From MPR News, Art Hounds are members of the Minnesota arts community who look beyond their own work to highlight what's exciting in local art. Their recommendations are lightly edited from the original submission.A path to healingRuth Sloven is a St. Paul-based artist. She recommends the group exhibition “WITNESS עֵד,” a group art show by Jewish artists for Palestinian liberation, at Modus Locus in Minneapolis.Ruth says: This exhibit includes ceramics, sculpture, community, quilting, painting and video. Many of the works are traditional Jewish subjects, which have been repurposed in non-traditional ways. What I'm excited about is that it's a doorway into experiencing and expressing the grief about the destructive war in Israel and Gaza, and hopefully can be part of a path to healing.— Ruth SlovenStop, collaborate and listenJoseph “JoJo” Howsley is a music enthusiast based in Fargo. He recommends a showcase by Human Artistic Collaborations on Saturday, May 31, starting at 6 p.m. at Brühaven in Minneapolis.Joseph says: I met Kyle Krause last weekend. He is the head of Human Artistic Collaborations, whose aim is primarily to champion human-led art in a space that's constantly being inundated by artificial intelligence. They're doing an event with one of my favorite producers in the scene. His name is Deerskin, and they have over, I believe he said, 12 artists who will be showcasing and selling their art.— JoJo Joseph HousleyEpp squaredKari Olk is a Brooklyn-based teaching artist who grew up in Minneapolis. She recommends “Orlando: A Rhapsody,” playing at the Southern Theater in Minneapolis through June 8.Carrie says: “ORLANDO: A Rhapsody” by Vinora Epp and Steven Epp is a thoughtful reflection about art, gender, storytelling. It's both based on Virginia Woolf — a few of her writings: “The Waves,” “A Room of One's Own” and, of course, “Orlando” — and it's also combined with writing from Vinora and Steve. To see them working together is really special. And so it's really exciting to see her directorial debut, and it's really exciting that she's doing this work with her dad, Steve. The story of “Orlando” is a story about a person who, over 300 years, goes back and forth between being a young woman and a young man, and they both perform as Orlando, and they both perform as versions of themselves.— Carrie OlkCorrection (May 29, 2025): An earlier version of this story misspelled Kyle Krause. The story has been updated.

This time of year brings back memories of Christmases gone by. I think most of us reflect on holiday seasons that were simpler, but somehow better. Singer/songwriter Shirley Montague has written some original songs that talk about her childhood in Labrador. They were released on her Christmas album, "Trapper's Christmas," in 1988.

The mysterious beauty Leslie Moore is the subject of this Anne's House of Dreams character study. Ragon and Kelly discuss the myths and metaphors surrounding Leslie, and whether she is properly humanized in the text. Digressions include Favorite Things parties, how to talk to kids about stereotypes in media, and the tragic beauty trope. Inspired By: Kelly is inspired by Leslie's style and recommends red flower choker-style necklaces like this gorgeous one from Free People. Ragon is inspired by the beautiful fairytale retellings by Robin McKinley, especially Beauty and Rose Daughter for Beauty and the Beast retellings and Deerskin for a darker fairytale about the curse of being beautiful. And don't forget Spindle's End for a Sleeping Beauty retelling. The impact that Maharishi Mahesh Yogi had on the world is inestimable. With millions of people practicing the meditation technique that he popularized around the world, and many thousands more learning each year, the ripple effect of his work will last for centuries to come. And not just here on earth. It's fitting that Maharishi's three favorite words, Jai Guru Deva, inspired lyrics within the famous Beatles song, Across the Universe, which, in 2008, became the first song beamed by NASA into deep space. But what was it like being up close with Maharishi? In this episode Thom shares some of his observations from his 25 plus years of direct contact with Maharishi in India and throughout the world, often around the clock and for weeks and months on end.He describes Maharishi's most endearing characteristics and the impact they had on him personally, declaring that Maharishi shaped him to become the man he is today. And for bonus value, he also shares the origins of another song from The Beatles that can be attributed to being influenced by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi.Episode Highlights[00:55] What Maharishi Was Like[03:14] An Inspiration to The Beatles[04:58] A Great Grace[07:17] Glory to Guru Deva[09:23] An Artful Walk[10:06] An Armful of Flowers[11:09] A Car Seat in Sydney[12:39] A Coffee Table and a Deerskin[14:26] Questions From the Floor[16:14] Response to Worthy Inquiry[17:13] Dear Prudence[18:56] Contagious Laughter[20:18] Hari the Cook[21:52] Feeling the Food[23:14] An Incessant Phenomenon[24:28] A Great Buzz of Activity[25:58] The Colorless Sap[28:06] What Happened?[29:57] Is It Understood?[31:57] From This Angle, From That Angle[33:24] Creating MeUseful Linksinfo@thomknoles.com https://thomknoles.com/https://www.instagram.com/thethomknoleshttps://www.facebook.com/thethomknoleshttps://www.youtube.com/c/thomknoleshttps://thomknoles.com/ask-thom-anything/

Alive and IN PERSON!! For the first time in about two years (That's right we were remote recording before it was fashionable), Tosin, Sharon and Shaun are in the same room to discuss If they'll ever stop making purge movies with the Forever purge If Killer Fashion is becoming a viable subgenre of horror with Deerskin If we can be bothered to talk about Escape Room : Tournament of Champions On the Netflix (and friends) side of things we talk Sneaky, Sneaky Loki (or to give him his real name Kevin Feige) Motherland on the BBC and Kevin Hart being the straight man in Fatherhood. Is Netflix killing cinemas? Each week we weigh up what we've seen in cinemas with what we've watched online at home and figure out which provided the best time. At least, we did before COVID jumped in and declared Netflix, Amazon Prime, Disney + and friends the winner. The Croods 2: A New Age - The prehistoric family the Croods are challenged by a rival family the Bettermans, who claim to be better and more evolved. Deerskin - A man's obsession with his designer deerskin jacket causes him to blow his life savings and turn to crime. The Very Excellent Mr Dundee - Paul Hogan is reluctantly thrust back into the spotlight as he desperately attempts to restore his sullied reputation on the eve of being knighted. Archive - 2038: George Almore is working on a true human-equivalent AI. His latest prototype is almost ready. This sensitive phase is also the riskiest. The crew comes back with another CRAAAZY episode. Come see what the gang everyone has been up to, and what shenanigan's the 4th of July held. CO vaccine lottery; it'd be sick to win a million dollars for believing science, but a heavy handed reminder we live in a blue dot in a red state. We were able to watch the movie “Deerskin” which featured killer clothing. We discuss the fun, creative, new feel. Does the gang believe they have “Killer Style”? What clothing article would we kill for?Does it ever cross your mind that you could buy a haunted object when thrifting? Has anyone in the gang received a haunted object? sponsor me…The gang looks for brand sponsors. Shoutout to a CO Non-profit: “Wholly Kicks”, NPO based out of Aurora. Their goal is to reach impoverished communities, as well as individuals at risk of homelessness by providing new shoes and socks. “All people are whole people and deserve a new pair of kicks”; Heard about this NPO on the news, as their storage locker was broken into and cleared of every pair of shoes, except 2.
