Angela Mullenhour's voice is like a force of nature. And nature is kinda scary. Luckily, her band Sybris is the sort of band that can keep up with that force — loud, bold, and capable of summoning up hurricane squalls of melodic noise. After an extended haitus, the beloved Chicago band is back with their long-awaited third record “Gold On Hold” (set for release in September on Absolutely Kosher) and we here at LIFERS couldn't be more excited. On this episode we talk to Angela about rainy street fests, open mic Steve Miller covers, mall-goth, JCM and suckin' on chili dog country, Touched By Ghoul, collaborating with Local H on “8:46”, the psychopathy of Rod Stewart, “All Nerve” by The Breeders, and we pick the best songs about MURDER!

With a little help from the smash hit "Cannonball" on their 1993 album "Last Splash," The Breeders became one of the biggest names in early '90s alternative rock. In 2018, we chatted with the band's lead guitarist and singer Kim Deal. She talked about the music scene in her hometown of Dayton, Ohio, how unintended her success was, transitioning from the Pixies to The Breeders, and what it felt like the first moment she realized that she had written a song that people wanted to dance to. She also talked about The Breeders reuniting for "All Nerve," their first project in almost a decade, which dropped in 2018.

Unfortunately, Joel and I have been quite busy, so we skipped a week. Our episode this week began with us pouring some delicious Belching Beaver Brew, a peanut flavored beer that knocked our socks off. For our FRED talks, Jose discussed the passing of Stephen Hawking, the reknowned astrophysicist who persevered in his work despite suffering from ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease). And Joel quizzed Jose regarding where the Christ's followers were first called Christians-- leading to a discussion about how many of today's refugees from that region are Christians (who call God Allah). We then dived right into part 2 of our discussion about race, ranging from stereotypes to comedy to quotas. We spent a fair bit of time talking about whether or not diversity is something we should care about, as well as the idea that American culture is the most exceptional one on earth. As we wound down, Joel and I both discussed an article that appeared in the Atlantic written by Michael Gerson, entitled The Last Temptation. But Joel also took a few minutes to talk about the Breeders latest album All Nerve, and I couldn't help but nerd-out over the latest Avengers: Infinity War trailer. We hope that you find the conversation informative, and we hope that you will join us next week! Salut!

All Nerve finds The Breeders sounding more ecstatic and less restrained than anytime since Last Splash originally soaked the alt-rock scene. The album manages to do what Kim Deal's ex-bandmates in Pixies have struggled with since returning to the recording studio: that is, sound like the band that fans first fell in love with without ignoring that decades of trials, experiences, and musical ideas have come and gone since then. First up, a Bullseye fav: Jesse chats with Kim Deal of The Breeders about their new album "All Nerve," which drops this week. Also discussed: the Pixies' breakup, best Italian restaurants for live music in Dayton, Ohio, advancements in personal amplification technology in live music. Then, Raoul Peck. The director of "The Young Karl Marx" talks about bringing the personal story of the writer of "The Communist Manifesto" to life. Plus: how to make a narrative film about one of the most consequential philosophies in recent history. Finally, on this week's Outshot, Jesse talks about the work of Curtis Mayfield on his brilliant, underrated debut solo record "Curtis."
We’re fed up with everything. This week’s featured song is “All Nerve” by The Breeders
