On this week's episode of You Are What You Read, we are joined by quintessential music maker and founding member of The Four Seasons, Bob Gaudio. Bob's career in music started at a young age. At the age of 15, he co-wrote his first hit, "Who Wears Short Shorts," for a group he started, The Royal Teens. His song, "Sherry," in the early '60s, launched The Four Seasons' incredible string of hits. At the time, he also began a productive and creative relationship with Bob Crewe, a teaming that produced an amazing run of hits for The Four Seasons, including "Big Girls Don't Cry," "Rag Doll," "Walk Like a Man," "Bye Bye Baby," "Silence Is Golden," and in 1967, Frankie Valli's classic, "Can't Take My Eyes Off of You." Gaudio also produced and co-wrote with his wife, Judy Parker, "Who Loves You," for The Four Seasons and Billboard Magazine's longest-charting single (54 weeks), "December '63 (Oh, What a Night)." Bob has collaborated with Neil Diamond, Barbra Streisand and Frank Sinatra, and has produced albums for Michael Jackson, Diana Ross, Marvin Gaye, Roberta Flack, Barry Manilow, Peabo Bryson and The Beach Boys, to cite just a few. This is a conversation about Bob's greatest hits- the songs we will be tuning up this summer!  Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

About a month before she turned 103, this is the last one I'll upload here. I wish I could've done so much of a better job. I'll post the rest from this 10 year trajectory on soundcloud — it's wild hearing her change, knowing the lady inside is hardly different at all, the soul the heart the real brain. But things start to come out differently — and the person recognizes the differences between the self and this other thing, this deteriorating thing, this clumsy thing. And for all the same reasons we started recording — I'm here at 35 feeling so much of those same beats. I'm aware enough to know this isn't working, still aware enough to know this ain't it. Of course there are differences, of course of course. But I can't shake that pain, of the dissonance between selves, of the gaps between so many things. Me and me and us and all of us. I miss her. As I write this, I miss you, but there's nothing to regret. I hope this can just exist here like a little water fountain at a park, tap on, running gently if you push the button hard, not bothering everyone else who brought enough to drink. Bleep bloop. Love, AVL

390: Munchkin is Using Innovation as a Competitive Advantage - VP of Marketing, Kristin Pagano

Kristin Pagano started her career as a media planner with Starcom Worldwide, where she had the opportunity to move back to LA and take on their Walt Disney account. She shifted to the client side at 20th Century Fox but felt a need to broaden her view of the overall marketing mix. After returning to school and graduating with her MBA, she started at Intel and then transferred to Activision. At that point, she had a 6-month-old and was presented with the opportunity to work for Munchkin. Starting as a senior brand manager in 2012, she worked her way up and became VP of Marketing in 2018.As the Vice President of Marketing, Kristin oversees all strategies and tactics designed to grow the Munchkin business. Munchkin was founded in Los Angeles in 1990. Last year, they sold 47 million products in the US, which translates to almost 13 products for every baby born, showing just how massive the brand is today. Operating in over 50 countries with six offices and almost 400 employees worldwide, Munchkin was named #8 on Fortune's list of America's Most Innovative Companies among brands like Alphabet, IBM, and Apple. Recently, they expanded their portfolio by launching Curio, a premium home lifestyle brand. Kristin tells us this is just the beginning of their diversification. In this episode, Alan and Kristin discuss the size and scope of Munchkin, their commitment to CSR and sustainability, and how they are overcoming the challenges of shrinking audience size and shifting distribution channels through innovation. One of the largest challenges Munchkin faces is having a very narrow audience with a limited lifetime value. This causes them to focus on the functionality and innovation of their products to delight their customers and win over a larger portion of this smaller group. With a small consumer base, it doesn't make sense for the brand to spend large amounts of money on traditional marketing. Instead, they make these emotional connections through platforms like podcasts and CTV. With the loss of major distribution partners like Bye Bye Baby and Babies R Us, Kristin and her team are also reworking the way they get their products to consumers and ensuring a better buying experience all around. In this episode, you'll learn:How Munchkin is dealing with a shrinking audience through innovation and alternative marketingHow a commitment to CSR and sustainability factor into Munchkin's business strategyHow Munchkin is innovating their distribution and shifting the way they work with partners to make the buying process better for their consumersKey Highlights: [01:30] A working mom aspiring to be more like her own[03:45] From media planner to marketing VP[06:05] What is Munchkin up to today?[07:50] What does marketing look like at Munchkin?[10:30] How does Munchkin approach product strategy and innovation?[14:10] How does a commitment to CSR and sustainability factor into Munchkin's business strategy?[17:10] Discontinuation of any product under 4 stars[19:25] Working with distribution partners to grow the business[22:30] Looking at new categories and pivoting where it makes sense[23:00] Insights from working at Intel[26:25] Advice to her younger self: Don't be afraid to try new things.[27:15] Staying on track with a rapidly evolving digital landscape: AI and Influencers[30:40] Watching the impending generational shift: Where do your customers fall?[32:40] Anticipating growth in a changing retail landscapeLooking for more?Visit our website for links to resources mentioned in this episode and ways to connect with the guest! Bob Crewe1930- 2014Inducted Into The Songwriters Hall Of Fame In 1995.While songwriter/producer/recording star, Bob Crewe, is perhaps best remembered for the notable parade of hits penned with co-writer Bob Gaudio for Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons, his songwriting credits began considerably earlier. In the early '50s, New Jersey-born Crewe first tasted success on the music charts with writing teammate Frank Slay with a batch of hits for a variety of artists. Among the best known were "Silhouettes" and "Daddy Cool" for The Rays; "Lah Dee Dah" and "Lucky Ladybug" for Billy and Lillie; and Freddy Cannon's "Tallahassee Lassie" and "Okefenokee."In 1961, Crewe also blossomed as a recording artist himself, with a pair of solo albums on Warwick Records. Kicks, featuring "The Whiffenpoof Song," and Crazy in the Heart, both produced by one of the more colorful producers of that time.Following these successes as a solo recording act, Crewe joined forces with songwriter Bob Gaudio, and good fortune struck almost immediately for the pair with the smash hit, "Sherry," for Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons. Thus began a years-long association with an uninterrupted string of chart successes including "Big Girls Don't Cry," "Rag Doll," "Ronnie," "Walk Like a Man," "Bye Bye Baby" and "Connie 0," as well as the monumental Frankie Valli hit, "Can't Take My Eyes Off of You."Other Crewe and Gaudio successes include "The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine," for The Walker Brothers and "Silence Is Golden" by The Tremeloes. Following this phase, Crewe moved out again on his own to form The Bob Crewe Generation ("Music to Watch Girls By"), utilizing studio musicians and original material for instrumental music collections. Bob Crewe later teamed with writer, Charles Fox, in penning the soundtrack for Dino De Laurentis' film, "Barbarella."During the mid-sixties, Bob Crewe turned discoverer, locating a band known as Billy Lee and The Rivieras, which he later re-named, Mitch Ryder and The Detroit Wheels, a major success on the charts with such Crewe-arranged smashes as "Jenny Take a Ride," "Devil With the Blue Dress On" and "Sock It to Me Baby."As the '60s were coming to a close, Crewe had also established his own recording firm, Crewe Records, which owned hits by Oliver and Lesley Gore, among others. Later, Crewe wrote and produced the song, "Eternity," which became an international hit for Vicki Carr. Following a short stay with Motown Records, when he produced what turned out to be Bobby Darin's final album, Crewe rejoined forces with Bob Gaudio and Frankie Valli, and bought back from Motown the tape master for Valli's "My Eyes Adored You," a song co-written with Kenny Nolan, which became a huge new hit for Valli on Private Stock Records. The song "Lady Marmalade," another joint effort for Crewe and Nolan, went on to reach hit status and also helped re-establish Patti LaBelle as an artist of major stature.Still later, Crewe and Gaudio teamed with another writer, Jerry Corbetta, in penning the hit song "You're Looking Like Love to Me," for Roberta Flack and Peabo Bryson. Crewe also collaborated with Corbetta and the writer, Ellie Greenwich, in producing the original cast album for Greenwich's Broadway musical, "Leader of the Pack."In addition to his music, Crewe also owned impressive credentials in the art world. He has designed numerous album covers and has been featured in several one-man gallery showings, including The Earl McGrath Gallery and Thomas Solomon's Garage in Los Angeles.

It's one thing to get a vision from God. It's another thing to act on that vision when your current life doesn't look like the promise. I had the opportunity to sit down with K'la Inman to talk about faith. K'la is no stranger to speaking things into existence even when her present circumstances look nothing like what she is saying out of her mouth. She grabs onto the promises of God and moves on them. K'la Inman, who goes by the name K'la Model Maker has been in the entertainment industry for around 12 years. She has worked on nearly every type of set, including tv/film, commercial, and print.  K'la started her company to help people just like her younger self learn exactly how to start in the industry. She wasted thousands of dollars on fake modeling agencies that would come to town promising to deliver her 'dream' and had nothing to show for it.  Her passion is to expose the frauds, and light up the true path to a career in this industry and in doing so, she has landed her clients contracts with companies like Netflix, Nike, LG, Bye Bye Baby, Ford, Sesame Street, and so many more. In this episode, K'la and I discussed: How K'la got started helping parents land real modeling contracts for their kids When she came to know God for herself Her development of  spiritual discipline to hear God clearly How K'la discovered the power of her words K'la's vision for her future What kept her going when her present circumstances didn't look like the vision Her purpose  How K'la prevents her career and purpose from overshadowing her relationship with God and the time she spends with Him and much more! The band was at the very start of rock n roll in Australia and they are true pioneers. In this era, Col Joy and the Joye Boys popularity and chart success is only rivalled by that of Johnny O'Keefe and the Dee Jays. They also hold the distinction being the first Australian act to have a Number 1 record with Bye Bye Baby. Legendary Boston PI Spenser is back in ROBERT B. PARKER'S BYE BYE BABY, the 50th installment in the critically acclaimed saga started by the late Parker and the tenth to be written by New York Times-bestselling author Ace Atkins. Over the years, fans have looked to Spenser—widely considered to be “Parker's greatest creation” (Chicago Sun-Times)—as a symbol of honor and honesty in a sordid world. Nowhere is this more apparent than in this latest entry, which sends Spenser on the campaign trail with a progressive political ingenue, who is the target of a deadly conspiracy. G. P. Putnam's Sons is thrilled to publish this electrifying new adventure. Carolina Garcia-Ramirez is a rising star in national politics, taking on the establishment with her progressive agenda. Tough, outspoken, and driven, the young congresswoman has ignited a new conversation in Boston about race, poverty, health care, and the environment. Now facing her second campaign, she finds herself not only fighting a tight primary with an old guard challenger but also contending with numerous death threats coming from hundreds of suspects. When her chief of staff reaches out to Spenser for security and help finding the culprits of what he believes to be the most credible threats, Garcia-Ramirez is less than thrilled. Since her first grassroots run, she's used to the antipathy and intimidation women of color often face when seeking power. To her, it's all noise. But it turns out an FBI agent disagrees, warning Spenser that Garcia-Ramirez might be in real danger this time. It doesn't take long for Spenser to cross paths with an extremist group called The Minutemen, led by a wealthy Harvard grad named Bishop Graves. Although Graves is a social media sensation, pushing an agenda of white supremacy and toxic masculinity, he denies he's behind the attacks. As the primary nears and threats become a deadly plot, it's up to Spenser, Hawk, and a surprise trusted ally to ensure the congresswoman is safe. This is Spenser doing what he does best, living by a personal code and moral compass that can't ever be broken. ABOUT THE AUTHORS: Ace Atkins is the New York Times bestselling author of twenty-eight books, including ten books in his Quinn Colson series. Handpicked by the Robert B. Parker Estate nearly a decade ago to continue the Spenser series, he's written ten novels about the iconic private eye. He lives and works in Oxford, Mississippi. Robert B. Parker was the author of seventy books, including the legendary Spenser detective series, the novels featuring Police Chief Jesse Stone, and the acclaimed Virgil Cole-Everett Hitch Westerns, as well as the Sunny Randall novels. Winner of the Mystery Writers of America Grand Master Award and long considered the undisputed dean of American crime fiction, he died in January 2010. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/steve-richards/support

You are in for a special treat today! I've got to do an exclusive phone interview with David Ball, the last living member of Uncle Walt's Band, as well as a special guest, country music singer/songwriter Gary P. Nunn.   Uncle Walt's Band was an important cult band, which has influenced so many musicians in the US. After releasing the anthology and expanded versions of their self-titled debut and its follow-up, An American in Texas, Omnivore Recordings released a re-imagined version of Recorded Live — now titled Recorded Live at Waterloo Ice House.  Recorded Live at Waterloo Ice House helps paint a bigger, wider picture of Uncle Walt's Band in their prime, and certainly in their element. I've listened the album on repeat, the 21 tracks are so powerful, not missing any of the authenticity and originality since their original performance in 1982.  First I talk to Gary P. Nunn about his memories of Uncle Walt's Band and how they influenced his music. Then David Ball and I chatted for one hour about what it was like when the band was active in Austin. He shares memories and stories of their live performances, rehearsals, recording sessions, and creating with his two late bandmates, Walter Hyatt and Champ Hood.  I feel honoured as this is the only interview David Ball has done to promote the re-release of their live album, and I hope you enjoy this conversation with a true Texas legend.   “We loved playing live. You put us on the record, and you can't see us!” - David Ball  Time Stamps: 0:50 - Why this episode is unique and who our guests are. 6:25 - Playing a snippet of Just a Little Understanding from Live at the Waterloo Ice House. 9:15 - What the secret to Uncle Walt's Band was, and the issues with spaces for rehearsals and performances. 12:18 - How Walter Hyatt became the frontman of the band. 15:00 - What the music of Uncle Walt's Band is like. 16:30 - For how long Gary P.
