Part 2 of my conversation with Paul Hoynes picks up with a wild story about Albert Belle and a corked bat. “Hoynsie” shares tales from the 1990s when a new ballpark, powerful lineup, and sterling run of success caused baseball fever to erupt in Cleveland. And you can hear why one of his columns in 2016 sent him into Lake Erie before another World Series run ended in a legendary Game 7. If you missed it, make sure to go back and listen to our part 1 episode with Hoynes, who has been covering Major League Baseball in Cleveland for more than four decades: https://evergreenpodcasts.com/press-box-access/paul-hoynes-part-1-im-sweating-bullets-shaking-trying-to-calm-myself-down#episodeContent Hoynes has been a Guardians/Indians beat writer since 1983 for The News-Herald (1983-84), The Plain Dealer and Cleveland.com (1985 to present). His “Hey Hoynsie” column has been a longtime favorite of readers in northeast Ohio. He is past president of the Baseball Writers Association of America, and The Press Club of Cleveland inducted Hoynes into the Club's Cleveland Journalism Hall of Fame in 2013. Before becoming a baseball writer 41 years ago, he covered the Browns, Cavaliers and high school sports for The Cleveland Press, News-Herald, and Painesville Telegraph. This is the first of a 2-part conversation with Paul Hoynes, who has covered Major League Baseball in Cleveland since 1983. We hit some of the “Hoynsie” greatest hits, including the Hawk Call and the tale of two belts. He tells us about working in hometown, competing (and laughing) on the beat with friends, and riding the rush of deadline. Hoynsie puts us in cavernous Municipal Stadium when the stands were mostly empty and the team was awful in the 1980s. Hear about advice he took from Joe Carter, scuffling with Mel Hall, and sailing the choppy waters around Albert Belle. We even work in a football story: Red Right 88. Sorry, Browns fans. Part 2 comes out April 24 and that episode will pick up when the Indians, now known as the Guardians, began their glorious run in the 1990s. Morgantown, North Carolina, the county seat of Burke County, is now a two-paper town. The nonprofit The Paper proudly reports local news online and in a weekly, Saturday-home-delivery, 30-plus-page full-color print product.   Founder and Publisher Allen VanNoppen is no stranger to news media, having spent his first years out of college as a reporter for the then family-owned local newspaper of record, The Morgantown News Herald, and later at the nearby Greensboro (NC) News & Record. Continuing to write a weekly syndicated column, he left his full-time work as a journalist in 1985 to enter the business world, eventually opening a local marketing agency his children now run. However, as he watched the News Herald be bought and sold over the years, finally being corporately downsized by Lee Enterprises, in August of 2022, he started Morganton Media Group, LLC (MMG) with a dba of The Paper. The Paper's website states they're a “blend of a registered LLC with nonprofit 501(c)3 fiscal sponsors.” And “will be owned by the community through tiered memberships" and "be led by an expert local Board of Directors.” So far, they have hired as their Editor-in-Chief Bill Poteat, a former editor & political reporter for The News Herald, along with others — bringing the newsroom count to eight.  In a recent press release announcing three new hires, The Paper claimed to be "Burke County's only home-delivered, all-local print and digital newspaper." It also claimed, "The Paper was launched on Feb. 4, 2023, to fill a growing local news desert similar to those seen nationally. Sensational community response, including steady increases in advertising and circulation, coupled with charitable contributions, enabled the addition to the reporting staff.” In this episode of "E&P Reports," we take you to Morgantown, North Carolina,  the county seat for Burke County, where Lee Enterprises' News Herald has been publishing for over 120 years. However, it is now a two-newspaper town, as The Paper, a local nonprofit, is in its 36th week of publishing both print and online. Appearing in the broadcast is Allen VanNoppen, The Paper's founder and publisher, who speaks to why he decided to start a competing local printed product, how the business is going more than eight months in and what advice he gives to others who may want to start a local, nonprofit, digital and print news operation.

More about Dearborn Restaurant Week: https://www.dearbornrestaurantweek.com/ If you want to check out The Great Commoner: https://www.instagram.com/greatcommoner/ Then we discuss a couple of stories around town. The mortgage industry is in a down cycle, and Rocket cutting 7,500 employees or so in the last year - basically as much as a small town - may be one of the factors in the downward trend during the week for downtown Detroit restaurants and bars. Listeners and newsletter readers had been telling us stuff had been happening, but now we have a full picture and idea of scale. Plus, downtown Wyandotte is building up, rehabbing an old Federal department store building into retail, restaurant and residential. Both of us have had opportunities to work with many media members over the years. And when an article crossed our computer screens regarding our guest, we were floored! Bonnie Rutledge is the new owner/editor of a community newspaper in eastern Ohio, the Harrison News-Herald. Now, you may not consider that to be “news” - except when she is a “twenty-something”, local English teacher, taking over a newspaper that has been printing since 1815 – over 200 years! Here's what we cover in this episode... Other papers have been purchased by large conglomerates or hedge funds – what would have happened if you hadn't purchased your paper? Is a local paper the “soul” of the community Does democracy fall when local news is lost and/or shifts to “sides”? What are the challenges for those who own media, balancing news/advertising/profit versus the good of the community and fair reporting Is her role different in a smaller community than say the Columbus Dispatch is to Columbus? Or is it just scale/size What changes are occurring in media?  How is media different for different generations? How does social media affect her work? Any surprises since she purchased the paper? How can we afford to have local news? How can we afford to not have local news? Bonnie Rutledge is the publisher and owner of the Harrison News-Herald, a local newspaper covering all of Harrison County, Ohio. The News-Herald, over 200 years old, has doubled its staff and increased subscriptions for the first time in ten years as a result of the new ownership. She is a '20 graduate from Cedarville University, teaches high school English, and manages rental properties alongside her husband Seth, a heavy equipment mechanic. https://www.harrisonnewsherald.com (Bonnie's Website) We would love to hear from you. https://podinbox.com/LFOW (Give us your feedback, or suggest a topic, by leaving us a voice message.) PANAMA CITY – Did you know that the News Herald’s photography department has been writing articles lately? Well we have and in this week’s Shooting the Shot we talk about it. The News Herald has been short staffed for a few months. As we lost reporter after reporter, chief photographer Patti Blake and I took on more responsibility. For a few weeks the majority of news coming out of our newsroom was produced by the paper’s two photographers. On Tuesday, November 5, 2019 I covered a time capsule ceremony at Gulf Coast State College. The college planted a time capsule in 1993 that was supposed to be unearthed in April of this year. Because of extensive repairs around the campus, the ceremony had to be delayed. Before opening the 25-year-old PVC tube full of treasures, the college showed what will go into the next time capsule. In 25 years the college will open a carbon fiber box full of stories, pictures and mementos from Hurricane Michael. You can read the story here.  Patti Blake wrote a story at a spay and neuter event at Operation Spay Bay. The animal castration charity processed nearly 90 cats for A Hope for Santa Rosa County which does not have the facilities for that many animals. She photographed as veterinarians did small surgeries on kittens and took care of them as they woke up after being anesthetized. In her article she goes over the days events and the importance of spaying and neutering pets.  Both Patti Blake and I did study writing in school, but we have spent our careers building our photography skills. These last few months have been a challenge working in a medium that we have not spent the time to becoming experts in. One thing that we both agreed we appreciated is that we liked having total ownership of stories that mater to us the most.  In the coming weeks readers can look forward to reading more by our newest reporters Tony Mixon and Jacqueline Lindsay. https://www.newsherald.com/news/20191105/gulf-coast-state-college-opens-90s-era-time-capsule https://www.newsherald.com/news/20191106/panama-city-clinic-spays-and-neuters-nearly-90-cats-in-day

UFC heavyweight champion Stipe Miocic is defending his title against Francis Ngannou on Saturday night, and News-Herald sports editor Mark Podolski is in Boston to cover the fight. Podolski has known Miocic since the champ was a wrestler for Eastlake North High School and a placekicker for the school's football team, and he has followed Miocic closely throughout his MMA career. In his latest appearance on The Nail, Podolski shares stories from Miocic's high school years, sets the scene at UFC's media day on Thursday, previews the fight as Miocic tries to become the first UFC heavyweight champ to reach three successful title defenses, and gives a rundown on the red-hot, trash talkin' challenger Ngannou. ... Plus: WWE Raw will celebrate its 25th anniversary on Monday night. The guys relive memories of WWE's flagship show, including the time Tom went down to the then-Gund Arena, and was left standing outside without a ticket as a historic episode got underway. News-Herald sports editor Mark Podolski is back for our second annual college football bowl game extravaganza. In a colorful hour-plus, the guys cover: the playoff semifinals, including a potentially tremendous Fiesta Bowl between Ohio State and Clemson, Western Michigan's chances of pulling an upset vs. Wisconsin, which games can lift up a mostly lackluster bowl season, players skipping bowl games, the draft stock of North Carolina QB Mitch Trubisky, and New Year's Day being the latest sports tradition messed up by the (bleeping) NFL.
