✦ In the immortal words of The Notorious B.I.G., get ready to sit and conversate for a few, with Atlanta's own Killer Mike. Legally known as Michael Render, the rapper, entrepreneur, and activist has launched a new podcast called "Conversate with Killer Mike." The show is recorded from his Atlanta studio, where he and his friends dive into topics both local and global. City Lights Collective producer Josh Thane recently sat down with the Atlanta icon to discuss the new project. ✦ Going to Brunch in Atlanta can seem like a sport. Even if you know some tricks to navigate the notoriously long lines, the cost can sometimes price people out of the game. In our mini-series, "Brunchin' on a Budget," we look at a few special Atlanta Brunch spots that can help you keep your wallet intact. This week, WABE arts reporter Summer Evans takes us to Ria's Bluebird. ✦ Today, we take a moment to hear from our artistic community In Their Own Words. This is where they tell us who they are, what they do, what they love, and a few things you might not see coming. What things? Who knows, there's only one way to find out. Today's spotlight shines on the band Champagne Lane, and we learn about their new album, "The World in Your Eyes." ✦ The art of Dance is leaping into the future at Spelman College. The new short documentary, "Beyond the Movement," explores new technologies and their applications in Dance through the testimony of students and faculty, as well as through their movement. The film, produced by WABE and made possible through a grant from HBCU Week Now, screens along with a live panel discussion on September 8th at Spelman's new Mary Schmidt Campbell Center for Innovation and the Arts. City Lights Collective Co-host Kim Drobes recently spoke with filmmaker Booker T. Mattison and Spelman's department chair of Dance and Choreography, Professor T. Lang, to learn more. ✦ What makes up a Good Night? I'm sure there are as many answers as there are people. But on the first Friday of every month, at Buteco in Grant Park, comedian David Purdue and Spoken Word Artist Adan Bean have a Free show that has a little bit of everything. You want to laugh, dance, hear an amazing vocalist, have some great food, have a strong drink, maybe all of that, or maybe just some of it. It's all available; at night, you can self-curate, appropriately titled: Good Night. City Lights Collective Co-host Jon Goode sat down with Adan Bean and David Purdue to discuss the night.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Tasha Ransom is an artist.More specifically, she is a musician, a painter, a photographer, and a writer. She's also a great conversationalist, and she is my guest for Episode No. 173.Tasha stopped by last week and sat across from me at the table. We swapped a great many phrases and touched on things like growing up, family, self-discovery, and music. Somewhere in the mix, we managed to have a brief gander at a few of her favorite records. Those were these:Our Mother the Mountain (1969), Townes Van ZandtT. Rex's Electric Warrior (1971)1 (2000), The BeatlesRed Elvises' Drinking with Jesus (2008)Please consider giving Tasha an Instagram follow at @tasharansomart; you can see pics of some of her work there. Find her via that same handle on YouTube, where you can check out her music videos, and find even more information at tasharansomart.com. Many thanks to Morgen Agesen for batting .500 with her awesome list of referrals. You can check out my conversation with her (Episode No. 166), and while you're in that neighborhood, John Knell and Ernie Yates episodes also appear (also courtesy of Morgen's connections). And many thanks to those who have supported the podcast. My only derp for the week was that I goofed up the UKG and the Run the Jewels lineups. I do now recall that UKG is Pimp C. & Bun B., and that Run the Jewels is El-P and Killer Mike. And I will recall that all the way up until the next time I don't.Anyway...copyright disclaimer: I do not own the rights to the audio clips contained within this episode. From hoodies to hip-hop, from cultural influence to corporate boardrooms—your identity is your brand's greatest asset. In this Masterclass episode, Evante Daniels returns to unpack the power of authenticity in branding and how embracing your unique identity can translate into profitability. We explore the psychology behind brand confidence, the impact of personal style in professional spaces, and why cultural IP is one of the most undervalued assets in business. But here's the truth—if you don't tie your branding and positioning to ROI, the market won't either. Evante breaks down why companies cut diversity initiatives, why cultural branding often gets overlooked, and how Black entrepreneurs can strategically position themselves to not just be seen, but to drive revenue and business growth. It's not just about showing up—it's about making sure your presence is tied to measurable impact, market share, and long-term brand equity. We also break down real-world examples of cultural branding done right—from hip-hop moguls to streetwear legends—and how businesses can leverage their narratives to elevate influence, establish credibility, and turn cultural capital into actual capital.Whether you're a creator, executive, or entrepreneur, this conversation will challenge you to rethink your brand positioning, embrace your full identity, and ensure your brand isn't just culturally relevant—but financially powerful.Tap in for Part 3 of this powerful Masterclass with Evante Daniels! NBA legend Michael Jordan’s son, Marcus Jordan, was arrested to for drug possession and resisting arrest in Florida after he was stopped by police. In this episode of "Normal World," Dave Landau, 1/4 Black Garrett, and Angela dive into Trump's latest border move — Mexico's sending 10,000 troops, while Justin Trudeau folds faster than ever, suddenly promising more enforcement. Meanwhile, Mexico's in a trade standoff with the U.S., as Trump threatens 25% tariffs unless Mexico cracks down on illegal immigration and drug smuggling. They tear into USAID for blowing millions on nonsense like a transgender opera in Colombia and a DEI musical in Ireland, all while American cities keep getting worse. Chuck Schumer tries (and fails) to make Super Bowl Sunday about tariffs, warning that securing the border could make beer and guacamole too expensive. Nobody's buying it. Democrats are losing Gen Z, corporate DEI is crumbling, and their bench of new leaders is nonexistent. Then, somehow, it turns into a deep dive on foot fetishes, Tarantino's thing for dirty feet, and why barefoot travel should be a crime. This spirals into a rant on underwear, the nightmare of wearing sandals on planes, and the secret horror of TSA checkpoints. The Grammys get roasted — Kanye's humiliation stunt, Billie Eilish making Bond music depressing, and Hollywood's total disconnect from reality. The airline disasters keep stacking up, including a co-pilot literally jumping out of a plane midair. And to wrap it up, Killer Mike is suing the Grammys for “emotional distress,” proving once and for all that the name doesn't quite fit. We begin 2025 by going back 23 years to discuss our favourite songs of 2002, including emo classics, motivational hardcore, sparkly piano pop, terrifyingly positive psychedelic religious cults, and THE GREATEST GUITAR RIFF OF ALL TIME.We've each chosen our 10 favourite songs of the year and sent them over to Colin's wife Helen, who put the playlists together and distributed them so we were each given a playlist of the 20 songs from the other two hosts, along with our own 10. We then ranked the playlists in order of preference and sent them back to Helen, who totalled up the points and worked out the order. She also joined us on the episode to read out the countdown, which we found out as we recorded so all reactions are genuine. Now, admittedly, in parts we're a little bit brutal to some of the songs in the list as we're three separate people with differing music tastes, but please remember that to be in this episode at all the songs have to have been in one of our top 10's of that year.Bands featured in this episode include (In alphabetical order, no spoilers here!) - Christina Aguilera ft Redman, Aqualung, Bright Eyes, Vanessa Carlton, Cousteau, The Delgados, The DIllinger Escape Plan Ft Mike Patton, Down, Frou Frou, Hatebreed, Idlewild, Isis, Jay-Z Ft Big Boi, Killer Mike, & Twista, July Skies, Ben Kweller, Avril Lavigne, Malcolm Middleton, Miss Black America, Nada Surf, Nine Inch Nails, Opeth, The Polyphonic Spree, Porcupine Tree, Sonic Youth, theSTART, Sigur Ros, Taking Back Sunday, Tech N9ne, Wilco, and James Yorkston & The AthletesFind all songs in alphabetical order here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/13AsY6By1DI8knbl7TpMFx?si=cd88b8d2738249feFind our We Dig Music Pollwinners Party playlist (featuring all of the winning songs up until now) here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/45zfDHo8zm6VqrvoEQSt3z?si=Ivt0oMj6SmitimvumYfFrQIf you want to listen to megalength playlists of all the songs we've individually picked since we started doing best of the year episodes (which need updating but I plan on doing them over the next month or so), you can listen to Colin's here – https://open.spotify.com/playlist/5x3Vy5Jry2IxG9JNOtabRT?si=HhcVKRCtRhWCK1KucyrDdgIan's here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2H0hnxe6WX50QNQdlfRH5T?si=XmEjnRqISNqDwi30p1uLqAand Tracey's here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2p3K0n8dKhjHb2nKBSYnKi?si=7a-cyDvSSuugdV1m5md9NwThe playlist of 20 songs from the other two hosts was scored as usual, our favourite song got 20 points, counting down incrementally to our least favourite which got 1 point. The scoring of our own list of 10 is now slightly more complicated in order to give a truer level of points to our own favourites. So rather than them only being able to score as many points as our 10th favourite in the other list, the points in our own list were distributed as follows -1st place - 20 points2nd place - 18 points3rd place – 16 points4th place – 14 points5th place – 12 points6th place – 9 points7th place – 7 points8th place – 5 points9th place – 3 points10th place -1 pointHosts - Ian Clarke, Colin Jackson-Brown & Tracey BGuest starring Helen Jackson-Brown.Playlist compiling/distributing – Helen Jackson-BrownRecorded/Edited/Mixed/Original Music by Colin Jackson-Brown for We Dig PodcastsThanks to Peter Latimer for help with the scoring system.Part of the We Dig Podcasts network along with Free With This Months Issue & Pick A Disc.Bluesky - https://bsky.app/profile/wedigmusic.bsky.socialInstagram - https://www.instagram.com/wedigmusicpcast/Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/wedigpusicpcast/Find our other episodes & podcasts at www.wedigpodcasts.com
