In this conversation we talk to Santi Elijah Holley about his recently published book An Amerikan Family: The Shakurs and the Nation They Created.  A history of the political family that included Tupac, Assata, Afeni, Dr. Mutulu, Salahdeen, Lumumba, Zayd and many others. What does it mean to take the name Shakur? What were some of the key relationships and sites of politicization for these folks? Holley's book gets into many of these questions, and examines the radical organizing and political activity of many of the Shakurs and of their comrades like Sekou Odinga and Bilal Sunni-Ali.  There are aspects of this book we appreciated as there's a lot of important history here that gets brought into one place. These figures are often looked at in isolation, in a depoliticized context, as icons or simulacra. In other places we read about them as individual figures in histories of formations like the Black Panther Party or the Republic of New Afrika. So we appreciated seeing them discussed in relation to one another and some of the events and people who shaped their political development. As you will see in this discussion both Josh and I also have our criticisms of this book and how it presents this history. As usual, we do not debate with the author here, but we do ask multiple critical questions about aspects of the book that we felt either did not do justice to the legacy of people being examined or do not help people see the New Afrikan Independence Movement as a living struggle that people still engage today in a variety of ways in various organizations. As always, we welcome further dialogue on that from folks who are involved in those movements if they wish to engage with us. We will also link some of our other discussions about that history and with people who struggle in the tradition of New Afrikan independence today. Most importantly today we want to uplift Baba Sekou Odinga who features prominently in this book, and prominently in the history of Black Liberation struggle in this country. He was recently hospitalized and has been released to a rehabilitation facility, but he needs our support. We are not going to plug our patreon this episode and instead ask that folks contribute to this fund for Immediate Relief Support for Sekou Odinga Other related links: Sekou Odinga episode Jamal Joseph episode  Claude Marks episode  Dhoruba bin Wahad episode  Jalil Muntaqim episodes 1, 2  Thandisizwe Chimurenga and Yusef “Bunchy” Shakur on Sanyika Shakur Kamau Franklin and Kali Akuno Kamau Franklin on Liberated Zones Theory   Stop Cop City discussions: 1  & 2  Free The Land! In commemorating Black August, we commemorate the struggle of those who have fought before us and faced violent repercussions from the state. We uplift the revolutionary history of the Black working class and its fundamental position in forging and leading the struggle for liberation for all. And we recommit ourselves to the struggle for Black Liberation and for the freedom of all political prisoners. When I think of political prisoners, and when I think of those who have relentlessly committed themselves to Black Liberation, I always think of Assata Shakur. From Assata's story, we are able to learn what it means to be motivated by a deep love for the people and the struggle for freedom—and what it means to embody a determined and unbreakable spirit in the face of crackdowns and government repression designed to stifle and destroy the movement. Account after account from Assata's comrades and fellow revolutionaries describe Assata as a light, a positive spirit who remained disciplined and committed to the struggle despite incredible hardships. Santi Elijah Holley joins Breht to discuss his book "An Amerikan Family: The Shakurs and the Nation They Created". For over fifty years, the Shakurs have inspired generations of activists, scholars, and music fans. Many people are only familiar with Assata Shakur, the popular author and thinker, living for three decades in Cuban exile; or the late rapper Tupac. But the branches of the Shakur family tree extend widely, and the roots reach into the most furtive and hidden depths of the underground. Whether founding one of the most notorious Black Panther chapters in the country, spearheading community-based healthcare, or engaging in armed struggle with systemic oppression, the Shakurs were at the forefront.   Drawing from hundreds of hours of personal interviews, historical archives, court records, transcripts, and other rare documents, An Amerikan Family tells the complete and often devastating story of Black America's long struggle for racial justice and the nation's covert and repressive tactics to defeat that struggle. It is the story of a small but determined community, taking extreme, unconventional, and often perilous measures in the quest for freedom.     Outro music: "LIFE" by Saba   Support Rev Left Radio: https://www.patreon.com/RevLeftRadio

An enlightening history of the rise and lasting impact of Black liberation groups in America, as seen through the Shakurs, one of the movement's most prominent and fiercely creative families, home to Tupac and Assata, and a powerful incubator for today's activism, scholarship, and artistry. They have been celebrated, glorified, and mythologized. They have been hailed as heroes, liberators, and freedom fighters. They have been condemned, pursued, imprisoned, exiled, and killed. But the true and complete story of the Shakur family—one of the most famous names in contemporary Black American history—has never been told. SANTI ELIJAH HOLLEY has reported for more than a decade on the intersection of culture, music, race, religion, and politics. His work has appeared in numerous national and international outlets, including The Atlantic, The New Republic, the Economist, the Guardian, the Los Angeles Times, and the Washington Post. Join Donna Murch and Barbara Ransby for a conversation about state violence, racial capitalism, and the Movement for Black Lives. This is a book launch event for Assata Taught Me: State Violence, Racial Capitalism, and the Movement for Black Lives by Donna Murch, available at Haymarketbooks.org. Drawing its title from one of America's foremost revolutionaries, this collection of thought-provoking essays by award-winning Panther scholar Donna Murch explores how social protest is challenging our current system of state violence and mass incarceration. “Donna Murch is one of the sharpest, most incisive, and elegant writers on racism, radicalism, and struggle today. In this collection of essays assessing the current contours of the contemporary movement against racism in the United States, Murch combines a historian's rigor with a cultural critic's insights and the passionate expression of someone deeply engaged with the politics, debates, and key questions confronting activists and organizers today. This is a smart and sophisticated book that should be read and studied by everyone in search of answers to the profound crises that continue to confront this country.”—Keeanga-Yamahtta Taylor, author of From #BlackLivesMatter to Black Liberation Get Assata Taught Me at Haymarket Books: https://www.haymarketbooks.org/books/1650-assata-taught-me ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Speakers: Donna Murch is an Associate Professor of History at Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey, and is the president of the New Brunswick chapter of the Rutgers AAUP-AFT. It's the 90's—Ramunda was at Langston University in Oklahoma and Derrick was 1,300 miles away at Bowie State University in Prince George's County, Maryland. While separated by geography, Ramunda and Derrick underwent similar transformations when they were introduced to Assata Shakur's autobiography and Huey Newton's autobiography, Revolutionary Suicide. Assata and Revolutionary Suicide, respectively, for Ramunda and Derrick, helped build their lifetime commitment to Black people and Black books. Their bookstore, MahoganyBooks, was founded in 2007 to meet the literary needs of readers nationwide in search of books written for, by, or about people of the African Diaspora. Ten years later, they opened their now world-famous physical location in Washington D.C. In this episode, we talk about the importance of Black history and dive into some of the formative moments of Black people's relationship to literacy here in America. We even cover how owning a bookstore is like being a cultural anthropologist and some current trends in publishing. This is the perfect companion podcast for last week's episode with Freddie Taylor and another wonderful way to celebrate Black History Month. We know you'll love this episode. This week I am joined by the ever inspiring generational healer, super mom, motherhood educator, decolonizer of spirituality, and apothecary Assata Dela Cruz!!! Assata shares her story about starting off her spiritual journey in very white, Wiccan spaces and how having her daughter inspired her to connect more with her rich Yoruba and Chahta ancestry and culture. Through this process she found power to demystify her ancestral practices and use them to decolonize white dominated spaces like the cottagecore movement. She not only does this important healing work for her daughter and family, but talks about how she has brought these generationally healing ideas to her business and community to help others feel empowered by their own story and ancestry. ABOUT ASSATA AND COTTAGECORE RISING: Owned by Assata Dela Cruz, Cottagecore Rising is an apothecary deeply rooted in fostering community through the appreciation and application of Yoruba and Chahta ancestral wisdom. In addition to organic herbs, extracts and oils for purchase, there are bi-weekly classes and workshops on holistic living, as well as private and group Bhakti yoga classes. Recognizing that sacred healing begins in the womb, Assata also offers holistic birth and postpartum support as a doula, breastfeeding counselor and childbirth educator. Cottagecore is a movement fostering the idea of living a simple rural lifestyle. Inspired by cultivating this simple life in harmony with nature, Cottagecore Rising was created with the intention of fostering a passionate spirit of resistance within the wellness community. In rising against our current consumerist society, we can return to a world that values radical self care.
