There's a view that Government funding for major events is a smart investment. The first round of events in its $70 million package has been unveiled, including the first ever concert at Christchurch's One NZ Stadium at Te Kaha next May. Other events include Linkin Park in Auckland and the Ultra Music Festival in Wellington. Auckland Unlimited Chief Executive Nick Hill told Mike Hosking this funding is designed to make existing events bigger. For example, he says, the Readers and Writers Festival in Auckland is a fantastic event, but could they use the funding to make it more international? We start by asking how he is feeling about the release."Yeah, pretty good, man," he enthused. "It feels really good to actually finally have it out. It's definitely been a process and there's been… In hindsight, I probably wish I would have given myself a few more months, but that's always the way. I think you get down to deadline day and there's always bits and pieces that have to be done last minute (laughs)."We ask Dellacoma to dive deeper into the musical side of Searching For You In The Darkness."In writing this album, it was the first time I think that I really approached it from the perspective of, I guess, writing just songs rather than thinking about songs that I necessarily wanted to play live," he measured. "Not saying that I won't play these songs live. I will play as many as I can, but the thought had occurred to me, you know, as I was early in the writing phase, that with this being my third album there's now more material between all three albums plus a few surplus singles than I'm ever going to be able to play in one show.And that kind of unlocked something in my head. It felt like it took off some blinders almost, which was really cool. So we've got a couple of different tracks on here. We've got more of an acoustic-y style ballad in there. We've got probably one of the heavier tracks we've ever done as well."In the full interview, Dellacoma spoke more about the new album, including the different approach to songwriting and how it translated in the music. "Forever Shining" In 1976 brothers Tony and Chip Kinman founded the legendary Carlsbad punk band The Dills, who in just four short years crammed their music CV with highlights. Before they disbanded in 1980, The Dils had recorded classics like "Class War" and Mr. Big" opened for the Clash and appeared in Cheech and Chong's Up In Smoke. The Kinmans went on to form Rank and File, who are considered by many to be one of the first cowpunk bands around. Rank and FIle's rootsy stomp and melodic muscle powered them through three perfect albums--Sundown, Long Gone Dead and their self-titled 19897 swansong. The Kinmans had an uncanny ability to read the cultural room before anyone else--they were hardcore before it hit the suburbs and they were cowpunk before it was cool and with their next band Blackbird, they were techno metal before Korn and Linkin Park shirts at Hot Topic. The Kinmans went on to play in bands like Cowboy Nation and Ford Madox Ford and sadly, Tony Kinman died in 2018. Which brings us to KInman's self-titled Kinman's new album. A stirring song cycle filled with acoustic numbers, Tex-Mex techno, the undulating rhythms and "Me And Tony" a streetwise tribute to a life in music with his brother, Kinman's new record sounds like nobody else. It's filled with unexpected sonic flourishes, heartfelt emotional ruminations, great storytelling and devastating beauty. AJ's returns from the Pacific Northwest to kick off the show's 8th season. The President of the 31,000 thought that you could find fans like the ones on Saturday at a "youth soccer game" and claimed that he hadn't heard any of the barbs thrown at Rory McIlroy during the week. He wrapped up his chat with BBC by saying that "golf is the engine of good," which sets Andy and Brendan off to the races. They look back at the week as a whole and wonder what the PGA of America's true focus was on and whether the organization truly cared about putting on a quality golf tournament. The two discuss where the Ryder Cup should go from here and whether it needs to be sold or licensed to another company for future installments in the United States.
