Gang of Four's Entertainment! is the moment post‑punk stopped being a scene and started sounding like a threat. This 1979 debut didn't just tweak punk's formula—it rewired it, turning guitars into percussion, bass into a funk‑driven anchor, and lyrics into a full‑frontal critique of capitalism, modern life, and what it even means to be “punk” in the first place. In this episode of Dig Me Out, Jason, Tim, and Chip dig into how Entertainment! won a razor‑thin community poll over The Damned, Lone Star, and Throbbing Gristle, then unpack why listeners still fight for this record decades later. They trace the band's tangled history (from Jon King and Andy Gill's art‑school origins to ever‑changing lineups), break down the album's knife‑edge guitar work and robotic‑yet‑human rhythms, and explore how songs like “Ether,” “Damaged Goods,” “At Home He's a Tourist,” and “Anthrax” smuggle political theory, biblical references, and literary nods into two‑to‑three‑minute agit‑funk blasts. Along the way, they connect the dots from late‑70s Leeds to 2000s dance‑punk, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Local H, and beyond—asking what it really means for a rock record to be influential, not just influential‑sounding. If you're into post‑punk, punk, or art‑damaged guitar music that actually swings, this one's for you. Fans of Wire, Public Image Ltd., The Clash's more experimental side, and 2000s bands like The Rapture, Bloc Party, and Franz Ferdinand will hear exactly where their favorite angular riffs and dance‑floor grooves came from.---Episode Highlights• 0:00 – Intro – How a community poll pitted Gang of Four against The Damned, Lone Star, and Throbbing Gristle, and why Entertainment! edged out the win• 5:12 – Setting the stage – Late‑70s Leeds, art school punks, and how Gang of Four stitched punk, funk, reggae, and dub into something new• 13:30 – “Ether” – Opening track breakdown: rhythmic knife‑edge guitars, politicized lyrics, and the groove that anchors the chaos• 20:45 – Rhythm as revolution – Why the band treats guitars and vocals like percussion, and how their subtractive choruses flip rock song structure on its head• 27:10 – “Natural's Not In” & “Not Great Men” – Capitalism, bodies as “good business,” biblical and literary references, and the link to Manic Street Preachers‑style lyric nerdery• 34:30 – “Damaged Goods” – The band's de facto anthem: from angular verses to that stripped‑back chorus, and how it became a template for generations of bands• 42:05 – “At Home He's a Tourist” & “5.45” – Melodica lines, TV‑age dread, and the way the record feels both 1979 and weirdly timeless• 50:20 – “Anthrax” – Dual vocals, anti‑love‑song energy, and how the band turns noise, rant, and groove into something iconic• 58:40 – Influence and aftershocks – From Flea and Red Hot Chili Peppers to The Rapture, Bloc Party, Franz Ferdinand, Local H, and Run the Jewels sampling “Ether”• 1:06:15 – Does it still work front to back? – The guys debate the 40‑minute runtime, favorite cuts, what they'd trim, and whether Entertainment! is best as full album or curated gateway• 1:13:50 – Final verdicts – Where Entertainment! lands in the Gang of Four catalog, why it's still required listening, and who this record is really for---If you love digging into the stories behind post‑punk, late‑70s rock, and the records that quietly rewrote the rulebook, hit follow and subscribe so you don't miss future episodes. LIVE EVENT: General Witchfinders x Tasel & Skylark BooksJoin the General Witchfinders for our first-ever live show! We are partnering with Dorchester's premier bookshop, Tasel and Skylark, for a night of high-strung atmosphere and folk horror.Date: Tuesday 5th MayVenue: Kings Arms Hotel, DorchesterFeaturing: Live music, exclusive story readings, a deep-dive talk on Folk Horror, and the official launch of our brand-new zine.Tickets are strictly limited – grab yours now at www.generalwitchfinders.comThe Medusa Touch (1978): Richard Burton and the Power of CatastropheIn this episode, we investigate the 1978 supernatural horror thriller The Medusa Touch. Directed by Jack Gold and adapted from the Peter Van Greenaway novel, The Medusa Touch is a quintessential piece of seventies British cinema that sits at the dark intersection of the disaster movie and the occult thriller. The film follows the investigation into the apparent murder of John Morlar, played with volcanic intensity by Richard Burton.Richard Burton is the undeniable gravitational centre of The Medusa Touch. Despite Richard Burton only filming for three weeks and demanding a massive upfront fee, his presence as the telekinetic John Morlar defines the movie's grim atmosphere. We discuss how Richard Burton portrayed a man who believed his thoughts could cause jumbo jets to crash and cathedrals to crumble. Interestingly, because of Richard Burton's high cost, his character is often seen heavily bandaged in a hospital bed, allowing a stand-in to do the heavy lifting while Richard Burton provided the piercing close-ups and that legendary voice.Fans of 90s rock will know that a specific line from Richard Burton in The Medusa Touch – ‘I will bring the whole edifice down on their unworthy heads' – was famously sampled by the Manic Street Preachers. This misanthropic energy is what makes John Morlar such a compelling antagonist. Throughout our review of The Medusa Touch, we explore how Richard Burton channeled his own real-life disillusionment into the role of John Morlar, creating a performance that feels both radioactive and world-weary.The supporting cast of The Medusa Touch is equally impressive. We look at Lino Ventura as Detective-Inspector Brunel, the man tasked with solving the mystery of John Morlar. Since The Medusa Touch was a co-production between the UK and France, Ventura provides a gritty, European perspective to this very British tale of destruction. Lee Remick, known for her work in The Omen, appears here as Dr Zonfeld, the psychiatrist who holds the keys to understanding the psychic pressure building inside John Morlar. We also dive into the rich layer of British character actors that populates The Medusa Touch. From Jeremy Brett, the future Sherlock Holmes, playing the man who steals John Morlar's wife, to the ubiquitous Harry Andrews and Gordon Jackson, The Medusa Touch serves as a ‘who's who' of the era's talent. We even touch upon the vocal work of David de Keyser, whose rich tones dubbed Ventura and appeared in everything from Superman to Doctor Who.Whether you are a fan of seventies horror, telekinesis films, or the legendary career of Richard Burton, this deep dive into The Medusa Touch has something for you. We examine the film's legacy, its sociopolitical commentary, and the sheer technical spectacle of the climactic cathedral collapse.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/general-witchfinders. Send in your music story!A famed musician vanishes, a car is left by a notorious bridge, and the clues refuse to agree. We dig into the disappearance of Richey Edwards, the intensely creative guitarist and lyricist of Manic Street Preachers, and follow the breadcrumb trail from London hotel checkouts and steady ATM withdrawals to a vehicle found near the Severn Bridge with empty bottles but no note, no body, and no closure. What begins as a straightforward timeline spirals into a maze of possibilities—suicide, foul play, or a meticulous plan to start again far from the pressures of fame.We walk through what we know for sure, what can be reasonably inferred, and where speculation starts to run ahead of facts. Richey's political writing and personal struggles form a stark backdrop: depression, alcoholism, and anorexia intersected with lyrics that stared down geopolitical tension and the rot at the edges of culture. Then there are the sightings—London, Europe, India, Indonesia, South Africa—each one a spark that either lights a path forward or throws us off the scent. Without surveillance footage or digital breadcrumbs, the mid-90s setting becomes its own character: a time when slipping the grid was hard but not impossible.Along the way, we explore how the band carried on as a three-piece without replacing him, preserving Richey's credit and royalties while evolving their sound and audience. The result is a story about identity, loyalty, and the cost of chasing meaning inside the machine of music. Was the cash a travel fund or a red herring? Does a bridge signal tragedy or theatre? We don't promise answers. We offer the most coherent map through uncertainty—and the empathy to sit with it.If mysteries at the edge of music, mental health, and culture fascinate you, hit play. Then send us your theory: did Richey choose a different life, or did the river keep its secret? Your weekly guide to the music biz and how it all works – and this week they speak to Ricky Bates, head of booking and promotion at the Joiners in Southampton - one of the UK's great grassroots venues. But first they chat about:Half a million pounds is being distributed in the UK to grassroots venues artists and events - and it's money gathered from the levy on ticket sales in the UK. Steve and Stu discuss how this money is being spent – and how it will make a difference.Last week, Steve spoke to highly successful UK manager Niamh Byrne (Blur, Gorillaz and more) and you'll be able to hear that interview in a couple of weeks. But one notable thing she spoke about was how managers are working harder than ever, and need to provide more services than before. So what is a manager's job now? Also at the Music Ally Connect conference, a key Universal music exec spoke about how AI can create new songs when one song is “covered” by AI versions of other artists: “I really want to hear what it sounds like for Jimi Hendrix to play Bitches Brew”. But do people really want to hear AI-generated cover versions? Then the duo speak to Ricky Bates and he discusses the reality of running a local grassroots venue in 2026 – and it's a solid-gold local venue that has hosted most of today's biggest bands on their way up. It's where both Coldplay and Manic Street Preachers signed their first deals, and how Green Day "accidentally" played their Kerplunk! album launch show at the Joiners. There's plenty of festive energy left with Stuart Maconie and guests in the Loose Ends twixtmas studio:Taskmaster champion Maisie Adams tells us how she got in touch with her previously hidden competition-demon on the show, her highly-flammable competition outfit and that nailbiting finish, as well as revving up for a new tour in 2026. ITV's hit drama Red Eye is back for a second season on New Year's Day and its star Jing Lusi tells us about reprising her role as the kickboxing DI Hanna Li. She thinks DI Li would not approve of her penchant for Romcoms and fitness avoidance. And Radio 3's Elizabeth Alker outlines how rock and pop musicians from The Beatles to Radiohead to Manic Street Preachers owe a debt to classical music with tales from her new book Everything We Do Is Music. She also has tales of her rockstar Yorkshire terrier Terry who rules the roost at her house in December and well, all year round really.Plus inspiring music for the turning of the year from Thea Gilmore and from Carly Mercedes Dyer singing You Are My Lucky Star from the musical Singing in the Rain.Producer: Olive Clancy Assistant producer: Sam Nixon Technical producers: John Cole & John Benton Production coordinator: Pete Liggins

Timestamp to skip the intro: (11:00) Welcome back to another episode of the True Crime Society Podcast. In this episode we discuss two separate cases of missing celebrities: Joseph Pichler was a child star, best known for his roles in films such as Varsity Blues, Beethoven's 3rd and Beethoven's 4th. In 2006, Joseph's vehicle was found abandoned in Washington State with a note indicating that his belongings should go to his brother. Now, 19 years later, Joseph remains missing. Musician Richey Edwards was part of the British band ‘Manic Street Preachers.' Richey had a documented history of mental health and addiction struggles. Once when he was questioned about being serious about his music, he carved the words ‘4 Real' into his arm with a razor blade. The injury required 18 stitches. In February 2005, Richey was due to leave London to fly to the United States to begin a press tour. Instead, he left behind some of his belongings in his hotel and drove back to his apartment in Cardiff, Wales. Over the next few weeks, there were reported sightings of Richey in that country. His car would later be found abandoned near a bridge. Reported sightings of Richey have come from India and Spain. Richey has now been missing for over 20 years. Read our blog for these cases - https://truecrimesocietyblog.com/2025/12/15/missing-celebrities-joe-pichler-and-richey-edwards/ We will be taking next week off from the podcast to spend the holiday with our families. On a grey February morning in 1995, one of rock's most enigmatic voices stepped out of a London hotel room - and into one of music's most enduring mysteries. The Manic Street Preachers' lyricist - Richey Edwards - brilliant, fragile, and beloved - left behind a life heavy with pressure and pain. After his disappearance, his car was found near the Severn Bridge, a place weighted with symbolism and sorrow. Richey himself was gone. No sightings. No answers. Just a trail that stops cold on the border between England and Wales. Listen as we dive into the Britpop Era of London, the case of Richey Edwards, and how to stay alive on vacation. This month we travel back to a banger of a year for our favourite songs of 1992, including proto-post rock, hiphop classics, industrial metal, and enough shoegaze to open a branch of Specsavers opposite a branch of Foot Locker. We've each chosen our 10 favourite songs of the year and sent them over to Colin's wife Helen, who put the playlists together and distributed them so we were each given a playlist of the 20 songs from the other two hosts, along with our own 10. We then ranked the playlists in order of preference and sent them back to Helen, who totalled up the points and worked out the order. She also joined us on the episode to read out the countdown, which we found out as we recorded so all reactions are genuine. Now, admittedly, in parts we're a little bit brutal to some of the songs in the list as we're three separate people with differing music tastes, but please remember that to be in this episode at all the songs have to have been in one of our top 10's of that year.Bands featured in this episode include (In alphabetical order, no spoilers here!) -Alice In Chains, Tori Amos, Biohazard, Buffalo Tom, The Cure, Del Amitri, Drop Nineteens, The God Machine, Juliana Hatfield, Helmet, House Of Pain, Ice Cube, The Lemonheads, Manic Street Preachers, Medicine, Ministry, Moonshake, Nine Inch Nails, Pavement, PJ Harvey, The Prodigy, Rage Against The Machine, Red House Painters, Shakespeare's Sister, The Shamen, Sleep, The Smashing Pumkins, Sugar, Therapy?, & White Zombie. The scoring of our own list of 10 is now slightly more complicated in order to give a truer level of points to our own favourites. So rather than them only being able to score as many points as our 10th favourite in the other list, the points in our own list were distributed as follows -1st place - 20 points2nd place - 18 points3rd place – 16 points4th place – 14 points5th place – 12 points6th place – 9 points7th place – 7 points8th place – 5 points9th place – 3 points10th place -1 pointHosts - Ian Clarke, Colin Jackson-Brown & Tracey BGuest starring Helen Jackson-Brown.Playlist compiling/distributing – Helen Jackson-BrownRecorded/Edited/Mixed/Original Music by Colin Jackson-Brown for We Dig PodcastsThanks to Peter Latimer for help with the scoring system.Part of the We Dig Podcasts network along with Free With This Months Issue & Pick A Disc.Bluesky - https://bsky.app/profile/wedigmusic.bsky.socialInstagram - https://www.instagram.com/wedigmusicpcast/Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/wedigpusicpcast/Find our other episodes & podcasts at www.wedigpodcasts.com

This week I'm joined by author and music critic Keith Cameron (Mudhoney: The Sound and the Fury From Seattle, 168 Songs of Hatred and Failure: A History of Manic Street Preachers), who picked the documentary I'M NOW: THE STORY OF MUDHONEY to dive into.We discuss our relationship with the British musical weeklies and how Keith ended up working for them, the power of Radio One DJ John Peel, Keith trying to get his favorite bands on the cover of the NME, the Mudhoney riot at the School of Oriental & African Studies in 1989 (where Mark Arm invited the entire audience onstage before the first note), cracking Green River, seeing Mudhoney's 2nd show opening for White Zombie, the brilliance and haphazardness of SubPop, Jack Endino asking the band if they really wanted to sound like they did while recording them, Mudoney saving SubPop's label at their lowest point, how Caroline records wanted to polish up Mudhoney, the follies of indie labels & the notion of selling out, Mark Arm as a world class lyricist, Keith visiting Seattle & interviewing Nirvana at the time they were kicking out Dan Peters of Mudhoney and replacing him with Dave Grohl, touring with Nirvana vs. Pearl Jam, the handheld camera tour footage of the band, Keith spending time in Mudhoney's childhood locations, Matt Lukin leaving the band and Guy Maddison replacing him, the obstacles and triumphs of continuing to making music for nearly 40 years and more!So let's collectively make the stage collapse on this week's episode of Revolutions Per Movie!!!Keith Cameron:https://keithcameron.co.uk/about-me/https://www.mojo4music.com/author/keith-cameron/REVOLUTIONS PER MOVIE:Host Chris Slusarenko (Eyelids, Guided By Voices, owner of Clinton Street Video rental store) is joined by actors, musicians, comedians, writers & directors who each week pick out their favorite music documentary, musical, music-themed fiction film or music videos to discuss. For this episode — the first to feature RBP's editorial co-ordinator William Pike — we're joined by Melody Maker legend Simon Price for a discussion of his career, his championing of Manic Street Preachers, and Radiohead's first tour since 2018. Beginning in the South Wales town of Barry, we hear about Simon's boyhood, his formative pop passions and the first of his distinctive sartorial metamorphoses. He recalls his late '80s move to London and the years at Melody Maker that took in his first interviews with fellow Welshmen the Manics and his integral involvement in the Neo-glam sub-genre known as Romo. Our guest's review of the first Radiohead album provides the cue for clips from Amy Linden's 1997 audio interview with Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood. We hear Thom talking about the just-released OK Computer and about his beef with Melody Maker itself: this prompts a general discussion of the band's standing as they prepare for the first date of their European tour. After reflecting on the 13 years he spent reviewing gigs for the Independent on Sunday, Simon discusses the gestation of 2021's Curepedia, the "Cure A-Z" he assembled for White Rabbit books. We conclude the episode with tributes to jazz drummer Jack DeJohnette and keyboardist David Ball, phlegmatic foil to Soft Cell frontman Marc Almond. Many thanks to special guest Simon Price. Curepedia: An A–Z of the Cure is published by White Rabbit and available from all good bookshops. Pieces discussed: Articles, interviews and reviews from Simon Price, Manic Street Preachers: Drags to Riches, Radiohead: Pablo Honey, Radiohead audio (1997), Jack DeJohnette: More Than One Way, Soft Cell: Cell Division and The Tainted Life of Soft Cell

Owen Hatherley returns to discuss his New Left Review article on the Welsh guitar band, the Manic Street Preachers. We talked about the particular appeal the group seemed to hold for working class kids from non-metropolitan backgrounds in the 1990s, and about the forbearance and occasional embarrassment that is the lot of fans who've followed their work in the subsequent decades. We also talked about why such an avowedly left wing and politicised group have shown such little regard for contemporary left movements such as the Corbyn moment in the UK.
