Today's poem shows us a teacher wrestling with the notion of “graduation.” Happy reading.Bill Knott was born on February 17, 1940, in Carson City, Michigan. When he was seven years old, his mother died in childbirth, and his father passed away three years later. He grew up in an orphanage in Mooseheart, Illinois, and on an uncle's farm. In the late 1950s, he joined the U.S. Army and, after serving his full enlistment, was honorably discharged in 1960.In the early 1960s, Knott moved to Chicago, where he worked as a hospital orderly. There, he became involved in the poetry scene and worked with John Logan, Paul Carroll, Charles Simic, and other poets. He published his first book, The Naomi Poems, Book One: Corpse and Beans (Big Table, 1968), under the pseudonym Saint Geraurd in 1968. He also published Nights of Naomi (Barn Dream Press, 1971) and Auto-necrophilia (Big Table, 1971) under the same name.Knott went on to publish several poetry collections under his own name, including I Am Flying into Myself: Selected Poems, 1960–2014 (Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 2017), edited by Thomas Lux; Laugh at the End of the World: Collected Comic Poems 1969–1999 (BOA Editions, 2000); Becos (Random House, 1983); and Love Poems to Myself (Barn Dream Press, 1974). He also self-published many books and posted all of his poems online, where they could be read for free.Of his work, Lux writes, “As dense as some of his poems can be, they rarely defeat comprehensibility. Some are so lucid and straightforward, they are like a punch in the gut, or one's first great kiss…. His intense focus on every syllable, and the sound of every syllable in relation to nearby sounds, is so skilled that the poems often seem casual: Art hides art.”Knott taught at Emerson College for over twenty-five years. He received the Iowa Poetry Prize, a Guggenheim Fellowship, and two fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts, among other honors and awards. He died on March 12, 2014, in Bay City, Michigan.-bio via Academy of American Poets This is a public episode. "Swept Away" Is this an emergency episode of the podcast? Kind of. And by kind of, I mean...yes. It is. It's actually quite urgent because art is at stake and without art, we have nothing. This show is about the current creative moment in an artist's life and on that front, this episode couldn't be more on the nose. My guest today on the show is currently starring in a Broadway production that, in spite of its massive critical praise, is set to shut down prematurely on December 29th. We have a lot to go over, but the thesis of the show today is we don't want this production to get Swept Away. Adrian Blake Enscoe is currently starring on Broadway in the musical Swept Away, which is based on the Avett Brothers' album Mignonette and written by John Logan. Centered around a group of sailors who have capsized while on a whale expedition, the show opened up to rave reviews from The Washington Post, Entertainment Weekly, The Wall Street Journal, The Daily Beast, The Wrap and Deadline. So the question is, if the show has been crushing it, why is it closing early? Well, that's what we're here to talk about today. The New York-born Enscoe has been on the show before with his band Bandits On The Run, and he's a lovely guy and it's great to see him again, but this chat is a sobering reminder that those who create art need you to support it. www.sweptawaymusical.com www.bombshellradio.com (http://www.bombshellradio.com) www.stereoembersmagazine.com (http://www.stereoembersmagazine.com) www.alexgreenbooks.com (http://www.alexgreenbooks.com) IG: @emberspodcast Bluelsky: @emberspodcast Email: editor@stereoembersmagazine.com (mailto:editor@stereoembersmagazine.com)

Ridley Scott's Gladiator (2000) wasn't just a movie—it was an event, a cultural phenomenon that revived the sword-and-sandal epic for a modern audience. In this week's Born to Watch podcast episode, we take a deep dive with our Gladiator (2000) Movie Review, a timeless classic that set the bar for historical dramas, earning critical acclaim and five Academy Awards, including Best Picture. With stunning visuals, a poignant score, and unforgettable performances, Gladiator remains one of cinema's greatest achievements. The Story That Defined a GenerationAt its core, Gladiator is a revenge tale wrapped in the grandeur of the Roman Empire. Russell Crowe stars as Maximus Decimus Meridius, a loyal Roman general betrayed by the scheming Commodus, played with unsettling intensity by Joaquin Phoenix. Stripped of his rank, family, and freedom, Maximus is forced into the brutal world of gladiatorial combat. As he rises through the ranks of the arena, he becomes a beacon of hope and rebellion, culminating in a battle not just for his life but for the soul of Rome itself. What makes Gladiator resonate so deeply is its ability to blend intimate human drama with epic stakes. Maximus's vendetta against Commodus intertwines with his larger quest for justice, making every clash in the Colosseum emotionally charged. The screenplay, penned by David Franzoni, John Logan, and William Nicholson, is poetic and visceral, delivering lines like “Are you not entertained?” that have become iconic in pop culture.A Visual and Sonic MasterpieceRidley Scott is a director known for his meticulous attention to detail, and Gladiator is no exception. The film's portrayal of ancient Rome is nothing short of breathtaking. Using a mix of practical sets, CGI, and miniatures, Scott and cinematographer John Mathieson recreated the grandeur of the Colosseum and the chaotic energy of Rome's streets with staggering realism.Equally stunning is Hans Zimmer and Lisa Gerrard's haunting score. The music perfectly captures the film's shifting tones, from the mournful longing of Maximus's loss to the triumphant swell of his victories. Tracks like “Now We Are Free” remain synonymous with the film's legacy, blending orchestral power with ethereal vocals to evoke an almost mythic quality.A Performance for the AgesRussell Crowe's portrayal of Maximus is the beating heart of Gladiator. His transformation from a respected general to a vengeful gladiator is physically demanding and emotionally rich. Crowe embodies Maximus with a quiet intensity, delivering a performance that won him the Academy Award for Best Actor. His ability to convey a deep well of grief, determination, and defiance elevates the character into the realm of timeless cinematic heroes.Joaquin Phoenix's Commodus, on the other hand, is a masterclass in villainy. He's not just evil for the sake of it—he's deeply insecure, desperate for approval, and chillingly manipulative. Phoenix walks a delicate line, making Commodus repulsive yet compelling, a character you can't look away from, no matter how despicable his actions. The supporting cast, including Connie Nielsen as the morally torn Lucilla and Richard Harris as the wise Emperor Marcus Aurelius, rounds out the ensemble with gravitas and depth. Even in smaller roles, the film excels in giving its characters memorable moments that add richness to the world.Themes That Echo Through HistoryGladiator isn't just a feast for the senses—it's a film that grapples with timeless themes. Justice, loyalty, and the corrupting nature of power all play pivotal roles in the story. Maximus's journey is as much about reclaiming his honour as it is toppling a corrupt regime. His mantra, “What we do in life echoes in eternity,” underscores the film's meditation on legacy and the impact of our actions. The movie also speaks to the enduring appeal of underdog stories. Maximus's rise from slave to hero taps into a universal desire for justice and redemption, making his triumphs all the more cathartic. At the same time, the film doesn't shy away from the brutality of its world, reminding us that victory often comes at a high cost.A Lasting LegacyWhen Gladiator hit theatres in 2000, it reignited interest in historical epics, paving the way for films like Troy, 300, and Kingdom of Heaven. But few have matched its impact. Its influence extends beyond the genre, inspiring video games, TV series, and countless parodies in pop culture. The film's success also cemented Ridley Scott's reputation as a visionary director and launched Russell Crowe into superstardom. It remains a benchmark for storytelling and craftsmanship, a movie that feels as fresh and powerful today as it did over two decades ago.Why We Still Love GladiatorSo why does Gladiator still hold such a special place in our hearts? Part of it is the sheer spectacle—few films manage to combine action, drama, and historical detail so seamlessly. But more than that, it's the emotional core of the story. Maximus's journey is one of loss, perseverance, and ultimate redemption, themes that resonate universally.Watching Gladiator is an experience that lingers long after the credits roll. Whether it's the breathtaking battles, the nuanced performances, or the hauntingly beautiful score, every element works in harmony to create something truly unforgettable.Final ThoughtsOur latest Born to Watch podcast episode celebrates everything that makes Gladiator a masterpiece. From its technical achievements to its emotional depth, the film is a triumph in every sense of the word. It's a reminder of why we go to the movies—to be moved, thrilled, and inspired. If you haven't revisited Gladiator lately, now is the perfect time. As Maximus would say, “Strength and Honour”—this movie delivers both in spades.

This week we're watching our fiancée die in increasingly hilarious ways, as we kick off our time-travel theme month SepTIMEber with an early 2000s forgotbuster that's better left in the past. It's 2002's The Time Machine, directed by Simon Wells, written by John Logan, and starring Guy Pearce, Jeremy Irons, Orlando Jones, Mark Addy, Samantha Mumba, Omero Mumba and Sienna Guillory. The story of a man driven mad by loss and the desire to change the past, it's a movie that was directed by H.G. Wells' great-grandson, a somewhat notable name in 90s animation tasked with making what would prove to be his one and only live-action feature. While there are a handful of technically impressive elements on display here, we're not gonna lie: this was a rough watch, a tough start for what we hope will be rip-roaring month of fun for the next three weeks. If you'd like to watch the movie before listening along to our discussion, which this week we absolutely do not recommend, well... good luck, babe! The Time Machine is not streaming anywhere north of the border, and Hayley had to watch it on a weird Chinese pirate video website that undoubtedly loaded her computer with viruses. Other works discussed in this episode include Adam Sandler: Love You, Adam Sandler: 100% Fresh, Don't Mess With The Zohan, The Wedding Singer, Strange Darling, Cuckoo, Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Alice in Wonderland (2010), Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Conquest of the Planet of the Apes, Back to the Future 2, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, Avengers: Endgame, L.A. Confidential, Memento, Mars Needs Moms, and An American Tail: Fievel Goes West. We'll be back next Friday as SepTIMEber continues with a rare misfire from the late great Richard Donner, as we finally catch up with 2003's Timeline, starring Paul Walker, Frances O'Connor and Gerard Butler. Timeline is not currently streaming in Canada, though perhaps our American listeners will have better luck with that. Until then, we'll see you at the movies!!

Serving as a sequel to Gladiator (2000), the film was written by David Scarpa, from a story by Peter Craig and Scarpa, and stars Paul Mescal, Pedro Pascal, Connie Nielsen, May Calamawy and Denzel Washington. It was produced by Scott Free Productions in association with Red Wagon Entertainment for Paramount Pictures. The story follows Lucius, the former heir to the Roman Empire, who becomes a gladiator after his home is invaded by the Roman army, led by general Marcus Acacius, during the reign of co-emperors Caracalla and Geta.A sequel to Gladiator was discussed as early as June 2001, with David Franzoni and John Logan set to return as screenwriters. Over the next few years, Scott offered occasional updates, including the possible involvement of the original film's lead actor, Russell Crowe, and plot ideas around the Roman afterlife and different historical time periods. Development was halted when DreamWorks sold the rights to the property to Paramount in 2006. The film was finally announced in 2018, and Mescal was hired in the lead role in January 2023, with a script by Scarpa. The rest of the cast signed on over the next several months, and filming took place between June 2023 and January 2024, with a five-month hiatus due to the 2023 Hollywood labor disputes (including the 2023 actors strike). Gladiator II is scheduled to be released internationally, including the United Kingdom, on November 15, 2024, and later in the United States and Canada on November 22.This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 01:34 UTC on Wednesday, 10 July 2024.For the full current version of the article, see Gladiator II on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm neural Aria.

Edward Estlin (E.E.) Cummings was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts. He attended the Cambridge Latin High School, where he studied Latin and Greek. Cummings earned both his BA and MA from Harvard, and his earliest poems were published in Eight Harvard Poets (1917). As one of the most innovative poets of his time, Cummings experimented with poetic form and language to create a distinct personal style. A typical Cummings poem is spare and precise, employing a few key words eccentrically placed on the page. Some of these words were invented by Cummings, often by combining two common words into a new synthesis. He also revised grammatical and linguistic rules to suit his own purposes, using such words as “if,” “am,” and “because” as nouns, for example, or assigning his own private meanings to words. Despite their nontraditional form, Cummings' poems came to be popular with many readers. “No one else,” Randall Jarrell claimed, “has ever made avant-garde, experimental poems so attractive to the general and the special reader.” By the time of his death in 1962 Cummings held a prominent position in 20th-century poetry. John Logan in Modern American Poetry: Essays in Criticism called him “one of the greatest lyric poets in our language.” Stanley Edgar Hyman wrote in Standards: A Chronicle of Books for Our Time: “Cummings has written at least a dozen poems that seem to me matchless. Three are among the great love poems of our time or any time.” Malcolm Cowley admitted in the Yale Review that Cummings “suffers from comparison with those [poets] who built on a larger scale—Eliot, Aiken, Crane, Auden among others—but still he is unsurpassed in his special field, one of the masters.”-bio via Poetry Foundation Get full access to The Daily Poem Podcast at dailypoempod.substack.com/subscribe
