fWotD Episode 3364: Lope Martín Welcome to featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia's finest articles.The featured article for Tuesday, 21 July 2026, is Lope Martín.Lope Martín (marooned 21 July 1566) was an Afro-Portuguese maritime pilot who successfully navigated across the Pacific Ocean east–west and then west–east, becoming the first to complete the return voyage from Asia to the Americas. Martín was a free mulatto from Lagos, Portugal, who became a licensed pilot in Spain. He was contracted for Miguel López de Legazpi's expedition from Mexico to the Philippines and was designated the sole pilot of a patache called the San Lucas. Martín and the San Lucas separated from the rest of the fleet after ten days and sailed through the Marshall Islands and the Caroline Islands before arriving at the Philippines in January 1565. Without the rest of the fleet, Martín then embarked upon the return voyage from Asia to the Americas, which had been attempted but never completed; the San Lucas arrived in Mexico in August 1565.In spite of Martín's accomplishments, the Real Audiencia of Mexico soon ordered him to return to the Philippines and appear before Legazpi, who was expected to execute him for having allegedly deserted the rest of his fleet. Martín's ship, the San Jerónimo, departed Mexico in May 1566; recognizing the danger that he faced, Martín led two successive mutinies and took command of the ship. Con motivo del centenario del nacimiento de Paco Rabal, recientemente recordado con un emotivo homenaje en la Academia de Cine, recuperamos este programa emitido originalmente el 17 de febrero de 2023.Francisco Rabal Valera llegó al mundo un día de la mujer, el 8 de marzo de 1926, entre minas y sobre el mar de Águilas (Murcia). Su vida fue la pasión por actuar, porque puso todo el corazón en conseguirlo y en llegar a lo más alto. Y ese empeño también le proporcionó una intensa vida de amistad y amor con muchas personas que le dejaron huella. Así le ocurrió con su compañera de vida, la actriz Asunción Balaguer, a la que conoció al incorporarse a la compañía Lope de Vega de José Tamayo y con la que muy pronto se uniría sentimentalmente para toda su vida. De esa unión nacieron sus dos hijos: Teresa y Benito.Rabal se crió en el coto minero murciano de la Cuesta de Gos, dentro de una familia de extracción social muy modesta. Gente de pocas letras, pero de muchas luces; especialmente su padre, Benito Rabal, un minero de bondad e inteligencia innatas. Su hermano mayor, Damián, además de proporcionarle sus primeros libros, fue su referencia ideológica, compañero de futuras juergas y hasta su representante artístico. De niño y adolescente probó como ayudante de alguacil, vendedor ambulante de chucherías y aprendiz de bombonero. Ya de joven, logró entrar de auxiliar electricista en los Estudios Chamartín. Hombre de suerte, estuvo en el lugar oportuno y en el momento preciso cuando el director Rafael Gil hizo una prueba de luz con él sustituyendo a Fernando Rey. Su cara, joven y atractiva, daba juego. Su voz rotunda, su simpatía arrolladora y su insistencia hicieron el resto. Y el resto son varios cientos de películas: de 'Reina santa' (1947), la primera con frase, a 'Divertimento' junto a Federico Luppi, ya en el año de su muerte, 2001. También son numerosísimas las obras de teatro. De 'La muerte de un viajante' o 'Julio César' en los años 50 a 'Viejos tiempos', de Harold Pinter, en 1974. Destaca Rabal entre los cientos de papeles que encarnó los de Juncal, de la serie televisiva homónima; Azarías, de 'Los santos inocentes'; y Goya maduro en 'Goya en Burdeos'.En este documental, con guion de Juan Ballesteros y diseño sonoro de Mayca Aguilera, participan familiares, amigos y compañeros; su hija, la también actriz Teresa Rabal, y Juan Ignacio García Garzón, autor de la biografía 'Paco Rabal. Este fin de semana, el Teatro Principal de Zaragoza acoge el estreno de La vengadora de las mujeres, una obra de madurez de Lope de Vega dirigida por Carlos Martín y protagonizada por Itziar Miranda. El montaje, coproducido por el Teatro del Temple y la Compañía Nacional de Teatro Clásico, inicia en Zaragoza su recorrido antes de viajar al Teatro de la Comedia. En Aragón Cultura hablamos con su director, Carlos Martín, en los días previos al estreno, sobre un texto sorprendentemente vigente que dialoga con el presente y revisa, desde el Siglo de Oro, cuestiones de poder, identidad y relaciones entre hombres y mujeres.

Con buena razón se ha dicho acerca de las Rimas sacras, como las siguientes del poeta español Lope de Vega, que «contienen, sin disputa, algunos de los más bellos y emocionantes sonetos religiosos de la poesía española»1: ... El puro y manso Jesús, que el Bautista en el Jordán llamó Cordero de Dios, se quiere sacrificar. . . . . . . . . . . Mucho le pesa la cruz, los pecados mucho más, con ellos ha dado en tierra, que no los puede llevar. . . . . . . . . . . Cayó Cristo, y por la frente, con el golpe desigual, se le entraron las espinas lo que faltaban de entrar. . . . . . . . . . . Suspira el manso Cordero, ayuda pidiendo está, y a palos, golpes y coces le vuelven a levantar. . . . . . . . . . . Quitáronle la corona, y abriéronse tantas fuentes, que todo el cuerpo divino cubre la sangre que vierten. Al despegarle la ropa las heridas reverdecen, pedazos de carne y sangre salieron entre los pliegues. . . . . . . . . . . Ya clavan la diestra mano, haciendo tal resistencia el hierro entrando el martillo, que parece que le pesa. Los pies divinos traspasan, y cuando el verdugo yerra de dar en el clavo el golpe, en la carne santa acierta. . . . . . . . . . . Cayó la viga en el hoyo, y antes de tocar la tierra, desgarrándose las manos dio en el pecho la cabeza. . . . . . . . . . . Unos dicen que, si es rey, de la cruz descienda y baje; y otros que, salvando a muchos, a sí no pudo salvarse. . . . . . . . . . . Viendo, pues, Jesús que todo ya comenzaba a acabarse, Sed tengo, dijo, que tiene sed de que el hombre se salve. Corrió un hombre y puso luego a sus labios celestiales en una caña una esponja llena de hiel y vinagre. . . . . . . . . . . ... A su Padre Eterno mira, abriendo los ojos santos... con voz poderosa dice, cielos y tierra temblando: Mi espíritu, Padre mío, pongo en tus sagradas manos. Rompióse el velo del templo, cayeron los montes altos, abriéronse los sepulcros, y hasta las piedras hablaron. Mas llamando encantamientos el pueblo tales milagros, quebrarle quieren los huesos que sólo quedaban sanos. Y como le hallaron muerto, por ir seguro, un soldado puso la lanza en el ristre arremetiendo el caballo. Y abrió por el santo pecho tanta herida a Cristo santo, que se le vio el corazón... que en obras [se apreció] claro.... . . . . . . . . . . ... Un ejército furioso, todo de testigos falsos, donde es capitán la envidia, y el alférez el engaño, de acero, miedo y mentiras para sólo un hombre armados, a Cristo presenta a Anás puesto a la garganta un lazo. «¿Quién eres, hombre? —le dice—. ¿De qué vives? ¿Qué es tu trato? ¿Qué discípulos te siguen? ¿En qué ciencias eres sabio?» Jesús, de paciencia ejemplo, responde, los ojos bajos, con ser el más alto espejo de su Padre soberano: «Yo siempre hablé claramente, con mi doctrina enseñando en público, que en secreto no es la comisión que traigo. »¿Qué me preguntas a mí? Pues que puedes preguntarlo a tantos que me han oído; que ellos saben lo que trato.» «¿Así respondes?», le dijo, alta la mano, un soldado, y dio a Cristo un bofetón que dejó el cielo temblando. «Si hablé mal, da testimonio —responde el Cordero manso—, y si bien, ¿por qué me hieres?» ¡Ay, cielos, vengad su agravio! . . . . . . . . . . Cristo mío de mi vida, ¿cómo si soy el esclavo señalan tu hermoso rostro los dedos de aquella mano? Bendiga tu amor el cielo, que yo, mi Jesús, no basto, pues siendo los yerros míos, quieres Tú tener los clavos. [Por ti perdonar prometo]... a quien me hubiere injuriado, imitando la respuesta de tus labios soberanos. . . . . . . . . . . ... Perdonaremos injurias, pues Tú nos has enseñado a pedir que nos perdonen del modo que perdonamos.1 Así describe el poeta español Lope de Vega las afrentas que sufrió Jesús de Nazaret la noche en que fue arrestado y sometido a juicio ante el sumo sacerdote Anás. Según el filólogo José Manuel Blecua, vigesimonoveno director de la Real Academia Española, fue «la honda crisis que llevó a Lope al sacerdocio» lo que a su vez lo llevó a publicar sus Rimas sacras2 en 1614. Lope mismo lo reconoce en el «Soneto Primero» de la obra, como sigue: Cuando me paro a contemplar mi estado y a ver los pasos por donde he venido, me espanto de que un hombre tan perdido a conocer su error haya llegado. Cuando miro los años que he pasado, la divina razón puesta en olvido, conozco que piedad del cielo ha sido no haberme en tanto mal precipitado.3 Con razón que al poeta le parezca tan injusto que sea Jesucristo y no él quien tenga que soportar semejantes afrentas. Lope es un hombre débil, como los demás sacerdotes,4 esclavo de sus propios errores. En cambio, Cristo es nuestro sumo sacerdote «hecho perfecto para siempre... santo, irreprochable, puro [y] apartado de los pecadores».5 Más vale que, así como aquel autor de las Rimas sacras, también nosotros reconozcamos que somos pecadores. Para ello, viajaremos (de forma metafórica) al siglo XVII, la época conocida como el Siglo de Oro. Este periodo fue un tiempo de gran esplendor cultural en España. Florecieron la literatura, el teatro y la pintura, y se consagraron autores como Miguel de Cervantes, Lope de Vega, Góngora y Quevedo. Aunque se llame "Siglo de Oro", en realidad duró más de cien años. Fue una era de enorme creatividad, pero también de fuertes discusiones entre escritores. Una de las más célebres fue la rivalidad entre Góngora y Quevedo.

His first Keeneland G1 win came in a thrilling edition of the Turf Mile Stakes during the 2024 Fall Meet and returned in the Spring of 2025 to take the Grade 1 Maker's Mark Mile, clearing the field by over four lengths earning a 104 Beyer Speed Figure. He retires with eight wins - three at the Grade 1 level, seven graded stakes wins overall, and earnings of nearly $2,000,000.“Carl Spackler is unquestionably the best male turf miler I've ever trained. Not only is he fast, sound, and perfectly made, he also has an incredibly calm temperament that trainers dream of,” said trainer Chad Brown, “I will definitely be in the marketplace buying his best looking offspring.”A son of Lope de Vega, the sire of 21 G1 winners and a top five European sire in 2025, Carl Spackler is out of the G2 Goldikova S. winner Zindaya, by More Than Ready. Zindaya is a half sister to G1 Jamaica H. winner Western Aristocrat. Carl Spackler's full sister Sandtrap, is already G3 placed at two.“Lope de Vega has been a dominant force in racing since he was named European Champion First-Crop Sire and has made a global impact. While Shakespeare was reshaping English drama, a parallel theatrical revolution was unfolding in Spain. During the Spanish Golden Age, playwright Lope de Vega pioneered the comedia nueva, a bold new dramatic form that broke classical rules in favor of fast-paced plots, emotional intensity, and popular appeal. In this episode, scholar and translator Barbara Fuchs shares how the theatrical innovations of Lope de Vega, Pedro Calderón de la Barca, Tirso de Molina, Ana Caro Mallén de Soto, and others, including a three-act structure, blended genres, and complex female roles, helped redefine early modern theater and influenced the kinds of stories told on the English stage. Fuchs traces the rich cultural exchange between Spain and England and the work that she is doing now with Diversifying the Classics to bring plays in Spanish from both sides of the Atlantic to new audiences. Fuchs also discusses her adaptation for young audiences of de Vega's Fuente Ovejuna, a powerful story of collective resistance, whichwill be featured at the Folger's Reading Room Festival on Saturday, January 24. Her Theater of Lockdown: Digital and Distanced Performance in a time of Pandemic, one of the first studies of how theater was transformed by COVID-19, was published by Methuen in September 2021. She is currently working on a translation and critical edition of Ginés Pérez de Hita's Las guerras civiles de Granada with Payton Phillips Quintanilla. In 2021, Professor Fuchs served as President of the Modern Language Association. She was recently awarded the inaugural “Premio Ñ” from the Instituto Cervantes, for the promotion of Spanish language and culture.
