The world works in awfully strange ways sometimes. We had been having a blast recording our episodes on the Lucky Stars series, and we were looking forward to discussing the final film of the initial trilogy, Twinkle Twinkle Lucky Stars, for a multitude of reasons. Amongst those, are the stellar action scenes found throughout the film, particularly the finale, in which a trio of deadly assassins take on our lovable bunch of misfits in an epic throwdown! One of the most memorable aspects of this extremely hard-hitting and kinetic sequence is the battle between the legendary Sammo Hung and martial arts maestro Richard Norton. We were scheduled to record on Saturday, but work related events postponed our recording by a couple of days. Little did we know, that within that time frame, our mate Richard would suddenly pass away. Shocked, devastated, and utterly confused by the news, we initially decided to postpone our episode until a later point in time. Upon much reflection though, we ultimately came to the conclusion that we should move forward with the episode. Listen in as we breakdown why we enjoy this film so much, the similarities and differences between it and its predecessors, and our future plans for paying tribute to the wonderful human being that was Richard Norton. Don't forget to subscribe, download, like, and share with your friends! Thanks again for your continued support and we hope you enjoy.

Dragons Forever (Chinese: 飛龍猛將) is a 1988 Hong Kong martial arts action comedy film directed by Sammo Hung, who also starred in the film, and co-directed by Corey Yuen. The film co-stars Jackie Chan, Yuen Biao, Pauline Yeung, Deannie Yip, Yuen Wah, Roy Chiao, and Crystal Kwok. It is the last film in which Hung, Chan and Biao all appeared in together, as later Chan subsequently focused on his solo film career.[3] In the film, a lawyer is hired to discover information that would destroy a fishery owner's reputation, and undermine her legal case against a chemical factory. The lawyer employs two agents to help his cause without informing them of their respective roles in the scheme, resulting in hostile relationships between the agents. The lawyer and his agents turn against their employers when they learn that the factory is a front for the production of narcotics. That's just from Wikipedia cuz I'm in a rush. Episode 7: “TVB's Impact on the Emergence of ‘Hong Kong' and the ‘Hong Konger' Identity" Television Broadcasting Limited (TVB) was founded in 1967 and had, by the 1970s, become a popular and influential entertainment and information program in Hong Kong. Even Hong Kong cinema was directly influenced by the rise of television. Television soon became a training ground for talent in the film industry: successful televisions were often adapted into movies, and it was common for successful television personnel to be introduced into the film industry. Television dramas and news programs also established a distinctive identity for the people of Hong Kong. Cantonese Television even helped shift Hong Kong Cinema's market from being a Mandarin-dominated market to being Cantonese-dominated. In the 1970s, Hong Kong cinema completed a generational transition, with the previous generation of directors and writers retiring from the scene and a new generation of filmmakers from Hong Kong taking over. Notable directors who emerged from this period include John Woo, Sammo Hung, and Tsui Hark, who all established themselves as leading figures in the industry. In addition to new filmmakers, new film genres such as martial arts films, crime films, gangster films, and gambling films also emerged in the 1970s, which had not been seen before. ****************** Follow the hosts: Kay Ho's Instagram: @kayho1430 Po Fung's Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/flash1030/ This episode is part of the "Preserve Yesterday - Back to Lee Theatre VR" project, which was a collaboration with the Hong Kong XR Museum. Outline of Introduction to Hong Kong Film Industry Podcast Part 6 About this series of podcasts, please check here. Episode 6: “The Emergence of Golden Harvest and the Flourishing of the Film Industry in the 1970s Under Free Competition" At the start of the 1970s, the Shaw Brothers Company, with its studios and cinema chains and a massive production volume, seemed like an invincible giant in the film industry. However, it created its formidable competitor: Raymond Chow, a former Shaw Brothers executive. Chow left the company due to disagreements with Mona Fong's management and founded Golden Harvest. Golden Harvest discovered Bruce Lee, took over Cathay Organization's studios, and established its cinema chain. The success of Michael Hui's comedies repeatedly broke box office records. Golden Harvest evolved from a financially struggling company into an internationally renowned giant capable of rivaling Shaw Brothers. It became a pillar of Hong Kong cinema from the 1980s to the 1990s, embodying a legendary success story. In addition to Golden Harvest, several independent film companies achieved significant box office success during the 1970s, bringing fresh ideas to the industry. These included companies like Seasonal Film Corporation and Bo Ho Film Company, which thrived due to the free competition in Hong Kong's film industry. In this sixth episode of the podcast, we divided our discussion into three segments. In the second segment, we covered the following topics: How did Golden Harvest overcome the difficulties following Bruce Lee's sudden death? In the 1970s, Hong Kong society transitioned from traditional to modern, with the film industry reflecting this social change. How did Golden Harvest surpass Shaw Brothers during this transformation?Golden Harvest had many stars. How significant were the influences of Sammo Hung, Michael Hui, John Woo, and Jackie Chan? What are comedy kung fu films? What are some famous works, and how did they influence "Kung Fu Panda"?How did comedy kung fu films help Cantonese-language movies become mainstream in Hong Kong?Besides Golden Harvest, many independent film production companies emerged in the 1970s. Within hours of his funeral, Hong Kong movie studios began to produce hundreds of unauthorized biopics, spin-offs and rip-offs starring a competing roster of Bruce Lee lookalikes. Over the next decade, ‘Bruceploitation' would become a staple of global cinema. Director David Gregory examines this fascinating phenomenon via interviews with Bruce Li, Bruce Le, Bruce Liang and Dragon Lee; martial arts legends like Angela Mao, David Chiang, Phillip Ko and Sammo Hung; and the producers, directors, distributors and experts – along with copious clips from the films themselves – that for the first time reveal the history, controversy and legacy behind one of the most bizarre genres in movie history. Director, cinema aficionado and founder of Severin Films David Gregory (Lost Souls: The Doomed Journey of Richard Stanley's Island of Dr. Moreau) joins us for a spirited conversation on the twisted tale of Bruce Lee's actual career in film, the shadow careers of look-a-likes and the filmmakers willing to push the limits of credibility and propriety to satiate an audience of martial arts cinephiles. This week, Gavin and I get to share our AWESOME experience we had viewing an absolutely AMAZING entry from the golden era of Hong Kong martial arts cinema, ON THE BIG SCREEN! Not only that, it was a rare first time viewing for the both of us! I am talking about the 1990 action epic, ‘Licence to Steal.' Starring Joyce Mina Godenzi (aka Mrs. Sammo Hung) and featuring one of the best supporting casts ever assembled, including superstar Yuen Biao, comedic genius Richard Ng, up and coming martial arts dynamo Colin Chou, World Kickboxing Champion Billy Chow- and that's just to name a few! Directed by veteran Hong Kong stuntman/actor Billy Chan, and produced by Sammo Hung himself, this film features non-stop martial arts action of the highest caliber from start to finish. With fist fights galore, cat and mouse games of master thieves, and an eclectic cast of characters that have to be seen to be believed, this movie has a little something for everyone to enjoy! With a highly captivating opening Kendo battle, and not one, but TWO jaw-dropping final fight scenes, this one will keep you on the edge of your seat from start to finish! We want to thank the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures for putting on this amazing evening of films as part of their moth long tribute to Sammo Hung! We hope they make this an annual tradition and look forward to whichever martial arts star they may decide to feature next year!
