The opening bass line from "Cannonball" is an instant time warp back to 1993. I remember watching MTV and seeing Kim Deal from the Pixies on my screen and realizing she had a twin sister in this band I had never heard of called The Breeders. Decades later and Last Splash holds up as one of the standout albums of the 90s, with its unique tempo shifts, care free aesthetic and of course the sound of the harmonizing Deal sisters.

Happy 30th birthday to 'The Last Splash' released on August 30th 1993! To celebrate we have dedicated our 30th episode (did you see what we did there?!) to the album which was the second release from the Dayton, Ohio, quartet, led by principal singer songwriter, and former member of The Pixies, Kim Deal. We take a look at the formation and evolution of the group from their beginnings in 1989 to the present day, including other LP releases, line-up changes, gigs, and an appraisal of 'The Last Splash', their most successful album to date. We talk about our favourite songs, and single releases from the record, and its critical reception and sales. Lead single 'Cannonball' was the catalyst for the success of the record, but what is the song about (it's fair to say it's open to some debate), and who is the Marquis De Sade, and what's his connection to the track? As ever, there's a review of the UK single and album charts from the week of release, and if the previous episode contained arguably the best chart we've covered from August 1983, then this could well be the worst! There's songs from Billy Joel, Mariah Carey, UB40 and a glut of drum-machine based releases from 2 Unlimited, Apache Indian, SWV, Urban Cookie Collective, Bitty McLean, Culture Beat, and even Freddie Mercury. The album chart was a little more palatable and we also whiz through the UK box office, news, and TV for August '93, before concluding the episode with our Top 3's. It's a good one this week as we look at our favourite acts containing siblings. There's lots to go at, but did we select any of your favourites? Let us know! Kate's Single of the week: 'Creep' by Radiohead, released 22nd September 1992 https://youtu.be/XFkzRNyygfk?si=1axqNkRaOMecogf_ Rick's single of the week: 'Venus as a boy', by Bjork, released 23rd August 1993 (happy belated 30th!!) https://youtu.be/7Z5aPaDwAkU?si=SQ2TZAzb5m8nlnJ_ We would really appreciate it if you could support our indie podcast and help us to grow our audience by subscribing to the podcast on your listening platform of choice, sharing links with your friends and family, and by taking a minute to leave us rating us on Spotify, and/or Apple Podcasts, even if it's to give us a star rating without any text. Yo!This was one for the ages.Having being fortunate enough to be invited up to Sk8bar in St. Joe, I gladly accepted and -- while there -- was able to connect with Danny "Dr. 47" Phillips to record Episode # 75 of Badass Records podcast.Such a challenge. So much fun. So worth it.Seriously.I didn't know how I would attempt to make myself comfortable in someone else's space. I didn't know if I'd know how to set up all of the gear once I'd taken it apart for the first time, and I didn't know how I'd do (at all) attempting to conduct an interview beneath all of those details. But, alas...the stress and the anxiety were completely unwarranted.Brandon and Jesse welcomed me into their home away from home, and Danny was a gracious host/guest.He was every bit of (unsolicited) awesome as advertised, and was quick to quell the worries of my brain that a booker/promoter for a live-music venue would feel too busy to be participating in an interview for a podcast. And, the chat was -- in my mind -- perfect. We talked a little bit about the ol' life thing. The work thing. The...just...you know...doin' it thing. And of course we talked about a few of Danny's favorite records. He gave me a substantial list, and -- for shits and giggles -- I broke it in half. Here's what that looked like:List A:Sticky Fingers (1971), The Rolling StonesFleetwood Mac's Rumours (1977)Outlandos d'Amour (1978), The PoliceThe Lemonheads's It's a Shame About Ray (1992)Siamese Dream (1993), Smashing PumpkinsNirvana's In Utero (1993)A.M. (1995), WilcoList B:At Folsom Prison (1968), Johnny CashBig Star's #1 Record (1972)My Aim Is True (1977), Elvis CostelloThe Ramones's Rocket to Russia (1977)Last Splash (1993), The BreedersBad Religion's Stranger Than Fiction (1994)In the Aeroplane Over the Sea (1998), Neutral Milk HotelIf you want to get a hold of Danny for band-booking purposes, here are what I believe to be the best ways:1) Contact Sk8bar -- either via the landline (after 5:00 p.m. Central) at 816-689-0507 or via Facebook.2) Holler at Danny either via his Instagram or his Facebook page.3) You can also find him on Twitter, if you please, but, I digress...My chat with Dr. 47 was fantastic. Please consider giving it a view or a listen. Please check out Sk8bar, and please check out the Merch' store on the podcast's Web site. Even a sticker purchase helps.Anyhoo...as Jamal a.k.a. Jamel says, "Be kind, be good to each other, and help keep great music alive."At least that's what I think he says. Thanks for stopping by.copyright disclaimer: I do not own the rights to the promo or the intro/outro audio. Thousands showed up to get one last splash and some even took home some souvenirs to sell on eBay! We also found out about the ghost named Billy who hangs out among the boats. Mickey and Minnie's Runaway Railway opened recently at Disneyland and we talked about some of the differences compared to the original ride at Walt Disney World. After our Disney talk, Ryan tells us about an immersive experience he had with his family at the Department of Wonder in Sugarland, TX.

Well, f∩ck me twice on Sunday! Party Favorz (i.e. me, myself, I) has been in a pissy mood all week trying to get this CDN and caching plugin configured to my liking and it's turned into an obsession of defeat. I don't know what that means but it seems to fit the situation. Since Last Splash was already in the bag and I had planned on taking a much-needed break afterwards — I decided to go ahead and drop this Labor Day weekend party set 7 days early. You'll notice a lot of Block & Crown remixes in this set as I've only recently gotten access to an entire catalog of their work through one of my DJ services. Many of these songs never see the light of day on Beatport or Traxsource but are DJ exclusives (likely because of licensing issues). There's not a lot known about this duo other than they appear to be filling the gap left behind by Almighty and 7th Heaven who have been staples in the gay dance arena for several decades. While their brand isn't strictly geared towards gay audiences as you'll notice their work ends up on our Dance Club, Disco House and Peak Hour series — they're remarkably agile and easily adapt to whatever they're working on. In the last couple of years, they started remixing other artist's tracks and have recently embarked on creating original songs for the ZYX Music label (another blast from the past that's still pumping out great dance music). Another notable duo that's more recently entered this arena are Nacho Chapado & Ivan Gomez whose Guareber Recordings produced earworms with big tribal circuit beats and have now expanded into power disco house tracks and mashups much like Block & Crown are doing with great success. It's not clear if their Disco Gurls and Ghostmasters monikers are indeed themselves or ghost DJs working under the Guareber Recordings label but they've definitely hit on something as there's lots of room and plenty of source material to sample and mashup from the 70's, 80's, 90's and the early millennium. Then of course there's the Party Favorz favorite Purple Disco Machine, whose remixes and remakes of historical dance classics and current pop and Indie songs brings everything into his own little disco universe has exploded on the dance scene making him one of the most sought after DJs right now. Throw all this together with brand new dance gems and cheesy remakes of 80's love songs and you got yourself the most EPIC T-Dance set I've put out to date. As mentioned earlier, I plan on taking a couple of weeks off from the podcast to recharge my batteries and hopefully get this g*ddamned caching plugin properly configured as well as the app for Party Favorz, which was all working great until it wasn't. Brian has us riffing on Soundgarden. If they were “superunknown” at the time, it wouldn't last past the release of this fourth studio album. Soundgarden would break into super stardom with this heavy hitting, 5-time platinum effort. The strength and distinctiveness of Chris Cornell's vocals are obvious. Sometimes called Stoner Rock, Soundgarden would be a key element in solidifying the "grunge" sound of Seattle. They won two Grammy awards for "Black Hole Sun" and "Spoonman." The album cover is a distorted image of the band members and is known as "the screaming elf." Black Hole Sun This is one of the big hits from the album. There were 15 tracks on this album, clocking in at over 70 minutes, exploiting the longer format of CD's relative to vinyl. The Day I Tried to Live This track released as a single was a deeper cut not often heard outside of rock stations. The strategy employed by Soundgarden was to have each musician to create his own work, then collaborate after the song was written. Fell on Black Days Another hit single from the album, Cornell said that this song was about realizing "you're unhappy in the extreme." ENTERTAINMENT TRACK: Theme from "The Naked Gun 33 1/3" This music track was used for both the "Naked Gun" movies and the "Police Squad" TV series. STAFF PICKS: “Mr. Jones” by Counting Crows Rob's staff pick is the first radio hit from "August and Everything After," released in December 1993. They also did the song "Accidentally in Love" for one of the "Shreck" movies. "We all want to be big, big stars, but we've got different reasons for that." “Return to Innocence” by Enigma Bruce's staff pick highlights the use of sampling popular at the time. The drum beat is from Led Zeppelin's "When the Levee Breaks." Unfortunately the Taiwanese chant sampled was copyrighted, resulting in a series of lawsuits. “Cannonball” by Breeders This alternative rock hit from the Dayton-based Breeders is off their second album entitled "Last Splash." "I know you're a libertine. I know you're a cannonball." “Mary Jane's Last Dance” by Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers Brian closes out Stafff Picks with this song, originally going to be called "Indiana Girl," but Petty revised it to it's current form. There's not too many videos emphasizing necrophilia, but this is one of them. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK: “Train in the Rain” by Bruce Cockburn We finish off this week with a laid back fingerstyle guitar track.

The shadow of Kim Deal and Tanya Donelly looms large over 1990s alternative and indie rock. They were both members of seminal 1980s bands, Deal in the Pixies, and Donelly in Throwing Muses, and had second acts in the 90s in their own bands, The Breeders and Belly. For one album, before Kim's sister Kelley joined the band, Donelly joined forces with Deal on the 1990 album Pod by The Breeders, then conceived as a side project for the two. The result is a subtle and restrained record that only hints at the pop prowess the two would unleash with future singles like "Last Splash" and "Feed The Tree." With engineer Steve Albini behind the board, the album pushes the artists to work with space, finding equal footing for all the instruments. For some, the deliberate nature may turn plodding, but the atmosphere created is one truly unique, and it's clear why musicians like Kurt Cobain would find the tension between hard hitting drums, melodic bass lines and stripped down guitar lines so appealing.   Songs In This Episode:   Intro - Happiness Is A Warm Gun 14:44 - Glorious 17:02 - Oh! 23:15 - Fortunately Gone Outro - Hellbound   To support the podcast, join us at Patreon for bonus content and more. The album manages to do what Kim Deal’s ex-bandmates in Pixies have struggled with since returning to the recording studio: that is, sound like the band that fans first fell in love with without ignoring that decades of trials, experiences, and musical ideas have come and gone since then. A review by Matt Melis, read by Michael Roffman.Learn more about your ad choices. Well, it looks as if I'm way ahead of the curve. I managed to clean up my computer, replace the motherboard, backup everything to two external hard drives (for anal retentive sake) and reinstalled Vista now that SP1 is out. I also switched to DSL from Cable (good riddance). So where did I find the time to knock this edition out you ask? I threw all the songs together in a giant mix and burned it to an mp3 disc so I could preview the tunes I wanted to use for this mix while I was working on the computer. Not only was the mix spectacular, I was able to go back and make a handful of tweaks and of course edits to cut the time under 80 minutes per mix for those that like to burn to disc. All told, I might have spent 3 hours in total in the mix. I can assure you, it's rare that all the songs I want to use just fall into place, but it does happen. Even though First Splash isn't until the end of the Month, I wanted to ensure there was no overlapping with my Pride Edition that comes out in June. So spacing these mixes out, just made good sense. For those of you who may be wondering what First Splash is, it is Memorial Day weekend in Austin, TX. Much like your White Party and its brethren, this is a major Gay celebration that goes on all weekend. Typically considered the time of year when you're ready to shed all your clothes for more suitable attire befitting the season. You can certainly do that at "Hippie Hollow" a nudist area just off the lake. If you've never been, you ought to check it out. There's a newer First Splash that started on South Padre Island back in 2000. I was asked to spin two years in a row for the event and the accompanying "Last Splash" which occurs on Labor Day weekend. Though small at the time, it's well on it's way to being a viable competitor to the one in Austin. "The Upper Deck" owner has been buying up all the property down the street where his hotel is located at and had plans to build a giant indoor club to allow the party to go on all night. I haven't been back in a while, I guess maybe I should. I really like this mix. Side one is chock full of cheez. Mind you, not that government cheez, but grade 'A' quality cheez. Nevertheless, still cheez...LOL. As the mix progresses, it begins to get deeper about 2/3 of the way down. Side two picks up where mix 1 leaves off and holds steady until the end, where I had to throw in one last slice of cheez, an updated version of the eighties NRG classic "So Many Many, So Little Time". All in all, this is one solid mix that I'm very proud of and I hope will get the boys all excited about Summer! Yay, the warmer weather is on its way and it's time to get all sweaty on the dancefloor again. I still have a few more things that need to be taken care of, so I may or may not be back this next weekend with my next update. I decided to go ahead and knock out my next Electro-Funk Edition followed by the next installment of the Classix Edition that was originally promised. I'll see how everything pans out, but those of you that regularly visit my blog, know me well enough that I just can't stay away. Until then, everyone have a great weekend and as always...ENJOY! As I wrap up this last set from 2000, I can't help but think about all the people and places I've left behind to pursue a better life for myself. Unfortunately, things don't always work out the way I envision, they seldom do. As I previously stated, you have to remember the worst to get to the happy memories in your life. Certainly completing this mix has brought back many of those memories and if anything, it has been cathartic. People often ask "why do I even bother?" Other than the fact that I have this unquenchable thirst for house music, I frankly don't know. It certainly isn't for the fame and fortune; and it definitely isn't for the love I get back from you guys, because, with the exception of a handful of you, that just doesn't ever happen. The truth is when I was pulling in 50 - 60 hours a week at work with another hour and a half on the road back and forth, I was still getting up at the crack of dawn to squeeze in some mixing. Then I'd burn a CD every day just to have something to listen to on the way to work. It's what fueled me and still does. As these days get shorter, colder and darker (thanks to our idiotic daylight savings policy that fuck's with my sleep patterns) I can't help but think where Rick and I will be next year. I just got back from one of my 'head-clearing road trips' I take from time to time. That's where I hop in my car and just drive to wherever it takes me. Sometimes I get lost, but I always find my way back home. Actually, I've been doing that since I was sixteen when I would get up in the middle of the night, take the car and just drive. It's comforting in a weird sort of way, that I can't explain; hitting the highway and leaving the lights of the city behind offers some sort of peace that I often can't find among the busy streets lights and the whirling sounds of sirens, typical of living in a big city. Though I would never trade that in for small-town America again, it's nice to just escape from the world every once in a while. With gas prices dropping significantly, it makes it even easier to justify (though that never stopped me). However, don't say anything to the oil companies, or they may raise prices again...LOL. I do want to mention that one of our readers was recently hospitalized but is now out. His partner posted on his Facebook page that he's doing better, but will need some time to recover. For those of you that believe in the power of prayer, please keep him in your thoughts. And finally, about this mix. While you still have your big room, hard-hitting power spins in this final mix, you also get a decent sampling of other styles that were moving the floor. From the electro-funk rock of Groove Armada's classic "I See You Baby" to the Latin flavors of Afro Medusa's "Pasilda" (watch out for the amazing ATFC remix that just came out or even hunt down the equally hot Seamus Haji mix from a couple of years back), my tastes didn't move in any single direction. 2000 was the year that brought us one of my all-time favorite uplifting positively speaking hotties, Georgie Porgie. His "Life Goes On" was a top-five club hit and laid the groundwork for a series of number one club hits that have continued to this day. It was also the year that Olivia Newton-John was having sort of a comeback. Finally, she was able to gather her early country/pop hits and compile them with the rest of her catalog for a complete offering of her repertoire ever. Being a gay icon, you know someone had to go back and serve up some remixes. I remember dropping Victor Calderone's remix of "Hopelessly Devoted To You" during Last Splash; with its pounding signature beats, it drops about 3 minutes into the song leaving the whole floor looking dumbfounded. Then the unmistakable vocals come in and everyone just goes bananas. That was pure magic. While I was originally going to close this set with the massive "One More Time" by Daft Punk, I decided that Olivia would be more fitting.

It's almost 2:00 am and I couldn't get any sleep, so I decided to go ahead and put up the next installment of the Classix of 2000.  The mix was already complete a couple of days ago, so all I had to do was split the tracks and create this post.  I don't think I'll begin the third volume until Monday or so.  If you remember, I got some goodies in for my computer earlier this month.  The easiest things like the additional memory and the new hard drive have long since been installed, but I was saving the more time consuming difficult part (at least for me) installing the new massive heatsink for a quieter day.  Tomorrow has been designated as that day.  If I don't come back in a few days, you'll know something went horribly wrong...LOL.  I'm not anticipating any problems, but then again, I am quite possibly the unluckiest person living on this earth...swear to god! This mix is comprised of some massive, and I mean MASSIVE club tunes from the year.  Certainly "Dive In The Pool" by Barry Harris feat. Pepper Mashay was one of the largest tunes of the Millennium.  What's funny is that I was all over this song when it first came out and decided to drop it for the first time at "Last Splash".  The first night I played it, it just about cleared the dancefloor.  The second night, reactions were more favorable.  Generally, that's not good enough to go forward with a song, but I really believed in it.  So, I dropped it the third night and all of a sudden everyone just GOT IT!  Already climbing the charts, the song was bolstered by the American version of "Queer as Folk" where it was featured on the closing credits for like the first five episodes.  After the first time, it was in high demand all the time.  Strangely, the song never hit number one on the club charts but peaked at number two and stayed there for two weeks.  Ultimately, Madonna's HOT "Music" leaped right over it and took the top spot for five weeks.  Nevertheless, because this was an original production, Barry must have made a pile of money off of this one song alone.  It was shortly after that, that he and Chris (Cox) went their separate ways only to have Barry just drop off the face of the earth.  Seriously, if anyone knows what he's up to these days, I'd really like to know.  Sure he did a couple of things after that, but he never had the success of this offering and hasn't been able to touch Chris's success yet. Another massive offering was from Sonique.  "It Feels So Good" was just one of those hook-laden songs you just couldn't escape.  Honestly, the breakbeat version was the one everyone clamored for, but I was always partial to the "serious mix" as well, featured here.  Then, of course, we have the bubblegum dance-pop of Eiffel 65's "Blue", the 'I'm in need of a guy song'.  Hey, why else would he be so blue?  That song coupled with "Mambo No. 5" was enough to make me want to hang myself, but you gotta give the people what they want even if it gives you acid reflux. In 2000, we also saw the return of Ann Nesby.  Most of you may not be familiar with her, but she is famous for her early seventies soul hit which she wrote: "I Can't Stand the Rain".  That song alone has been covered by just about everyone and their mother; more notably by Eruption's amazing disco version in 1978 and Tina Turner in 1984.  It was also sampled by Missy Elliot and was her first big hit in the mid-nineties.  Though Ann was most notable for her top twenty hit, she was also the lead singer of the gospel group Sounds of Blackness who also scored several huge club hits in the nineties.  Here, Ann flies solo with a remake of an underground disco classic originally performed by Brainstorm.  I only know this song, because it was prominently featured at the beginning of the movie 54 (of which I am a HUGE fan).  Let's put it this way, she rips this mother apart! I can't catch no man Hangin' out at a discotheque But I believe in the boogie Oh, but the boogie don't believe in me
