Join the First Responder Leadership Mastermind: firstresponderwellness.co/mastermind   146 - From Felonies to the Front Lines: One Woman's Journey Through Addiction and Recovery Work What does it really take to go from a stolen car, a drug addiction, and a revolving-door relationship with jail — to 14 years of sobriety and a career saving other people's lives?

In this episode of the First Responder Wellness Podcast, host Conrad Weaver sits down with Casey Burley, a recovery advocate and Narcan trainer who has been in recovery since September 14, 2011. Casey's story is not a tidy redemption arc. It is raw, honest, and deeply relevant to every first responder who has ever wondered whether the people they keep encountering on their worst calls are capable of change.

Casey takes us through her journey from early drug use at age 16 — starting with meth — through years of incarceration, to a treatment program where one counselor's relentless belief in her became the turning point that changed everything. She talks about what recovery housing actually looks like, why isolation is one of the most dangerous forces in addiction, and what it feels like to respond to overdoses and deaths in the same community you once nearly left permanently.

 In this conversation, you'll hear:
Why Casey says people in recovery are not a lost cause — and what first responders need to see to believe it
The reality of fentanyl and carfentanil in every drug on the street today, and why everyone needs to know how to use Narcan
What happens inside a recovery home after someone dies — and the quiet, careful work Casey does for the family left behind
How self-labeling as an addict is just as destructive as being labeled by others, and how that changes in recovery
A direct challenge to first responders: come to a recovery event and see the people who are making it

This episode is for first responders, law enforcement officers, counselors, recovery workers, families of people struggling with addiction, and anyone who has ever wondered whether it is worth fighting for someone who keeps falling down.

The answer Casey gives is yes. Every time. Because somebody fought for her — and she never forgot it.

He followed the far closely, especially as his father served in the U.S. Merchant Marine.Smith graduated from high school in 1946 and eventually decided to enter the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy on Long Island. By the time his years as a cadet and in training were complete, the Korean War was breaking out on the other side of the world. He was assigned to the USS Meredith Victory, which would soon be on its way to war.In this edition of Veterans Chronicles, Smith explains how much responsibility brand new junior third mates like him were given in navigating ships. He also shares the harrowing story of being the last ship in a convoy headed for the Inchon Landing during a fierce typhoon that nearly knocked him into the sea. However, the USS Meredith Victory is best known for conducting the largest single-ship humanitarian evacuation in history - at Hungnam in North Korea in December 1950 after Chinese forces flooded across the border and temporarily forced the U.S. to retreat.Smith, who is the last surviving crew member of the Meredith Victory, describes how the evacuation took place with the Chinese just a mile or two way, the very difficult conditions on board, and how more than 14,000 Koreans were eventually brought to safety and freedom.

James W. Burley, APX Data Base/Report System James W. Burley is the programmer of Data Base/Report System, which was sold by Atari Program Exchange beginning with the Summer 1982 APX catalog. It was catalog number 20134 with a price of $22.95. APX sold it for about a year, through the Summer 1983 catalog. APX awarded Data Base/Report System first prize for new software in the "Business & Professional Applications/Personal Finance & Record Keeping" category: for that, James was awarded an Atari Star plaque and $2000 prize. (He received the plaque, but says he never received the money.) The software may have also been sold by Main Street Publishing. Here's what the APX catalog had to say: Data Base/Report System by James W. Burley Recommended for experienced data base users/Written in BASIC and machine language If you've ever used a data base manager on a large computer system, you'll appreciate the many features of DATA BASE/REPORT SYSTEM. This general-purpose system for ATARI 800 Home Computers creates and maintains records having up to ten units of information ("fields"), with a maximum field length of 100 characters and a maximum record length of 255 characters. The total number of records you can store varies with record key size, a key being the unique identifier for each record) and available computer memory. Generally, you can store about 1300 records having a five-character key on a system with 40K of memory. You use the main program to create a new file; add, update, and remove records; sort the file; and print reports. Auxiliary programs reorganize the data files to free unused diskette space; redefine the file by adding fields, modifying field sizes, or changing field headings; delete old files; and print special reports. ... These and other features make DATA BASE/REPORT SYSTEM a really versatile data base management system for your ATARI 800 Home Computer. REVIEW COMMENTS: You need some data base knowledge to use the program; it's a bit complex, but all the features are worthwhile. The print formatting and file reorganization features are very useful. The sort and search routines, written in assembly language, work quickly. In 1983, Antic magazine featured the program as one of the "Ten Best from APX". In 2024, Wade at the Inverse ATASCII podcast did a deep dive into Data Base/Report System: check the show notes for the link to that review, which includes dozens of screenshots, sample print output, and information about the database's file format. Wade gave the software a rating of 5 out of 8. As of this recording, the Atari community doesn't yet have a scan of the APX manual for Data Base/Report System: if you have a copy, let me know, or scan it and upload it to Internet Archive. The Main Street Publishing version — both disk and manual — are also not preserved. This interview took place on May 22, 2026. STUDY AN ONLINE COURSE WITH LOCKIE: https://emotionalhorsemanship.com/online-courses In this episode of Horse First, Lockie Phillips sits down with Canadian horse trainer Remy Burley, a specialist in operant conditioning and clicker training. The conversation begins with identity, representation, and the reality that who we are inevitably shapes how we move through the horse world. Together, Lockie and Remy explore the idea that the personal is political, what it means to be visible within a community, and why representation continues to matter. From there, they turn their attention to clicker training and operant conditioning, a field that has become surprisingly controversial despite its growing influence on modern horse training. Rather than debating camps and labels, this episode explores the practical realities of training horses, where different approaches overlap, where they diverge, and what both trainers have learned from their own experiences working with horses and people. This is a conversation about identity, training, belonging, and the importance of staying curious enough to learn from those whose paths differ from our own. Being a sinner was the only qualification Matthew had for joining the disciples The only thing that qualifies us to be followers of Jesus is that we are sinners who need grace. Why does Jesus eat with tax collectors and sinners? Jesus is the incarnation of God's mercy. Following Jesus is not heroic, it's surrender. Jesus still eats with sinners today. No one is worthy to come to the Communion Table Jesus has made us worthy by His sacrifice Consider the worth or real value of Jesus' sacrifice for us.Sermon Questions In the choice of Matthew, what is surprising or offensive to you? How does Jesus respond to the Pharisees' indirect criticism? What would have been different about your life if Jesus had come only to call "righteous" people instead of "sinners"? Are you willing to share openly about those things in your life that qualify you to follow Jesus? Does anything disqualify you from following Jesus? How would you respond if someone said you were unworthy to come to the Communion Table? When you receive communion what helps you to focus on the real worth and value of what Jesus did for you on the cross? What if the biggest barrier to student success isn't curriculum, funding, or leadership - it's that we're burning out the very people holding it all together? In this episode, we sit down with Charlie Burley - The Teachers' Health Coach - to get real about the burnout crisis hiding in plain sight across our schools. Charlie shares the moment his own breakdown became his calling, and why fixing teacher wellbeing can't just mean a yoga session at the next INSET day.Charlie Burley is a former primary school teacher turned health coach, author, and founder of the Building Better Balance programme. After burning out in year five of his teaching career, navigating chronic stress, anxiety, and panic attacks, he retrained as a nutritionist and mental health coach and has spent the last seven years working with individual teachers, school leaders, and multi-academy trusts to rebuild wellbeing from the ground up. His diagnostic framework, the Six C's, gives schools a clear picture of where their culture is thriving and where it's quietly crumbling. In this episode, we cover:- Why teachers are burning out - the personal, professional, and systemic factors that pile up unseen- The Six C's framework - Care, Clarity, Capacity, Competence, Connection and Contribution, and how Charlie uses them to diagnose wellbeing across a whole school- Staff before students - Charlie's (perhaps controversial) argument that putting school staff first is the only way to genuinely serve children and families- The Sunday Scaries - what's actually happening in your brain on Sunday evenings, and Charlie's practical three-step approach: Calm, Clarity, Certainty- Marginal gains for mental health - why five minutes before you walk through the school gate might matter more than any wellness programme- Coaching in education and why it's normalised in sport and business but still underused in schools, and what changes when you bring it in- The community cure - Robin Dunbar's research on loneliness, why connection is the first chapter of Charlie's new book, and why belonging might be the most underrated lever in educationIf you're a teacher running on empty, a leader wondering why your wellbeing initiatives aren't landing, or anyone who cares about what education could look like when the people inside schools are actually looked after - this one is for you. Charlie brings the lived experience, the research, and the practical tools. No toxic positivity. No empty platitudes. Just an honest conversation about what it actually takes to rewrite wellbeing in schools."If you put your staff first, they will take care of everything."Chapters:00:00 Introduction & what's been going on at Edufuturists03:00 Meet Charlie Burley: from Year 6 teacher to health coach05:30 Charlie's burnout story: self-worth, grief, and throwing himself into work10:15 Why teacher stress cascades down to students12:20 The Six C's framework: diagnosing wellbeing across a whole school18:00 Why coaching is still underused in education21:30 Crisis leadership vs. strategic wellbeing: the difference that matters24:20 Staff first: the case for putting teachers before targets29:15 Practical wellbeing: creating space in a packed day34:30 Is teaching uniquely stressful? Text Me Here!!!I won't lie, when I saw the topic this week was going to be on ministering, I wanted to go and hide under my blanket. It was another thing I'd have to add to my "get better at doing this, let alone at all" list!Anyone else have one of those? Just me?I apologize for a little bit of my rambling thoughts, but I hope the main point I do get across is... Anglotopia Podcast: Episode 90 – The Real Yorkshire – A Blue Badge Guide’s Insider Guide to England’s Biggest County

In this episode of the Anglotopia Podcast, Jonathan Thomas sits down with Tim Barber, Yorkshire Blue Badge guide and founder of Real Yorkshire Tours, for an in-depth traveler's guide to one of England's most captivating and varied regions. Tim brings over a decade of guiding experience and a background in geography, geology, and marketing to the conversation, explaining why Yorkshire — at 6,000 square miles — deserves far more than a single day stopover between London and Edinburgh. The pair cover everything from the dramatic differences between the Yorkshire Dales and the North York Moors, to the best way to experience York Minster, to why the Yorkshire Wolds is the region's best-kept secret. Tim also unpacks his hugely popular All Creatures Great and Small filming locations tour, explains what the Blue Badge qualification actually means for travelers, shares his personal recommendations for how many days to spend and where to stay, and offers practical advice for Americans planning their first Yorkshire adventure — including the one language misunderstanding that left him without his lunch. Always look for it when booking a guide. Yorkshire is England's largest region at 6,000 square miles, with more landscape variety than almost anywhere else in the country — from wild Pennine moorland and rolling Dales to a hundred miles of coastline and the little-known chalk uplands of the Yorkshire Wolds. If you only have one day in the countryside, Tim recommends the Yorkshire Dales over the North York Moors — not because the Moors aren't spectacular, but because the Dales offer slightly more varied scenery and you'll still get a taste of moorland driving over the tops. York Minster is the largest Gothic cathedral in Northern Europe and contains 65% of all medieval stained glass in England — saved during the Civil War by a Yorkshireman who threatened his troops with death if they touched it. The All Creatures Great and Small new series has overtaken Downton Abbey in US viewing figures on PBS Masterpiece — and Tim's filming locations tour takes in Grassington (Darrowby), Helen's Farm, the church where James and Helen married, and more. The Yorkshire Wolds — a chalk upland area east of York — is Tim's top hidden gem recommendation: barely known even to locals, with picture-postcard villages, chalk streams, and stunning dry valleys almost entirely free of tourists. Americans typically underestimate how much time they need in Yorkshire. Tim's ideal recommendation is five days, covering York, the Yorkshire Dales, the North York Moors and coast, Fountains Abbey, and a stately home. York makes the best base for a Yorkshire visit, with easy rail and road access to almost every corner of the region — though Harrogate is a great alternative for those focused on the Dales and All Creatures tours. Haworth and the Brontë Parsonage offer a very different experience from the open Dales — a darkened millstone grit industrial village where Tim drives clients up onto the moorland tops so they can feel the wind and understand where Wuthering Heights came from. Jonathan is personally planning a two-to-three day Yorkshire visit after completing his Hadrian's Wall walk this summer, and Tim recommends Helmsley, Rievaulx Abbey, and Whitby as excellent options accessible by public transport from York. Soundbites "I won a big pitch and I just couldn't get excited by it. I came home on Friday and said, I think I'm done. She said, well, you're 48, you can't retire yet — we'd better find you a job then." — Tim on the moment he decided to leave marketing. "I take people to absolutely beautiful places, we have a traditional lunch in a country pub, they drop off at the end of the day, I get lots of thanks and a tip, I drive home and pinch myself and think — have I really been at work?" — Tim on loving his second career. "She just sort of said, I just can't believe it. It's more beautiful than I ever thought it would be. To see a reaction like that, where the landscape had created that kind of emotion — that's a pretty special thing." — Tim on a lifelong James Herriot fan finally seeing the Dales. "The history of York is the history of England. You can actually do it all on foot. You don't have to jump on trains or tubes. A lot of the stuff is within the city walls." — Tim on what makes York so extraordinary. "65 % of all the medieval stained glass in England is in York Minster. Because during the Reformation, a Yorkshireman told his parliamentary troops: you do not touch York Minster, under pain of death." — Tim on how Yorkshire saved its own history. "You'd be driving down little tiny country lanes in the Dales that are just difficult to pass on. You just couldn't get a 55-seat coach down them." — Tim on why the All Creatures filming locations can only be done in a small vehicle. "I knew there was a Yorkshire Terrier and I'd heard of a Yorkshire Pudding — but I can't believe what you've got to offer here." — a typical American tour operator reaction on first seeing the region, as recounted by Tim. "Yorkshire men have more call centres here than anywhere else in England because people want to talk to somebody with a trustworthy voice who tells them how it is and is honest and straightforward." — Tim on the Yorkshire character. "She said she'd just have chips — so I booked a restaurant that did pub grub. And about quarter to twelve she said, could we pull up at this garage? She came out with a bag of crisps. And I suddenly realised I wasn't going to get any lunch." — Tim on the chips vs crisps language trap. "People spend five or six days in London, five or six days in Edinburgh — and they always say, I wish I'd spent longer up here. Yorkshire feels a little bit more real and authentic." — Tim on why Americans should slow down and give Yorkshire more time. They collaborate and oversee scores of trials done in a variety of locations, including our research farm in Burley, Idaho, with contract research organizations and universities. The success rate for these projects shows an extremely bright future, as RAM (redox active molecule) technology is a universal benefit to all growers, regardless of crop or region they are farmed.Gillette and Das are both extremely positive about RDX-N®, which has undergone more than a decade of research and fieldwork, and provides up to 50 percent optimization of nitrogen without any performance loss.

Up next on The Art of Teaching is Charlie Burley. Charlie is a former primary school teacher who knows, from lived experience, the pace, pressure and emotional weight that often come with life in the classroom. After feeling the toll that the profession can take on personal health and well-being, Charlie made a significant shift in his own career, choosing to focus on helping educators look after themselves with the same care they give their students every day. Today, he is a qualified nutritionist, health coach, and the founder of The Teachers' Health Coach Ltd. Through his work, Charlie supports teachers and school staff to build sustainable habits that strengthen energy, resilience and overall wellbeing. His approach brings together practical strategies around nutrition, movement and mental health, helping educators manage stress, improve focus and find a healthier rhythm both inside and outside the classroom. Charlie is also the host of the Rewriting Wellbeing Podcast, where he explores the realities of educator wellbeing and shares thoughtful conversations designed to help teachers flourish in a demanding profession. In 2025, he released his book Healthy Habits for Teacher Life, a practical guide that helps educators embed small but powerful habits into their daily routines. At the heart of Charlie's work is a belief that resonates deeply with many teachers: educators deserve to thrive, not merely keep going. When teachers take care of their own well-being, they are far better placed to sustain their passion, their energy and their impact for the long run. Here is my conversation with Charlie Burley.

Sometimes opportunity presents itself during challenging circumstances.  The downturn in the agricultural economy may be one example.Tom Haase with TN Ag works with growers on their crop nutrition, including Redox Bio-Nutrients technology. He also grows crops near Albion, Nebraska. With crop prices struggling, input costs high and the likely future for basic fertilizer is only trending upward, Tom emphasizes improving soil health, doing more with less and reallocating dollars for the biggest benefit. Tell me your thoughts about how best to achieve this.He recently visited Redox Bio-Nutrients headquarters in Burley, Idaho, for intensive meetings on how plant charge balance and RAM (Redox Active Molecule) technology are crucial for successful farming. One product that has the attention of Tom and many is RDX-N®, which provides game-changing nitrogen optimization.

Tonight on The Pipes Magazine Radio Show, we welcome Big John. He is a micro-blender and the creator of the Niall of Nine pipe tobacco line. His journey into pipe smoking began when he inherited his great-grandfather's pipes, an experience that sparked a lasting connection to the hobby. Today, he's known for crafting distinctive micro-blends that often feature rare and unusual components, including Syrian Latakia and Cuban cigar leaf. Several of his blends draw inspiration from the themes and imagery of J.R.R. Tolkien's The Hobbit. Another notable mixture, Aberdeen Extinction, showcases an eclectic range of tobaccos: 2015 Virginias processed as Perique, 2016 McClelland Perique, 2014 Black Cavendish, 2001 medium brown Burley, and 2018 Cyprian Latakia. At the top of the show in Pipe Parts, Brian will go over an article about the iconic Connecticut shade tobacco. The industry has all but vanished as demand dwindled and land was developed, leaving Dwight Arnold — on a farm just over the Massachusetts border — as the last grower of the traditional shade-grown leaf prized for premium cigar wrappers. We also have news about nicotine pouch vending machines.

Download The Conjugate Method: Introduction to Bench Press Training (E‑Book) here Tom & Burley delve into the intricacies of bench pressing, focusing on the methods employed at Westside Barbell. It covers the max effort, dynamic effort, and repeated effort training methods, emphasizing the importance of technique, safety, and the role of various training parameters. The hosts also address common questions regarding bench pressing, including the significance of leg drive, the rotation of accessory exercises, and the differences between raw and geared bench training. Takeaways: The intent of max effort days is to increase strength. Max effort training focuses on absolute strength development. Dynamic effort training enhances rate of force development. Safety in max effort training is crucial to prevent injuries. Leg drive is often overstated in its importance for bench pressing. Accessory exercises should be rotated every three weeks for optimal results. Velocity standards are essential in dynamic effort training. Repeated effort methods focus on building work capacity and hypertrophy. The volume and intensity differ significantly between max and dynamic effort days. Understanding the differences between raw and geared bench training is important.  Connect with Westside Barbell: Website: westside-barbell.com Instagram:  @WestsideBarbellOfficial     Studio Sponsor: Dollamur Sport Surfaces
