Fenbendazole Side Effects in Dogs: What Breeders Need to Know About Rare ReactionsFenbendazole (Panacur) has been a go-to dewormer for veterinarians and breeders for over 40 years — but a rare, life-threatening blood disorder in a 10-month-old French Bulldog is prompting a closer look. Dr. Marty Greer joins host Laura Reeves to share what happened, what it means, and why being an informed consumer of veterinary drugs matters more than ever.Marty shares her experience with a young French Bulldog who developed severe pancytopenia — dangerously low white blood cells, platelets near zero, and declining red blood cells — after a 10-day course of fenbendazole for Giardia. In this episode, Marty and Laura cover:Idiosyncratic vs. idiopathic reactions— what the difference means and why it matters when a drug you trust causes an unexpected responseThe fenbendazole case— a detailed walkthrough of diagnosis, the ruling-out process (parvo, tick-borne disease, vaccines, other drugs), and the treatment that turned it around within 24 hoursThe FDA Dear Veterinarian letter— as of April 2024, pancytopenia had been reported in 12 dogs on fenbendazole; this case may make 13How to report adverse drug reactions— and why that reporting matters for future label updatesMDR-1 gene mutations— which breeds are affected and what drugs to watchTrimethoprim-sulfa (Bactrim/Albon)— breeds at higher risk for platelet drops, including Samoyeds, Dobermans, Goldens and BorzoiTopical flea/tick products— the "heebie-jeebies" skin sensation and what to do if your dog reacts every monthReading package inserts— a practical tip: search for the drug name + "package insert PDF" and use Ctrl+F to find terms like "pregnant," "breeding," or "male"Key takeaway: Fenbendazole remains a safe, widely used drug — but as with any medication, idiosyncratic reactions can happen. PTF sits down with writer and former jumps jockey Sean Clancy to discuss what the next target could be for champion hurdler Constitution Hill following his sensational flat debut at Southwell Racecourse this past Friday. The conversation currently surrounds whether trainer Nicky Henderson will take a chance for a repeat victory in the Champion Hurdle at the Cheltenham festival, but with the recent success of Willie Mullin's hurdler Ethical Diamond in the 2025 Breeders' Cup Turf at Del Mar, PTF and Sean theorize what could be an ambitious flat campaign as well as a potentially more realistic flat campaign in 2026.
JK and Tom Ludt talk his new role as the General Manager at Turf Paradise, his work revitalizing and improving Turf Paradise, the state of racing, and more. Tom Ludt was the former President of Santa Anita Park, Vinery, and the former chairman of the Breeders' Cup.

"Sonic Amadea" Over the course of five perfect albums with Catherine Wheel, including Ferment, Chrome and Adam and Eve, guitarist Brian Futter made his mark as one of the most dynamic players in modern music. Armed with blazing effects and cascading crescendos, Futter's distinguished playing gave the legendary British band their signature sound. After global tours, heavy airplay on MTV, rave reviews and a handful of top ten hits on the U.S. alternative charts, Catherine Wheel hit pause in 2000 and the band's members went their separate ways. Futter was in 50 Foot Monster with Catherine Wheel drummer Neil Sims and he also raised a family and lived his life. Which brings us to Good Day Father. A dream pairing of Futter with Tanya Donnelly of Belly/Throwing Muses and The Breeders, Good Day Father is a legitimate joy. The band's new EP is a sonorous blend of melodic muscle and dreamy rhythms--Donnelly sounds as beguiling as ever while Futter rolls through each number with thrilling intensity. This is just wonderful work. www.gooddayfather.bandcamp.com www.stereoembersmagazine.com (http://www.stereoembersmagazine.com) www.alexgreenbooks.com (http://www.alexgreenbooks.com) www.bombshellradio.com (http://www.bombshellradio.com) IG + BLUESKY + THREADS: @emberspodcast Email: editor@stereoembersmagazine.com

The 4-year-old son of More Than Ready, campaigned by Victory Racing Partners, broke his maiden on second asking in an $84,000 Gulfstream Park MSW at 3. After his win in a $127,000 allowance at Ellis Park, he would only compete at the stakes level. His first black type start was in graded stakes company winning the G3 Manila S. at Belmont Park, defeating a deep field consisting entirely of graded stakes winners and stakes winners. He followed up that victory with a third in the G2 National Museum Racing Hall of Fame S., behind eventual G1 winner Carl Spackler (IRE). More Than Looks followed that race up with a win in the $200,000 Jefferson Cup S. at Churchill Downs by 2 3/4 lengths. He earned the first of his four triple-digit Beyer -101- in this win.Returning to the races at four, More Than Looks ran exclusively in G1 company. His first two starts of 2024 resulted in game second place finishes in the G1 Fourstardave H. at Saratoga and G1 Turf Mile S. at Keeneland, earning a 100 Beyer for his effort in the Turf Mile. Those two races set him up perfectly for an impressive run in the G1 Breeders' Cup Mile, where he defeated a competitive international field consisting of 8 G1 winners. With the Breeders' Cup victory he earned his highest career Beyer speed figure of 105 and brought his earnings to a total of $1,870,715.“He's an eye-catching horse that showed elite ability from day one,” said trainer Cherie DeVaux of More Than Looks. “His explosive turn of foot and competitive nature led to consistency at the highest level, and ultimately resulted in him becoming a Breeders' Cup Champion.”Bred by Hinkle Farms, More Than Looks hails from the female family of multiple G1 winner Critical Eye. His black type winning dam, Ladies' Privilege - a $575,000 Keeneland November purchase, by Harlan's Holiday, is a full sister to multiple graded stakes winner Takeover Target.More Than Looks' sire More Than Ready is a leading sire of Breeders' Cup winners and wins, with 7 individual winners accumulating 8 wins. An international success, More Than Ready has sired nearly a 120 black type winners, almost 50 graded stakes winners and 13 G1 winners.

Martin Freeman is one of the most sought-after actors of his generation. Whether it's Tim in The Office, John - the mild-mannered porn actor in Love Actually, Watson in Sherlock, Bilbo in The Hobbit, the stressed parent in Breeders, the Liverpudlian cop with personal problems in The Responder and Everett K. Ross in Marvel Cinematic Universe smash hits Captain America and Black Panther - Freeman is a star, and to date has won two Emmys and a BAFTA. In this episode, Martin reflects on his childhood as the youngest of five (comparatively modest when you consider his mother was one of fourteen!) as well as the lasting impact of losing his father at ten years old. We talk about parenting, the people who've inspired him (hello, Michael Caine), the future of AI from a technophobe's perspective, his unease with fame and the quieter failures that sit behind public success. Plus: strap yourself in for much hilarity. I don't think I can remember a guest who made me laugh QUITE this much. Martin can next be seen as the determined Superintendent Battle in Netflix's new Agatha Christie adaptation, Seven Dials. ✨ IN THIS EPISODE: 00:00 Introduction 02:22 Dealing with Fame and Anxiety 05:12 The Everyman Label 07:35 Exploring Anger and Authenticity 16:28 Academic Struggles and Early Acting 20:33 Personal Reflections and Family 28:08 Comparing to Heroes 32:15 The Office and Sherlock 40:29 Technology Struggles 44:20 AI Concerns 47:47 Meeting Michael Caine

He saw childhood hero Burton Cummings of The Guess Who at the North Shore Center for Performing Arts after accidentally meeting him in the lobby without recognizing him, caught Michael Schenker's 50 Years with UFO celebration at the Desplaines Theater, and scored a last-minute ninth-row ticket to see Robert Plant at the intimate Vic Theatre, where the Led Zeppelin legend performed six classic songs including an electrifying version of Ramble On that earned a rare standing ovation.Charles rounds out the discussion by mentioning his own concert experiences at new Chicago venues including Space in Evanston where he saw Mdou Moctar and The Old 97s, the female-focused Motoblot festival at Beat Kitchen, an incredible Buddy Guy performance at the Rialto Square Theater where the 89-year-old blues legend walked through the aisles playing guitar, shows at the new Garcia's venue and City Winery, and his anticipation for an upcoming Iron Maiden show. The creator of a new-media source for racing news and an old-school horseplayer who created a counterintuitive way of betting are featured this week on the Ron Flatter Racing Pod. Carlos Morales, the creator of Agentes 305, talks about the growth of his social-media platform and how it has become a go-to place for behind-the-scenes interviews in English and Spanish. He discusses his start as a radio personality in his native Venezuela and his move to the United States to advance his career in horse racing. Matt Miller, the 2021 Breeders' Cup Betting Challenge, wrote the book A Bettor Way of Thinking. He talks about his strategies for betting on races and in handicapping tournaments. One step he takes is avoiding past performances. He also discusses why he and his fellow Chicagoland players have been so successful in high-profile tournaments. Co-hosts John Cherwa of the Los Angeles Times and Keith Nelson of Fairmount Park share anecdotes about what is trending on social media, an e-game that might be all too real and the perils of waking up at odd hours in the winter. Discussion and debate about the 2025 Eclipse Awards are featured on the first 2026 episode of the Ron Flatter Racing Pod. Sara Elbadwi of Fox Sports and the New York Racing Association, Steve Kornacki of NBC News and Sports, Jessica Paquette from Parx and two-time Eclipse Award-winning writer John Scheinman from Baltimore get together in a panel discussion going in-depth on every championship category. Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes winner Sovereignty may be the leading candidate for horse of the year, but did Breeders' Cup Classic victor Forever Young do enough in his one U.S. appearance to change voters' minds? The panel talks about that possibility and the potential backlash against connections for holding Sovereignty out of the Preakness Stakes. There are plenty of clashing opinions and even a discussion about contentious abstentions from the votes for the steeplechase horse and apprentice jockey. Co-hosts John Cherwa of the Los Angeles Times and Keith Nelson of Fairmount Park also weigh in with their overarching views of the Eclipse Awards, including ideas on how they ought to be changed. The Ron Flatter Racing Pod via Horse Racing Nation is available via free subscription from Apple, Firefox, iHeart and Spotify as well as HorseRacingNation.com.
Jason continues his look back at 2025, talking about the Preakness and Belmont, the summer meets, and fall Breeders' Cup preps.
As the year comes to a close, it's natural to start thinking about what you want next from your cats, your breeding program, and yourself as a breeder. In this episode, I'm sharing a real end of year reflection on what I've seen throughout 2025 and why so many breeders feel unsure when it comes time to plan ahead. I talk about• what I've learned from travelling and being part of the global cat fancy• what I see again and again with new and developing breeders• why overwhelm and second guessing are so common• how confidence actually builds over time• and why knowing where you're starting matters more than any plan you make I also share how this year forced me to reassess everything personally and professionally, and why having the right support makes such a difference when life gets complicated. This episode is for you if• you want to do things properly• you feel unsure about your next steps• you're tired of guessing• you want to feel calmer and more confident with your cats Before you plan next year, work out where you are now. The postponed opening day at Santa Anita and a Pegasus preview at Gulfstream Park are the main points of discussion this week in the final 2025 episode of the Ron Flatter Racing Pod. Horse owner, player and handicapper Jon Lindo previews Sunday's card at Santa Anita. That is where Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert has five entrants in the $300,000 Malibu Stakes, the last Grade 1 race of the season for 3-year-olds. He also examines the latest developments in the future of racing in Southern California. Mark Cornett of C2 Racing Stable talks about White Abarrio, who is entered in the Mr. Prospector (G3) on Saturday at Gulfstream. The race is a prep for next month's Pegasus World Cup Invitational (G1), which White Abarrio won last year. Cornett also talks about the controversial veterinarian scratch of the multimillionaire horse from the Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile. Handicapper Ed DeRosa examines weekend races on both coasts and offers tips for bettors. Purebred Dogs: Living History on Our Couch | A Year-End Reflection As we come to the close of another year — one that has been long, challenging, and filled with upheaval both globally and within the purebred dog fancy — it felt right to pause, reflect and remember why we do what we do. One of the great comforts of purebred dogs is their reliability. No matter what else is happening in the world, somewhere nearby there is a dog event — a show, a trial, a hunt test, a training day. These gatherings give us a chosen family: people who console us when times are hard, celebrate with us when times are good, and understand the passion that binds us together. On the Shoulders of Giants In dog breeding, one of my favorite phrases is “on the shoulders of giants.” While famous handlers may get the television time, the true unsung heroes of purebred dogs are the breeders. Breeders are the devoted advocates and curators of living history. Their imagination, vision, commitment, and endurance preserve breeds that represent centuries — sometimes millennia — of human partnership with dogs. And yet, too often, when master breeders pass, their hard-earned knowledge disappears with them. Pure Dog Talk was created, in part, to save and share that irreplaceable wisdom. Through our podcast archives, albums, and seminars, we aim to preserve the voices, stories, and experience of the best and brightest breeders worldwide — so that future generations don't have to reinvent what has already been learned. Purebred Dogs as Living History Every one of the 200+ breeds recognized by the American Kennel Club — and many more worldwide — represents a specific time, place, and human culture. Purebred dogs are a living, breathing continuum of history. Pedigrees bring that history directly into our homes. Some breeding records trace back thousands of years. Long before formal breed standards existed, early humans were selectively breeding dogs for climate adaptation, specialized diets, hunting ability, and companionship. Recent research has even reshaped our understanding of ancient breeds: TheGreenland Dogis now considered the oldest known dog breed, tracing back to the Pleistocene era.Basenjis, depicted in cave art dating to 6,000 BC, possess uniquely distinct DNA.Greyhoundsdescribed in a 15th-century poem still match the breed standard today — and every modern Greyhound traces back to a single dog whelped in England in 1839.Bedlington Terriersboast the oldest unbroken terrier pedigree, dating to 1782.Ancient breeds like theChow...
A holiday celebration turns into a world tour with visits with friends from Japan, England and Australia this week on the Ron Flatter Racing Pod. Kate Hunter checks in from her home base in Japan, where Forever Young provided bookended highlights this year with his triumphs in the Group 1 Saudi Cup and the Breeders' Cup Classic. The Nashville native who has been based for 17 years across the Pacific also looks ahead to Kentucky Derby 2026, a race Japan still has on its to-do list. Senior writer Lee Mottershead of Racing Post offers Europe's year-end review from England. He highlights Calandagan's rise to stardom with victories in the King George (G1) and British Champion (G1) before a rare win for international interests last month in the Japan Cup (G1). He also describes the impact of the controversial Great Britain government affordability checks on horseplayers, and he has an update on his cancer diagnosis from this summer. Steve Moran, a longtime racing journalist in Australia, joins in a conversation from Melbourne. He highlights Jamie Melham's pioneering victory aboard Half Yours in the Melbourne Cup (G1) marking only the second time a woman has ridden to victory in the race that stops a nation. There also is his check list of three tracks all racing fans must visit in their lifetimes. Co-hosts John Cherwa of the Los Angeles Times and Keith Nelson from Fairmount Park talk about their Christmas plans and remember some some off-beat celebrations from years past. In our final episode of the series, we hear from Dana Filatova of Kismet Labradoodles in Ashville, NC, as she recounts the essential, sometimes challenging, lessons learned from her very first litter. Dana's debut litter was unexpectedly large—a "bonus-sized" group of eleven puppies! She takes us behind the scenes, sharing the unexpected obstacles and triumphs that came with managing such a big group. Most importantly, Dana reveals how the experience of raising those first eleven puppies forced her to redefine her ideal puppy buyer, shifting her focus and strategy to ensure the perfect fit for every single puppy. This interview is a powerful reminder that sometimes the biggest lessons come not from research, but from the actual process of breeding.

Andrea explains how the principles of genetic selection and program management she learned in Ag Ed apply directly to her Poodle program, leading to a thoughtful, data-driven approach. She views her role as not just a breeder, but as a teacher, emphasizing the crucial importance of thoroughly educating buyers so that every Desert Sky puppy can achieve its full potential. Join us to learn how embracing an educational philosophy can revolutionize your breeding selection, buyer relationships, and overall view of your program.
We sit down with Megan Smith of Acadia Goldendoodles in Maine, who proves that responsible breeding can—and should—be a joy. After 17 years in the game, Megan has cracked the code on sustainability and enjoyment. She takes us on a tour of her spectacular facility, which we've affectionately dubbed a "summer camp for dogs," designed for maximum enrichment, wellbeing, and ease in managing around 20 breeding dogs at a time. Megan also explains her decision to focus exclusively on F1 and F1b generations of Goldendoodles, detailing the specific reasons and goals behind that choice. Through it all, she emphasizes the critical role of continuous education and improvement in maintaining an ethical program over nearly two decades. Whether you're a new breeder or a veteran, you'll gain creative insights into how Megan maintains her passion and makes breeding a rewarding, long-term career.
Leilani Nichols of Northwest Cairn Terriers in Oregon joins us to share her unique approach to breeding and placement. In a world where every puppy looks cute, Leilani uses her marketing to target buyers who are truly ready for the specific challenges of a clever, feisty Cairn Terrier, ensuring a perfect long-term match. She also offers fascinating, hard-won insights into the difference between dogs bred solely for show ring success versus those bred specifically for temperament and personality. Leilani's commitment to matching the right personality to the right home proves that honesty and strategic communication are the keys to building a sustainable and ethical breeding program.
Meet Sarah Whitman of Bonnie Brae Collies, who just sold her first litter of puppies. Sarah's experience working in accredited zoos with rhinos and elephants fundamentally shaped her approach to breeding. She shares how her deep dive into population genetics led her to Collies and a registry with an open book that allows for intentional diversity planning, moving beyond closed gene pools. This episode is a must-listen for anyone feeling constrained by legal restrictions on dog breeding, as Sarah is creatively working with state and local laws to shape and structure her program. She discusses the practical constraints and opportunities presented by her Colorado location, discussing how she's building a responsible, sustainable program that is still completely compliant with local laws.
In this 12 Days of Breeders interview, we welcome Andrea Jones of Maple Hill Doodles in Ohio. A 25-year veteran breeder of Goldendoodles, Cavapoos, and Cavadoodles, Andrea has built her program on advanced, and sometimes unconventional, health protocols. Andrea shares her techniques for holistic management, detailing the logistics of maintaining a non-vaccination protocol for her entire program, underpinned by a raw, species-appropriate diet. Critically, Andrea reveals how she's raised the bar for buyers to solidify her own credibility, demanding a higher standard of commitment from her clientele. This episode is essential listening for any breeder looking to bring more holistic rearing into their program, covering not only her dog management techniques, but also her non-negotiable business rules: maintaining a mandatory financial escrow for emergencies, ensuring all contracts are attorney-reviewed and ironclad, and utilizing rigorous structural health clearances (OFA Hips/Elbows) that go beyond standard genetic testing.
In this 12 Days of Breeders interview, we welcome Bill Wyatt of DubDub Danes in Bentonville, Arkansas. After a career in high-level sales, Bill applies his deep customer service acumen to breeding, expertly guiding buyers so they feel supported, not sold to. Bill shares his lifelong love for Great Danes and gives an honest look at the immense logistics of managing a breeding business for giant dogs, covering everything from the astronomical feed (and poop) to a size-appropriate socialization protocol. You'll learn how he uses professional business standards to structure the entire customer journey and why his experience with Great Danes has made him passionate about temperament in breeding selection. This episode is a great listen for any breeder navigating a niche market or looking to transform their customer relationships.
Today, we dive into the highly specialized world of German Shepherd service dogs with Cynthia Kelly of Regis Regal German Shepherds. Cynthia shares the unique, rigorous process she has developed for raising, training, and placing her dogs, many of whom work with children with autism. She takes intentional breeding and socialization to the next level, enabling her to provide service dogs who have amazing ways of helping people, from providing a sense of safety and security, to preventing elopement of children, to providing life-saving intervention for people with epilepsy and diabetes. Learn about her foundational standards for long-term genetic clearance (focusing on at least eight to ten generations of clear bloodlines) and her unique philosophy on what it takes to create and train a successful service dog. Cynthia proves that with the right lineage and the highest level of foundational work, the potential for these magnificent dogs to serve humans is truly limitless.
For Day 4 of 12 Days of Breeders, we welcome Kari Roach of Choice Paws in Utah. Kari's journey is highly strategic: a former pre-med student, after starting out as a guardian home, she ended up buying an established breeding business program. This rare and successful move allowed her to immediately apply her health science discipline, bringing a rigorous, systems-based approach to her Cavapoo program. You'll learn how Kari made the journey from guardian home to purchasing a breeding business, how she meticulously documents health testing and structure, implements a deep, structured curriculum including ENS and scent work to optimize puppy confidence, and details of her social media strategy to showcase integrity, justify premium pricing, and attract educated buyers. You'll also hear the heart she brings to her dogs, buyers, and guardian families. If you are ready to stop treating breeding as a hobby and start running a high-caliber program driven by both meticulous standards and genuine passion, this episode is mandatory listening.
