In the penultimate episode of the season, we're diving headfirst into the dark fantasy movie that defined 80s childhoods (for some of us, Dan included, maybe?) but was a complete box-office flop: Labyrinth (1986). Settle in for spoilers, swearing, and probably a tangent or two about where babies go when Jareth steals them. Was it just a logistical nightmare with all those puppets, animals, and babies? Yes. Does Jareth's portrayal raise some eyebrows today? Absolutely, he's the villain, you muppet! But despite its initial failure as a movie that flopped at the box-office, Labyrinth's unique blend of whimsy, darkness, and catchy songs (dance, magic, dance!) has cemented its status as a cult classic. We talk about the worm, the door knockers, the Bog of Eternal Stench, and why Jim Henson took the flop so hard. What to expect from this episode: Speculation on the film's deeper themes and interpretations, from it being a coming-of-age story about Sarah letting go of childhood things, an anti-hoarding message via the Garbage Lady, a metaphor for life's journey and friendship, or even the darker fan theory that the entire event is a result of Sarah's mental illness A deep dive into the incredible puppet work and practical effects, highlighting characters like Hoggle and the technical challenges of the "Swiss cheese" set Discussion about the confirmed sequel in development, touching on previous directors attached (Scott Derrickson, Fede Alvarez) and the current attachment of Robert Eggers (EGGERS!) On this week's episode, the guys kick off the discussion by delving into the intricate process behind the making of the highly anticipated Alien Earth teaser, which impressively utilizes minimal CGI to create its stunning visuals. They explore the creative decisions that went into this approach, highlighting the challenges and advantages of relying on practical effects and traditional filmmaking techniques. This fascinating conversation sparks an idea in Cody's mind, leading him to propose a unique concept to Fede Alvarez for a potential sequel or spinoff related to Alien Romulus. Cody's vision involves incorporating iconic toys from the original Alien franchise, suggesting a nostalgic yet innovative angle that could resonate with long-time fans while attracting a new audience. As the dialogue progresses, Cody transitions to share an intriguing story about a Pirate Dark Ride featured in a video he recently watched, specifically focusing on the attraction known as Pirates of Speelunker Cave. He vividly describes the ride's whimsical elements and its blend of adventure and fantasy, captivating Joe's attention as they discuss the allure of themed attractions and the nostalgia they evoke. In response, Joe introduces Cody to the fascinating tale of Legend City, a defunct theme park located right here in Arizona. He recounts the park's rise and fall, detailing its unique attractions and the memories it created for visitors during its brief existence. The conversation evolves into a broader discussion about the significance of theme parks in popular culture and the way they shape our experiences and childhood memories. To wind down this week's episode, Cody takes a sentimental turn, driving Joe down memory lane as they reminisce about The Crow franchise making its way to streaming platforms. They reflect on the impact of the original film, its cult status, and the darker themes it explored, as well as the legacy it has left behind in both cinema and popular culture. Their nostalgic banter highlights the enduring appeal of The Crow and its characters, sparking a deeper conversation about the evolution of film adaptations and the importance of preserving classic stories for new generations to discover. This episode is packed with rich discussions that not only entertain but also invite listeners to engage with the broader themes of creativity, nostalgia, and the ever-evolving landscape of entertainment.Official Website: https://www.comesnaturallypodcast.comOfficial Merchandise: https://shop.spreadshirt.com/comes-naturally-podcast/iTunes: http://tinyurl.com/kqkgackFacebook: http://tinyurl.com/myovgm8Tumblr: http://tinyurl.com/m7a6mg9Twitter: @ComesNaturalPodYouTube: http://tiny.cc/5snxpy

Director Ridley Scott discusses his new film, Gladiator II, with fellow Director Fede Alvarez in a Q&A at the DGA theater in Los Angeles. In the conversation, he discusses how he decided on casting Actor Paul Mescal in the lead role, how he distances himself from the post process so he and his team have space to do their best work, and which of his legacy films he would preserve if he could only choose one. The sequel to Scott's 2000 film Gladiator takes place years after the events of the first film and follows Lucius—who as a child witnessed the revered hero Maximus die at the hands of his uncle. As his home is conquered and he is forced to fight as a gladiator in the Colosseum, Lucius attempts to reclaim everything he has lost. The time has come. The three of us are all big fans of the Alien franchise and director/writer Fede Alvarez has arrived with buddy and co-writer Rodo Sayagues to give their take. As the first film in the long running Alien series to be produced by 20th Century Studios following it's acquisition by Disney, Alien: Romulus successfully resuscitated the franchise, grossing over $350 million worldwide. But at what cost? Will the film's gorgeous production design, modern horror tropes, and nostalgic nods to the greatest hits of the franchise be enough? Or is what some identify as an over-reliance on fan service, imitation, incoherent plotting, and contrivances, ultimately a deal breaker? What did we think? You're about to find out. "Z-01 contains the genome responsible for the Xeno's ability to accelerate and slow down its metabolism at will. Its symbiotic capableness easily rewrites the host's DNA through its blood. In space no one can hear you scream, but can they hear you podcast? This week Mike and Stephen are joined by guest Katy Terry (Fangs for the Memories podcast) to talk about Fede Alvarez entry into the Alien canon, Alien Romulus. WE discuss where the film goes right, with its adherence to practical effects and sets, fantastic set pieces that make the Xenomorph scary again, and a cracker jack cast that has a new riff on the working class and bodily autonomy themes the original did so well. When Romulus does its own thing, it shines. We also cover the warts. From an overreliance on fan service to the ghoulish and head scratching decision to include a CGI Ian Holm, we wonder why the Alvarez felt such a need to cling to the past rather than forge a new path forward for the franchise.
We explore the wild universe of the Alien franchise as we confront its latest installment Alien: Romulus (2024) directed by Fede Alvarez. We briefly talk about Alien (1979), Aliens (1986), Alien 3 (1992), Alien Resurrection (1997), AVP (2004), AVP:R (2007), Prometheus (2012), and Alien: Covenant (2017) before we ascend the sacred Burbank 16 steps to watch this movie in IMAX. We were pleasantly surprised at this interquel, which takes place between Alien (1979) and Aliens (1986). It stars a younger group of actors this time including Cailee Spaeny, David Jonsson, Archie Renaux, Isabela Merced, Spike Fearn, and Aileen Wu. Facehuggers and chestbursters abound! But let Ian Holm rest in peace!
"In space, no one can hear you scream." For Alien: Romulus the 7th installment of the Alien Movie Franchise (or 9th...you be the judge), director Fede Alvarez follows a confident group of friends, determined to improve the world they've been given by the mistakes of their elders. Though their efforts are valiant, they stand no match against what's waiting for them aboard the abandoned ship: Romulus. Join us for another special edition of a SPOILER FULL Alien: Romulus review. It's finally here. After months of start stops, with interruptions of Beetlejuice and some vampires re-invading Salem's Lot, we have finally come to the review the Alien retrospective was designed to end with. Welcome, to the Three Men and a Retrospective's review of director Fede Alvarez's Alien Romulus. Listen in as the boys discuss their theatrical experiences, and then dive right in to a film that was seven years in the making. Despite major highlights for all, the three weren't really looking forward to this new rendition of the ‘perfect organism'. So Alvarez had an uphill battle. But positive reviews were coming in, which made one look forward to the movie more than he initially thought. So download and listen to Garrett, Adam, and Matt dive into their conclusion to Alien. And then reveal what they're reviewing next. And, well, let's just say we have a ton of corn to go through.

Andrew and Scotty go to a cabin in the woods to kick their coffee addictions and read from a cute little book they find in the basement as they discuss 2013's "Evil Dead". They also talk about a couple of fun Beyond fest screenings, a fly invasion, and they read a new review. And at the end of the end of the episode, they announce their next movie!"Evil Dead" was directed by Fede Alvarez. In this remake that some consider a sequel, a group of friends and family accompany Mia to an isolated cabin in the woods, where they plan to help her kick her heroin addiction. Things get weird when they find a basement full of dead cats, along with a book wrapped in black plastic and barbed wire. Everything will probably be fine, though.Feel free to send us a message! Director Fede Alvarez discusses his new film, Alien: Romulus, with fellow Director Leigh Whannell in a Q&A at the DGA theater in Los Angeles. In the conversation, he discusses his process for crafting scenes, creating a believable relationship between a human and android character, and working with the effects team from previous films. This continuation of the Alien franchise tells the story of a group of young space colonizers with a plan to scavenge a derelict space station. Instead, once they arrive, they discover they might not be alone. See photos and a summary of this event below: https://dga.org/Events/2024/Oct2024/AlienRomulus_QnA_0824
