During my experience at Transform I had the opportunity to speak with some great people - chief among them was Dan Michelson, CEO and founder of InCommon.com, and author of the book Holy Shift! Moving Your Company Forward to the Future of Work. We talked about the importance of work culture and how a lot of those lessons prompted him to want to write his book. We also talk about some shared experiences of a mentor we both have in common. Dan has interviewed thousands of CEO's and put his experiences into practice with his book, and continues with his efforts at InCommon.com.  I hope you enjoy this as much as I did!  Thanks, Stacie More episodes at StacieBaird.com. In our final episode of 2023, Michael speaks with the editors of the International Journal of the Commons, which In Common has worked with for the past few years, producing podcast episodes based on articles published there. Today's guests are Frank van Laerhoven, Associate Professor at the Copernicus Institute of Sustainable Development at Utrecht University in the Netherlands, Mike Schoon, Associate Professor in the School of Sustainability at Arizona State University, Sergio Villamayor-Tomas, Ramon y Cajal Senior Researcher at the Institute of Environmental Science and Technology in Barcelona, Spain, and the journal's new editor-in-chief, Maria Claudia lopez, Associate Professor in the Department of Community Sustainability at Michigan State University. Michael and the IJC editors talk about the journal and its role in the commons research community, and how the editors think about issues such as journal impact factor, one of many metrics that seem to be exerting more and more influence over our professional lives and affecting how we think about ourselves individually and collectively. Frank describes his view of the journal as a means for community development, applying the same principles of the commons and commoning that many in the commons community use in their research activities. This is also how we view the role of the In Common Podcast. Thank you for listening to us this year. Feel free to reach out with feedback and suggestions for what you like like to hear moving forward. See you in 2024!

In this episode, Michael speaks with Eric Klopfer, the chair of the department of Comparative Media Studies and Writing at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, or MIT. At MIT Eric is also the director of the Scheller Teacher Education program as well as the Education Arcade. Eric is a leader in the space of game design for education. He recently co-authored a book on the subject: Resonant Games, Design Principles for Learning Games that Connect Hearts, Minds and the Everyday. During the conversation, Eric discusses games as an example of experiential learning and emphasizes the importance of combining a game exercise with reflection, which is where the real learning happens through what Eric calls an action-reflection cycle. Eric and Michael also discuss the game that originally led Michael to speak to Eric: a simulation of the tragedy of the commons in a fishery, which Eric led the development of. In addition to this episode, Michael discusses his implementations of this game in a recent blog post on the In Common website. The Third Story Podcast with Leo Sidran

The fact that he grew up in Toronto is not necessarily crucial to understanding guitarist Matthew Stevens point of view. He's regarded to be one of "most exciting up-and-coming jazz guitarists" in his generation, in any part of the world. His songs and guitar playing are featured on albums by the likes of Christian Scott, Esperanza Spalding, Terri Lyne Carrington, Dave Douglas, Linda Oh, Harvey Mason. He has worked as a guitarist with producers Quincy Jones, Glen Ballard and Tony Visconti. As a producer himself, he worked on Esperanza Spalding's albums Exposure and the Grammy winning 12 Little Spells and on Terri Lyne Carrington's Grammy nominated album Waiting Game. In addition to his solo recordings, he has also made three albums with Walter Smith III who I spoke to recently: they call the project In Common, and on each record they call together a different collection of collaborators to round out the group. The most recent In Common project came out earlier this year on Whirlwind Recordings and features Dave Holland, Terri Lyne Carrington and Kris Davis.   Matthew gets around. I think it's because he's so open, and so collaborative. He brings his personality to all his projects, but he's clearly also very sensitive and empathic. And maybe, just maybe, that has something to do with Canada. Describing his own musical development, he speaks very affectionately and knowingly about a whole community of guitar players in and around Toronto - a school of playing that I admit, I didn't know so much about before we talked. So many of the players he named share a kind of gentle, swinging sophistication, elegance but also a little bit of grit. I think Matt has applied some of that to his playing - he's certainly not afraid of some distortion - his sound is often very gritty - but even when he rocks out, I hope he'll forgive me for saying this - there's still a kind of gentleness to it. He's a nice guy, and it shows up in the music.  We spoke recently about Canada, how the business of jazz has evolved in his lifetime, how the pandemic reoriented him both personally and musically, gear, practice, teaching, the local scenes in Toronto and Pittsburgh, and one of my favorite topics: what is production?

Read along to practice your English and to learn the English phrases IN COMMON and THE COMMON COLDIn this English lesson I wanted to help you learn the English phrase in common. When you have something in common with someone, it means you share the same experience or you share the same characteristics, here's a good example. One of the things that Jen and I have in common is that we both grew up on farms. So you can see that there's something about each of us that is the same. One of the things that all of you have in common, if you are watching this video, the thing you have in common is that you are all learning English. So in English, when you say that you have something in common with someone, it means that you're doing the same thing, or you share the same thing or the same experience. Let me try to think of one more example. One of the things that I have in common with many men who are my age is that my hair is starting to turn a little bit gray. So when you have something in common with someone, it means that there's something similar about the two of you.WANT MORE ENGLISH LESSONS? GO TO YOUTUBE AND SEARCH, "BOB THE CANADIAN"#englishteacher #englishlessons #speakingenglish #bobthecanadianThe second phrase I wanted to teach you today is the phrase the common cold. In the winter, especially in Canada we get sick sometimes. One of the things we get is we get a cold, we get the cold so often, or we get a cold so often, sorry, a little mistake there. We get a cold so often that it is probably the most common thing for you to get in the winter here in Canada. So we call it the common cold, if you aren't sure what a cold is, a cold is when you have a stuffed up nose, maybe a little bit of a cough, I'm supposed to cough in my sleeve now, and you just don't feel well so you're a little bit sick. It's different than the flu. Where, when you have the flu, you usually have a fever and a stuffed up nose and a sore throat. When you have the cold, when you have a cold, or when you have the common cold, you can see why I'm making the mistake, right? Because we say, oh, I have a cold or you refer to it as the common cold. So the common cold is the most common illness for you to get here in the winter in Canada and in most places in the world. So to review, when you have something in common with something I'm really having trouble speaking English today, aren't I? I think it's because it's so bright out, I'm having trouble keeping my eyes open. Let's review, when you have something in common with someone, it means that there's something similar about the both of you, there's something that is the same. Either an experience or how you look or something else. And the common cold is how we refer to the most common illness that you get in Canada in the winter and in most places in the world. But hey, let's look at a comment from a previous video. I'm laughing at myself because I feel like I'm doing a really bad job today, but I'm just gonna keep going. So hopefully you don't mind a slightly low quality lesson today. Anyways, here is a comment from Qiu Park. This is from yesterday's lesson where Qiu Park says, I like English musicals, and I have not listened to them for a long time. I'm gonna find some and listen to them, thank you Bob. And my response was musicals are awesome, Jen and I have only seen Mamma Mia. We'd love to start seeing more in the future. So if you don't know, a musical is a play, but where people sing during the play, and there are many musicals that you can go see, usually in the city of Toronto.Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/bobthecanadian)

Thanks to all our guests and listeners, the Finding Sustainability Podcast has been, in our eyes, a large success. In order to provide a sustainable platform for the podcast going forward and to expand opportunities for new types of content, we will now become an official partner with the International Association for the Study of the Commons (IASC) and the International Journal of the Commons (IJC). The new name our podcast will be In Common. https://incommonpodcast.org/ https://iasc-commons.org/ https://www.thecommonsjournal.org/ The In Common podcast will explore the connections between humans, their environment and each other through stories told by scholars and practitioners. In-depth interviews and methods webinars explore interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary work on commons governance, social-ecological resilience, and sustainability. The title of the podcast is meant to evoke several ideas related to the sharing of resources. First, it reflects the idea of holding resources “In common” as it relates to actions of “commoning”, a process contrary to commons enclosures that we see around the world. We hope the podcast provides a shared space for open-access conversations that can help build community. Second, it is meant to emphasize the need to see what we have “in common”, in spite of the barriers across the disciplines and perspectives that we must incorporate in order to sustainably manage shared resources.Following the Finding Sustainability Podcast, In Common will continue to have full episodes of long-form interviews, and Insight episodes containing highlights of these longer episodes. Additionally, the podcast will contain a series of Future Earth’s Programme on Ecosystem Change and Society (PECS) video webinars describing different methods to analyze human-environment interactions. This series is run by Mike Schoon from Arizona State University. Our Blog, run by Graham Epstein, explores similar content but is not interview based. The blog provides an alternative space for sharing academic ideas, and will utilize online polls and surveys with our listeners and followers to discuss topics.   If you are already subscribed to the Finding Sustainability Podcast on your podcast player, you will continue to stay subscribed to the In Common podcast. Video webinars can be viewed on our website or directly on some podcast mobile apps such as Apple Podcasts, Overcast and Pocket Casts.

You’ve got a great new job, and you move to a new city—say, New York or San Francisco. You don’t know anyone. You don’t know the neighborhoods. You don’t have a community. Where do you live? The new answer is Common. Founded by Brad Hargreaves, former co-founder of General Assembly, Common is creating a new kind of residence: co-living. In Common’s co-living apartments you get your own bedroom, then you share the kitchen, living areas, and “a whole long of common space,” according to Brad—all at a lower price point than a studio apartment. Plus cleaning of all common spaces, utilities, wifi, and furnishings are thrown in, making it a very good deal indeed. The intangible, of course, which also comes included with the rent, is the community. Basically, with Common, you get to “keep the fun things like having potluck dinners, hanging out with friends, meeting new people, but take away all of the annoyances.” See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Alicia Keys' new album "Here" is finally out and as always, we're here to give you the real on the album. We talk about the promotion behind the album, the omission of the lead single "In Common" and the disappointing first week sales. The album is projected to sell 33-38k which is a huge drop off from her last album. We also try to figure out how Solange has managed to sell more than the 2000's superstars Alicia Keys and Usher. We also talk about Tinashe's new mixtape "Nightride" and her journey being on RCA records since signing with them a few years back. We've seen her going in a lot of different directions so we try to figure out what the best lane for is right now. Afterwards we talk about some of the new R&B releases that have come out this year including the chart topping single "Thick Of It" by Mary J. Blige and the new Bruno Mars joint "Versace On The Floor" which sounds like it's straight from 1991. We also briefly debate whether Bruno Mars could possible bring R&B back.

After another summer that beat record-breaking temperatures from 2015, don't tell me there isn't global warming. The good news from this hot mess, is that the circuit beats keep getting equally as hot as Party Favorz presents the 2016 Fall Edition. We kick things off with the Danny Verde progressive remix of Boys Like You by Who Is Fancy, who with some big names behind him (Scooter Braun and Dr. Luke) managed to rope in Meghan Trainor & Ariana Grande for additional vocal duties. The end result is a fun romp through camp that only WIF could pull off. Expect to be hearing this A LOT in clubs and circuit events this fall. The heat quickly builds up into a massive mashup with the infamous Lula in the mix before moving into the head-turning remix of Alicia Keys latest In Common. Barry Harris totally flips the script on this slow burner making it a cross between big-time Ibiza vs. tribal while throwing in a bit of George Kranz (Din Daa Daa) into the mix. I was totally blown away the minute I heard this; that is until we get to one of Barry's original mashups below. I am such a HUGE fan of Betty Who's remake of I Love You Always Forever, I was pleased to find out Toy Armada & DJ Grind remixed the song. With their big room sweeping sound, it just fits so perfectly it should have the boys singing along in unity. Currently, we have competing remakes of the Lovestation classic Teardrops running up the Billboard club charts by Cole Plante and Dawn Tallman. Both are equally good but Dawn gets the edge in that it's well... Dawn. We don't have a big room circuit-styled remix from her yet but I predict we will. In the meantime, Cole does an outstanding job with remixes by Chris Cox and Toy Armada & DJ Grind. He plays with the lyrics a bit to make them more suitable for a male singer, but there is no mistaking the classic seeds of the original. Skylar Stecker delivers a worthy remake of the Eurythmics' classic Sweet Dreams (#1 Billboard Club Dance a week ago) and Bent Collective (a.k.a. Steve Redant and Danny Verde) churn out a release for Swishcraft Get Up Stand Up. While I prefer the original, for the sake of cohesiveness I went with the more progressive mix by Louis Lennon, which scales back the vocals much to my dismay. The four-song EP they released in 1978 was titled Keep on Jumpin'. The lead single, In the Bush (which is utilized extensively through Push) stalled on the top 40 due to it's uhh, rather sexual nature but still reached number one on the Billboard Disco Charts. In fact, the second single Keep on Jumpin' also reached number one on the disco charts and again in the 90's when Todd Terry enlisted Jocelyn Brown and Martha Wash to perform a new house version of the song. Are you ready? Are you ready for this?  Do you like it? Do you like it like this? Push, push in the bush.  I used to keep up with all the pop songs and remember this one being played at local radio. In sixth grade, I was sexually naive (except for masturbating) and had written the lyrics down and passed them to a girlfriend in one of my classes. That note, was intercepted by Sister Phyllis (I attended parochial school) and was chastised after class for writing such garbage. I was embarrassed but didn't know exactly what for. It's time to get down to some purifying house, dirty disco and phatt funk with the fall edition of the Funky House Sessions, also better known as funkydiscohouseshit. I kick things off with a couple of straight-up house tunes, both remakes. The first should be very familiar to every Pet Shops Boys fan as Sterling Void takes on It's All Aright and delivers a straight rendition of the original with Eric Kupper at the boards providing a smooth remix. This version is so faithful to the original, it almost makes me wish the PSB vocals were used since I keep thinking of the original every time I hear this. That's not to take away from this rendition but it is a testament to how deeply ingrained Neil Tennant's vocals are to the original classic. This is followed by Chocolate Dice's I'm An Addict, which uses select portions of Toto's 1979 hit Georgie Porgie. This is actually a smart take of the original even if we don't get the fabulous Cheryl Lynn performing vocal chores on the chorus. I had to go back and listen to the original and realized just how much I really enjoy this song. Lee Walker & DJ Deeon's massive hit Freak Like Me get's an 80's disco remake proving how versatile this song is. It just works. We quickly move into some 70's style funk with Bad Boy Bill & J Paul Getto on Do Your Thing before launching into DJ Meme's self-described remix of "epic proportions" of Donna Summer's MacArthur Park. This put's the recent Rosabel version to shame as Meme really drives this one home proving his long-lasting devotion to all things disco. I followed this with a last minute entry by Richard Burton's remake of another 70's classic Bad Luck. DJ Spen's dirty garage house version is so good that there was no way I could leave this song out for a future set. You'll notice a certain back in forth within the house, disco, and funk genres before all of a sudden I make an abrupt switch-up to some Soulful house. Dawn Tallman's latest Teardrops (a remake of the late 90's classic by Lovestation) is nothing short of brilliant. Once again Eric Kupper handles the remix duties but there is also an excellent version by Stonebridge and Sted-E & Hybrib Heights. I'm hoping for a big circuit-house version at some point because Cole Plante has already delivered his take on this classic, which is making an appearance on the 2016 Fall Edition dropping tomorrow. ' Another personal favorite is Alicia Keys' In Common, which has had some stellar house remixes including the Groove Junkies. Wait until tomorrow when you hear what Barry Harris did with the song because it's going to blow you away! From there, things begin to heat up again for more funk and disco before closing things out with a skillful re-work of Freeez' 80's Freestyle classic I.O.U. I've been hard at work wrapping up all the sets so as to release EVERYTHING this week. Tomorrow, I've got the Fall Edition for the circuit boys and the day after I'll be dropping the next commercial EDM set. Lot's of musical options heading your way for your weekend fun so make sure you're keeping up with my release schedule or be left in the dust. Until tomorrow ...ENJOY! Album : Funky House Sessions | Fall 2016 Genre : House, Disco, Funk, Soulful Year : 2016 Total Time : 01:30:42 Sterling Void - It's All Right (Eric Kupper Remix) Chocolate Dice - I'm An Addict (4 Ur Love) (Original Mix) DJ Fudge - Your Love (Original) Lee Walker vs. DJ Deeon feat. Katy B & MNEK - Freak Like Me (Disco Demolition Remix) Bad Boy Bill + J Paul Getto + Milty Evans - Do Your Thing (Original) Donna Summer - MacArthur Park (DJ Meme Remix of Epic Proportions) Richard Burton - Bad Luck (DJ SPEN Bootleg Mix) Weiss (UK) - You're Sunshine (Original Mix) Dawn Tallman - Teardrops (Eric Kupper Extended Mix) Alicia Keys - In Common (Groove Junkies Remix) Mark Funk - Here To Stay (Original Mix) Mr. Luke & Nicolas Saad - Let My Body Do the Talkin' (Original)
