In the twenty-fourth episode of Season 11: The Son of Cult Flicks, Kyle is joined by screenwriter David Gutierrez and filmmaker Mario Ruiz to discuss the experimental, phantasmagoric, and surrealist dive into the underground gay subculture of Japan in the 60s where a loose adaptation of Oedipus Rex guides us through shifting genres, changing identities, and a contorted script of experience in Toshio Matsumoto's barrier smashing Funeral Parade of Roses (1969).

New interview with Samm Deighan - noted film historian and host of the Eros + Massacre podcast. Some of you may have heard this before, Samm was kind enough to let us repost the audio from our conversation about Michele Soavi. If you have not heard her podcast yet you can get a sample here, she was nice enough to invite me on as a first guest. Since then she has covered Funeral Parade of Roses, sexual anarchist Rudy Ray Moore, blu-ray anarchist Adam Torel of Third Window films, a Bava episode, plus a conversation with Fabio Frizzi. I love what her show has become and hope this serves as a good sample.Either way, please enjoy this. I hope my love for Michele Soavi and Italian genre cinema shines through. Looking forward we have some very exciting guests that are just getting scheduled, so the fall season will see a bunch of activity again after a brief time away. “Corpses, Fools and Monsters: The History and Future of Transness in Cinema” (out Tuesday) is one of our favorite film books of the year, and we're welcoming both of its authors as consecutive guests. This week, film critic Willow Catelyn Maclay joins us to talk about the movies of 1969, from the ahead-of-its-time freedom of “Funeral Parade of Roses” to the Gotham grime of “Midnight Cowboy” to the delightful silliness of “Gamera vs Guiron.” For show notes - including where to stream this week's movies, links to referenced media, and more - subscribe on Buttondown at https://buttondown.email/AVeryGoodYear. https://plus.acast.com/s/a-very-good-year. In April 2021, Film Comment published a Trans Cinema Roundtable Podcast, in which two trans film critics and two trans filmmakers answered questions submitted by listeners on what constitutes a cinema of transness. Now, two of those panelists—Caden Mark Gardner and Willow Catelyn Maclay—are about to publish a new book on that very subject. Corpses, Fools and Monsters is a thorough inquiry into the history, present, and future of what Caden and Willow call the “trans film image”—not a fully developed cinema, yet, but gestures, glimpses, and traces that have been visible in film from its earliest days and have now gained a renewed creative force. On today's episode, Caden and Willow join Film Comment Editor Devika Girish to talk about the extensive research they understood for the book, why representation can be a complex term for trans cinephiles, and films from reappraised classics like Jonathan Demme's The Silence of the Lambs (1991) and Toshio Matsumoto's Funeral Parade of Roses (1969) to new works by trans filmmakers, including Vera Drew's The People's Joker and Jane Schoenbrun's I Saw the TV Glow.

Having just visited Malta and witnessed an historic weekend of football, Lee tells Paul all about the key events in Europe's only island micro-state in Part 1. Who came out on top in the title-decider between Ħamrun Spartans & Floriana? Why do Valletta hold a funeral parade through the streets when they win the league? How has the island reacted to the capital club's first relegation? And what is it like to accidentally get caught up in a bus parade? Part 2 is dedicated to three big stories on three different continents: Africa, Europe & South America. Two teams think they have won the Republic Youth League in Egypt – but why? Who was allegedly behind the poisoning of Sochi's players before their recent game against Akhmat Grozny in Russia? And what unique tribute did Brazilians Cariri pay to their owner after gaining promotion to the Campeanato Cearense Série A last week? Tune in to The Sweeper to find out the answers – and join us on Patreon at patreon.com/SweeperPod for a bonus segment as we answer some big questions from across Europe. Which is the only top-30 UEFA nation to have rejected VAR? What was the unlikely resting place for a shot in the third tier of French football? And did a former Port Vale player really get a pilot's license just to mock his old club's relegation? This is a very special episode where we were invited, by friend of the podcast So Mayer to discuss a new film screening series and project. In 2022 and 2023, a series of trans-focused film events took place across the UK as part of Inclusive Cinema's T.L.C (aka Tender Loving Care for Trans-Led/Trans-Loved Cinema) project. Integrated into indie cinema and festival programmes, films were screened with Q&As and panels on diverse topics related to trans visibility in cinema, thanks to support from the BFI Film Audience Network (BFI FAN) awarding National Lottery funding. These events were recorded live and have been made into a podcast series. Alongside these podcasts, there is a guide to Good Practice Examples for Tricky Questions also on the project's website, linked to above. These questions and answers were created alongside, and refer to, the three T.L.C. podcasts and discussions around screenings. For this special episode of the podcast, Dario (he/him) spoke to So (they/them), along with Film Critic and podcaster Lillian Crawford (she/her), who introduced the first film of the series - screened at the Lexi Cinema - the extraordinary Japanese film Funeral Parade of Roses, in July 2022. This week three films about trans people recommended by transgender friends of ours and one film by a trans woman. We discuss these films in broad terms for general viewers with the hope that will help them be seen by more people and for those viewers to begin larger dialogs. We are not the people who should, or even really could, have a more in depth discussion about them. Trans rights are human rights. Boys Don't Cry- inspired by the true story of Brandon Teena, a trans man who tried to find himself and love but instead was brutally murdered by two cishet male acquaintances. Black Lizard (1968)- Sanae is kidnapped by the notorious criminal mastermind Black Lizard. Her father enlists the help of master detective Kogoro Akechi to bring her home. Twists, double crosses, disguises within disguises, a brilliant lead performance, and multiple abrupt love stories make this a tragically overlooked classic. Funeral Parade of Roses- Eddie works as a host at Genet night club. Leda is the club's managing "lead girl" and begins to suspect that Eddie is sleeping with the owner, who also happens to be Leda's partner, to move up the ranks. Leda is correct. There are also flashbacks of murder, film students, and documentary interviews with the cast as their real life selves. A brilliant art film that smears lines and disregards conventional narrative for a fascinating meta look at the Tokyo scene it was created in. Solomon Kane- Based on the pulp character created by Robert E Howard. The Devil comes to claim the soul of Puritan and privateer Solomon Kane. Kane flees to a remote monastery but is soon set on his path of redemption. A path that will carve a bloody trail all the way back to his childhood. All that and a far from gentle reminder that trans rights are human rights. We condemn the attacks on this simple truth, not just the current massive push at local and national levels across the globe but those through out history. Episode 250- Trans People Films to Spit in Transphobic Eyes (OR... JK Blocks Us)

You probably haven't heard of this bit of LGBTQ-focused Japanese psychedelia from the late 1960s, and neither had we until our guest Conner Shin brought it to our attention. Turns out it's wildly unique, pretty influential and just plain great. Topics include Asian bath house culture, the surprising durability of LGBT stories across countries and cultures, and of course...ska.Matt recommends Portrait of Jason, available to stream on Kanopy and Criterion Collection and available for rent or purchase on iTunes and Amazon.Dan recommends Chronicle of a Summer, directed by Jean Rouch, available for free on Vimeo, or Joean Rouch's The Mad Masters, which is VERY difficult to find.David recommends Hedwig and the Angry Inch, available to stream on Kanopy and available for rent or purchase on all major digital platforms.Conner recommends Jodorowsky's Dune available for rent or purchase on all major digital platforms, and Come and See, available to stream on Criterion Channel.
Tokyo drag icon and sister of three years Labianna enters Chi Chiの家 on the seventh floor of somewhere in Shinjuku to discuss the CITY OF TOKYO and the 1969 gay boy classic FUNERAL PARADE OF ROSES 薔薇の葬列. Together they stab themselves with the overwhelming beauty of life in a metropolis (so many people on the TRAINS!), terror on the cruising grounds, the perfect female form, uncertainty in your ability to get a gig, they threaten suicide at the edge of your glistening youth and at the unending wall of gay men on dating apps, thrusting a knife into your eye because there are too many straight men at the bar you will never be able to touch… Follow Labianna on Twitter: twitter.com/labiannajoroe And I'M SO POPULAR: twitter.com/imsopopular impopular.me (S2.E27)
Prepare for a heated face-off between the annoyed extroverts and the misunderstood introverts, as we tackle the rampant ennui and soulmate shenanigans of Sophia Coppola's Lost in Translation. How can two people be so unhappy when their lives are so cushy? Who thought making fun of Japanese accents was still ok in 2003? And where can we find a karaoke lounge perched over the city like that? In this episode, the only thing we can all agree on is that Giovanni Ribisi is an awful husband. «Funeral Parade of Roses» - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0064068/ Usando este enlace puedes probar MUBI. Another Director's Lottery week, another chance for Tim, Mick, Rob and Graham to tear the show apart over the merits (or demerits) of a classic film - this time Toshio Matsumoto's punk-as-hell queer Oedipus Rex modernisation Funeral Parade of Roses. And if you think that sentence was a lot to take on board, wait until you hear the impassioned armchair debate. That's not debate conducted from armchairs. That's debate ABOUT armchairs. Off the Shelf has two Blu-Ray reissues from Luc Besson's '90s work, as Studio Canal offer Tim and Mick the chance to reassess The Fifth Element and The Messenger: The Story of Joan of Arc. Were we right to be irritated by Chris Tucker's performance in the former? Or to ignore the latter entirely? sode fifty-one picks up where we left off exploring queer focused cult films. This time Alec and Derek take a look at Toshio Matsumoto’s 1969 kaleidoscopic reimagining of Oedipus Rex, Funeral Parade Of Roses (薔薇の葬列). Eddie, played by Japanese trans star Peter, works her way up the hierarchy of late 60’s Tokyo gay bars, by dancing, screwing and serving killer looks with her band of fellow queers and hippies, while gradually sinking into the depths of familial tragedy. This experimental masterpiece of the Japanese new wave, mixes genres and cinematic techniques, and would prove a major influence on Stanley Kubrick’s classic A Clockwork Orange. It’s power hasn’t dimmed in the fifty years since its release.

Chris is joined by The Projection Booth's Mike White to continue Mike White March with a look at Toshio Matsumoto's Funeral Parade of Roses. The film follows Eddie, a Japanese transvestite, who unknowingly becomes a participant in his own Oedipus Rex adaptation. It's another fantastic entry into the Japanese New Wave movement and a film that transcends explanation and genre. As always, you can follow Chris Stachiw at @KultureStach, Eric Kniss at @tychomagnetics and Kulture Shocked at @KultureShocked. The music is Wovoka's “Lament,” and Da DeCypher's “Two Step featuring Ben-Jamin”; big thanks to both for allowing us to use their tracks.
