Join Here: https://ow.ly/msoH50WCu0KThe Notorious Mass Effect segment delivers a detailed breakdown of Bruno Mars' long-awaited solo return with The Romantic, released February 27, 2026, via Atlantic Records. Hosted by Analytic Dreamz, this analysis covers the 9-track, 31-minute album—his first solo project in nearly a decade since 24K Magic (2016)—blending retro-soul, disco-pop, funk, 1970s influences (Curtis Mayfield, Philly soul), and Latin elements like bolero, cha-cha, and mariachi for a crooner-forward, romantic vibe timed near Valentine's.Lead single “I Just Might” (January 9, 2026) debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 with retro-funk/disco energy and a Leo Sayer interpolation. Follow-up “Risk It All” dropped with the album, featuring mariachi-styled visuals and wedding-themed romance. Early streaming shows strong momentum on Spotify and Apple Music, boosted by billions from recent hits “Die With a Smile” (with Lady Gaga, 2025 Grammy winner) and “APT.” (with Rosé, Grammy-nominated).Critical reception is mixed: praise for vocal polish, production, and crowd-pleasing retro-soul (Rolling Stone: positive crowd-pleaser; NME: 4/5 mature persona), but some critique homage-heavy predictability and sentimentality (Paste: D+ overly sentimental). Physical editions include translucent red and gold vinyl for collectors.Analytic Dreamz highlights strategic insights: short runtime for high completion/replay rates, playlist-friendly nostalgia, Latin market expansion, wedding/event utility for long-tail streams, catalog halo from legacy smashes (“Just the Way You Are,” “Versace on the Floor”), and steady streaming over viral spikes. The Romantic Tour kicks off early April 2026 in Las Vegas (Allegiant Stadium), spanning North America through late May, Europe (Paris, Berlin, Amsterdam, Madrid, Milan, London) late June–mid July, and back to U.S./Vancouver by mid-October. Features Anderson .Paak as DJ Pee .Wee, plus select supports like Leon Thomas, Raye, Victoria Monet. This polished, formula-consistent revival reinforces Bruno's retro-romantic brand, leveraging hiatus demand and prior collaborations for sustained commercial longevity.Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/analytic-dreamz-notorious-mass-effect/exclusive-contentPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

For our february episode we finally complete the 70s by discussing our favourite songs of 1974! You can expect lots of prog, much more krautrock than expected (particularly from Tracey), some funk classics, sparkly glam bangers, and most of the members of The Byrds. We've each chosen our 10 favourite songs of the year and sent them over to Colin's wife Helen, who put the playlists together and distributed them so we were each given a playlist of the 20 songs from the other two hosts, along with our own 10. We then ranked the playlists in order of preference and sent them back to Helen, who totalled up the points and worked out the order. She also joined us on the episode to read out the countdown, which we found out as we recorded so all reactions are genuine. Now, admittedly, in parts we're a little bit brutal to some of the songs in the list as we're three separate people with differing music tastes, but please remember that to be in this episode at all the songs have to have been in one of our top 10's of that year.Bands featured in this episode include (In alphabetical order, no spoilers here!) - Kevin Ayers, Big Star, David Bowie, James Brown, Captain Beefheart & The Magic Band, Gene Clark, Cluster, Deep Purple, Brian Eno, Focus, Fred Frith, Harmonia, Keith Hudson, King Crimson, Kiss, Kraftwerk, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Curtis Mayfield, Roger McGuinn, Mike Oldfield, Parliament, Gram Parsons, Pilot, Queen, Roxy Music, The Sensational Alex Harvey Band, Sparks, Steely Dan, Tangerine Dream, & Rick Wakeman.Find all songs in alphabetical order here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/5DIrU8fLeTxerh4wHJTWDq?si=6e2bfca9066b44e2Find our We Dig Music Pollwinners Party playlist (featuring all of the winning songs up until now) here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/45zfDHo8zm6VqrvoEQSt3z?si=Ivt0oMj6SmitimvumYfFrQIf you want to listen to megalength playlists of all the songs we've individually picked since we started doing best of the year episodes (which need updating but I plan on doing them over the next few months or so), you can listen to Colin's here – https://open.spotify.com/playlist/5x3Vy5Jry2IxG9JNOtabRT?si=HhcVKRCtRhWCK1KucyrDdgIan's here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2H0hnxe6WX50QNQdlfRH5T?si=XmEjnRqISNqDwi30p1uLqAand Tracey's here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2p3K0n8dKhjHb2nKBSYnKi?si=7a-cyDvSSuugdV1m5md9NwThe playlist of 20 songs from the other two hosts was scored as usual, our favourite song got 20 points, counting down incrementally to our least favourite which got 1 point. The scoring of our own list of 10 is now slightly more complicated in order to give a truer level of points to our own favourites. So rather than them only being able to score as many points as our 10th favourite in the other list, the points in our own list were distributed as follows -1st place - 20 points2nd place - 18 points3rd place – 16 points4th place – 14 points5th place – 12 points6th place – 9 points7th place – 7 points8th place – 5 points9th place – 3 points10th place -1 pointHosts - Ian Clarke, Colin Jackson-Brown & Tracey BGuest starring Helen Jackson-Brown.Playlist compiling/distributing – Helen Jackson-BrownRecorded/Edited/Mixed/Original Music by Colin Jackson-Brown for We Dig PodcastsThanks to Peter Latimer for help with the scoring system.Part of the We Dig Podcasts network along with Free With This Months Issue & Pick A Disc.Bluesky - https://bsky.app/profile/wedigmusic.bsky.socialInstagram - https://www.instagram.com/wedigmusicpcast/Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/wedigpusicpcast/Find our other episodes & podcasts at www.wedigpodcasts.com

Brian Hyland is known as the voice of Summer Love, & is a pioneer of Rock N Roll. He sang one of my favorite songs, in fact it's probably one of almost everyone's favorite songs & one of the great classics of all time as it is on every karaoke song sheet…Sealed With a Kiss, which has probably been sung billions of times in karaoke. His journey through music is nothing short of legendary. At the ripe young age of just 16, he skyrocketed to stardom with his infectious hit, “Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Yellow Polka Dot Bikini,” claiming the coveted #1 spot across the nation & earning him a prestigious Gold Record. But..this was just the beginning of a remarkable musical odyssey. Alongside the dynamic duo of Gary Geld & Peter Udell, he had hits like “Let Me Belong to You,” “Ginny Come Lately,” the world wide phenom “Sealed with a Kiss,” & “Warmed-over Kisses” solidifying his status as a household name. He collaborated with luminaries such as Snuff Garrett, Leon Russell, & JJ Cale, delivering hits like “The Joker Went Wild” & “Run, Run, Look and See,” which soared into the top 20 on the charts. We discuss: -Where Brian grew up (right near me!) -How & when did this music bug germinate in you. -His meteoric rise which continued with the monumental success of Curtis Mayfield's “Gypsy Woman,” a timeless anthem that resonated globally, selling over 3 million copies & produced by the legendary Del Shannon who was known for his megahit Runaway. -How his penchant for reinvention shone brightly with his rendition of Jackie Wilson's “Lonely Teardrops,” capturing the essence of soulful melodies with unmatched finesse. -How In 1977 he moved to New Orleans to work with Allen Toussaint. Allen produced an album with Brian called “In a State of Bayou.” The album was loved by the critics and was one of the best pieces music he ever did. -After 60 years since the release of ‘Sealed with a Kiss', Brian reunited with Peter Udell. Peter penned a Christmas song & invited Brian to record it. The song, titled ‘A Little Bit of Christmas Time', was released at the end of Nov. 2023. -How Brian continues to grace stages & studios with his timeless melodies, with a legacy as a true icon of the music industry which seems to only grow stronger with each passing beat. -“Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Yellow Polka Dot Bikini…now those are some memorable lyrics. What year was that recorded & how did that song & those iconic lyrics come about. -How long did it take for your next hit song and what song was that? -Sealed With a Kiss. How did that song come about and was it about someone specific? -What keeps Brian still performing 65 years after his first big hit? See www.BrianHyland.com for upcoming performance and to listen to some of his classics

Guests: Greg Loiacano – vocals, guitar Michael Urbano – drums Vicki Randle – percussionIn this episode of Only in the Green Room, we sit down with Greg Loiacono & Stingray, a Bay Area super-group built on deep respect, serious groove, and a whole lot of joy. What started as a solo recording session for Greg Loiacano quickly turned into something much bigger when drummer Michael Urbano stepped in—and the chemistry was instant. Add longtime collaborator and powerhouse percussionist Vicki Randle, and Stingray was born. The trio talks about the unspoken language that defines their music: listening more than talking, playing for the song, and letting structure and feel guide everything. Influenced by classic soul, R&B, funk, and rock—from Curtis Mayfield and Marvin Gaye to Sly Stone and beyond—Stingray's sound feels timeless but alive in the moment. We dig into:How the band formed organically (and accidentally)Why joy and laughter are non-negotiable onstageThe rare magic of musicians who truly listen to one anotherPlaying parts instead of overplayingBalancing Stingray with busy touring and recording schedulesRecording at the legendary 2200 Studios and feeling the weight of Bay Area music historyWhat's next: new singles, more shows, and getting back into the studioWith lineup support from Tom Ayer's, Kofi Brown, and Danny Eisenberg, Stingray is prioritizing what matters most—great songs, great vibes, and genuine connection. If you've ever wondered what it looks like when seasoned musicians stop chasing “projects” and start chasing feeling, this conversation says it all.New singles out now:Come Back HomeI Hope We Get to DanceRecorded backstage, moments after finishing their November 2025 set at Sweetwater Music Hall in Mill Valley, California —because the best conversations always happen only in the green room.Greg Loiacono. Founder of Stingray, is best known as a gritty rock and soul man of legendy San Francisco rock band, The Mother Hips and his collaborations with Chris RobinsonVicki Randle has recorded and/or toured with Aretha Franklin, Mavis Staples, George Benson, Lionel Richie, Kenny Loggins, Celine Dion, Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Branford Marsalis, Jeffrey Osborne, Laura Nyro and Lyle Mays. She appeared in the HBO documentary Mavis!. She became the first female permanent member of the Tonight Show Band with Branford Marsalis, starting in May 1992 and continuing through May 2009.Michael Urbano toured extensively with John Hiatt (1995–1999), as one of Hiatt's "Nashville Queens" that included bassist Davey Faragher (Elvis Costello) and guitarist David Immergluck (Counting Crows). He also spent time as a drummer Smash Mouth. Before Smash Mouth, Urbano had played drums with The Spent Poets, The Kinetics, Deathray, Third Eye Blind, John Hiatt, Black Lab, Cracker, Paul Westerberg, Red House Painters, Willy DeVille, Camper Van Beethoven, and Sheryl Crow.[2]https://gregloiacono.com/

Junior Murvin was born Murvin Smith on July 22, 1946, in Port Antonio, Jamaica, and raised in Kingston, where he began singing in the 1960s as part of local harmony groups. His early recordings leaned toward rocksteady and soul-influenced reggae, but it wasn't until the mid-1970s that his voice, a high, falsetto style sometimes compared to Curtis Mayfield, became fully recognized. Murvin's sound stood out in an era dominated by heavy roots vocals, giving his music an emotional, haunting quality that would later define his most important work. Guitarist, bassist, composer Phil Upchurch died on November 23, and with his passing the music world lost one of its true "musician's musicians." Upchurch played on more than a thousand recordings — from Michael Jackson, Donny Hathaway, Chaka Khan, Curtis Mayfield, and George Benson to Jimmy Reed, the Staples Singers, and countless jazz, blues, and soul sessions. He belonged to the generation that didn't just shape popular music; they invented it. For my dad, Ben Sidran, Phil was also a friend for over 50 years. They recorded and toured together, shared studios, homes, families, and a deep creative kinship. Some of my earliest gigs as a drummer were with Phil, and those moments helped define my own musical path. When we heard that Phil had passed, I called my dad so we could remember him together — the sessions, the stories, the laughter, the generosity, and the unmistakable sound that made him both an insider's secret and a foundational figure in American music. This episode is a tribute — a conversation about a life lived fully in music, about reputation and legacy, and about the musicians who shaped the landscape from behind the scenes. Music industry veteran Eddie Gilreath pulls up to the Corner Booth at Skip Paige's Little Bar to trace an extraordinary journey from Philadelphia's sound to global stages. With hosts Patrick Evans and Randy Florence, he recalls faking his first bass gig at 14, serving in Panama during tense Cold War days, then rising through Motown and Warner Bros. to help break artists like the Spinners and George Benson. Eddie shares inside stories about working with icons including Frank Sinatra, Ray Charles, Smokey Robinson, Michael Jackson, Bonnie Raitt, Curtis Mayfield, and more—plus why some of the most memorable moments happened offstage. He talks about smashing industry barriers as a pioneering Black executive, his “Black Music Is Green” initiative, and how streaming has rewritten the rules for new artists. It's a masterclass in music, marketing, and humanity from a man who quietly shaped the soundtrack of our lives. From basement rehearsals to boardrooms, Eddie's story is funny, candid, and deeply inspiring.Takeaways:How a missing bass player at a Philly cabaret accidentally launched Eddie's music career at 14.Serving in Panama during a volatile Cold War era and keeping music alive even in a combat zone.Moving from musician to executive, rising through Motown and Warner Bros. during the heyday of soul and pop.The strategy behind breaking acts like the Spinners and George Benson, including the massive success of Breezin'.Becoming the first African American national sales director and vice president at Warner, and refusing to be pigeonholed into “just” Black music.Intimate, often funny stories about working with legends: Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr., Smokey Robinson, Curtis Mayfield, Ray Charles, Michael Jackson, Cher, George Clinton, and more.Creating the “Black Music Is Green” initiative and using hard data and retail relationships to open doors for more Black professionals in the business.Reflections on Broadway cast albums, the streaming-era music economy, and why Eddie hopes his legacy is simply that he “did the right things.”#BigConversationsLittleBarPodcast #PatrickEvans #RandyFlorence #SkipsLittleBar #MutualBroadcastingSystem #CoachellaValleyResidents #SkipPaige #McCallumTheatre #EddieGilreath #MotownRecords #WarnerBrothersRecords #MusicIndustryLegends #GeorgeBenson #RayCharles #CurtisMayfield #MichaelJackson #RecordBusinessHistory #BlackMusicIsGreen #PhiladelphiaSound #PanamaVeteran

In 1970, former Impressions member Curtis Mayfield released his solo debut. And 55 years onward it's still one of the best sounding albums ever recorded from one of the best artists sadly taken away from us in the most tragic unforeseen circumstance. Are the theater kids in awe of the Gentle Genius? Trick question, who isn't?Originally recorded February 22, 2025.
Grace & Truth: People Get Ready! Pastor Kent LandhuisTHEME - Pay attention to the signs of readiness. TEXT - Luke 12:13-56Four questions to diagnose readiness:1. Is your focus now or not now?Luke 12:13-21. Parable of the rich fool.Signs: greed or gratitude.2. Is your strategy wise or not wise?Luke 12:35-41. Parable of the unwise steward.Signs: unfaithful or faithful. 3. Is your posture ready or not ready? Luke 12:42-48. Parable of the thief in the night.Signs: not alert or alert?4. Is your heart trusting or not trusting?Luke 12:54-56.Signs: Afraid or unafraid.NEXT STEPS1. Get ready.2. Stay ready.GO DEEPER: People Get Ready by Curtis MayfieldPeople get ready, there's a train a-comin'You don't need no baggage, you just get on boardAll you need is faith to hear the diesels hummin'Don't need no ticket, you just thank the LordThere is a lot that we don't know about the return of Jesus (like the time) but there are some things we do know without a doubt. Three things we know for sure:1. Jesus will return again. (It could be soon.)2. The return of Jesus will be sudden and unexpected. (There will be no time to prepare after he returns.)3. We are called to get ready and stay ready for the return of Jesus.Preparing for Jesus' return requires living a life of active faith, vigilance, and holiness in one's daily duties. This means cultivating spiritual alertness, pursuing holiness, and faithfully living out our calling while wearing the full armor of God. Preparation also involves embracing suffering with hope; focusing on love for God and others; growing in faith through prayer, scripture, community, service, etc.; and reaching out with the love of Jesus to others. Getting ready for the return of Jesus is part of our walk as disciples of Jesus. Until Jesus returns we are called to trust God in all things. Are you ready?“He who calls you is faithful. He will surely DO IT” ~ 1 Thessalonians 5:24

This mix is a celebration of the edit – where funk, soul, disco, and hip hop get reimagined for today's dancefloor. We open with Greg Wilson & Ché's remix of The Sugarhill Gang's “Rapper's Delight” – a fresh, floor-shaking twist on a timeless classic. From there, it's pure groove: The Reflex lifts Instant Funk to new heights, DJ Fudge adds fire to Sadam Ant, and Dave Lee delivers pure gold with Glenn Jones, Mtume, Harvey Mason, and Gwen McCrae. Ken@Work flips Curtis Mayfield and Tom Browne into modern floor-fillers, keeping the energy alive and kicking. The originals – Tom Browne, Gwen McCrae, Instant Funk, The Sugarhill Gang – built the foundation. The editors – Greg Wilson & Ché, The Reflex, Dave Lee, DJ Fudge, Ken@Work – keep it alive, fresh, and powerful in 2025. This is about groove, respect, and reinvention. Turn it up and celebrate the culture.

Hop in the Top Ten Time Machine as Dave and Milt, joined by certified grooveologists Al and Ira, crank the dials back to 1972 — a year when rock was raw, soul was deep, and at least one guy was wearing glitter and singing about space. It's time for the ABCs of Rock Draft, where our fab four draft their dream teams of albums released in this musically stacked year. Expect legends like Bowie, Wonder, and the Eagles to fly off the board early — but don't be surprised when someone grabs the Sanford and Son theme or gets misty over a reggae soundtrack. There's glam, grit, gospel, and a live J. Geils record that might punch you in the face. Along the way: hot takes, deep tracks, accidental revelations, and one AI-generated roast session. By the end, you'll either be nostalgic for bell bottoms or in awe of how many stone-cold classics dropped in '72. Either way, you're gonna want to stick around for the final picks, the albums that got left behind, and ChatGPT's judgment from on high. In this episode of the XS Noize Podcast, Mark Millar is joined by Cam Muncey — guitarist, co-founder, and key songwriter of Australian rock legends Jet — to discuss his bold and unexpected debut solo album, Cam Muncey & the Delusions of Grandeur. Recorded in just 30 days with producer Jan Skubiszewski, Jet bassist Mark Wilson, and drummer Peter Marin, Delusions of Grandeur is an expansive, deeply personal record. Moving through dreamy shoegaze, melodic guitar-pop, 80s indie, swaying soul, and atmospheric art-rock, it draws on influences from The Smiths, Talk Talk, Curtis Mayfield, R.E.M., Mazzy Star, The War On Drugs, and Roxy Music. Guided by Muncey's warm vocals, the album invites listeners on a rich, genre-spanning journey. Highlights include “Already Gone,” “Don't Fade On Me,” “No Rock'n'Roll Star,” “I've Been Low,” “Breathing Again,” and the breezy pop of “Friendly.” In this candid conversation, Muncey shares what inspired him to step out on his own, the freedom he found creating without limits, and the lessons learned from touring with icons like Bruce Springsteen. In this week's mixtape rewind, we revisit our motivation mix from the start of 2023, still able to get you going for your 2025 goals. The motivation mix takes listeners through different facets of achievement, starting with Jamiroquai's "Canned Heat" and its message about releasing your inner fire. We explore self-confidence through DJ Khaled and Drake, persistence through complications with Curtis Mayfield, and Britney Spears' blunt reminder that success requires actual work. When progress feels slow, Matchbox 20 encourages us to look back and acknowledge how far we've already come. Our conversation weaves personal stories throughout – from Sam's marathon training mindset shift to his year-long weight loss journey, offering real-world examples of how these motivational principles apply in daily life. We discuss how proving doubters wrong can fuel ambition (thanks, Jay-Z), the power of staying connected to others during challenging pursuits (Pharrell Williams' "Freedom"), and why sometimes the most motivating thing is simply showing up for yourself day after day (Macklemore's "Fire Breather").The mix closes with Pearl Jam's "Present Tense," reminding us that while goals focus on the future, achievement happens in the present moment. By staying grounded in today's actions rather than yesterday's regrets, we create the future we envision. You can find the playlist on Spotify here:https://open.spotify.com/playlist/77nOZ2Ret4MBtPdiJtaHPP?si=hmBIhVx9R0qHkWL6Vb2k_gYou can also find the motivation mix on Apple Music here:https://music.apple.com/us/playlist/season-3-motivational-mix/pl.u-9N9LX74F1GR9BYeCanned Heat by JamiroquaiTo the Max by DJ Khaled, DrakeMove on Up by Curtis MayfieldWork Bitch by Britney SpearsHow Far We've Come by Matchbox TwentyMy Shot by Lin-Manuel MirandaSo Ambitious by JAY-Z, Pharrel WilliamsFreedom by Pharrel WilliamsMoving On Up by M PeopleTake Back the Power by RauryFirebreather by MacklemorePresent Tense by Pearl Jam Support the showVisit us at https://www.superawesomemix.com to learn more about our app, our merchandise, our cards, and more!

The “I”s have it! And Lightnin' Licks Radio has the “I”s. Ten of them to be exact. Jay and Deon discuss their favorite vinyl records filed under the letter I. It's intimate and intense. It's immersive and inspiring though, ironically, they're idiots.--In the early 1970s, legendary collaborator and self-proclaimed non-musician Brian Eno famously designed a deck of 115 cards containing elliptical imperatives to spark in the user creative connections unobtainable through regular modes of work. He called his creation "Oblique Strategies." For the past half century, countless artists and professionals across the globe have benefited from utilizing the oblique strategies technique when attempting to overcome a lull in creative output. In 2024, idiotic, introverted award-winning* hobby podcasters and self-proclaimed Lightnin' Lickers Jay and Deon found themselves uninspired when contemplating the potential themes of their upcoming thirty-fifth episode. Together, they decided... to default back to the alphabet. Because they have a reasonably solid grasp of the alphabet and how it works. Welcome to The Not Old Better Show, the podcast for those who believe life gets better—and even sweeter—with age. I'm your host, Paul Vogelzang, and today we're diving into the soul-stirring legacy of two musical giants whose voices, harmonies, and vision shaped the very sound of a generation: Curtis Mayfield and Jerry Butler. If you grew up spinning 45s on your record player or gathered around the radio to hear those smooth, soaring harmonies, then you already know that Mayfield and Butler weren't just voices—they were storytellers, activists, and pioneers of a sound that broke barriers. Together, they helped shape the golden age of soul music, and their influence continues to inspire generations. But did you know that before the world knew them as soul legends, they were just two young men from Chicago's Cabrini-Green projects, united by gospel music, ambition, and a dream of something bigger? Today, we'll uncover the fascinating story of how Jerry Butler and Curtis Mayfield met, formed the Impressions, and created hits like the unforgettable “For Your Precious Love.” We'll also explore why Jerry's path ultimately led him to go solo—and how Curtis turned his heartbreak into a revolutionary career that brought soul music into the Civil Rights Movement. Joining us today is returning guest Scott Shea, a writer and expert in music history, whose latest article brings these incredible stories to life. From Curtis Mayfield's genius as a songwriter to Jerry Butler's powerful, underrated baritone, we'll reflect on their journey, their struggles, and their lasting impact on American music and culture. This one's for the music lovers, the memory keepers, and anyone who remembers the days when a song could soothe your soul and spark a revolution. So grab a cup of coffee or tea, sit back, and let's celebrate the legacy of two legends who reminded us all to “Keep on Pushing.” I'm Paul Vogelzang, and this is The Not Old Better Show. Let's get started.
Athol Fugard's plays, like Blood Knot and Master Harold and the Boys, were about the emotional and psychological consequences of Apartheid. He also formed an integrated theater company in the 1960s, in defiance of South African norms. The playwright, who died Saturday, spoke with Terry Gross in 1986. And we remember soul singer/songwriter Jerry Butler, who sang with Curtis Mayfield and The Impressions before going solo. Jazz historian Kevin Whitehead marks the centennial of the birth of Roy Haynes, one of the most in-demand drummers of the genre.Learn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy
