Adam Swanson is 19 years old and is 1.5 years into a world cycling tour as a gap year between high school and college. He is traveling to educate himself on the world before going to university, to grow as a person, and to grow his love for cycle touring. He's toured with his family all his life, ever since his dad and pregnant mom pulled him in a Burley trailer across Mexico as a baby. Since then he's toured the US from coast to coast, Cuba, Eastern Europe and gone on some weekend trips with family and friends. Now he is doing it on his own, free and happy to continue this lifestyle. He's been on the road now for over a year and has cycled across 19 countries between Thailand and The Netherlands. Now he is continuing his trip Patagonia.Enjoy the conversation. Be bold. Another great conversation with my third-favorite artist (behind my wife and Van Gogh). Wait till you hear where his next artist's residency is taking him! Adam is a textbook example of putting in the work to not only achieve recognition and sustainability in one's chosen vocation, but also in becoming an indispensable part of the community. https://www.buymeacoffee.com/eddygilmore. https://www.adamswanson.com
Adam Swanson has virtually grown up on a bike. He was just an infant when his family took a bike tour across Mexico, and now, at 18 years old, he is on his first solo worldwide tour. After graduating high school last year, he set off for a gap year traveling the world with the full support of his family who are longtime Warmshowers hosts. Adam believes that long-term travel at his age makes you a more open-minded person and is the perfect way to get to know the world. Bike touring before college can also spark interest in a field of study you would never have thought of if you started classes right out of high school. Adam has already developed a desire to attend college abroad instead of returning to the United States as he had initially planned.Adam brings a very unique perspective to what's possible for young tourers. His advice to any young person considering a tour is to go solo. People feel more comfortable approaching a solo tourer, plus it also makes you more outgoing. He has met so many more people traveling solo than he ever met when traveling with a group. Adam is making connections to last a lifetime on his tour across the world, helping him mature into a well-rounded individual ready for the next stage of his life. Between turns in his new sauna, Adam Swanson talks about his time in Antarctica and what it's like to sauna at the South Pole. Apologies for some sound issues here. Shouldn't happen again.
Woke up jazzed after a fantastic visit with artist Adam Swanson. I was the first guest in his new sauna, and wanted to offer a few thoughts as a prelude to our recording. Reconnecting with him reawakened me in some ways.

This episode was recorded live on September 28th, 2020 on Zoom. We begin our two year anniversary show with two open micers before getting into our two headliners. First, Adam Swanson. He is a writer and works as an advocate specializing in public health equity. His writing has appeared in O, The Oprah Magazine, the Lambda Literary Review, the Washington Post, and elsewhere. He works full-time at the Suicide Prevention Resource Center, and is a master's student in the Creative Writing Program at Emerson College in Boston. Then, we have Bobby Miller. He is a performance poet, writer, actor and photographer. He is the author of 23 books of photography and poetry and all books are available at Blurb.com. He has performed his original material at Lincoln Center, The Smithsonian Institute, New York University, and was also a winner in The National Poetry Slam as a member of The Nuyorican Poets. He has been seen on television on the PBS program City Arts and the BBC/PBS produced program The Clive James Hour. Mr. Miller also curated and hosted Verbal Abuse, a spoken word evening, the first Sunday of each month at Jackie 60 & Mother Nightclub in New York City.
Ecologist Tom Hollenhorst, of Duluth, Minn., recommends the art exhibit “The Mirrors” by Adam Swanson, on display at the Great Lakes Aquarium and online through the month of August. He calls it a science-meets-art collection. Each of the paintings features a federally listed threatened and endangered animal of Minnesota. The colors of the paintings are bright and joyful, and the pairings of wild animals with humans or scientific equipment can be thought-provoking or humorous. The Minnesota Fringe Virtual Festival runs through Sunday, and comedian John Gebretatose suggests tuning into the half diary-reading, half improv show, “OMG.” He says the show centers on guests reading from their actual teen diaries, after which improv actors create scenes inspired by the material. Gebretatose called the show “angsty and hilarious … and healing.” “OMG” runs Thursday, Saturday and Sunday nights at 7 p.m. as part of the Fringe Festival. Freelance theater director Shalee Cole Mauleón is excited about the Fringe show “Instructions for a Habitat Inventory” from Playable Artworks. Through your smartphone, you choose a personal habitat to explore, such as your home or neighborhood. Actors give instructions and ask questions, making you an active member of the performance. Mauleón says Margo Gray has assembled a talented cast of actors of color. Between the pandemic and the uprisings following the killing of George Floyd, Mauleón called “Instructions for a Habitat Inventory,”a timely show that left her looking at her home in a new way. One of Duluth's most visible - and busiest - artists Adam Swanson recently returned from an artist residency aboard the research vessel Falkor, where he captured images of science with art. Swanson, who recently finished a giant owl mural in Duluth's Lincoln Park neighborhood, joins Christa Lawler and Barrett Chase on the podcast this week to talk about his recent assignment at sea and how that work re-energizes him once he returns to his home studio.
