A Hamster With a Blunt Penknife - a Doctor Who Commentary podcast
In his podcast debut, John talks about an ambitious, action packed and nostalgic book by esteemed SF author Alistair Reynolds. We're shocked at how much it feels like the Pertwee era, and how much it innovates.
I'm back!! I share some of the stressors I've had and much of the stories I've been reading these past few weeks. These stories include (roughly in order of discussion): Consider Phlebas by Ian M. Banks, The Long Earth series by Terry Pratchett and Stephen Baxter, House of Suns by Alistair Reynolds, and the webfiction Ar'Kendrithyst by Arcs. And I forgot to talk about A Half-Built Garden by Ruthanna Emrys... which is a shame because it was my favorite novel of the lot! Definitely have to get into it in the next episode.
We wrap up our last thoughts on Aurora Rising by Alistair Reynolds and kick off the new read, The Inheritance of Orquídea Divina by Zoraida Córdova.
We have pumpkin spiked lattes and cheese. In fact one cheesy book literally molds. Plus we check in with a non-spoilery discussion of Aurora Rising/The Prefect by Alistair Reynolds.
“Lagavulin 16 & coca-cola works incredibly well together because the flavours in both are very similar. Chocolatey, coffee, cherry notes are present in both. As sacrilegious as it may seem, it’s there to be enjoyed however you want" Alistair Reynolds the Johnnie Walker Scotch Whisky Ambassador joins us On The Back Bar to talk to us about his new podcast, The Middle Cut. Co-hosting alongside Diageo Malt Whisky Ambassador Colin Dunn, the pair take a journey across Scotland stopping at a SIngle Malt distillery every episode to discuss. Alistair has enjoyed a long career in the world of bartending and alcohol. In 2015 he was crowned World Class bartender of the year, and he has been active in competitions and the community alike. This episode is sponsored by IA Path - Unlocking Your Adjusting Superpowers. Go to https://iapath.com Luke Magnan was introduced to me by a close friend who told me that Luke was the most thoughtful insurance technologist my friend had ever worked with. In this episode of Profiles in Risk, Luke and I discuss his startup Combined Ratio Solutions, the advantages & disadvantages of bootstrapping vs raising venture funds, the state of the insurtech market, how insurers allow legacy systems to get out of control (and how insurers who have prevented that from happening, did it) and using off-shore resources from Russia. Luke brings a wealth of wisdom to insurance and technology and shares it with us in this episode. Ramez Naam is a computer scientist who lives in the pacific northwest. His debut novel, Nexus (Angry Robot, 2012), has received an impressive level of positive buzz, including an endorsement from one of our past interview subjects, Alistair Reynolds. Although this is his first work of fiction, Naam is no stranger to writing. His previous book, More than Human: Embracing the Promise of Biological Enhancement, received the 2005 HG Wells Award for Contributions to Transhumanism. As he discusses in the podcast, he has two books due out in 2013, including Crux, a sequel to Nexus, as well as a non-fiction work about technological adaptation and climate change, entitled The Infinite Resource: The Power of Ideas on a Finite Planet. I hope you enjoy the interview, which ranges across all of these subjects. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
