The Fire That Divides: Living the Cost of Discipleship | Interview with Bill Kassel (Ep. 475)In this episode, we unpack one of Jesus' most arresting declarations: that He came not to bring peace, but fire—and even division. We explore what that means for our homes, our witness, and the cost of true discipleship in a culture allergic to truth. Through five marks of a faith set ablaze, we expose the subtle lies that keep us lukewarm, reveal the psychology behind moral compromise, and share real-life examples of courage, conviction, and passing the flame to the next generation. Then, we're joined by award-winning author Bill Kassel to discuss his powerful biblical novel My Brother's Keeper, a moving reimagining of the life and times of Jesus that challenges us to encounter the Gospel story in fresh and compelling ways. Few voices in rock history are as instantly recognizable as Allan Clarke, the co-founder and lead singer of the iconic British band The Hollies. With a career that spans more than six decades, Allan's soaring vocals, heartfelt delivery, and unforgettable harmonies have become synonymous with the golden age of classic rock and the British Invasion. Known for timeless hits like He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother, Long Cool Woman (In a Black Dress), and Bus Stop, Allan's legacy as a rock legend is as vibrant today as it was in the 1960s.He was born Harold Allan Clarke n Salford, England. As a child, Allan developed a passion for music, drawing inspiration from early rock 'n' roll icons like Elvis, Buddy Holly, and Little Richard. His friendship with Graham Nash—who would later go on to fame with Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young—proved to be the foundation for one of the most beloved bands of all time.In 1962, Clarke and Nash formed The Hollies, a name inspired by their mutual admiration for Buddy Holly. The band's signature sound, marked by bright guitar riffs, tight vocal harmonies, and Allan's powerful yet soulful voice, quickly captured the attention of the British music scene. By '63, The Hollies were signed to the same label as The Beatles. The Hollies scored their first major hit with Stay in '63, but it was songs like Bus Stop and Carrie Anne that cemented their status as hitmakers. Allan Clarke's voice was the emotional core of The Hollies, effortlessly blending pop sensibilities with the raw energy of rock. One of Allan's most defining vocal performances came with the release of He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother in '69. Featuring a young Elton John on piano, the song became a global anthem of brotherhood and compassion. In '72, The Hollies had another worldwide hit with Long Cool Woman , a track that still dominates classic rock radio playlists today. While Allan's legacy is firmly rooted in his work with The Hollies, he also pursued a solo career, releasing several solo albums that blended rock, folk, and country influences.Allan Clarke temporarily left The Hollies in '71 but returned in '73. His second departure in '99 marked what many assumed was the end of his career due to vocal health issues. In 2019, he made a remarkable comeback with his album Resurgence. The project marked his first solo release in decades and proved that his voice still carried the same warmth and emotion that defined his early work. Allan also collaborated with his old friend Graham Nash . His recent work bridges the gap between classic rock nostalgia and modern storytelling. The Hollies, with Allan Clarke at the helm, have sold over 60 million records worldwide and remain one of the most successful groups to emerge from the '60s.Their induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame was a long-overdue recognition of their influence on generations of musicians and fans. Today, Allan Clarke stands as a bridge between the early days of rock ‘n' roll and the present. His journey from the streets of Salford to international stardom with The Hollies is a testament to the enduring power of great music, determination, and collaboration. For classic rock fans, Allan Clarke's voice is not just a sound — it's a memory, an era, and a feeling rolled into one.Whether you're revisiting He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother, grooving to Long Cool Woman, or discovering Clarke's latest music, there's no denying his place in the pantheon of classic rock legends. Join us today as Allan Clarke shares stories of his rise to fame, his friendship with Graham Nash and what the music of The Hollies means to him.

We then cover the Hobbs & Shaw IMDb goofs, including one demonstrating a total waste of time for everyone involved. Is Sean's dad stealing valor? We explore. The Author Events Series presents Paul Muldoon | Joy in Service on Rue Tagore: Poems REGISTER In Conversation with Daisy Fried Since his 1973 debut, New Weather, Paul Muldoon has created some of the most original and memorable poetry of the past half century. Joy in Service on Rue Tagore sees him writing with the same verve and distinction that have consistently won him the highest accolades. Here, from artichokes to zinc, Muldoon navigates an alphabet of image and history, through barleymen and Irish slavers to the last running wolf in Ulster. The search involves the accumulated bric-a-brac of a life, and a reckoning along the way of gains against loss. In the poet's skillful hands, ancient maps are unfurled and brought into focus--the aggregation of Imperial Rome and the dismantling of Standard Oil, the pogroms of a Ukrainian ravine and of a Belfast shipyard. Through modern medicine and warfare, disaster and repair, these poems are electric in their energy, while profoundly humane in their line of inquiry. Paul Muldoon was born in County Armagh in 1951. He now lives in New York. A former radio and television producer for the BBC in Belfast, he has taught at Princeton University for thirty-five years. He is the author of fourteen previous collections of poetry, including Moy Sand and Gravel, for which he won the 2003 Pulitzer Prize. Daisy Fried is the author of five books of poetry: My Destination (forthcoming next year from Flood Editions and Carcanet Press), The Year the City Emptied, Women's Poetry: Poems and Advice, My Brother is Getting Arrested Again, a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle, and She Didn't Mean to Do It. She has been awarded Guggenheim, Hodder and Pew Fellowships. A core faculty member in the MFA Program for Writers at Warren Wilson College, and an occasional poetry critic for the New York Times, Poetry Foundation and elsewhere, she has lived in Philadelphia for decades, but will be moving to San Francisco at the end of the summer. Mental health care in America has become nothing short of atrocious. Supposed developments in treatment methods and medication remain inaccessible to those who need them most. Countless people seeking treatment are routinely funneled into homelessness and prison while a mental-health epidemic ravages younger generations. It seems obvious that the system is broken, but critics say the tragic truth is that it is actually functioning exactly as intended, providing reliably enormous profits for the entities who now manage mental health care. By taking a step back and examining how and why we developed our health-care system, with mental health care as the worst-case example of a dysfunctional model that has been abandoned by all other developed countries, we can understand our motives and actions, and chart a way out of our mess. In this deeply personal and spiritually charged episode of Flow, Cam Cooksey takes listeners on an emotional journey through the lens of brotherhood, faith, and the fight for truth. Titled after the classic ballad “He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother,” Cam opens up about growing up alongside his autistic older brother, sharing heartfelt stories, difficult realities, and the transformative beauty that comes from embracing challenges with love and faith. This isn't just an autism awareness episode, it's a raw conversation about the weaponization of medicine, the soul-crushing effects of over-vaccination, and the silent epidemic few dare to name. Cam blends his personal experience with community insight, shining light on heavy metals, EMFs, and detox protocols like chlorine dioxide that are being explored by families searching for answers. As the show flows from deep philosophical insights to vulnerable chats with the live audience, Cam reminds us that being our brother's keeper isn't a burden...it's our calling. Whether discussing spiritual warfare, the poisoning of our children, or the power of authenticity in a broken world, this episode is a testament to grace, grit, and the light that lives within us all. Honest. Redemptive. Unmissable.
Today's boys and young men are having a tough time. By several measures of success and happiness, they're struggling to keep up and turning to the internet for help, where many end up hooked by extremists. We need to find better ways to frame the problem, support them and push them in the right direction. The solution starts with a frank conversation about what's really going on, according to the experts on this panel from the 2024 Aspen Ideas Festival. Richard Reeves founded the American Institute for Boys and Men and wrote “Of Boys and Men: Why the Modern Male is Struggling, Why It Matters and What To Do About It,” in 2022. He's joined by Michael Strautmanis of the Obama Foundation and My Brother's Keeper Alliance, along with Maryland Governor Wes Moore. NBC News correspondent Stephanie Ruhle moderates the conversation. aspenideas.org
