Let us know if you have any comments or suggestions scalemodelpodcast@gmail.com.Hi Guys,Listening to Episode 153, I want to commend for your Literature reading, the novels by Philip Kerr. He wrote a series of 13 books in which the protagonist is a German policeman: they begin during the Weimar Republic years, span the Nazi period, and continue into the post-WW II era. The writing style leans heavily towards Raymond Chandler. They are NOT for the squeamish, however, as the historical accuracy is pretty spot-on. I recommend starting with Kerr's final volume, "Metropolis", which is set historically before the rest of the books in the series. As a testament to how much I like these books, I've read the entire series TWICE!Lastly, Stuart commented, in regard to a new Eduard Bf-109 E kit, that Adolf Galland had the most aerial victories in WW II. I am not interested in which kit you want made that either doesn't exist yet or is in need of a new tooling. Instead, I want to know your opinions on scale.I am tasking you each individually with two assignments in this discussion. Time and money are not considerations here (the most fictional part of all).You MUST eliminate a standard/popular modeling scale from a genre of your choosing and justify your choice (for the snarky-minded amongst you, “box scale” does not count). Or “They shouldn't have picked that scale.”You SHALL replace the eliminated scale by adding a new scale for any modeling genre of your choice that you believe is not represented well in the industry — or even at all — and you must tell me why I should invest in your idea. I'm back!! I share some of the stressors I've had and much of the stories I've been reading these past few weeks. These stories include (roughly in order of discussion): Consider Phlebas by Ian M. Banks, The Long Earth series by Terry Pratchett and Stephen Baxter, House of Suns by Alistair Reynolds, and the webfiction Ar'Kendrithyst by Arcs.And I forgot to talk about A Half-Built Garden by Ruthanna Emrys... which is a shame because it was my favorite novel of the lot! Definitely have to get into it in the next episode.

Hint: the core things happened in the period after the collapse of Roman rule in Britain as it slid into the dark ages, but no magic or mysticism- just events that were elaborated on over time until the myth we know today solidified. My son in law recommended it ages ago and I am pretty sure I read it before, but it's very good and hard to put down Terry: Finished Voyage by Steven Baxter, a very nice conjectural fiction about NASA going to Mars, and all the work and drama therein. I started his next book, Titan. We prepare to find out why infinite Earths aren't enough as writer, editor and podcaster Joel Martin returns to the podcast to fire up the fusion engine and have a close encounter of the crustacean kind in the third Terry Pratchett and Stephen Baxter Long Earth novel, The Long Mars. It's 2045 - five years after the eruption of the Yellowstone super-volcano on Datum Earth. The climate has catastrophically changed and there's been mass migration to stepwise Earths. Maggie Kauffman, captain of the new stepping airship Neil Armstrong II, is sent ten times further into the Long Earth than anyone has gone before, to find out what happened to the ship's missing predecessor. Meanwhile reclusive stepping pioneer Joshua Valienté is called back to the Datum by the A.I. Lobsang to search for a new kind of human emerging from the Long Earth. And Willis Linsay, who disappeared after giving Stepper box technology to the whole world thirty years ago, sends a message to his super-stepper daughter, Sally. He wants her to go on a mysterious mission to Mars... The last of Pratchett's novels to be published before his death, The Long Mars marks a turning point in the series where Pratchett's involvement was limited after the first draft, and Stephen Baxter did most of the polishing. Like The Long War it skips over the immediate aftermath of the disaster at the end of the previous book to inhabit the world of its longer term consequences. It also continues the tradition of switching between multiple narratives with at least a dozen key characters. There are old friends and new faces, but some of them are barely glimpsed. It's a book full of big ideas, but not so much plot - and even less emotional and character development. Does this one feel more Baxter than Pratchett? Is this the troubled middle episode of the series? What did you think of the portrayal of the Next? How cool are those acid snakes? Will any of these awesome ideas return in the final two books? Kara Meyberg Guzman is CEO and co-founder of Santa Cruz Local in California. Before the Local, she was managing editor of the Santa Cruz Sentinel. She left her job at the Sentinel, which is owned by Alden Global Capital's Media News Group, in 2018, citing differences with the company's management. Kara connected with another former Sentinel reporter, Stephen Baxter, and the two of them hatched a plan for the Local. They focus on public policy issues that affect the whole county, like housing, development and public health. The Local is a private company, owned by the co-founders. Writer and editor Deanne Sheldon-Collins joins Liz and Ben as they return to the infinite worlds of the Long Earth to discuss Pratchett's second collaboration with Stephen Baxter: 2013's The Long War. It's now ten years since anti-stepping extremists nuked natural stepper and explorer Joshua Valienté's home town of Madison on the original "Datum" Earth. Joshua has since settled down with pioneer Helen Green and become mayor of Hell-Knows-Where, a thriving town established more than a million steps West of the Datum. But Sally Linsay, fellow far stepper, soon arrives to ask Joshua for help. Trouble is brewing in the Long Earth: humanity's relationship with the species they call "trolls" is deteriorating. Tensions are rising between the American government and the far-flung colonies in its "footprint" on other worlds. And on another world barely visited by humans, other species make plans to push the humans back where they came from... The multi-threaded cosy travelogue continues in (probably) Pratchett's second-longest novel. More Earths, more characters, and more non-humans! A sense of potential disaster looms in every other chapter, while the characters and narrative ponder humanity's relationship with Earth, and the ways in which society might respond to twenty-five years of unlimited resources and living room. In addition to the 41 Discworld titles, he wrote 16 non-Discworld novels, a four-book series called The Science of Discworld (with Ian Stewart and Jack Cohen) and co-wrote the five-book The Long Earth series with Stephen Baxter. All this in addition to numerous graphic novels, short stories, theater adaptations… and much more. Prodigious doesn't cover it. His writing was clear, engaging, entertaining, thought-provoking—and don't forget extremely funny! So make it prodigious genius. We've waited two and a half years for its 35th anniversary, but finally Joel Martin rejoins Liz and Ben to resolve the Discworld's first (and most literal) cliffhanger in The Light Fantastic, the second Discworld novel, first published on the 2nd of June, 1986. When we last saw them, failed wizard Rincewind, Twoflower the tourist and Twoflower's magical Luggage - a living chest on legs - had fallen over the Rim of the Discworld. But instead of tumbling forever through space, they mysteriously find themselves in the Forest of Skund, surrounded by talking trees, gnomes and gingerbread cottages. The senior wizards of Unseen University - including Chancellor Galder Weatherwax, and the second of his Order, Ymper Trymon - soon discover what's happened: the Octavo, the Creator's book of spells, wants to keep Rincewind alive. One of its spells is inside his head, and all eight need to be read to avert an impending apocalypse heralded by an ominous red star... While the usual story is that Pratchett only returned to the Discworld because The Colour of Magic proved popular, he did set himself up for a sequel by dropping his protagonists off the edge of the world. Unlike its predecessor, The Light Fantastic has a pretty straightforward plot about averting the end of the world - but that doesn't stop Pratchett from parodying everything from fairytales to druidic sacrifices and the conventions of fantasy writing. Plus this book introduces some concepts, and especially characters, who will come back later, including a certain no-longer-human Librarian, Death's adopted daughter Ysabell, and octogenarian barbarian Genghiz Cohen. (The rest of the supporting cast are less fortunate...) Does this feel like a "real" Discworld book yet? How do we reconcile these versions of Death and Ysabell with the ones we come to love later? Is it really a bad idea to start with the early books - or is it fun to begin with the early versions of ideas Pratchett would later develop more fully? Matthew Sweet talks to Stephen Baxter about his sequel to HG Wells's novel War Of The Worlds, which was first serialised in 1897 and imagined an England invaded by Martians. Stephen Baxter's novel, which has been authorised by the HG Wells estate, is called The Massacre of Mankind and it sets the action 14 years after a Martian invasion. Eimear McBride's novels are noted for their 'experimental' approach. She joins Matthew with the academic and writer Mark Blacklock to discuss what 'experimental' can mean when applied to the novel. As the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain prepare to perform Holst's suite The Planets, novelist Stephen Baxter, who has been commissioned to write a sequel to ‘The War of the Worlds' examines Wells's novels and philosophy. He's joined by science fiction expert and New Generation Thinker Dr Sarah Dillon from the University of Cambridge. The discussion is hosted by Dr Will Abberley from the University of Sussex, another New Generation Thinker. Stephen Baxter is becoming a bit of an icon in my hometown of Brisbane. He's put in his own time and money to foster the start up scene with his River City Labs co-working space.
