Para ello, viajaremos (de forma metafórica) al siglo XVII, la época conocida como el Siglo de Oro. Este periodo fue un tiempo de gran esplendor cultural en España. Florecieron la literatura, el teatro y la pintura, y se consagraron autores como Miguel de Cervantes, Lope de Vega, Góngora y Quevedo. Aunque se llame "Siglo de Oro", en realidad duró más de cien años. Fue una era de enorme creatividad, pero también de fuertes discusiones entre escritores. Una de las más célebres fue la rivalidad entre Góngora y Quevedo.

Félix Lope de Vega y Carpio (1562–1635) fue uno de los más grandes escritores del Siglo de Oro español y una de las figuras más destacadas de la literatura universal. Nació en Madrid y fue contemporáneo de Cervantes, Quevedo y Góngora. Se le conoce sobre todo por su enorme contribución al teatro, aunque también escribió poesía y prosa. Lope de Vega tuvo una vida apasionada y llena de contrastes. Estudió en la Universidad de Alcalá y desde joven mostró un talento prodigioso para la escritura. Sirvió en la armada y participó en la expedición de la Armada Invencible contra Inglaterra (1588).Su vida amorosa fue turbulenta; tuvo numerosos romances y varios hijos, tanto legítimos como ilegítimos. En su madurez se ordenó sacerdote (1614), pero continuó vinculado al mundo literario y cortesano. Lope revolucionó el teatro español, rompiendo con las normas clásicas de unidad de tiempo, lugar y acción. Creó la “comedia nueva”, un tipo de teatro popular que mezclaba lo trágico con lo cómico y buscaba ante todo entretener al público. Entre sus obras más conocidas se encuentran:“Fuenteovejuna”“El perro del hortelano”“El caballero de Olmedo”“La dama boba”En poesía, cultivó tanto el verso lírico como el épico. Algunos de sus poemas más destacados están en:“Rimas” (1602)“Rimas sacras” (1614)“Rimas humanas y divinas del licenciado Tomé de Burguillos” (1634) Lope de Vega escribió más de 1.500 comedias, de las cuales se conservan unas 400, además de novelas, poemas épicos y textos religiosos. Fue llamado “Fénix de los ingenios” y “Monstruo de la naturaleza” por su talento y su asombrosa productividad. Murió en Madrid en 1635, a los 73 años, dejando una huella inmensa en la literatura española.

Este año se celebran los 450 años de historia del Teatro Rojas de Toledo. Escuchamos al actual director del Teatro, Paco Plaza, que nos recuerda como los cómicos ocuparon en su día los alrededodores del mercado, y ese fue el inicio del teatro del que hablamos. While Shakespeare was reshaping English drama, a parallel theatrical revolution was unfolding in Spain. During the Spanish Golden Age, playwright Lope de Vega pioneered the comedia nueva, a bold new dramatic form that broke classical rules in favor of fast-paced plots, emotional intensity, and popular appeal. In this episode, scholar and translator Barbara Fuchs shares how the theatrical innovations of Lope de Vega, Pedro Calderón de la Barca, Tirso de Molina, Ana Caro Mallén de Soto, and others, including a three-act structure, blended genres, and complex female roles, helped redefine early modern theater and influenced the kinds of stories told on the English stage. Fuchs traces the rich cultural exchange between Spain and England and the work that she is doing now with Diversifying the Classics to bring plays in Spanish from both sides of the Atlantic to new audiences. Fuchs also discusses her adaptation for young audiences of de Vega's Fuente Ovejuna, a powerful story of collective resistance, whichwill be featured at the Folger's Reading Room Festival on Saturday, January 24. She is also one of the editors for the Norton Anthology of World Literature (2012, 2018). Her Theater of Lockdown: Digital and Distanced Performance in a time of Pandemic, one of the first studies of how theater was transformed by COVID-19, was published by Methuen in September 2021. She is currently working on a translation and critical edition of Ginés Pérez de Hita's Las guerras civiles de Granada with Payton Phillips Quintanilla. In 2021, Professor Fuchs served as President of the Modern Language Association. She was recently awarded the inaugural “Premio Ñ” from the Instituto Cervantes, for the promotion of Spanish language and culture.

Ok, catch up part two. Now, in this episode, we get to meet singer-songwriter Edith Frost. Edith released her first record in about twenty years this past winter, called In Space, and in late spring I got the chance to chat with the underground folk icon all about the album, her road back to making music, studying jazz chords, and more. We talked about her infamous Twitter ban, the delights of Drag City (her longtime record label), and beyond. It was such a lovely and bubbly chat with a buoyant and personable figure, someone whose music has been with me probably since that 2005 record came out, so it was great to be able to link up for an hour. I regret that it took so long to share, but, especially as I am a totally one-man show, occasionally that's just how it all works out. And I'm thrilled to get to share it with you now.
