When I first met Jay, he was the drummer in one of the most popular Philly bands of the 2000's - Fat City Reprise. He would later sit behind the kit in the last lineup of IKE and also play drums on all of records I did with John & Brittany. He currently still played with our pal Brett Talley in their cover band Bangarang and on Brett's prolific solo catalog. Our convo at Olga's runs the gamut from some of my other, dare I say, more niche podcast ideas, to our embrace of awkwardness, to an overview of his journey as a musician. Lately, he been reconnecting with his former Fat City bandmates Mike Vivas and Nick Anastasi in a new project called Honey Butter (although, as you'll hear, Vivas has been coyly non-committal ;) I had an absolute blast talking with Jaybles and hope you enjoy listening in!!

In this “inaugural” episode of “Talking At The Diner,” John goes to the Dining Car in N.E. PHL with longtime “fixer” and bandmate from both IKE and the Caulfields - Brett Talley. Topics of discussion include: Brettman's preference for “well done” fries, his issues with condiments that are not ketchup, the state of the upcoming Caulfields concert movie 26 Candles (which Brett is directing and editing), the significance of his Nine Inch Nails tattoo, his musical origin story, and more!  Annotations..  A number of people are named or referred to with no further context, so for those who are new to John & Brett's musical universe, here is a handy reference guide (hopefully in order of appearance):  Frank Lafaro - Longtime studio client and confidant of Brett's. Frank is the frontman of the Doo-wop group Frankie & the Fashions, which formed in the early 60's before all four members went off to fight in Nam. Sometime in the 2010's, Frank offered to “treat John to lunch” at the Dining Car for the purpose of “picking his brain” regarding the music business, but, in fact, just needed help setting up a YouTube account. At the end of the meal, the diner's then-cash-only policy, coupled with an out-of-order ATM, led to John having to pick up the tab.  Phil - Phil Murphy, lead singer of Brett's band Outset, as well as the front man of Bangarang, his cover band in which Brett plays lead guitar.  Sue / Susie - Susie Steen, bass player in Outset, IKE v2.0, and mother of Brett's son.  Joann Schmidt - Bass player in IKE v1.0, who gives John “lighthearted shit” about the number of songs on the band's third album Where To Begin.  Jason Miraglia - Drummer in IKE v2.0 and Bangarang, who, like Brett, is an avid Pearl Jam fan.

John Faye has been in the music business, in many ways, for over three decades. His impressive musical resume dates back to his major label days fronting '90s alt-rockers The Caulfields (whose single "Devil's Diary" cracked the modern rock top-40, and whose album tracks landed on soundtracks for Disney's "The Babysitter's Club" and "Melrose Place"), to his first solo foray The John Faye Power Trip, which morphed into IKE (who put out 6 full-length records from 2003-2011), to his punk/garage-rock influenced duo John & Brittany (who gained notoriety on the Sirius/XM channel "Little Steven's Underground Garage"), to John Faye & Those Meddling Kids!, and now once again with the reunited Caulfields.  John's upcoming memoir, tentatively titled Days That Came And Went, is scheduled to be published sometime in 2021. http://www.johnfaye.com/ Brett Talley's outstanding musical career includes his two years as lead guitarist and producer for the Philly based pop-rock act, OutSet, lead guitarist for one of Philadelphia's most popular rock outfits, IKE, The Caulfields, and now as a solo artist. Brett also performs as lead guitarist and secondary vocalist in the Philadelphia cover band Bangarang. Brett's most recent solo effort, Perpetual States, is a personal statement of loss and discovery. “I view it as a loose concept album with themes being the overarching stories of birth, death, and rebirth", he says.   http://thatmusicmag.com/perpetual-states-a-walk-with-brett-talley/

Rethinking Youth Ministry | A podcast for youth ministry leaders, pastors, volunteers, and anyone who cares about students

There are a lot of things competing with youth group attendance, and for many youth leaders, there's no greater competitor than sports and athletics. Whether it's travel baseball, swim meets, or soccer tournaments, when our students prioritize sports over church, it feels like we're losing them. But are we? This week, join Brett Talley, Ashley Bohinc, Stuart Hall, and Dan Scott as they discuss how to survive the competition and how ministry leaders should respond to the growing tension.

On this week’s Versus Trump holiday spectacular, it's all judges, all the time. Charlie, Jason, and Easha take a closer look at a number of the President's judicial nominees—confirmed, pending, and withdrawn—to examine what might happen to Versus Trump cases in years to come.Charlie, Easha, and Jason begin the discussion with a quick overview of the structure of the federal court system and talk about the importance of Trump's nominations to the Court of Appeals and District Court. Charlie then starts off the discussion of individual judges by talking about confirmed appellate judges Joan Larsen and Stephanos Bibas, whom Charlie believes are fairly mainstream conservatives. Jason then brings up Matthew Peterson, a district court nominee who withdrew after being unable to answer basic questions about trial court procedure. Next, Easha offers up commentary on the confirmation process of former Notre Dame Law Professor Amy Barrett, before the group turns to the other two withdrawn nominees, Jeff Mateer and Brett Talley, and compares them to several other judges whose confirmations appear to be going smoothly. They end the episode with their big takeaways from the first year of nominations. There's also a surprise holiday offer to our listeners at the end of the episode.
