Certaines mythologies de cinéma sont increvables. En l'occurence celles d'Alien et du film d'action hong-kongais des années 90, qui font leur retour en salles cette semaine. En 1979, lorsque le premier Alien sort et révolutionne le cinéma de science-fiction, personne n'aurait cru qu'il donnerait lieu à une franchise qui perdurerait quarante-cinq ans plus tard. Qui plus est une des plus passionnantes dans sa gestion, où se sont entrechoquées entre autres les visions de David Fincher, James Cameron ou Jean-Pierre Jeunet avant que Ridley Scott ne se la réapproprie pour aller sur un terrain plus ésotérique avec Prometheus ou Alien : Convenant. Avec Alien : Romulus il a confié les commandes à un réalisateur uruguayen qui a déjà relifté d'autres franchises, d'un pertinent remake d'Evil dead à une solide suite à Millenium. Fede Alvarez revient aux sources, que ce soit en situant ce nouvel opus entre le premier Alien et Aliens mais surtout en renouant avec une part purement organique . En ayant recours à minima aux effets numériques, Alien : Romulus ressuscite l'essence même de la saga, cette incarnation ultra-physique de la peur, a travers une course poursuite entre la créature et une poignées d'humains. C'est du moins la promesse faite par les très efficaces et alléchantes quelques séquences montrées en amont de la sortie, laissant penser que ce nouvel épisode n'est pas un vain raval de façade , mais plutôt un inespéré retour aux racines. Bande annonce Alien : Romulus Celui de City of darkness l'était tout autant. A partir d'une immersion dans la citadelle de Kowloon, authentique cour des miracles ayant accueilli tous les parias hong-kongais avant sa destruction dans les années 90, Soi Cheang réinvestit le thriller d'action de l'ex-colonie Britannique. A l'époque, Kowloon avait été démoli dans le cadre de la rétrocession à la Chine, dans un esprit de nettoyage. City of darkness lui restitue un sentiment de fourmilière tant par la profusion de personnages que par de dantesques décors arachnéens se resserrant autour d'une guerre des gangs. De quoi édifier un paradis perdu de cinéma kinétique, entre générosité des scènes de combats et participation de légendes d'un âge d'or révolu, de Sammo Hung, compagnon de Bruce Lee et Jackie Chan, imposant en super méchant à Philip Ng, émérite chorégraphe d'art martiaux. Au delà des phénoménales prouesses physiques, City of darkness fait l'éloge de la transmission d'un code de valeurs, ravivant celui d'un cinéma voyou incroyablement revigoré, tout en fureur et chaos soufflant sur les braises incendiaires d'une identité culturelle hong-kongaise qu'on pensait dissoute dans une production chinoise désormais aux ordres du gouvernement. Et si le personnage central de ce film ultra- épique est un clandestin cherchant asile, City of darkness s'impose clairement comme un refuge sanctuarisé pour tout les nostalgiques du cinéma urbain made in Hong-Kong. In Ep #42Tony and Eddie are on opposite ends of the spectrum again. Tony takes critical pot shots at Ridley Scott's second Alien prequel while Eddie's love for the franchise seems to color all things Alien in rose tinted glasses (there's a joke in here about Xenomorph colored POV style glasses but we can't make it work). Both sides of the argument acknowledge some week spots in this film. Another legendarily ill-equipped crew is just one of those things. The grand questions and take away seems to be - are we willing to deal with some piece meal plots along the way to the direct link to the Alien origin or are we so full of questions/questioning every thematic, problematic circumstance that we just want Scott to call in Damon Lindelof to write the next two films? We'll let you know.

It... isn't pretty. Timothy: "Science Lady" is Karine Oram, played by Carmen Ejogo. Dustin: I can't remember names, you know that. Timothy: "Capable Pilot Lady/Tennessee's Wife" is Maggie Farris, played by Amy Seimetz. Dustin: I liked her, but nope. Not going to stick. Timothy: She was good in Wristcutters: A Love Story and Upstream Color, and she's a director and writer in her own right. Dustin: What are you doing here, with this? Timothy: Well, considering one of the problems with this film is how it is crap at establishing relationships between characters, or even defining most of the characters outside of the jobs they do, making them either interchangeable or making some people - you, for example - have to use nicknames like "Science Lady" to remember what they actually do in the film... Dustin: You decided to try and help me by telling me their names and who played them. You know this doesn't work, right? Beth from THE WALKING DEAD was "Daughter-Fodder" for two years, Tim. Two years. Timothy: I continue to hold out hope. Demián Bichir played Sergeant Lope, the head of security. His character was married to the security guy who got sick and, well, spoilers, I suppose. That guy was Nathaniel Dean, playing Hallett, who we know was married to Lope because the Wikipedia page says so. Dustin: I do know who played the young couple I liked, who did the things on the ship and stuff. That was Jussie Smollett and Callie Hernandez. I don't remember the names of their characters because the film doesn't care about that stuff either. Mindy: So are you two going to sit here and throw shade at the film or just let people cut the chase and hear what you really think about ALIEN: COVENANT? Sheesh. Hey Folks-at-Home?
