Dons & SPL: Kill Zone

This week the dads tackle Wilson Yip's SPL: Kill Zone — part crime thriller, part tragedy, part full-contact martial-arts clinic. Donnie Yen, Sammo Hung and Simon Yam carry a film that's interested in corruption and consequence as much as it is in breaking bones on camera.First though: Top Five Dons. Unsurprisingly, this goes everywhere. Corleone, TV Dons, gaming Dons, football Dons, and assorted nonsense all make appearances before the lads finally get to the main event.Top Five segment highlights:Classic mob-boss royalty and the unavoidable Godfather referencesDon characters from prestige TV and old-school comedyCurveballs from animation/gaming cultureA healthy amount of side-questing into football and pop-culture triviaOn the main feature:The setup: A terminally ill inspector and his squad target a triad boss after a witness case collapses. The tone: Bleak, cynical, and morally compromised from the jump — this is not a clean heroes-villains story. The action ramp: The dads note it takes its time, then cashes in hard late. The alley fight: Widely discussed as the technical standout (knife vs baton, terrifying pace, almost no wasted movement). The finale: Heavy, vicious, and emotionally costly — no easy triumph, no neat bow. What worked bestPhysical, high-commitment choreography that still holds upSammo Hung as a genuinely intimidating antagonistA darker dramatic spine than many equivalent action filmsReservations discussedPacing in the first stretch can feel deliberate-to-slow depending on moodSome narrative beats are more functional than elegantFinal verdict:Strong recommend. If you're into grimy Hong Kong crime/action hybrids with serious impact, SPL absolutely earns a watch. You can now text us anonymously to leave feedback, suggest future content or simply hurl abuse at us. While sometimes a total disaster (the Sammo antics are NOT GREAT) it also features some extraordinary choreography (from Yuen Biao), particularly in the Japanese version we watched for this episode that has TWO extra fight scenes and closing credits outtakes. These are two vastly different films compared to most of Yuen Biao's filmography, figuratively and actually a departure from the Three Dragons' bread and butter. The Iceman Cometh is a pseudo-Highlander action film with time traveling warriors, and A Kid from Tibet is Yuen Biao's only directorial effort. This week, Eastern Condors takes us back into familiar territory with an artist we never tire of revisiting: Sammo Hung. After covering Mr. Nice Guy and Encounters of the Spooky Kind earlier in 2025, we arrive at our fourth Sammo film on the show—but this time the laughs are traded for gunfire, jungle sweat, and brutal combat.   A stark departure from kung fu comedy and supernatural hijinks, Eastern Condors finds the magnetic Hong Kong giant tackling a grim war-action epic, showcasing yet another facet of his remarkable versatility as both performer and filmmaker. Dirty, dangerous, and unrelentingly physical, this is Sammo operating in full men-on-a-mission mode.   Joining us for the discussion is again Nick Langdon, helping us break down the film's intensity, themes, and place within Sammo's ever-expanding legacy.   Is this the last time Sammo Hung marches onto the show? Not a chance. And stick around—next episode, we're ringing in the season with A Christmas Carol starring George C Scott. Thanks, as always, for listening—and locking in.

The world works in awfully strange ways sometimes. We had been having a blast recording our episodes on the Lucky Stars series, and we were looking forward to discussing the final film of the initial trilogy, Twinkle Twinkle Lucky Stars, for a multitude of reasons. Amongst those, are the stellar action scenes found throughout the film, particularly the finale, in which a trio of deadly assassins take on our lovable bunch of misfits in an epic throwdown! One of the most memorable aspects of this extremely hard-hitting and kinetic sequence is the battle between the legendary Sammo Hung and martial arts maestro Richard Norton. We were scheduled to record on Saturday, but work related events postponed our recording by a couple of days. Little did we know, that within that time frame, our mate Richard would suddenly pass away. Shocked, devastated, and utterly confused by the news, we initially decided to postpone our episode until a later point in time. Upon much reflection though, we ultimately came to the conclusion that we should move forward with the episode. Listen in as we breakdown why we enjoy this film so much, the similarities and differences between it and its predecessors, and our future plans for paying tribute to the wonderful human being that was Richard Norton. Dragons Forever (Chinese: 飛龍猛將) is a 1988 Hong Kong martial arts action comedy film directed by Sammo Hung, who also starred in the film, and co-directed by Corey Yuen. The film co-stars Jackie Chan, Yuen Biao, Pauline Yeung, Deannie Yip, Yuen Wah, Roy Chiao, and Crystal Kwok. It is the last film in which Hung, Chan and Biao all appeared in together, as later Chan subsequently focused on his solo film career.[3] In the film, a lawyer is hired to discover information that would destroy a fishery owner's reputation, and undermine her legal case against a chemical factory. The lawyer employs two agents to help his cause without informing them of their respective roles in the scheme, resulting in hostile relationships between the agents. The lawyer and his agents turn against their employers when they learn that the factory is a front for the production of narcotics. That's just from Wikipedia cuz I'm in a rush. In this special live episode, Jeff and Phil host a post-screening Q&A with Philip Ng, star of the hit Hong Kong action movie Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In. He talks about the film's epic throwback to old school action cinema, the fun of playing a wild card villain like King, working alongside legends like Sammo Hung, and who got injured during the filming of Walled In (and why it was kind of Philip's fault). Special thanks to IW Group and Well Go USA.

--------- Outline of Introduction to Hong Kong Film Industry Podcast Part 7 About this series of podcasts, please check here. Episode 7: “TVB's Impact on the Emergence of ‘Hong Kong' and the ‘Hong Konger' Identity" Television Broadcasting Limited (TVB) was founded in 1967 and had, by the 1970s, become a popular and influential entertainment and information program in Hong Kong. Even Hong Kong cinema was directly influenced by the rise of television. Television soon became a training ground for talent in the film industry: successful televisions were often adapted into movies, and it was common for successful television personnel to be introduced into the film industry. Television dramas and news programs also established a distinctive identity for the people of Hong Kong. Cantonese Television even helped shift Hong Kong Cinema's market from being a Mandarin-dominated market to being Cantonese-dominated. In the 1970s, Hong Kong cinema completed a generational transition, with the previous generation of directors and writers retiring from the scene and a new generation of filmmakers from Hong Kong taking over. Notable directors who emerged from this period include John Woo, Sammo Hung, and Tsui Hark, who all established themselves as leading figures in the industry. In addition to new filmmakers, new film genres such as martial arts films, crime films, gangster films, and gambling films also emerged in the 1970s, which had not been seen before. ****************** Follow the hosts: Kay Ho's Instagram: @kayho1430 Po Fung's Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/flash1030/ This episode is part of the "Preserve Yesterday - Back to Lee Theatre VR" project, which was a collaboration with the Hong Kong XR Museum. It's just me and Devan this week and we get heavy into shapes with Sammo Hung's kung fu classic, THE VICTIM. Devan reiterates her love of weapons, I question the legitimacy of Wilson Tong's "The Foot Doctor" nickname, and I try to explain to Devan the ending of The Thundering Mantis. We also discuss Devan's newfound enjoyment of kung fu cinema and how it differs massively from what she used to think about the genre. Of course, we also answer a smattering of listener quesions, Devan tells an emasculating story about our recent trip to a fair, and more! Enjoy!

A truly jaw-dropping piece of cinema from the mind of Sammo Hung, and it's Yuen Biao's first leading role. Also, Knockabout is Zak and Corey's first true “karate man” movie on PAD, as Eddie Murphy would say in Trading Places lol!
