L. Steven and I first met over a decade and a half ago, while sharing the stage in the Broadway Company of The Lion King and traveling together with the National Tour, during which time he had the honor of performing at The White House. Always in demand, Steven's many credits include Ataria, Cutman, G Word, Miss Saigon, Songs For A New World, Godspell, and A Chorus Line. He's been seen on film and television in The Electric Company (Leo Watson), Last of The Ninth (HBO Pilot), Made For Each Other, Expiration Date, and Game Over. For the last decade, Steven's Mufasa has been the heart and soul of The Lion King on Broadway. It was wonderful to reminisce and hear about not only his extraordinary career but how it has been impacted by the burgeoning career of his remarkable son, Steven Jr., a recent college grad and certainly a star in the making. Tread Perilously's celebration of Doctor Who's 60th anniversary continues with "The Time Meddler." When The Doctor and Vicki discover astronaut Steven Taylor stowed away on the TARDIS before they left Mechanus, the pair try to convince him that the ship can travel in time and space. They soon land in Northumbria circa 1066, when viking raiders are still causing problems for the Saxons but William is not yet "the Conqueror." All of which suits a lone monk in a nearby abbey just fine. But why is he so interested in the TARDIS and why does he have a phonograph player? Will The Doctor and his new team foil the monk's plans? Justin compares Doctor Who with the work of J.R.R. Tolkien. He also enjoys the provincial attitude toward history on display throughout the story. Erik suggests other points in time the Monk could go to create a worldwide Flemish Empire. Inflection points outside of western Europe are also considered. The revolving door of First Doctor companions gets examined -- as does the four-person dynamic of the early show. Justin reframes the Fifth Doctor era. Erik spots a moment where William Hartnell truly breaks character and guest actor Alethea Charlton earns an MVP spot.

Welcome to another exciting episode of Scaling UP! H2O, the podcast that's taking you through Industrial Water Week 2023! I'm your host, Trace Blackmore, and today, we're diving deep into the world of boilers on this special "Boiler Tuesday" episode. In honor of Boiler Tuesday, we're revisiting Episode 318, where Ritchie Ware and Steven Taylor from WARE shared their insights on the power of steam and its immense impact on our daily lives. These guys make boilers fun, and their materials are fantastic for training, even for those who aren't technically inclined. Steam is everywhere, and most people don't realize just how crucial it is. It's in your carpet, your drywall, your appliances, your food, and so much more. If we removed steam from the equation, our lives would look drastically different. We need more people to understand the significance of what we do in this industry. This is a rewarding field, but it's not without its challenges. However, it's a trade that makes a real difference, and the heart of many industrial operations is the boiler. When that boiler goes down, no matter how great your team is or how fantastic your products are, everything grinds to a halt. It's a reminder of the vital role we play in the world. So, let's make it our mission this week and beyond to invite more people into this incredible industry. Let's keep celebrating, learning, and growing together. And don't forget to share your boiler photos with the hashtag #IWWeek23. Join us tomorrow for another episode dedicated to "Cooling Wednesday." Taking a moment to celebrate one of Classic Who's most underrated gems: Steven Taylor!  The man who escaped a Mechanoid City and nearly died for a teddy bear who goes on to become a leader uniting Elders and Savages. Noble, headstrong, a tad  immature, and a more than a bit silly, Steven deserves more love y'all.Steven is arguably the Companion to the First Doctor who goes through the most--and he changes the most because of that experience! Our first companion to a "hero" Doctor, he is the first to be the "right-hand man" and friend to the Doctor, the first companion to embody the role we generally see companions play going forward.NOTE for Clarity: I mention that Steven struggles with empathy...I think a better way of putting this would be he intellectually struggles with "perspective-taking." He deeply cares about people and has great sympathy for their suffering, but he struggles to understand when others see the world differently from him (which leads to him sometimes being a bit pig-headed/stubborn). I think the First Doctor actually has almost the opposite problem wherein he struggles to emotionally feel/connect to others but learns (mostly from Ian/Barbara) to understand multiple perspectives and ways of seeing the world.  In the most simplistic terms: Steven is all HEART, and the Doctor is all HEAD. In the far distant future there exists an almost perfect civilization with wealth, knowledge, and great scientific advancements. They have tracked the Doctor's progress through time and space and eagerly await his predicted arrival.... but how have they achieved such greatness? And who are the Savages who lurk beyond the City walls?AKA Doctor Who does another allegory on why capitalism is bad. _____JANO: How can you condemn this great artistic and scientific civilization because of a few wretched barbarians?_____________________________________________________DOCTOR: Indeed I am going to oppose you, just in the same way that I oppose the Daleks or any other menace to common humanity.JANO: I am sorry you take this attitude, Doctor. It is most unscientific. You are standing in the way of human progress.DOCTOR: Human progress, sir? How dare you call your treatment of these people progress!JANO: They are hardly people, Doctor. They are not like us.DOCTOR: I fail to see the difference.JANO: Do you not realise that all progress is based on exploitation?DOCTOR: Exploitation indeed! This, sir, is protracted murder!JANO: We have achieved a very great deal merely by the sacrifice of a few savages.DOCTOR: The sacrifice of even one soul is far too great! You must put an end to this inhuman practice.___________JANO: You will find what I going to say very difficult to understand. TUNE INTO THE TOWN Ontario's municipal election day is October 24th, but eight days of advance voting for Toronto's municipal election begins tomorrow. And with Premier Doug Ford poised to introduce further measures to expedite housing construction…and boost density…immediately after the October 24th municipal elections...what might this mean for municipalities? Libby Znaimer is joined by Karen Stintz, CEO of Variety Village; Lauren O'Neil, Senior News Editor of BlogTO; and David Crombie, Former Mayor of Toronto, to unpack these issues. THE PSYCHOLOGY OF GATHERINGS & GRATITUDE The Thanksgiving weekend is almost upon us. And with COVID-19 restrictions seemingly a thing of the past, many people are entertaining the idea of, well, entertaining. But with the mental toll that the pandemic, and subsequently the economy, has taken over the last few years…is it challenging for people to feel grateful? Libby Znaimer is joined by Dr. Brent Mulrooney, Clinical Psychologist and Director of the Centre For Interpersonal Relationships in Toronto; and Dr. Steven Taylor, Professor and Clinical Psychologist in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of British Columbia, and author of The Psychology of Pandemics, to explore the science of gatherings and gratitude.

Welcome to the Peaceful Political Revolution in America Podcast. In the last episode, we talked about our frozen republuc, and how to our detriment, it has not been improved upon in over 230 years. It was designed to be an unbreakable contract between Americans, protecting sectoral rights and the individual accumulation of wealth and property. The slavocracy wanted protection from the intrusion of the north. They did not want their lavish and profitable lifestyles interrupted. Their constitution, the southern planters in particular, was to remain fixed.  It was never meant to be changed. We also discussed some of the reasons why our constitution has become even more rigid over the past century. I'm going to continue the discussion today about our American political system with Dean Steven Taylor on his book,  A DIfferent Democracy. A comparative study of the American political system with other more modern and more effective democracies from around the world. This kind of comparative analysis you might suspect would be common, but on the contrary, it is actually quite rare, even within the broad spectrum of political science. The American system of government is thought of as exceptional and as such it is studied in its own distinct light, apart from other democracies around the world. Not only did our constitution prove victorious in WW2,  it also gave rise to the post-war boom and the great middle class, or so it seemed. America was prosperous and thriving. Infused with the spirit of victory while other nations struggled to rekindle their devastated homelands by creating new and more effective  democratic governments, America sank into another constitutional coma. We turned our backs on the kinds of constitutional changes that would empower the democratic spirit in America as if the economic spirit was all that mattered, and we remained captured by a political system no living American would think logical in today's world. There are many democratic institutions and dynamics which could make our government much more effective and fully democratic. Those more democratic institutions however are completely dismissed by organizations like the NCC and the ACS. Many of our best constitutional scholars seem either uninformed or dismissive of the democratic achievements of the 20th-century in Europe and elsewhere. To them, the American constitution has some kind of immortal standing. It cannot be challenged, even with empirically established facts. The concept of American Exceptionalism is a big topic and I am not sure I can get through the first chapter of A Different Democracy in one hour, let alone the entire book, but to put us on the trail and set our minds to the hunt is Steven Taylor, Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and Professor of Political Science at Troy University in Alabama.  He is also co-author along with Matthew Shugart, Bernard Grofman, and  Arend Lijphart, on A Different Democracy. The American government is a 31 country perspective.  Welcome to the Peaceful Political Revolution in American Podcast, it's great to have you here!

Flight Through Entirety: A Doctor Who Podcast

It's the last episode of the first half of the season, and to celebrate, Nathan, James, Peter and Adam Richard have invited literally everyone they've ever met to join them at Demons' Run for a bloodless victory swiftly followed by a painful death. Oh, and the baby shower has been cancelled. Which is just the sort of thing that happens when A Good Man Goes to War. Notes and links If you want to hear more about the challenges of directing a Moffat script, you should head over to Rachel Talalay's Tumblr, which is a fascinating and very telling read. Nathan mentions (again) The Writer's Tale, which is the place to go to find out about how difficult RTD found the workload on Doctor Who during his first stint as showrunner of the programme. Pray for him. Upsettingly, Lesbian Spank Inferno was the title of the fourth episode of Steven Moffat's breakout sitcom Coupling, in which we learn that it was also the title of series lead Steven Taylor's favourite pornographic video. James and Adam both comment on a Big Finish sequel to Inferno called Primord, in which a recast Liz Shaw (Caroline John's daughter Daisy Ashford) gets turned into a Primord or something. It's in the name, people! And finally, James mentions a post Moffat wrote on rec.arts.doctorwho, which no longer exists, but which you can find quoted in its entirety here.
