The pictures made it look like a parody. Eleven minutes after taking off from a West Texas launch site, Jeff Bezos' Blue Origin space capsule touched down with its all-female celebrity crew. Bezos opened the capsule door and greeted his fiancé. One by one the women filed out, each in their snazzy blue, flared space outfits. Having technically been in space for just four minutes, the popstar Katy Perry knelt down and kissed the ground. I feel the same about space tourism as I do about climbing Mt Everest. In the broadest possible terms, the idea is really appealing. I'd love to go to space! But as it stands today, actually appreciating how much resource is involved, and the extent to which money rather than talent is the only thing separating anyone from the loftiest heights... I can't bear the thought. We all know Jeff Bezos isn't spending billions upon billions to push the boundaries of scientific understanding. He's going as a vanity project. It all feels a bit gross. Perhaps when space tourism is a little more normalised and they can achieve economies of scale, I'll quietly eat my words and find the whole thing a little more palatable. But for what it's worth, I'd hand my explorer-of-the-week award not to Katy Perry and Jeff Bezos' other half, but to the crew of the Schmidt Ocean Institute's Falkor vessel, who just captured the first ever footage of a colossal squid in its natural environment. Colossal squid are the largest invertebrates on the planet – 500kgs without a spine! And yet for all that science has achieved, we know remarkably little about them. It's only a century since the species was first discovered, and we know most of what we know about them today because of their predators. Sperm whales, in turns out, are much better at tracking down colossal squid than we are. 600m below the surface of the South Atlantic, somewhere off the coast of the Antarctic South Sandwich Islands, in an area so remote that the next closest humans were on the International Space Station, the group of scientists used an unmanned submersible to film the most extraordinary footage of a juvenile colossal squid. Forget anything that Katy Perry or Jeff Bezos' wife-to-be might be seeing out the window of their shuttle; set against the absolute black of the deep deep, the squid was purpleish and orange, elegant, brilliantly, beautifully alien. Isn't it amazing that our species can send a rocket with a popstar to space, and yet it's taken us until 2025 to actually record an Earth-based tentacled beast that can grow as long as a bus and weigh as much as a cow? I just think it's such a timely reminder. For whatever fascinations and discoveries await us in the infinite depths of the cosmos, there are still so many miracles and mysteries much closer to home, in the infinite depths of the real blue origin. This week on the show, I wanted to talk through the creation of a character who will not only show up in episode 500 next week but also some subsequent Thirteenth Hour stories. I wanted to explore some of the references, motivations, and conflicts behind the character, who I am calling Faltron, the cloud dragon, kind of a mix between Falkor from the film, The Neverending Story and Voltron from the cartoon, Voltron: Defender of the Universe (you will hear some music from the theme in the show). I came up with the idea years ago and toyed around with the idea of an amorphous being that could transfer in to a more solid shape if cold but have a more gaseous, cloud-like structure in warmer temperatures. While I'm still toying with how he will fit in to future stories, fleshing him out for the DnD session in episode 500 helped quite a bit.As a little preview, here is a little sketch that will show up next week (see it at https://13thhr.wordpress.com/2025/03/03/the-thirteenth-hour-podcast-499-creating-a-new-thirteenth-hour-creature-who-is-the-cloud-dragon/)Thanks for listening!∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞ Signup for the mailing list for a free special edition podcast, a demo copy of The Thirteenth Hour, and access to retro 80s soundtrack! Entrevista completa:

“The biggest takeaway from the 2024 election,” writes Justin Longo of the Independence Center, is that “independents have officially broken the duopoly and now share the title of America's largest political group with Republicans.” But what is an independent, exactly? What do they want and how are they different from those who proudly affiliate with the Republican or Democratic parties? And what might this portend for the future of American politics? Saving Elephants host Josh Lewis is joined by pollster Brett Loyd to make sense of the rise of the independents in the electorate. About Brett Loyd President and CEO of The Bullfinch Group, Brett Loyd is a leading researcher and campaign strategist, being one of the few political operatives to accurately forecast the 2008, 2012, 2016, and 2020 presidential elections. “They look like big, good, strong hands, don't they? I always thought that's what they were.” We watched “The Neverending Story” with our friend Jared Anderson and we've got some unresolved trauma to work through. Listen, this movie scarred an entire generation of kids with some not-so-childlike themes - we're talking bullying, loss of a parent, despair, and the most noble horse you ever did see succumbing to the swamp of sadness. Needless to say we needed a therapist to walk us through our re-watch of this ‘80s fantasy classic so we called on good Judy Jared. Bastian Balthazar Bux (Barret Oliver) isn't like other boys - he's a sensitive loner who draws unicorns when he should be paying attention in class. He also loves to read. When he finds the gigantic book titled The Neverending Story he takes that as a challenge and soon we meet Atreyu (Noah Hathaway) and Artax (RIP), and the colorful (gay) inhabitants of “Fantasia”. Every girl and gay boy had a crush on Atreyu and we all wanted to be The Childlike Empress (Tami Stronach). Don't even get us started on Falkor - we're still waiting for our very own Luck Dragon. We may still be getting over all the feels this movie stirred up but the film itself is a beautiful pre-CG fanstasy masterpiece with an absolutely killer theme song. Let's all give the Childlike Empress a new name and save Fantasia from The Nothing! Say it with us… MoonChild! It's time for the magical adventures of a bunch of 80s kids and their recreational drugs. We depart this world for that of Fantastica with The NeverEnding Story. Yes, that is the capitalization... This episode has it all. Rach mistaking the identities of our two boy leads and spending half the episode thinking they are the same person. We hear dog-dragon Falkor impressions. Rach does her best voiceover character work. And we cry, hard, for Artax.

For this week's episode, we both read the novel by Michael Ende (which Andrew did twice), and then rewatched (for the hundredth time in Brant's case) the movie.A heroic story of adventure, fantastical creatures, the terrifying Gmork, Falkor the Luck Dragon, and many a childhood crush in Atreyu and Moonchild, the film might be kitsch, but with child-like charm!Today's root beer is Filbert's Pumpkin.Intro and Outro music by Stockmusic331 on Pond5

Pufnstuf (also known as Pufnstuf Zaps the World) is a 1970 American comedy fantasy musical film produced by Sid and Marty Krofft Enterprises and released by Universal Pictures. It is based on the children's television series H.R. Pufnstuf, a show that features a cast of puppets on a "living island." The NeverEnding Story is a 1984 fantasy film co-written and directed by Wolfgang Petersen (in his first English-language film), and based on the 1979 novel The Neverending Story by Michael Ende. It was produced by Bernd Eichinger and Dieter Giessler, and stars Noah Hathaway, Barret Oliver, Tami Stronach, Patricia Hayes, Sydney Bromley, Gerald McRaney and Moses Gunn, with Alan Oppenheimer providing the voices of Falkor and Gmork (as well as other characters). It follows a boy who finds a magical book that tells of a young warrior who is given the task of stopping the Nothing, a dark force, from engulfing the wonderland world of Fantasia. At the time of its release, it was the most expensive film produced outside the United States or the Soviet Union. It was the first in The NeverEnding Story film series. It adapts only the first half of the book, and consequently does not convey the message of the title as it was portrayed in the novel. The second half of the book was subsequently used as a rough basis for the second film, The NeverEnding Story II: The Next Chapter (1990). The third film, The NeverEnding Story III: Escape from Fantasia (1994), has an original plot not based on the book. Bradley and I also trade quotes on expectations and here's the one I couldn't think of when we recorded:“expectations are premeditated resentments”After doing a little digging, I believe this is shared in AA and it appears to originate from a full quote:“Unspoken expectations are premeditated resentments.”― Neil Strauss, The Truth: An Uncomfortable Book About Relationships Transcript available at LainieRowell.com. Steal the most unwieldy leather-bound tome you can find from your mysterious neighborhood bookseller and hide in your school's spooky attic as we fly off into a serious childhood touchstone, 1984's The NeverEnding Story. Is the raw egg swilling dad in this a secret alcoholic? Do we all have deep deep horse girl feelings? Why does this movie swing between scaring the crap out of kids, and making them bawl in utter grief? And for all the great puppetry in this—hello Falkor, you amazing fantasy steed—why does the evil Nothing wolf look like a Chuck E. Cheese side character? We're sure the answers will come from this heartrendingly plaintive child ruler named after our hippie mom.

Originally aired on May 8, 2023.This week, I'm working on the coverart for the track that I was working on in episode 402. The track itself is now done, and you can actually listen to it at the end of this episode or on Bandcamp. However, the picture to go with the track was not. I wanted it to be pixelart and decided to give a nod to some of the 80s and 90s films that influenced the story and themes in The Thirteenth Hour - films like Flight of the Navigator, The Last Starfighter, Back to the Future, The Rocketeer, and The Neverending Story. I used the silver ship, Max, from Flight of the Navigator, the Delorean from Back to the Future, the Gunstar from The Last Starfighter, Atreyu riding Falkor from The Neverending Story, and Cliff Secord from The Rocketeer - all fliers - flanking the pixelart Logan that I made decades ago. In true form, Logan is flying through the air leaving a rainbow exhaust trail (where the track gets its name).Speaking of Flight of the Navigator, the slow intro that I used for this track was meant to be a direct ode also to the most excellent soundtrack of that film done by Alan Silvestri (who also did the Back to the Future soundtrack). You can actually find the whole soundtrack on Youtube:https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLq6QtwrGW1_9HF_LyRS1DNvCl8slXcYNOListen to the track in full here! https://joshuablum.bandcamp.com/track/riding-a-rainbow∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞ Signup for the mailing list for a free special edition podcast, a demo copy of The Thirteenth Hour, and access to retro 80s soundtrack!Like what you see or hear? (Or, if you're a hardcore fan, you're welcome for the exclusive, behind-the-scenes raw podcast.) Initially, an unedited version of this episode was uploaded. The newer version is a lot more fun to listen to. Inklings Variety Hour welcomes author Jonathan Geltner to the show to discuss The Neverending Story! Yes, The Neverending Story is a 1979 children's novel by Michael Ende, who was never an Inkling, and it was made famous by the 1984 movie which Ende disavowed. We get it. But we really, really love synth. In all seriousness, Inklings fans should read this underrated book, as it has much to say about the virtues and perils of imagination and other worlds. Among other things discussed: The Catholic Imagination Conference 1980s Fantasy Films The Second Half of The Neverending Story and the dangers of fantasy The evolution of the term "fantasy" Carl Conrad Coreander and Chesterton's/Dickens' "MOOR EEFFOC" Possible military implications of Falkor coming to Vancouver Fantasy as part of reality, rather than an escape from it "Fantastica: It just sounds better in German" Geography and Landscape in Fantasy Tomorrow, we will post a bonus episode discussing Jonathan's own highly acclaimed debut novel, Absolute Music. Both conversations are part of a larger discussion about fairy stories, fantasy, and imagination. This episode masterfully produced by Logan Huggins. There are a few more sonic treasures like this sprinkled throughout the season--enjoy them! Chris continues to try to grapple with the basics of editing for future episodes--but that, as they say, is another story, and will be told another time.

In this two-for-one, the ladies review the 80s classic The NeverEnding Story and the long-running Japanese show Old Enough. The chart-topping and infectious hit theme song from the NeverEnding story is caught in Kara and Laura's heads as they enter the studio! Based on the German novel, The NeverEnding Story is about a boy who submerges himself into an incredible fantasy adventure inside a mysterious book where the protagonist must fight off an evil force called The Nothing. Nobody can talk about the NeverEnding Story, without mentioning the iconic scene where Atreyu's horse dies a slow and emotional death in the Swamp of Sadness. Find out how each host was affected by this sad and moving scene. To Kara's dismay, Laura reveals that she has a huge issue with Falkor's look which would make a coveted ride on the Luck Dragon a little bit complicated. Kara stumbles upon an alternative way of mounting Falkor in a moment that Laura had to pay Kara to keep in the episode.Parenting sure has changed these days and Bastian's dad is a prime example of how parents used to erroneously guide their children! Enter, the cringy “suck it up” talk. The movie definitely dips into the 80s and 90s “us vs them” parents/kids dynamic. Laura isn't looking forward to getting into middle age and finding that all the things she's doing right now ended up being mistakes, but that seems to be the natural progression of history, right? The hosts also discuss the three child stars of the show and notice they all have something in common. Here's what the cast of The NeverEnding Story, including every girl's first crush Atreyu, is up to now.SHOULD THEY WATCH IT?Kara: Yes! She loved watching it with her son. The story is not only engaging, but it opens up the door to have conversations about mental health and grief (if parents are interested in that). Laura: Yes! She has a much greater appreciation for it than she did as a child.POTENTIAL ISSUES:There are scary moments and imagery that might be too much for young children. The sphinx statues show nudity. Bastian has some behavioral issues, including skipping school and staying out late. The grief theme is throughout the movie, though not always apparent. If your child is sensitive to the topic of grief and loss, you might want to consider the impact of these themes on their emotional well-being.Old EnoughIn Old Enough!, Japanese toddlers run errands, navigate subways and otherwise adult their way through life.Laura and Kara observe a definite cultural divide here: Laura's daughter requires company when she goes to the bathroom. Kara recalls getting a lot of flak from other parents when she posted pictures of her son helping her fry bacon and pressure wash her porch. After watching this show, the ladies reflect on whether a little extra independence is in order for American toddlers. Laura puts on her therapist hat, discussing the importance of guiding children through challenges rather than solving problems for them. Listen to find out the bene

Working with aggressive dogs takes a special set of skills. It's also a common misconception that dogs with severe behavioral issues just need "obedience" training and to "listen better" and this is simply not true.
