned keyboardist and producer who was part of the band Mtume....you know, the guys who wrote that groove sampled by Notorious B.I.G. for "Juicy." His father was also half of the duo D-Train and wrote and produced for many artists including Jocelyn Brown and Whitney Houston. HEIV picked up both bass and drums at a young age and began to learn the ins and outs of performing and recording music. At the age of 21 he would play bass on Jocelyn Brown's hit single "Ego Maniac." You can hear how nasty his groove was even at age 21 on this track. Since then along with Erykah Badu, HEIV has played with Will Downing, Seal, The O'Jays, Freddie Jackson, Lisa Lisa and the Cult Jam and many others. HEIV is also a talented composer and producer and has four self titled singles out which feature some of most funky-ass grooves you'll ever hear entitled: "Radio," "Dot-Da-Dah," "Incubated Funk," and "Get Up." His collaboration with his wife, Alisa Ohri, on her album "Cuz I Feel" is also a must listen for all bassists. In this episode we talk about how Hue built up his incredibly funky groove, the advantages of being a bassist and drummer and how he originally turned down the Erykah Badu gig....twice!

Episode 69. Host Troy Saunders interviews his fellow Erasmus Hall High School alum, Hubert Eaves IV. Hubert is a multi-talented instrumentalist, composer, and producer, perhaps best known for his infectious pocket bass playing on Erykah Badu's live album. He's also recorded and worked with artists ranging from Will Downing, Alex Bugnon, Freddie Jackson, The O'Jays, Seal, Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes, D Train, Glenn Jones, Lisa Lisa & the Cult Jam, and Snow.Hubert shares some history about his famous father Hubert Eaves III, keyboardist, songwriter and record producer, who played with D Train and Mtume and produced Miles Davis, Stephanie Mills, Madonna, Luther Vandross, Whitney Houston, Aretha Franklin and Phyllis Hyman.Hear Hubert's story about being on tour with Freddie Jackson and meeting an imposter Bootsy Collins after one of the shows. The entire band swore it was the real Bootsy, but Hubert blew him off to everyone's shock. Shortly afterwards, they saw a news report about the fake Bootsy being arrested for writing bad checks. Years later, at a show with Erykah Badu, the real Bootsy was backstage and Hubert was able to meet him and share the story with his idol.Hubert talks about the creative process behind his amazing solo tracks, including “Radio,” “Incubated Funk,”, “Dot-D-Dah!” and “Let's Get Serious”. He also drops news about an unreleased single featuring Will Downing that he'll release “when the time is right”. Troy plays a few clips of Hubert's music and hopes everyone will check out the full songs and make them part of your playlists.Listen and subscribe to the BAAS Entertainment Podcast on Amazon Music, Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Deezer, iHeartRadio, Pandora, Podchaser, Spotify, Stitcher and TuneIn. “Hey, Alexa.
