The worst thing about addiction, and I think mental illness, is that you don't know how bad you are. The denial part of it is what keeps so many people from getting well.” (01:21) (Candy)“When I first got into recovery, I was so grim and so serious. And I tell people, we don't have a hot and cold faucet for feelings - the good feelings and the bad feelings. So, when we want to try to get rid of the bad feelings, we just turn off that one faucet. When we do that, we're leaving out all the joy and when you begin to finally start to walk through the stuff you're so frightened of, or embarrassed about, or ashamed, you recover the joy and the laughter.” (06:03) (Jeanie)“Servant leadership goes back to the spiritual person that I am. Flowers.” (11:53) (Claudia)“It was so hard because I just felt like when I think about pacemakers, I think about grandpa with his cane. And I know that there are people that are in their twenties that need a pacemaker because their heart is not working well. But usually that's somebody with significant heart disease or possibility of having a heart attack. And feeling that, it just stopped me dead in my tracks because I thought, ‘How is this possible?' It was so debilitating mentally for me.” (16:31) (Claudia)“Finally being a client of J. Flowers and being able to express what it really feels like to get this kind of care makes it more amazing to do this job. I feel like I can talk about it even better now because I've had my own experience.” (19:36) (Claudia)Resources MentionedJFlowers Health Institute – https://jflowershealth.com/JFlowers Health Institute Contact – (713) 783-6655Subscribe on your favorite player: https://understanding-the-human-condition.captivate.fm/listen Claudia's LinkedIn –

My patients were gaining weight, developing complications from obesity, and we needed to find, together, interventions that would help them.” (03:11) (Dr. Jon)“There have been some studies, including one in the New England Journal of Medicine that said, ‘in the next ten or fifteen years practically everyone in America could be overweight or obese.' And we're already at sixty percent when you count overweight and obese. Forty percent of Americans are clinically obese. I'm not using that term in the pejorative sense that it's sometimes used. This is really a crisis and epidemic that we're facing.” (04:40) (Dr. Jon)“The rates of childhood overweight and obesity are increasing even faster than adults, which is terrifying. Once the body gets to that space, the body sets at that space. A dirty secret is that diet and exercise, once you're already in the clinically obese realm, only really lead to about five percent body mass loss.” (08:01) (Dr. Jon)“I'm so excited right now. I wasn't practicing at the time, but I really feel like right now in obesity medicine with all the new interventions, it must be what it was like for a psychiatrist practicing at the dawn of Prozac. There are some fantastic, new, and really game changing interventions.” (13:52) (Dr. Jon)“BMI is controversial and much maligned, but it's still what defines overweight and obesity. Things were good. Things were bad. There were lessons learned and to learn from our elders in a sense.” (05:33) (Dr. Galati)“First of all, a lot of people don't know where their liver is. I'll be examining them and I'll pull their gown up and I'll be palpating around and they'll ask, ‘What are you doing up there?' And so, that's a big point that people don't even know where their liver is and so if they have a pain in their side, they don't know that it could be their liver or their gallbladder. The liver is the largest organ, next to the skin, and the unique thing about that, first of all, is it is involved in over two hundred different biochemical reactions. It does a lot of stuff.” (06:41) (Dr. Galati)“Alcohol accounts for about forty-nine percent of all cirrhosis, which means fifty percent is due to obesity, and fatty liver, Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, autoimmune disease, too much copper, too much iron in your blood. So, if you understand that Hepatitis is inflammation of the liver and Cirrhosis is scarring of the liver, you're not automatically deemed an alcoholic or bad person. It comes out of this stigma.” (09:58) (Dr. Galati)“We have, over the last ten years at Houston Methodist Hospital, become the number one liver transplant program - or number two depending on the month and different volumes - which is a Herculean effort to go from the lower third to the top, beating out household names like Cornell, Mount Saini, UCLA, Chicago, Miami.” (23:54) (Dr. Galati)“There is something that's been around since the earliest days of transplant called ‘The Six Month Rule,' which basically says if you have Alcohol Use Disorder - you are an alcoholic, you have cirrhosis - bad boy. You have to sit in time-out for six months until you go to recovery, abstinence, you get a sponsor, you work your way through a 12-Step Program, you have proof of abstinence. Then come back and talk to us and we'll talk about transplant.” (29:17) (Dr. Galati)Resources MentionedJFlowers Health Institute – https://jflowershealth.com/JFlowers Health Institute Contact – (713) 783-6655Subscribe on your favorite player: https://understanding-the-human-condition.captivate.fm/listen Dr. Joseph Galati's LinkedIn – https://www.linkedin.com/in/drjoegalati/Dr. Galati's Website – https://drjoegalati.com/Dr. Galati's Facebook – https://www.facebook.com/drjoegalati/Dr. Galati's Instagram – https://www.instagram.com/drjoegalati/Dr. Galati's YouTube – https://www.youtube.com/user/TexasLiverdotcomDr. Galati's Twitter – https://twitter.com/drjoegalatiDr. Galati's Book – https://www.amazon.com/Eating-Yourself-Sick-Obesity-Diabetes/dp/159932914XTexas Medical Center – https://www.tmc.edu/Liver Specialists of Texas – https://www.texasliver.com/**The views and opinions expressed by our guests are those of the individual and do not necessarily reflect those of J. So, if we're trying to zero in on sleep and isolate those nutrients, we can't really control other nutrients we need for other life functions. So, it can be tricky to try to zero in on one food because there isn't really the science of just focusing on one thing.” (08:21) (Moe Schlachter)“I would say you should cut off caffeine by about 1pm or so if you're finding that caffeine is keeping you up. Caring for someone with any chronic disease or mental illness can take an emotional and even physical toll on caretakers. And many times, that investment can lead caregivers to lose sight of their own needs in the service of another's care.As a clinician and former caregiver, Dr. Frank Chen discusses how family members can be intrinsic and critical parts of a loved one's diagnosis and treatment journey. Also, support and coping strategies are needed if everyone is to effectively emerge throughout the process. In this podcast, we discuss the definition of compassion fatigue, and how it affects caregivers – professional and family members – and what the caregiver can do to take good care of themselves.Key Takeaways01:27 – Dr. Frank Chen joins the show to share what drew him to the field of psychiatry and his difficult experience seeking help for a member of his family12:57 – Compassion fatigue explained18:39 – Shay opens up about her own experience acting as a caregiver in her family20:41 – Advice on caring for yourself as a caregiver27:14 – The value of speaking to a therapist and other practical self-care acts you can do34:13 – Shay thanks Dr. Frank for sharing his storyTweetable Quotes“There's a very regimented path forward when you get into Med School. And it always seemed like it was very difficult to break away from that. And I think that part of this unconscious conflict that I experienced was probably what ended up attracting me to the field of psychiatry - to kind of conquer this conflict, if you will. I know now that in order to conquer this conflict, you get a good therapist.” (05:43) (Dr. Frank Chen)“This is why I encourage anyone who has these intrapsychic conflicts to start seeing a therapist. Having someone out there to help you navigate through those struggles and know what's norm and what's not norm may build a much more secure self.” (07:14) (Dr. Frank Chen)“When you stop taking care of yourself, you may actually not be doing your family member any justice in terms of trying to help them, because you're gonna get depressed. You're gonna end up getting anxious. You're gonna end up not being able to help.” (13:51) (Dr. Frank Chen)“Being a caretaker takes a toll.” (17:55) (Dr. Frank Chen)“So, that's really important to be able to recognize other people not trying to be critical of you but to give you some warning that, ‘Hey, you're not acting like yourself.' And be able to take that feedback and not get so defensive about it but do something about it.” (26:31) (Dr. Frank Chen)“You wouldn't try to fix a car with black smoke coming out of the tailpipe. And you want to give that family who's been struggling the right tools so they can thrive.” (22:30) (Dr. Louise) “Ninety-seven percent of the work upfront for an intervention is done with those people [family and friends] because the person who is experiencing the substance use disorder, or the mental health disorder, or the chronic pain, or the process disorder, they're going to keep doing what they're doing until these people change how they behave.” (25:31) (Dr. Louise) Resources MentionedJFlowers Health Institute – https://jflowershealth.com/ (https://jflowershealth.com/) JFlowers Health Institute Contact – (713) 783-6655 Subscribe on your favorite player: https://understanding-the-human-condition.captivate.fm/listen (https://understanding-the-human-condition.captivate.fm/listen) Dr. Louise's Website – https://www.allaboutinterventions.com/ (https://www.allaboutinterventions.com/) Dr. Louise's LinkedIn – https://www.linkedin.com/in/drlouisestanger/ (https://www.linkedin.com/in/drlouisestanger/) Dr. Louise's YouTube Video – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hDf5262P7I8 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hDf5262P7I8) Dr. Louise's Number – (619) 507-1699 Look for Dr. Louise's Interview on Katie Couric's Podcast ‘Next Question' – https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/next-question-with-katie-couric/id1134154895 (https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/next-question-with-katie-couric/id1134154895) Dr. Louise's Books: Falling Up – https://www.amazon.com/Falling-Up-Renewal-Louise-Stanger/dp/0996761403/ref=asc_df_0996761403/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=312111908051&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=6892952231872809156&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9004216&hvtargid=pla-568553026293&psc=1...
