David Dastmalchian joins Nerdtropolis Mayor Sean Tajipour on Reel Insights to dive deep into Dust Bunny, Bryan Fuller's dark, whimsical, and emotionally rich feature directorial debut starring Mads Mikkelsen, Sophie Sloan, Sigourney Weaver, and Dastmalchian himself.David opens up about what instantly grabbed him when he first read the script — the childhood fears we all carry, the feeling of not being believed, and the universal terror of facing something you can't name. He talks about Fuller's ability to blend fantasy, horror, action, and heart into a story that feels both intimate and wildly imaginative, calling the movie a rare four-quadrant genre experience. He also shares why Dust Bunny works as a surprising holiday release, celebrating its color, humor, emotional core, and the kind of big-screen escapism people crave at the end of the year. David reflects on the dreamlike quality of the film's world, the joy of watching audiences discover its layers, and the pure artistry Fuller brings to every frame. The conversation dives into childhood monsters, the value of sharing our fears, and the way movies help people feel less alone. David talks about working alongside legends like Sigourney Weaver and Mads Mikkelsen, praising Weaver's fearless choices and calling the cast a dream for anyone who loves genre storytelling. He also touches on the creative lessons he's learned from Bryan Fuller — especially the power of relentless vision, emotional honesty, and worldbuilding that transports viewers while still speaking to the heart.Dust Bunny hits screens December 12 and delivers a fantastical, darkly funny, and deeply human story perfect for the holiday season.

Bryan Fuller and Nicole Whitaker: Dust Bunny’s nightmare whimsy

The Cinematography Podcast Episode 338: Bryan Fuller and Nicole Hirsch Whitaker Bryan Fuller has one of the most recognizable visual signatures in modern television. Whether he's dealing with a forensic pathologist who bakes pies (Pushing Daisies) or a sophisticated cannibal (Hannibal), his work consistently balances the grotesque with the gorgeous. His style of hyper-stylized morbid surrealism was influenced by French maximalism in the 90's, such as Jean-Pierre Jeunet (Delicatessen, Amelie). “Between Delicatessen, City of Lost Children, and Amelie, there was this experience I had in the 90's and early aughts watching those films that gave me permission to push harder and go further in aesthetics that were on television,” Bryan explains. With his latest project, Dust Bunny, Bryan makes the leap from showrunning to feature directing, bringing his unique aesthetic to a dark fantasy-thriller. His decades of experience absorbing highly visual cinema have all led to this moment. “When I look at Dust Bunny, I'm like, that's a Barry Sonnenfeld shot. That's a John Carpenter shot. That's a Spielberg, because I've consumed all of these things and digested them and pooped out Dust Bunny.” Despite Bryan's self-deprecating description of the creative process, he was extremely meticulous about the filmmaking process. Cinematographer Nicole Hirsch Whitaker, ASC presented a comprehensive pitch deck that became the roadmap for the film's visual identity. “After the meeting, presenting her whole board with all of these images... she wanted the job and did a lot of work to show how she wanted the job,” says Bryan. Nicole, who shares Bryan's reverence for the same films, dove deep into the script to pull references ranging from The Professional and The Haunting (1963) to the raw, intimate photography of Nan Goldin. “I do think that it's important to make a good impression,” she says. “The deck is an impression of yourself as an artist that you leave behind.” During the interview, Nicole shares the pitch deck she made for Dust Bunny and discusses it in detail. Watch on YouTube or link to it here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1m0i5QVEarDFL248Vqvm3T-8a0watskba/view?usp=sharing The most radical visual choice in Dust Bunny is its aspect ratio. It's shot in an extreme 3:1 format (three squares wide), which is almost unheard of in modern cinema. This creates a triptych feel, where the frame is so wide it feels like a mural. It forces a sense of vertical claustrophobia, crushing the top and bottom of the frame. The camera emphasizes the floorboards and the space under the bed—precisely where the monster hides. This discovery occurred while Bryan and Nicole were testing lenses. Once the framing matte came off the lens, revealing the open gate width of the sensor, Bryan realized the wider view fundamentally changed the film's psychology. A subject centered in a 3:1 frame felt isolated in a way they hadn't before, sharpening the camera's emotional point of view. To further isolate the characters, Nicole tuned the ARRI Alpha anamorphic lenses to fall off at the edges, ensuring the audience's focus remains locked on the performance. While Dust Bunny was shot over 44 days in Budapest, the film's visual language was decades in the making. For Nicole, the challenge was translating a legendary showrunner's mental gallery into a physical reality. For Bryan, it was a homecoming to the cinematic influences that first gave him permission to be “too much.” See Dust Bunny in theaters. TV Mastermind Bryan Fuller (Hannibal, Pushing Daisies) makes his feature directorial debut with Dust Bunny starring Mads Mikkelsen, Sigourney Weaver, and newcomer Sophie Sloan. On the surface this film has nothing to do with Steven Spielberg, but it turns out that it was originally developed as an episode of the Amazing Stories reboot and Spielberg himself gave notes on the script that survived to this feature version. Fuller talks all about that creative collaboration as well as his relationship with Spielberg's work and even gives us some of his patented "queer readings" of some unlikely contenders from Spielberg's filmography that spoke to his own queer coming of age. Recorded live at the Toronto International Film Festival, David Peck sits down with filmmaker Bryan Fuller to discuss Dust Bunny, Fuller's darkly playful and deeply personal feature debut. He is best known as the creator of genre-defining television series including Hannibal, Pushing Daisies, Wonderfalls, and Dead Like Me, as well as his work on Star Trek: Discovery and American Gods. Actor, writer, and monster kid David Dastmalchian joins Talking Strange host Aaron Sagers to talk about his role as a badass hitman in Dust Bunny (opening in theaters Dec. 12), his own childhood nightmares, and chatting about mortality from inside a coffin. In Bryan Fuller's Dust Bunny, David plays a mysterious hitman sent to take out Mads Mikkelsen's character who is a high-value target in a fantastical criminal underworld. The job seems simple until he finds his mark seated with a 10-year-old girl, and suddenly the mission, the money, and his own buried history collide. David breaks down how Fuller pitched the role from the character's point of view and why a monster in the bed might stop this killer cold. Aaron and David dig into: David's childhood monsters: a small Frankenstein's creature stepping out of a closet door, and people who beg him for help before transforming into werewolves How those fears now live on in his comic Count Crowley: Reluctant Midnight Monster Hunter and other writing projects Bryan Fuller's heightened “world at 11” tone — grounded emotion with stylized color, comedy, and horror (think John Wick meets Amélie with a touch of Spielberg, Dante, and Sondheim) Dust Bunny as a holiday release and why David sees it as a perfect family-sharing, big-screen fairy tale for spooky-minded folks of all ages They also talk about Grave Conversations, David's YouTube show where he interviews guests while lying together in coffins, and how those end-of-life, afterlife, and legacy discussions reveal a more vulnerable side of people like Bryan Fuller. _______________________________________________________________ The Talking Strange Show with Aaron Sagers is a weekly paranormal pop culture show featuring celebrity and author interviews, as well as experts in all things strange and unexplained. Visionary creator Bryan Fuller (Hannibal, Pushing Daisies, American Gods) joins Talking Strange host Aaron Sagers to discuss his feature directorial debut, Dust Bunny. The movie is a dark, fantastical fairy tale about childhood fear, imagined monsters, and the very real ones hiding in plain sight. The film stars Mads Mikkelsen as a mysterious hitman who kills real-life monsters and Sophie Sloan as a fearless 10-year-old girl convinced something evil has devoured her family. Together, they battle assassins, confront grief, and blur the line between fantasy and reality in a story that reminds viewers of the hyper-realized worlds of John Wick and Amélie. In this wide-ranging conversation, Fuller breaks down the film's heightened storybook aesthetic, monster design inspired by a child's imagination, action sequences that feel almost balletic, and what it's like directing performers like Mads Mikkelsen, Sigourney Weaver, and David Dastlmalchian. He also opens up about his own belief in the supernatural, including a chilling, unexplained encounter he experienced while living in Los Angeles. It's a conversation about monsters, fairy tales, ghosts, and why believing children, and embracing imagination, may be the most powerful tool we have. Childhood fears, bedtime monsters, and the hazy membrane between imagination and trauma collide in “Dust Bunny,” the feature directorial debut of Bryan Fuller, a filmmaker whose storytelling instincts have always lived in the space between the two B's - beauty and brutality. It is a film that feels handcrafted out of nightmares and fairy-tale sugar, a creature feature through the eyes of a child who sees the world in magic and menace at the same time. Rich with color, shadows, and emotional ambiguity, it is unmistakably a Bryan Fuller movie, which is to say that it's tender, violent, mischievous, and sincere in equal measure.Joining The Discourse in today's episode is Bryan Fuller himself, the writer and director behind shows like “Hannibal,” “Pushing Daisies,” “American Gods,” and “Star Trek: Discovery” (in its early days). Fuller's signature blend of genre storytelling and emotional excavation finds a new form here as he steps behind the camera for his first feature-length film, crafting a story about a little girl who hires a hitman to kill the monster under her bed and discovers that nothing is simple when your fears have roots. The film stars Mads Mikkelsen, Sigourney Weaver, David Dastmalchian, Sophie Sloan, and Sheila Atim.

Course: Oblivion (Star Trek: Voyager, S5 E18) was recommended by Pascal Farful, He/Him, who said: I have been watching Voyager alongside TNG and DS9 in date-of-release order. Voyager has somewhat nested in as my third place of three. Last is a disservice, but my expectations for Voyager are... less. The writing clunks more often than it slices. As a viewer, I feel that VOY challenges me the least of the three."Course: Oblivion" is an episode about death. About integrity. About despair and about the meaning of self. It's an episode which does what I want most from art, takes a large, vulgar risk and commits to it. Unlike almost all the Voy episodes I've seen thus far, where the show feels like it's trying to serve me up The Star Trek I Ordered From The Menu, "Course: Oblivion" doesn't care what I want, and I get the distinct impression that it doesn't care if I like it. But I do like it. A lot.It is true that, for all plot related purposes, "Course: Oblivion" doesn't matter. The crew are synthetic copies of the real thing. They explode meaninglessly into nothing, oblivious to (nearly) everyone. But what "Course: Oblivion" does is ask the viewer "if you accomplish nothing, nobody remembers you and you're not even who you think you are, does it matter if you act honourably and with integrity? Do your sins leave scars if no flesh is left to bare them?"Jayneway could have destroyed the mining ship, to have a chance to save what was left of the crew. But it would have been murder, so she doesn't. Jayneway, she of Tuvix, decides that her integrity matters more than her life. Kim consoles Paris over the loss of Torres even though these three people are not those people. But duplicate Kim believes in the principles of the real Kim. So he honours those principles regardless of the reality of self. What is the difference between duplicate Kim and "real" Kim if both honour the same principles and integrities? Are you who you are or are you *what you do*?Yes, the ship explodes. No, nobody will remember them. Yes, if you want to look at it purely in terms of 'getting these people to earth', this is pointless. But the value of these people is not in their home, their destination, and in their intent, but in their dignity and their principles. And Course: Oblivion teaches us that the point of following your principles and having integrity is not to be remembered or to be "the true, definitive self", it's because, even in the bleakest and most hopeless of times, honouring your principles and your integrity matters and is honourable. Even if nobody is around to see it.Course: Oblivion first aired on March 3, 1999, written by story by Bryan Fuller and Nick Sagan, teleplay by Nick Sagan, and directed by Anson WilliamsAfter Torres and Paris get married, subspace radiation causes the crew and their ship to disintegrate. The Joy of Trek is hosted by Khaki & Kay, with editing & production by Chief Engineer Greg and music by Fox Amoore (Bandcamp | Bluesky)Send us your recommendations, or support us on Patreon.Find us at joyoftrek.com · Twitter · Facebook

Tread Perilously's Star Trek month concludes with an Enterprise episode called "Carbon Creek." When Captain Archer invites T'Pol and Trip to a dinner celebrating the Vulcan's first full year aboard Enterprise, she tells the secret story of the first Vulcan contact with humans. The tale concerns her great-grandmother, T'Mir, a small Pennsylvania town in the late 1950s, and the culture shock T'Mir and the members of her team experienced. But is it all a put-on as T'Pol keeps reminding Archer and Trip that she was asked to "tell a story" or does it contain the ring of truth? J. Paul Boehmer ends up the MVP of the month for two appearances. Ann Cusack also proves to be a welcome addition. Geography Corner determines what Southern California town is playing Carbon Creek. The lack of Cold War paranoia in the 1950s scenes is examined. Erik tries to find a way to blame Bryan Fuller for everything. Vulcan fashions get appraised. Jolene Blalock proves a surprise as T'Mir -- who ends up more interesting than T'Pol. Justin envisions her as a Vulcan Wine Mom. The pronunciation of guest character Mestral becomes a point of confusion. But will this prove to be one of the more successful Enterprise episodes?

Tread Perilously's Star Trek month continues with an episode of Voyager called "Drone." When a close call in the transporter merges Seven of Nine's nano implants with the Doctor's 29th Century holotransmitter, a future Borg gestates in the silence lab. Despite the similarities to the Tuvix incident, Captain Janeway allows it to live and assigns Seven to be its teacher. But when the drone, who self-identifies as One, starts asking difficult questions about the Borg, he defies Seven and reaches out directly. Will she be able to teach him why the Borg are wrong before they assimilate his advanced technologies? Erik and Justin face a standard issue episode of Voyager that might actually be good. They debate the merits of the story, nonetheless, with Erik pointing out four or five Next Generation episodes it emulates. Jeri Ryan continues to be the show's MVP, with Robert Picardo and Tim Russ close behind her. Janeway's choice to allow One to live is examined in light of the reappraisal of "Tuvix." The presence of Bryan Fuller in the writing credits leads to a surprising twist. Harry Kim's future as an eternal ensign becomes text. The pair try to determine which cast members are still engaged in Season 5 and a minor character leads to a larger critique of Voyager as a whole.

For this first episode of June, Robyn Zabukovec (@TheFinalGirly) strides on back to her guest chair for a breakdown of Hannibal, the horror-thriller show that premiered on NBC in 2013 and spent three seasons diving into the grisly and psychological layers of the bond that grows between an FBI criminal profiler with a painfully perceptive knack for empathy and a cunning forensic psychiatrist who harbors murderous and cannibalistic secrets. Comparing this show to the underrated horror movie Sound of Violence (which Arthur and Robyn previously covered last Pride Month on 2CC), the fake TV series Clarice, and Robyn's hatred of the movies Hannibal (2001) and Red Dragon stand out as a few of the subjects on this episode.Developed by Bryan Fuller, Hannibal stars Mads Mikkelsen, Hugh Dancy, Laurence Fishburne, Caroline Dhavernas, Hettienne Park, Scott Thompson, Aaron Abrams, Gillian Anderson, Raúl Esparza, Kacey Rohl, Lara Jean Chorostecki, Suzy Eddie Izzard, Gina Torres, Anna Chlumsky, Katharine Isabelle, Michael Pitt, Joe Anderson, Vladimir Jon Cubrt, Cynthia Nixon, Richard Armitage, Rutina Wesley, Tao Okamoto, Glenn Fleshler, and Fortunato Cerlino.Spoilers start at 40:45Note: Sorry for not posting an episode last week! In 2024 both Ronnie Simpson and Bryan Fuller had an ocean adventure. Ronnie was solo sailing in a race around the world. Bryan doing one of the only Atlantic crossings from Boston to London in a rowboat. Neither event is simple or easy. Both men are experts. Each mission failed...and both boats were abandoned during their attempts. Bryan and Ronnie don't know one another, yet, they have much in commo. Ronnie returns for his second visit to the Break It Down Show with Pete A Turner. With Bryan Fuller the founder of Boarder Rowers and Power Rowing of Brookline Mass. Ronnie Simpson is a 39-year-old professional racing sailor from the United States of America who aims to sail in the 2028 Vendee Globe. Recently, Ronnie was the skipper of the Open 50 Shipyard Brewing which competed in the first-ever Global Solo Challenge in 2023-24. Sailing in a strong third place for most of the race, Ronnie unfortunately dismasted off of Argentina in February 2024 and Shipyard Brewing was lost at sea. Having completed 80% of a singlehanded racing circumnavigation and rounding all of the three great capes including Cape Horn, Ronnie's resolve to race the Vendee Globe is now only stronger.
