This week, we discuss two films involving Brady Corbet, the director of The Brutalist. The first is Vox Lux (2018), a musical drama written and directed by Brady Corbet, from a story by Corbet and Mona Fastvold. It follows a pop star who rises to fame after a traumatic event, exploring the intersection of celebrity and personal history. The second is Mysterious Skin (2004), a coming-of-age drama written, produced and directed by Gregg Araki, adapted from Scott Heim's 1995 novel of the same name. The film follows two young men on separate but interconnected journeys of self-discovery as they confront their pasts. Hosted by Andrew Quinn, Darren Mooney and Jess Dunne, this week with special guest Billie Jean Doheny, The 250 is a (mostly) weekly trip through some of the best (and worst) movies ever made, as voted for by Internet Movie Database Users. New episodes are released every second Saturday at 6pm GMT, with the occasional bonus episode between them. This week, the Brothers Strause's Alien vs. Predator: Requiem. The peaceful community of Gunnison in Colorado finds its idyllic existence interrupted when a strange extraterrestrial vessel comes crashing to Earth in the woods at the edge of town. The unusual ship is carrying a dangerous cargo, but it also brings other outsid visitors to town. It turns out that there's more than one sort of alien that the residents have to worry about. At time of recording, it was not ranked on the list of the best or worst movies of all time on the Internet Movie Database.

After taking a detour into Beetlejuice land, The Three Men And A Retrospective Podcast returns to the Alien franchise discussing a film that, well, needs to be discussed. Director Ridley Scott had always wanted to return to the franchise that put him on the map. But after Fox decided to move forward with the Alien vs Predator films, it would seem he was permanently soured on it. Five years after Aliens vs Predator Requiem, Scott's desire was reinvigorated. Bringing together a cast that included Charlize Theron, Noomi Rapace, and Michael Fassbender, among others, Scott put Prometheus out in the summer of 2012. At least one member of this podcast was really looking forward to it, and while the film ended up making a lot of money, it seemed to be lost amongst a ton of mixed reviews and discussions of what Scott actually wanted to make. Join Garrett, Matt, and Adam as they add to that discussion recording a review Garrett has wanted to do since they started this podcast. And be sure to return next week, as Adam returns to territory he swore he would never return to. That of Alien Covenant. Also, keep a lookout for a special Halloween review that returns to territory the boys have covered before. What is it? Stay tuned

Love it or hate it, Alien Resurrection won't be ignored. The final film in the Ripley saga of the Alien franchise (before it branched off into Predators, prequels, and other distractions…more on that below), Alien Resurrection has always been something of a hot-button issue with fans. Maybe not as much as Prometheus, but still! Any movie that deals with cloning a beloved character (who had been granted a heroic death in the previous film), complete with “genetic memories” is bound to push some buttons, but that's not even the biggest thing this movie adds to the franchise. Alien Resurrection heralds the arrival on the scene of a new kind of Xenomorph. Specifically, a human/alien hybrid made via the same shady experiments that helped “bring back” Ripley. As a result, we get a Xenomorph that (among other things) no longer lays eggs and instead can reproduce in a slightly more recognizable/mammalian fashion. And hoo-boy, do Hakeem and Tamara have questions about this one! From the handling of cloning to the hybrid alien itself, this episode of Does it Fly? is for you if the gooier corners of the Alien universe are your cup of acid blood.Check it out here or on our YouTube page!SUGGESTED VIEWING Before we get into the intricacies of the Alien franchise, allow us to also recommend one of Tamara's favorite movies, Code 46, an underrated 2003 film from director Michael Winterbottom which deals with a few similar themes of ethics within biotechnology as they regard our discussion about Alien Resurrection. Obviously, concepts from Alien Resurrection are what we focus on in this episode, but if you haven't seen the movies that precede it, too, then you might be a little lost. Those are…Alien (1979)Aliens (1986)Alien 3 (1992)Alien Resurrection (1997)Now, the franchise continues on after that, albeit to mixed (and sometimes controversial) results. Those are…Alien vs. Predator (2004)Alien vs. Predator: Requiem (2007) Both of the above movies are inessential, and take place BEFORE the events of the first film, or even the other prequels. Speaking of which, for the last decade or so, the Alien franchise has been more concerned with exploring the days before the first film, which brings us to…Prometheus (2012)Alien: Covenant (2017)And now, currently in theaters is Alien: Romulus, which takes place between Alien and Aliens. Get watchin'!FURTHER READING Do you want to delve a little deeper into the facts, concepts, and stories Hakeem and Tamara referenced in today's episode? Of course you do! CloningCentral to our discussion about the Xenomorph/human hybrid in Alien Resurrection is the question of cloning. Granted, this is a tough one to read up on, but this fact sheet from the National Human Genome Research institute is a good start. Also, doesn't the fact that there's a National Human Genome Research Institute in the first place make it sound like we're already living in a sci-fi movie?Genetic MemoryHakeem (and science in general) state that when you clone an organism, you're making a twin of it, you aren't creating an exact duplicate that also contains memories and learned experiences. That, of course, blows a pretty big hole in Alien Resurrection right out of the gate. That being said, there's some interesting reading to be done on the subject both here and here, although neither really support the movie's central premise.Hybridization“I find it really interesting that when this baby comes out and Ripley is created, both are hybrids of alien and human. So the question is, can you splice together genes like that.” For this one, we couldn't resist going back to the National Human Genome Research Institute for some hard information. See also: Retroviruses.Tuskegee Experiment 26:50One of the darker chapters of American 20th Century history involved the deliberate infection of African-Americans with syphilis in order to study the disease over a period of time. It's monstrous that something like this was sanctioned by official government agencies, and we shouldn't forget that this is part of our recent past so that it never happens again.WANT MORE FROM DOES IT FLY?Just a reminder, if you haven't watched our exploration of Xenomorph biology as it was explored in the first Alien movie (which also happens to be one of our most popular episodes), now's a good time to get to it!Check out our episode on the most infamous moment in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, which just celebrated its 40th anniversary. You asked for it. You demanded it. We… sadly listened to you. That's right - by overwhelming demand, we're covering a true clash of the Titans: terrible lighting and non-existent characters! Wait. That's here too, but the movie we're talking about is ALIENS VS. PREDATOR: REQUIEM!! This movie has it all: Predator wedding rehearsals, Doctor Face-Hands, a real-life murderer, communal hootch in a sewer, xenomorph stage direction, people who state that their profession is acting, and a girl!! What girl? Who can say? You get all this, plus we dip into Predator bureaucracy, remember our favorite screams, force in more Prometheus discussion then you would think, and dip ourselves into a very acid-heavy edition of Choose Your Own Deathventure!! Welcome to the first episode of It's That Bad, where Connor and Gabe look at the irredeemable franchise-crossover cashgrab Alien vs. Predator: Requiem. While fans were unimpressed with Paul W.S. Anderson's first AvP flick, they were even more disgusted with this follow-up that turns two of cinema's most iconic intergalactic Titans of Terror into generic and barely visible creepy crawlers. So join Gabe and Connor as they talk the Alien and Predator franchises, the state of lighting in Hollywood productions, and what makes AvP Requiem so offensive.
The fight isn't through yet. After trudging through the ice and mediocrity of 2004's Alien vs. Predator, the Halloweenies are now stumbling around the darkness within 2007's Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem. Max is back to chat with Rob and Joe about some of the less universally loved instalments in the ever popular Alien franchise! We'll dive deep into Alien 3 (1992), directed by David Fincher, Alien Resurrection (1997), directed by Jean-Pierre Jeunet and, with much trepidation, Aliens vs Predator: Requiem (2007), directed by the Brothers Strause. You must have been on another planet if you haven't seen at least one or two of these films, nevertheless we will be announcing a Spoiler Territory section for each. For Alien 3 you can then skip ahead to the 1:11:03 mark, for Alien Resurrection, potential spoilers end at 1:52:12 and if you're really worried about spoiling AVP: Requiem's astounding conclusion (...), you can skip ahead to 2:15:04. Theme music: "The Cold Light of Day" by HKM. Check out HKM on #SoundCloud or Bandcamp
We're back to continue our journey throughout the series that inspired Metroid, and this time around, we're even more firmly in spinoff territory than we were back in AVP! The sequel to the crossover, Alien vs Predator: Requiem promises more gore, more kills, and more craziness, but at the end of the day, it is a good movie? A hybrid of the two titular races called the Predalien is certainly wrecking havoc, but is it enough to overcome a lot of the technical issues and character problems this movie has? Come hear Andy and Gooey's thoughts on the movie, what works, what doesn't, and why there were no further AVP movies after this one (yet!), despite a fantastic cliffhanger scene! The Alien franchise is about to undergo a makeover, so come and review the last movie of the current Alien era! Alien In Review will return, but in the meantime, if you like Andy and Goo talking movies, check out their other podcast Virtual Theater, a podcast about video game movies and the stories that shape them! [School of Movies 2024] After decades of very patchy sequels and spinoffs to the 1987 sci-fi classic, Predator, we finally get one that is not only worthy of, but in many ways surpasses its stealthy action-beefcake-slasher source. So far we've had Predator 2 (1990), Alien vs. Predator (2004), Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem (2007), Predators (2010) and The Predator (2018). But this one takes note of there frequently being a woman of colour on the cast of the previous movies and this time put her front and centre, telling her story, rather than the grizzled guys she's babysitting. Relative unknown Amber Midthunder (who has nonetheless been acting since 2001 at the age of 4) stars as Naru, a Comanche girl on the great plains of America, circa 1719. Her skills lie in being highly observant and resourceful, and her frustrations stem from the guys in her group not letting her be a hunter. This of course goes upside down when an outsider touches down in their territory and starts bagging trophies with horrifying ease. And these French fur-trappers are similarly surprised to find an alien Predator carving them up for his own shelf-candy. From Dan Trachtenberg, the director of 10 Cloverfield Lane comes another absolutely riveting tale of a woman who must fight to survive. Guest: Actual Comanche Nama Chibitty @namathenerd
Ben and Pogues watch AVP: Requiem. They talk no lighting, too many characters, and question why alien predators get dreads.

Often times a sequel finds ways to miss the entire point of giving us more of the franchise. AvP Requiem is the opposite of that. This movie 100% understands the assignment and just gives us so much more of Aliens and Predators going at it. There are PLENTY of throwaway characters to be fodder for the two alien lifeforms, fixing a major problem from the first movie instantly. For context, we watched the Unrated version of this film, and it will absolutely color your opinion negatively if you watch the theatrical cut instead of the unrated cut. Now, does this mean the movie is essential? It's a fantastic question with a surprising answer. ************************************************** TIMECODES 0:00 - Intro 1:05 - Spoiler Warning 1:54 - Synopsis 3:18 - Discussion 33:20 - Final Review 41:24 - Is it essential? 48:24 - Socials, Suggestions, Sign Off ************************************************** Rate and subscribe! Original Airdate 2/4/14Sean Comer and Mark Radulich welcome author Jason Offutt back for the final installment of our 3 week Alien/Predator series, Alien vs Predator!Alien vs. Predator (stylized as AVP: Alien vs. Predator) is a 2004 science fiction action film written and directed by Paul W. S. Anderson, and starring Sanaa Lathan, Raoul Bova, Lance Henriksen and Ewen Bremner. It is the first film installment of the Alien vs. Predator franchise, adapting a crossover bringing together the eponymous creatures of the Alien and Predator series, a concept which originated in a 1989 comic book. Anderson wrote the story together with the creators of the Alien franchise, Dan O'Bannon and Ronald Shusett, and Anderson and Shane Salerno adapted the story into a screenplay. Their writing was influenced by Aztec mythology, the comic book series, and the writings of Erich von Däniken. In the film, scientists are caught in the crossfire of an ancient battle between Aliens and Predators as they attempt to escape a bygone pyramid.Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem (stylized as AVPR: Aliens vs Predator - Requiem) is a 2007 American science fiction action film directed by the Brothers Strause (Colin and Greg Strause) in their directorial debut and written by Shane Salerno. The film stars Steven Pasquale, Reiko Aylesworth, John Ortiz, Johnny Lewis and Ariel Gade.It is a sequel to Alien vs. Predator (2004), and the second and latest installment in the Alien vs. Predator franchise, continuing the crossover between the Alien and Predator franchises. Set immediately after the events of the previous film, the film begins with a Predator ship crashing into a forest outside of Gunnison, Colorado, where an Alien-Predator hybrid known as the Predalien escapes and makes its way to the nearby small town. A skilled veteran Predator is dispatched to kill the Predalien, and the townspeople try to escape the ensuing carnage.Title card art by Benjamin J Colon @EpicBenjaminJ on all the things: Twitter, Instagram, Twitch, and Youtube

Hey Listener, this show was to big to be just one episode so here is part II which focuses on AVP: Alien vs. Predator (2004), Aliens vs. Predator - Requiem (2007), Predators (2010), The Predator (2018), and Prey (2022). Paul WS Anderson sucks. Everyone should watch the early 90's classic Stone Cold and watch a komodo dragon eat a candy infused protein shake. Double barrel chin. Cody goes on a tangent about his love for AVP. Pawl wants that human blood and your host pitches his theory on why kids could watch R rated in the 80s, but not the 90s movies. Let Genndy Tartakovsky create an AVP animated film. Are we going to see Predator/human sex? Do you want Pawl to like your movie; then kill a kid. Dropping a nuke in the continental 48. Robert Rodriguez and a killer cast makes Predators an incredible movie. The Devil's Rejects side rant. How does this lady know about the first Predator movie and stumbling upon Laurence Fishburne. Attempting to toothbrush shank a Predator. Seeing a movie in theaters vs. seeing it at home. Cody leaves to get an energy drink, pee, and then come back in to crap all over John Wick. The Predator: Shane Black hires a registered sex offender, doesn't understand how Autism works, and makes fun of Tourettes all in one film. “That's my new suit, Bubba. I hope they have it in a 42 Long” and a talking Predator. GROAN! A Monster energy drink fueled Stanley Kubrick side rant. Is the Predator to OP in 1700's? Ranking the worst of the White guys. Cody Hucker: Third Wave Feminist. What Predator movie concept would you like to see next?
In our last Caravan Of Garbage until September we take a look at nobodies favorite Alien or Predator movie, or even Alien VS Predator movie, AVP Requiem. It's certainly not without it's moments (when you can see them) and brings into live action the idea of an Xenomorph/Yautja in the Predalien.
