Welcome to Songs of Experience: A Bob Dylan Podcast, where we explore the man and the music one song at a time. Henry brings in Professor Jon Lasser to teach us all about the early 60's Bob Dylan song that didn't see the light of day till the mid 90s, "John Brown." Learn more from Jon at @teachingbobdylan! Listen and follow along with the song here: John Brown Written by: Bob Dylan John Brown went off to war to fight on a foreign shore His mama sure was proud of him! He stood straight and tall in his uniform and all His mama's face broke out all in a grin “Oh son, you look so fine, I'm glad you're a son of mine You make me proud to know you hold a gun Do what the captain says, lots of medals you will get And we'll put them on the wall when you come home” As that old train pulled out, John's ma began to shout Tellin' ev'ryone in the neighborhood: “That's my son that's about to go, he's a soldier now, you know” She made well sure her neighbors understood She got a letter once in a while and her face broke into a smile As she showed them to the people from next door And she bragged about her son with his uniform and gun And these things you called a good old-fashioned war Oh! Good old-fashioned war! Then the letters ceased to come, for a long time they did not come They ceased to come for about ten months or more Then a letter finally came saying, “Go down and meet the train Your son's a-coming home from the war” She smiled and went right down, she looked everywhere around But she could not see her soldier son in sight But as all the people passed, she saw her son at last When she did she could hardly believe her eyes Oh his face was all shot up and his hand was all blown off And he wore a metal brace around his waist He whispered kind of slow, in a voice she did not know While she couldn't even recognize his face! Oh! Lord! Not even recognize his face “Oh tell me, my darling son, pray tell me what they done How is it you come to be this way?” He tried his best to talk but his mouth could hardly move And the mother had to turn her face away “Don't you remember, Ma, when I went off to war You thought it was the best thing I could do? I was on the battleground, you were home . . . acting proud You wasn't there standing in my shoes” “Oh, and I thought when I was there, God, what am I doing here? I'm a-tryin' to kill somebody or die tryin' But the thing that scared me most was when my enemy came close And I saw that his face looked just like mine” Oh! Lord! Just like mine! “And I couldn't help but think, through the thunder rolling and stink That I was just a puppet in a play And through the roar and smoke, this string is finally broke And a cannonball blew my eyes away” As he turned away to walk, his Ma was still in shock At seein' the metal brace that helped him stand But as he turned to go, he called his mother close And he dropped his medals down into her hand Copyright © 1963, 1968 by Warner Bros. Welcome to this week's episode of Trve. Cvlt. Pop! We hope you enjoy it. We're pretty sure you will, as this week Steve nad Gaz are joined by Pop, Collaborate & Listen's Dave Fensome to celebrate 30 year's since Alice in Chains recorded their now legendary MTV Unplugged session. From the troubles the band faced getting their shit together in the mid-90's; drug issues, the lack of touring, their fractured relationship with the press and each other, you'd have thought it almost impossible that Alice in Chains would be able to rework some of their finest ever material into the acoustic format. But on the 10th of April 1996 at the Majestic Theatre in Brooklyn, they did exactly that. Little did we know it would mark the end of the classic line up of the band, and a swansong from frontman Layne Stayley, and go on to be spoken about as once of the greatest ever live music broadcasts in history. We go through the entire story, from the troubles getting it made to the tragic aftermath, and give our take, track by track, of the entire performance. There's also chat about new music from Thundercat, Of the Trees, Slayyyter, The Scratch and The Math Rock Clangers... I mean Angine de Poitrine and live reports on President and Ignite.

Corey Morrissette is back with Sean and Todd for Part Two, and we're coming in hot. We pick up with a conversation about the radio industry — specifically how corporate ownership reshaped music selection and stripped DJs of the autonomy they once had to break new artists and take real risks. We talk about what it used to mean to hear a song on the radio for the first time, and how that experience has largely been replaced by pre-determined playlists built for engagement metrics rather than music discovery. On a more hopeful note, Corey shares his plans to host a show called Hoser Rock Hour on a community cooperative radio station — and honestly, the concept is exactly what radio needs more of. We also get into album-oriented rock stations and how AOR formats used to be the ones deciding which songs became singles, not the labels. It's a fascinating piece of music industry history that doesn't get talked about enough. From there we get into concert war stories, and this is where things really get going. We talk about seeing the Headpins live, with Darby Mills commanding a stage the way very few performers can. We swap memories of Pantera opening for Skid Row in Montreal — a lineup that, on paper, sounds almost too good to be true — and we get into the Killer Dwarfs, including a wild story about a vocal showdown between Sebastian Bach and Russell Dwarf that you genuinely have to hear to believe. These are the kinds of nights that remind you why live music matters. Then we take on one of rock's great what-ifs: was there actually a rivalry between Randy Rhoads and Eddie Van Halen? Two of the greatest guitarists of their generation, both rising at exactly the same time — it's the kind of question that sounds like it should have a dramatic answer. The reality might surprise you.Things take a genuinely unexpected turn when we get into Mary Shelley's writing group — yes, that Mary Shelley — and the remarkable fact that the circle of writers who gave us Frankenstein and Dracula were all in the same room, cooking up horror together. Corey also recommends Guillermo del Toro's Frankenstein film, which he found to be a faithful and beautifully crafted adaptation. It's one of those historical footnotes that sounds made up but absolutely isn't.We close things out with a look back at 1994 — one of the most stacked years in modern music history. Green Day, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, Nirvana's MTV Unplugged, Oasis, Smashing Pumpkins, R.E.M., Beck — we go through the releases and argue about which ones still hold up. Along the way, Seanorama drops an unexpected piece of history about Leonard Cohen's "Dance Me to the End of Love" that genuinely stopped the conversation cold. It's been an absolute blast having Corey on for both parts. Send us a textJoin Cheryl Lee - That Radio Chick on STILL ROCKIN' IT for news, reviews, music and interviews with some of our favourite Australian musiciansWhat happens when four road‑tested artists put ego aside, pick up acoustics, and chase the pure heart of a song? We sat down with Monstr—a supergroup featuring members from The Superjesus, The Screaming Jets, TaxiRide and Dragon—to unpack how they're reviving the spirit of MTV Unplugged while keeping it fiercely alive for today's crowds. From their first studio step with Tears in Heaven to bold turns on Mariah Carey and Rod Stewart, the band shows why a strong melody and a truthful lyric can survive any arrangement. We dig into the art of curation: balancing Seattle-era grit with pop brilliance, threading Bryan Adams' emotional punch through Live's cathartic anthems, and slipping mandolin and 12‑string textures into places you don't expect. Each choice serves the room, not the playlist. That means rotating setlists, key changes that respect the singer, and arrangements that let the chorus breathe. Along the way, we swap stories about the moments these songs scored in our lives—because music is a time machine—and how that memory shapes performance. When Jimi lights up recalling Bryan Adams, or Pete leans into Emotions with a grin, you can feel the crowd lean closer.Another spark here is community. Monstr brings together fanbases that rarely overlap, and that chemistry is electric. Screaming Jets shirts stand next to TaxiRide diehards, and by the end of the night, new favorites have been made on all sides. We talk Adelaide Fringe excitement, the thrill of sold‑out rooms, and why recording select cuts from the live list is the next smart move—capturing the unguarded takes that turned skeptics into believers. If you love acoustic performances, 90s rock, classic pop, Aussie music, or just want to hear great songs stripped to the bone and rebuilt with care, this one is for you.Listen now, share it with a friend who lived through the MTV Unplugged era, and leave a quick review to help more music lovers find the show. For the first time in our nearly eight years of being a podcast, we are presenting you coverage of a full length episode entirely on our YouTube Channel! This week is week two of our episodic series following every Pearl Jam tour year in chronological order, which means we're covering one of the most important years in their history - 1992. After a year of playing small venues and opening up for the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Pearl Jam's popularity was growing in 1992 mainly due to radio and music video networks playing Alive and Even Flow. But the band truly saw their fame escalate once their MTV Unplugged performance aired and the Jeremy music video hit rotation, the former of which happening two nights before this show in San Francisco. We'll get into deep discussion over how good the band sounded this night and Ed's on stage mannerisms featuring clips from the entire show. We'll also talk about some discoveries made when listening to this bootleg, including a Paul Simon song that was tagged, and perhaps the first hint at Yellow Ledbetter live. Massive versions of Black, Porch, Alive, Once and all of the favorites from the Ten era will dominate the conversation as well, and we pay tribute to a man deeply connected with San Francisco who we lost this past week, Bob Weir of the Grateful Dead. Miniserie: His & Hers op Netflix. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Spoločnosť Paramount na jeseň tohto roka oznámila, že hudobná stanica MTV končí všade okrem Spojených štátov a Kanady. Prežije len kanál, ktorý vysiela reality shows. Končia u nás teda MTV Music, MTV 80s, MTV 90s, Club MTV a MTV Live.

Fans have long awaited the official release of the group's legendary 1995 Unplugged set, and that wait is finally over: beginning November 7, 2025, MTV Unplugged will be available for the first time as a standalone release on vinyl, CD, and digital via Island Records/UMe. A special colored vinyl edition with alternate cover art will also be available exclusively through Complex.Originally taped on February 14, 1995 at the Howard Gilman Opera House in Brooklyn, the intimate nine-song performance aired two months later during the sixth season of MTV Unplugged. Following the release of their worldwide smash No Need to Argue, the setlist showcased the band's blend of vulnerability and power with songs like “Dreaming My Dreams,” “Ode To My Family,” “Empty,” “Zombie,” and the title track. They also revisited earlier hits like “Linger” and previewed unreleased gems “Free to Decide” and “I'm Still Remembering,” which would later appear on 1996's To The Faithful Departed.Perhaps most special is “Yesterday's Gone”, a song written by Dolores O'Riordan and Noel Hogan just one day before the show and performed only during that recording. “The only time we ever played it was for MTV,” Hogan recalls.Fergal reflected on the honor of joining the legendary Unplugged series, which previously hosted R.E.M., Pearl Jam, Nirvana, and The Cure:“It was a really chilled, relaxed vibe with the audience sitting on the floor. To be following in the footsteps of those artists was incredible.”Backed by Electra Strings, the quartet that had also joined them on Later with Jools Holland, The Cranberries delivered a performance critics and fans alike have deemed one of the finest in the history of the series. Publications like SPIN and Mixdown have ranked it among the best Unplugged sessions ever, while fans have clamored for its release for decades. With the anniversary reissues of No Need to Argue and the long-awaited arrival of MTV Unplugged as a standalone release, 2025 promises to be a landmark year for The Cranberries' legacy.“I'm really proud that the songs we wrote didn't need all the bells and whistles you get in the studio to sound good,” Noel shared. “They worked just as well stripped down and played acousticallwww.BetterHelp.com/TheBarnhttp://www.betterhelp.com/TheBarn http://www.betterhelp.com/TheBarnThis episode is sponsored by www.betterhelp.com/TheBarn and brought to you as always by The Barn Media Group. Long before we knew about digital discovery, one of the fastest ways for new artists to connect with audiences was to reimagine an existing hit and put it on an album or 45—infusing it with their own style, energy, and attitude. A Chuck Berry riff might get filtered through the Beatles' harmonies, or an old blues song could get a new spin in the hands of the Rolling Stones. Musicians have always looked back to reinterpret the songs that shaped them, essentially creating a conversation across decades of music. Great rock and roll covers often redefine the song. Jimi Hendrix's “All Along the Watchtower” transformed Bob Dylan's stark folk ballad into a guitar-rock, psychedelic stomper. Aretha Franklin took Otis Redding's “Respect” and made it a soul-rock anthem of empowerment. Nirvana's raw take on David Bowie's "The Man Who Sold the World" introduced the track to an entirely new audience. In each case, the cover didn't just honor the original—it expanded its reach. The best covers don't just repeat the past—they rewrite it, proving that a great song can live many lives. 10 Iconic Rock and Roll Covers and How They Transformed the Original Jimi Hendrix – All Along the Watchtower (1968) Originally by Bob Dylan, Hendrix electrified the song with guitars and redefined it as a rock classic. Dylan himself later performed it in Hendrix's style. The Beatles – Twist and Shout (1963) Originally recorded by The Top Notes and popularized by The Isley Brothers, the Beatles turned it into their own via John Lennon's famously shredded vocal take. Aretha Franklin – Respect (1967) Originally by Otis Redding, Aretha flipped the perspective, injecting it with feminist firepower, gospel-inspired vocals, and made it an anthem for empowerment and equality. The Rolling Stones – Little Red Rooster (1964) Originally by Willie Dixon (recorded by Howlin' Wolf), the Stones slowed it down, leaning into the deep Chicago blues feel, introducing American blues to a younger audience. Nirvana – The Man Who Sold the World (1993) Originally by David Bowie, Nirvana's MTV Unplugged version stripped it to a haunting acoustic vibe that resonated with '90s alternative fans - and (re)introduced Bowie to them, Joe Cocker – With a Little Help from My Friends (1968) Originally by The Beatles, Cocker turned the Sgt. Pepper and Ringo song into a soulful, slow-burning rocker.  Killer organ and gospel vocals. Janis Joplin – Piece of My Heart (1968) Originally by Erma Franklin, Joplin's version with Big Brother and the Holding Company was a raw and bluesy. The Clash – I Fought the Law (1979) Written in 1958 and first released in 1960 by The Crickets (after Buddy Holly left) and popularized by The Bobby Fuller Four, The Clash injected punk. It was their first single in the United States. Creedence Clearwater Revival – I Heard It Through the Grapevine (1970) Originally by Gladys Knight & The Pips and made famous by Marvin Gaye, CCR turned the Motown hit into an 11-minute swamp-rock jam. Jeff Buckley – Hallelujah (1994) Originally by Leonard Cohen, Buckley's haunting performance influenced artists in the decades that followed. Further Listening: 4 Lesser-Known but Brilliant Beatles Covers The Black Keys – She Said, She Said (2002) A gritty, stripped-down garage-rock take on The Beatles' psychedelic classic from Revolver. Siouxsie and the Banshees – Dear Prudence (1983) The Beatles' ballad morphs in goth-tinged new wave.. Gov't Mule – She Said, She Said / Tomorrow Never Knows (1998) A jam-band fusion of two Beatles tracks Fiona Apple – Across the Universe (1998) Slowed to a languid pace, Apple leans into the cosmic melancholy

Well known indie artist Rebecca Pidgeon conceived of her upcoming release "Unillusion" (August 29th release)as a more relaxed and intimate recording from the start to contrast with the intricate, polished, layered sound of her most recent albums. When she discussed her ideas with Perdomo, he had her look at episodes of MTV Unplugged series and Rebecca decided then and there, "It felt like the right approach —minimal, human, with moments that are as stripped down as just voice and acoustic guitar." Pidgeon and Fernando went into the studio with a team of outstanding musicians: Perdomo (bass, electric guitar); Andy Studer (violin, viola), Eszter Balint (violin on "Monkey Man" and "Where is the Man"); Matt Tecu (drums); Rebecca on acoustic guitar and vocals. Together they recapture the unfiltered warmth and immediacy of her earliest recordings while showing impressive sonic evolution showcasing her ever-maturing songwriting. The album's lyric themes range from the epic to the deeply personal. Tracks like "Dasharatha" draw inspiration from the ancient Indian epic poem, the Ramayana, weaving timeless tales of jealousy, grief, and rebirth into contemporary idiom recalling work like Bob Dylan's "Isis" or PJ Harvey's retelling of the Biblical story of Samson and Delilah in "Hair." More personal tracks venture into raw, emotional territories, resonating with listeners on a deeply human level.
