Chicago singer, songwriter and astrologist Akenya kicked off Pitchfork Music Festival's final day on Sunday, starting the Green Stage's festivities strong. Although she took the stage with fellow Chicago artist Noname in 2022, this was Akenya's first solo performance at the festival. Originally aiming to release her debut album Moon In the 4th in May, Akenya now says the release date is on divine timing but hopes to share more new music before 2025. In the works for nine years, the album will tie into her astrologer roots and explore the transformation of personal experience into music. Backstage at Pitchfork Music Festival, Vocalo's Nudia Hernandez spoke with Akenya about the upcoming album, her thoughts on Scorpios and working as an independent artist. This interview was edited and produced by Morgan Ciocca. Keep up with Akenya on Instagram @akenyamusic.

Chicago singer and multi-instrumentalist Akenya is gearing up for the release of her debut album ‘Moon in the 4th,' drawing upon her deep connection to astrology as a second-generation astrologer. You've probably heard Akenya's music already, on projects with Chance the Rapper, Smino, Noname or Saba — but she finally steps into the spotlight on her debut solo project, which she says is both long overdue and right on time. The project, led by single “Hades Moon,” invites listeners into her inner world, exploring how she has transformed her life experiences into music. Akenya sat down with Vocalo host Bekoe to discuss her musical journey, challenges as an independent artist and the anticipated release of ‘Moon in the 4th,' which is set for release in spring 2024. This interview was produced by Bekoe and edited by Blake Hall. Keep up with Kenya by following her on Instagram @akenyamusic.

Akenya is a singular talent in the Chicago music community. She commands the stage like a combination of James Brown, Billie Holiday, and a hungry MC conquering a cypher. She has collaborated both with Chicago hip hop stalwarts including Chance the Rapper, Noname Gyspy, Mick Jenkins, Eryn Allen Kane, Donnie Trumpet, and the O'My’s, as well as performed alongside contemporary luminaries like Esperanza Spalding, Fred Hersch, Vijay Iyer, Jason Moran, Luciana Souza, and Dave Holland. She is preparing to drop her first LP, titled Moon in the 4th, this year. Spring is in the air and with it comes a new mix entitled "Spring Fling" Spring is the time where new relations really begin to blossom. Got anybody in mind you want to 'Fling' with this 'Spring'? Included in the mix are some tracks worth mentioning. First off the mix starts off with one of the many freebies Scott Wozniak recently gave away via his promodj page. I've been a big fan of Scott's work for quite some time now and it was hard not to include all the gems he recently dished out so I selected two of them, the 2nd been him and Master Kevs bootleg of Stevie Wonders - My Cherie Amour. I also have included some tracks from fellow producers on the Mixed Signals Music imprint, "Like a Dream" by DJ Romain ft Akenya, "Cuz I Know Now" by The Playerz & last but not least my latest release on Mixed Signal Music featuring vocals from the lovely and talented Soph-Eye Richard entitled "Reach Out". Reach Out will have a full release later on this summer so keep and eye out for that. For now you can purchase the original mix on traxsource. And speaking of fellow producers, I have included as well a track from some friends of mine from my hometown of Montreal, Canada. The track is called "Montreal Strip Club" and is brought to you by Ceasar Bass Romero ft Marty & Steven Taylor. Marty & Steven Taylor have also done a remix of an upcoming release of mine called "Reasonable Volume" but you won't get to hear it until close to the release date which is sometime in June. Enjoy the mix and feel free to share!
