On the latest episode of The Discourse, host Mike DeAngelo steps into a high-concept, near-future world of moral quandaries and psychological pressure with the sci-fi drama "The Assessment." Directed by Fleur Fortuné and starring Elizabeth Olsen, Alicia Vikander, and Himesh Patel, the film follows a couple evaluated by the government over seven increasingly intense days to determine whether they're worthy of having a child. Think of a creepy, contained "Children of Men" by way of Ingmar Bergman and Charlie Kaufman. The film recently premiered at the Berlin International Film Festival and hits VOD on April 8th, delivering a minimalist but emotionally potent take on societal control, intimacy, and parenthood. To talk through it all, we sat down with both stars to dig into the emotional challenges of the project, their collaborations with Fortuné, and what kind of psychological strength it takes to survive the film's titular assessment.

Yuval and Basel join us in the studio to discuss working together to collect evidence in the village of Masafer Yatta, where Israeli soldiers have destroyed homes, a primary school and the water supply since the zone was declared a military zone by Israeli authorities. Since the film won the Best Documentary Prize at the Berlin International Film Festival, Yuval tells us about the violent threats he's been subjected to from Israeli and German figures and Basel flags up the position of the international community in the face of the ongoing war in the region.

With a diverse portfolio spanning films like Academy Award-winning THE FAVORITE and THE NICE GUYS, featuring Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe, Ken's expertise and vision have shaped the landscape of modern cinema. In today's episode, No Film School's GG Hawkins speaks with Ken Kao, co-founder of Waypoint Entertainment and producer of some of the most anticipated films of 2024, to discuss: How Ken started in the industry, moving from lawyer to producer without film school Advice for emerging filmmakers and indie producers The Waypoint x Neon partnership and the opportunity in mid-budget films How he selects projects, being a genre-agnostic producer How Waypoint stays nimble and adaptive in the ever-changing industry What every producer or aspiring producer should be consuming and Ken's media diet beyond movies Living in Hawaii and maintaining distance from Hollywood His latest feature, "CUCKOO," by Tilman Singer, starring Hunter Schafer, Dan Stevens, and Jessica Henwick Waypoint's involvement in the release of “Longlegs,” directed by Osgood Perkins and starring Nicolas Cage and Maika Monroe Other projects currently in development Memorable quotes: “You never know what's gonna happen when you start making a film” [12:02] “We're all just trying to make good movies that touch people and that we can be proud of” [20:05] “I think the vast majority, especially this younger generation of people, if you're gonna get them off their sofas, getting to put their phone down, take 10 to 20 minutes to drive to a theater park and get it and sit there and give up two hours of their time, you need to give them some kind of authentic experience. I think what's good is subjective, but I think their ability to sniff the BS is high.” [21:55] “As difficult as the film business right now is, I think as a creator, and I'm not just speaking for myself, I'm just speaking for aspiring creators, people that are creating already, in some ways it's as strong as the time has ever.” [41:00] “A good number of people know when actors are choosing movies to make a buck. And when they really love the material and they're putting themselves in that role, in that movie.” [46:07] “Trust your taste, trust what you're trying to say to people, and trust your instincts.” [47:33] Links: Follow Ken Kao on LinkedIn Ken Kao on IMDb Find No Film School everywhere: On the Web https://nofilmschool.com/ Facebook https://www.facebook.com/nofilmschool Twitter https://twitter.com/nofilmschool YouTube https://www.youtube.com/user/nofilmschool Instagram https://www.instagram.com/nofilmschool Send us an email with questions or feedback: podcast@nofilmschool.com! “Made In England: The Films Of Powell And Pressburger” had its world premiere at the Berlin International Film Festival earlier this year, where it received rave reviews for delving into the films and careers of two of the greatest storytellers the medium as ever known: Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger. From “Black Narcissus” to “The Red Shoes,” to “A Matter of Life and Death,” to “The Tales of Hoffmann,” their collaboration inspired a generation and is still revered for their daring artistry to this day. Director David Hinton and Executive Producer Thelma Schoonmaker (and Powell's widow wife) were both kind enough to spend a few minutes answering questions about the documentary, which is now playing at Quad Cinema in New York City and will open in Los Angeles at the Landmark's Nuart Theater on July 26th with a national rollout to occur afterward. Cuckoo Review | Bizarre New Midnight Classic? #cuckoo #hunterschafer #neon Cuckoo is a 2024 horror film written and directed by Tilman Singer. The film stars Hunter Schafer, Dan Stevens and Jessica Henwick. It had its world premiere at the 74th Berlin International Film Festival on February 16, 2024. In February, a group of film students and instructors from College of the North Atlantic decided to take in a movie. But not the latest offering at the local movie theatre. Nope! They hopped on a flight to Germany for the 75th Berlin International Film Festival. They experienced the red carpet, rubbed elbows with major industry players, were invited to an event at the Canadian Embassy - and, oh yeah. and saw a few films. too. Ben Smith is an instructor with CNA's TV and Film department. Oliver Bartlett is a student currently studying TV and Film Technical Production.

This week we're excited to present a conversation with director Bas Devos and actress Liyo Gong to discuss the NYFF61 Main Slate selection, HERE, opening at Film at Lincoln Center on February 9th. Get tickets at filmlinc.org/here. Stefan, a migrant construction worker living in Brussels, is planning a trip home to his mother in Romania. In preparing for his voyage, he reconnects with local family members over gifted bowls of homemade soup, interacts with strangers, and discovers a revivifying commune with nature. This all leads him to an unexpected connection with Shuxiu, a Chinese-Belgian bryologist, who's studying the local moss. The gradual cultivation of this friendship—beautifully performed by actors Stefan Gota and Liyo Gong—motivates this hushed, emotionally resonant film about the power of observation, of people often deemed socially invisible, and of the larger green world surrounding us. In his lovely and tranquil fourth feature, Belgian filmmaker Bas Devos (GHOST TROPIC) has created a work that finds transcendence in the simplest human encounters and the most radiant of cinematic gestures. Winner of the Best Film prize in the Berlin International Film Festival's Encounters competition. A Cinema Guild release.

Finally, she moved to Germany to study filmmaking at the German Film Academy in Berlin. This week we're excited to present a conversation with director Christian Petzold about his new film, Afire, now playing in our theaters courtesy of Janus and Sideshow Films. Set against the backdrop of a seaside town threatened by encroaching wildfires, Christian Petzold's latest is a breezy, often funny, yet emotionally layered melodrama of creative and romantic insecurities along the German Riviera. The film centers around Leon, a disgruntled novelist struggling to finish his manuscript while traveling with his photographer friend to a vacation home near the Baltic Sea, where they're met by an unexpected third house guest, Nadja (Paula Beer;, whose presence distracts Leon as much as it cringingly exposes his self-obsessed bubble. Full of sunkissed tints and nocturnal blues, Afire finds the director operating with a deceptively light touch, but what starts as a hangout comedy gradually opens up into something entirely more surprising and psychologically complex. The film is the winner of the Silver Bear Grand Jury Prize at the 2023 Berlin International Film Festival. This conversation was moderated by Film Comment Co-Deputy Editor, Devika Girish.
